I think you'd love "All the Living and the Dead" by Haley Campbell. Incredibly moving and very in depth look at the industries surrounding death.

Good heavens I’m going to have to add several of these to my TBR! Most excited about the Anthony Bourdain one. I’m kicking off spooky season with some classics - Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Dr Jeckll and Mr Hyde, Dracula, and Frankenstein. 😁 Oh yeah… also throwing in some Poe for good measure!

I recommend the book The Monuments Men by Robert M. Edsel. It is about the recovery of stolen art by the Nazis during World War II. I absolutely enjoyed it and would recommend it for those who are interested in either art, or WWII, or both.

I tried reading the Oliver Sacks book a while back but didn’t get on with the writing and dnf’d it pretty quickly. I hope you have better luck with it!
The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu sounds so fun!
I read Gut by Enders back in 2015-16 and really enjoyed it, though I don’t remember much of the specifics re: writing etc. I hope you like it.
That find of In the Weeds is amazing!!

Maids- if you’re working for someone else the pay sucks 😢 but if you’re working for yourself it was $30/ hour x 2 ppl if you have a partner. Would take us 1 hour to clean a house split the tasks do we finished at the same time. Other days for deep cleaning can take longer. That was back in 2006-2010

As you are a fan of John Singer Sargent, I'm wondering if you have been to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston? I think they have the largest collection of his works and the MFA guides are very well informed about him.
As for spooky season books, I have been reading The Ruin of All Witches by Malcolm Gaskill, which is about a witch mania that happened in Springfield Massachusetts decades before the more famous witch trials in Salem. I also listened to Yours Cruelly, Elvira, Cassandra Peterson's memoir.

Great recommendations. You may have already read the book I'm going to recommend, but just in case you haven't, see if you can get your hands on Flow. The Psychology of the Optimal Experience by Mihaly something. Sorry. He has a long last name full of consonants. I've read it twice, and I rarely do that. And speaking of death, try Ernest Becker's The Denial of Death. I read it when I was 18 (I'm almost 70) and it blew me away. Love your channel.

I've read only two on this list, both books were an absolute charm, albeit for different reasons. Hamnet is gut-wrenching and I adored this book. I came across it while taking part in the Folgers Shakespeare Library's book club a few years ago.
Gut, is written by a medical student while she is getting a degree in gastro-enterology, while she is very much enthralled by her subject. It is a fabulous read into, well, our bowels. I hope you enjoy!

Giulia Enders' book about guts was a huge bestseller here in Germany. She started as a science slammer, I think. And her sister did the illustrations for the book.
I always enjoy the diversity of topics in nonfiction books. I'm interested in the horse girl book and will look that up 🙂

Have added Hamnet, Maid and The Oregon Trail to my TBR - and I am still only at the 5 minute mark on this video!! Bad Ass Librarians I purchased last year and I LOVED it!! Most of the rest dont interest me that much. Actually that In the Weeds book, for some reason made me think of Anderson Cooper so I just purchased 3 of his books - all as E-books. I think I thought of his Memoir as a war journalist. Despatches from the Edge, Vanderbilt The Rise and Fall of a Dynasty and The Rainbow comes and goes. All by Anderson Cooper. I have been wanting these forever!! Thanks for the haul, Olive.

I’ll be so interested to hear your thoughts on Lord of the Flies. I’ve been attempting to do the same with books I read years ago in school. I didn’t like LOTF in high school either and I’ll hold off my adult thoughts until you do your reread😊. The bad ass librarians is going to be a must for me! And I’m adding The Revolutionary and Dark Horses too. As well as Ann Fadiman’s book and The Grand Affair. Have a great week💙

I read Severed a few years ago and quite enjoyed it. If anyone's up for it, I'd pair it with Mr. Humble and Dr. Butcher: A Monkey's Head, the Pope's Neuroscientist, and the Quest to Transplant the Soul by Dr. Brandy Schillace, about one doctor's attempt to transplant heads. Not for the squeamish (obviously) but still fascinating.

I finished reading Oregon trail just a couple of months ago. I thought it was a lot of fun like you were on a road trip with them. I felt bad for his brother at times. I looked up TH-cam videos for places that they mentioned as well kind help feel like I was there with them lol I also played the old school Oregon trail game online which is free. I tried to play it how the actual pioneers were on the trail and I died
