    Unless my memory is playing tricks on me but your decent from Kinder Scout was my accent to Kinder Downfall on my Original 1977 Pennine Way Hike, twelve days to hike to Kirk Yetholme. Happy Memories that sadly are way beyond me now that I am retired. Tony in Essex.

    I've done that walk quite a few times over the years but it always takes me back to 1976 when I was a 16 year old Scout and along with 3 other Scouts we walked the pennine way over two weeks to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland, back then the start route was up Grindsbrook and over Knderscout.
    As always Patrick a pleasure to watch, we're happy for your house move glad you're happy with how things have worked out.

    That was absolutely fan bleeding tastic too Patrick.
    I've done this very walk many times,but it was fascinating to hear all the information about it as you went on your way.
    Every walk you film contains some nugget of advice or information,I learn something from every one of them,I have the same pay by phone app and what a great piece of advice about no signal and paying first from home.
    I'v done the walk in both directions,and coming up Grindsbrook Clough gives you a few flippin eck moments too.
    Glad you filmed inside the Nags Head too,hope you enjoyed your pint.
    A wonderful film,with great scenes,company and commentary,and lovely music too.
    Thankyou so much,I may have been quiet on the comments lately as I was repeating myself with every vlog,but I have watched,liked and thoroughly enjoyed every single one from 1 to 178.

    Did you know Patrick that a meter of peat takes a thousand years to accumulate? You were passing through over 2 meters of it there - all that history! I would love to walk Kinder Scout one day. I know you explored only a portion here - there are depths to it you simply cannot touch on in an afternoon. But this was another fantastic walk. So many insights and views. The clough looked a decent old scramble. The mountain is full of deep cuts like that. And I agree it might be the best part of the walk - a classic walk indeed. Well, good going. All the best as always. Mark

    • @solitaryrambler
      @solitaryrambler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Morning Mark, it's fascinating when you look deeply into the history of our peat, incredible isn't it. You'd love Kinder Scout, it's wonderful to see with all those peat groughs but moreso with the views it provides. I'll be exploring more of it another when I can. Grindsbrook Clough was a good scramble, and there are many other cloughs up to the plateau that are more challenging. Thanks for joining me Mark on this classic walk. Have a great weekend 👍

    A classic walk indeed Patrick and you did it the hardest way also. That descent down Grindsbrook is certainly tough on the old knees! Every time I see that start of the Pennine Way sign, I get a bit emotional as it reminds me of my experience last year. Really enjoyed seeing this fab route through your eyes and you certainly earned your beer at the Old Nags Head. Thanks for the cheeky mention at the top of Crowden Tower. I’d definitely recommend that climb up if you get chance. 😊

I wanted to do it in this direction as I wanted to show a section of the start of the Pennine Way. I'd forgotten how great it is on Kinder as it's a long time since I was up there last. Will definitely be doing some more at some point when I can. Certainly watching your vids up the various cloughs has been a great inspiration too. When heading for Grandbach Hill the other day, a guy pulled up in his car beside us and said " Where are you off to?" We answered with Gradbach hill and the Roaches and he then said, " Do you know it's so refreshing to see that you, unlike most, have all the gear you might need." He added how many ppl he sees wearing shorts t shirts, flip flops, and no water or backpack. We saw this even on Snowdon 😬

    The last time I walked that route was around 10 years ago with my grandson who was 12 years old at the time. I must have tired him out as he slept in the car all the way back to Matlock
    More than half the people I know locally prefer to tackle the route the other way round. I suppose, as you descend, you get to enjoy new views. As you are aware, I am an enthusiastic motor biker and ride most roads/lanes through the Peak District. The same road can offer a different view when travelled in the opposite direction. When you add the four seasons, you have an infinite amount of views to enjoy

Really looking forward to it & watching this has inspired me even more so many thanks 👍🏻

    Hi Patrick. Definitely one of the Peak District classics👍 And you timed it perfectly for the heather in bloom! I've ascended via Grindsbrook Clough, but never come down that way. I reckon it's a much better finale to a great hike than coming down via Jacob's Ladder! All the best and take care 👍😊

      Evening Des, thanks for watching👍Yeah it was a great day of filming this and with all that purple heather. I even wore a purple shirt to match! 😊 Most people seem to have done this walk in the opposite direction, but like you've said I do like the finale of scrambling down Grindsbrook Clough! All the best 👍

    Some lovely shots of the surrounding countryside of Edale Patrick. I really enjoyed joining you on this route, and the angles of your shots. I have never done Jacob's Ladder, but know the feeling of thinking you're at the top, but more to come!! Also never been confident a about scrambles! Your melodic music I found appealing. Very nice to hear.

      Many thanks Shanita, I particularly enjoyed making this one, so am pleased with the shots too. As it's been some years since last doing this walk, I had forgotten how far the climb was up onto Kinder, so kept thinking I was nearly at the top! 😂 Pleased the music was appealing to you, I'm happy with this score very much. Thanks as always for your great comments and for watching👍

    i think you're right about these novice walkers. You see them on the rescue programmes where they were ill equipped and got into difficulties. Mainly because they didn't have a clue. I think the rescue teams should leave them up there lol. I love kinder. Edale is a great place and jacobs ladder is reknown. Your vids really make my day. Beautifully shot and edited, it's a treat to watch. Thank you so much Patrick

    Great filming Patrick. It's the best one I've seen going up Jacobs ladder. I've always said I love to hear all of your stories ... amazing story of the mountain bike riders. Could have heard more today. Take care Patrick. Enjoy the weekend my friend.
    I once got lost on Kinder Scout the evening before starting the Pennine way proper with my school friend. We ended up wandering aimlessly in circles for four hours trying to find the way back. We hadn't taken a map but everywhere looked the same with those peat hills.

    • @solitaryrambler

      Many thanks again for the great comments David. I find the plateau fairly uninteresting; as you say everywhere looks the same with those peat groughs and there's no point of reference. That's why I love the walk around the edges where you see more interesting stuff including the views. Thanks for watching and have a great weekend too 👍

    That's really funny, I did that exact same walk but in reverse on the same day as part of a group walk with Abbie Barnes! We must have passed each other at some point!
    I remembered about the lack of signal in Edale and pulled over just past Hathersage to pay and luckily there was a signal

      It was a plan of action from the National Trust started in the early 1980's. They started with Men and women employed through a government scheme to get the unemployed into work. I was part of a 10 man team that started at the packhorse bridge, all the stone we used came mainly from the bed of the river Noe carried by hand and the larger stones dragged on makeshift sledges with fencing stakes as rollers dragged up the hillside by a Turfer hand-winch . I'll pop a couple of photos on Patrick's Facebook page.

    Long time since I did that walk (in the reverse direction to yours). I was quite surprised to see the peat groughs still there. In my neck of the woods in the South Pennines - Black Hill, Saddleworth Moor, etc - they have all but disappeared due to regeneration measures such as blocking the groughs to silt them up, along with re-seeding. How nice to see them again. Have you ever done the circuit of the plateau? That's an interesting walk.

    • @solitaryrambler
      @solitaryrambler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michael, those peat groughs are a real fixture of Kinder. It's a lovely route walking around the edges, but I've never done the whole circuit as yet. Many thanks as always for taking the time to watch and for commenting 👍
