Welcome to another writing routine! This series is honestly one of my favourite parts of my channel atm. It's such a joy trying out the writing routines of authors like Haruki Murakami, Octavia E. Butler and Donna Tartt. Today, we're trying out Stephen King's writing routine while I work on my adult fantasy novel, Project Tea Cup! I hope you all enjoy it 💛

I really like those writing routine videos because they really show that there isn't a "right" way of doing it, so you can try a lot of different things until you find the one that suits you the best. This was a great video, thank you for the good work.

when my grandmother was in hs, he went to speak to her class about writing and pulled her aside afterwards. he ended up saying that he'd read one of her pieces for that class and told her that it wasn't his cup of tea, but to get herself published. she never did, unfortunately, because of things in her life. but that will be my secondhand flex lmao

You know what... Stephen King has a "second job" as well! He has to promote the books a lot: interviews, panels, autograph sessions, films and I guess, so on and so on. And that's why I find this routine really suitable for working people. It looks manageble... think I'll try it.

    • @izzo2998
      @izzo2998 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hmm. I think Stephen is at such a publishing brand level that I doubt he has to do all of that. His books sell themselves. Sure, he does interviews and panels, but I think he does them because he likes talking to people. And does he do autograph sessions? I would imagine that would be impractical, as it would cause a mob scene.

I haven't even started my first book and I have "jack of all trades" syndrome where I basically want to learn and do everything that ever existed and I'm pretty well established in my knitting/sewing skills (which take 80% of my time) so I find it reassuring that a professional writer as successful and prolific as Stephen King basically works halftime, that's a routine that I could feasibly add in my life long enough to get something out of me without being block at the wall of "I'm not of the people who writes books"

I agree that going for a walk or reading or lying in bed and thinking for long stretches of time are a luxury, but I wouldn't qualify them as leisure activities for a writer. I always find that when I can fully engage in such activities it helps with my writing, especially with the problem-solving aspect to it, to the point that I now consider them part of the process.

When I read "On writing", I was deeply struck by King's routine! But what really liked me was the part where he says that he likes to walk in the woods, because it helps him think about narrative and writing and such. And then I realized: I had been doing the same for years! Spacing out while listening to music, or in silence, while I walk is actually the ONLY way I get ideas and full sentences in my head. I had been walking since I was a teenager and it was only when he pointed it out that I said: Oh my God! (Of course, I am nowhere near his skills). I love how you keep experimenting. Truly, finding your channel this year has been one of my highlights in media watching. I hope you get a good winter

Something I have also learned from Mr.King is to not limit yourself to one genre and to explore stories outside of your comfort zone, its like in music with effect pedals, “you may not use every effect you mess around with, but it’s a tool to keep in your tool box.Sometimes the right tool is the one you didn’t know you needed.

Really the difference is efficiency. Odds are 3 hours of writing by King results in a WAY higher percentage of "good stuff" than 3 hours for me, or really most average or even above average writers. The more telling part is the 6 pages per day. He goes on in that same interview to say 6 "finished" pages meaning far fewer rewrites than for most of us I would imagine. I know that for me to get 6 solid finished pages I need to write maybe 3-4 times that many. That takes me longer than 3 hours generally speaking. But still, great video and a good exercise to try new things and see what can help us and what might be a revelation for us.

That discussion with King and George RR Martin is what actually inspired me to start writing. I was one of those people who thought that one day I would write - one day I will have the time - one day all these ideas I have will make it to the page... maybe when I am retired. This is, of course, a horrible way to view things as "one day" never comes and you just lose time and accomplish nothing. Then I saw that and thought to myself, well, I may not have the time to write six pages a day, but I can write four, or three. Heck even one page a day is a 365-page book, right? It was the kick in the pants I needed. I'm now putting the finishing touches on my trilogy and have another five chapters done for my next project! So glad I saw that video and though I am not a big fan of his fiction, King has been a major inspiration to keep writing and not doubt what I'm doing (people always told me you have to plot and graph and plan and I'm more instinctual and character driven like King is - which teachers always told me was wrong. It seems to have worked for him, so I'll keep doing what I'm doing thank you!)

I started writing my own television series, and I kept trying to find a starting point or beginning. After I found his routine, the show's first season was finished strongly in about 2 1/2 months. It really taught me the answer to the question, "What do you do when the sun isn't shining?"
You work, and you can't be inspired all the time, but if you focus and set in routines. You will come up with ideas, but not all will be winners, but the work is there.

As I'm making my way through this video I'm picking up on things. If you want to be like Stephen King, keep this principle in mind: forward momentum. Ever notice how the endings of Stephen King's books usually just trail off? That's because as he's finishing one book, he's already conceptualizing the next one in his mind. That's how he pays the bills. Let the editor clean it up. They have a specialized skill set for that task, just like you have a specialized skill set for creativity.

Can always go the Robert E Howard method.
Step 1: Believe that Conan is behind you, ready to cleave you in twain if you do not write.
Step 2: Proceed to write through the night until exhausted and the sun rises.
Step 3: Know that Conan will return come the night, and fortify yourself for the session ahead.
Step 4: Avoid step 4. It involves shooting oneself.

I also try not to be on social media in the morning! I listen to podcast or an audiobook. That gives me the mailing I’m looking for, but doesn’t take away my attention or hurt my eyes, right when I wake up. :)

I love King, I read a lot of his books, but IT is the one I’m not sure I will ever read. It’s because 1. When I was about 6-7 my parents were watching the It movie and I hid and watched for a moment until one particular scene scared me really badly i wasn’t able to rewatch it in my adult times
    2. I’m 39 and I don’t really like clowns 😂😂😂😂😂

I I'd like to see the writing routines of Ernest Hemingway, David McCullough, Amy Tan, Barbara Tuchman and Winston Churchill. Now there's a night owl writing routine! Keep up the good work! You're doing a great service.

You are so enjoyable to watch!!! My goals for 2024. I want to FINALLY start writing at least one of my stories. And I want to be reading 100 books next year (2 books a week). I am currently a customer service rep (remote) at Williams Sonoma. I enjoy it, and can definitely see myself pursuing a training position there. Anyway, life goals. I am only 37. Can always live better!

Also, I love that it looks like you have quit caffeine. That is so amazing for productivity. Few people really appreciate how much going for coffees, etc., destroys productivity. Oh, and I'm also married, with a 4 year old son. So the above goals are just for me. :)
