Love all of the answers to the interview questions here. They respect and support each other so much! I like Mikhail’s happiness, smiles and he referred to the answers of previous skaters as well. As for Shoma, the point where he addressed what he likes about Nathan and Mikhail was really sweet and mature. I like how he included Mikhail as well even though the question was just about Nathan. For Nathan, I like how he brought up Shoma’s injury because many of the medias still don’t know he was injured 1-2 days before his SP. All of these skaters are so sweet and supportive among each other. They competed on ice and friend off ice. Amazing characters in all of them.
Nathan and Shoma taking the interview so seriously and giving great answers! Then there's Mikhael on the side, throwing jokes and having a good time XD
the skating's great, but what's equally inspiring when you see skaters express their genuine admiration of each other and recognize that every skater contribute unique elements to the sport. it's a lovely antidote to seeing people online trashing skaters for beating their favs or simply not being their personal cup of tea. it's not just about athletic ability, but character. they're good kids.
I am so proud of Nathan! I knew he would come to World's ready to redeem himself after a disappointing Olympic performance, but he still skated better than I could have hoped. Perhaps more impressive is the way he so gracefully answers these questions, showing humility and growth from past mistakes. It is so lovely to hear the skaters talk about what they admire in each other! It really shows how much respect they have for one another and the advancement of the sport. As for Shoma, I think he did his best considering his injury and I am glad he could earn 3 spots for Japan. With Yuzu out, the expectations were put on him so it was nice to see him make the podium. Now the boy can get some well-deserved sleep! Mikhail has a very nice presence here as well. I noticed at the GPF press conference too that he can understand English quite well and I like that he refers to the other two skaters' answers when he responds.
Congratulations to Nathan on winning the gold! I'm so proud of him as well as Shoma, and Mikhail! All three of these boys battled injuries and/or demons this Olympic season bujt each came through and medalled at Worlds! Congrats to Shoma and Mikhail on winning medals for their respective countries too!
Good for you Nathan you r super awesome skater I’m your big big fan and you’re very smart answering those question during press conference after winning men’s world figure skating .Im looking forward for the next season to come.
Congratulations to Nathan Chen. I am glad he is continuing Yzuru's and Javier's habit of showing appreciation for his fellow athletes. Good sportsmanship says it all about a person.
I had to record the skate so I saw it much later. Congratulations on your First World Championship Nathan; you so earned that Gold! Proud of all the athletes! They are bringing so much to the sport of figure skating, the jumps are exciting to watch and the artistry I think is going to be focused on more. But shame on NBC for their lousy coverage.I got to see no men's medal ceremony!! And so little of the rest of the competitions!
A change the ISU should consider is increasing the factor for the PCS both in the SP and FS. Nowadays, an outstanding SP is 60+ points and an outstanding FS is 120+ points; the maximum score for PCS is 50 and 100 respectively. Thus, the 50:50 ratio between TS and PCS is no longer given. For the SP a factor of 1.2 instead of 1.0 and for the FS a factor of 2.4 instead of 2.0 would improve the balance between TS and PCS. Personally, I would find good to reduce the number of jumps in the FS from 8 to 7 for men and from 7 to 6 for women. For me, there are just too many jumps! This would give more time for more actual skating (transitions, skating moves, etc.) that would contribute to the PCS.
I hope the rules change so that more triple combos can be added instead of quads. It's very difficult to see such great skaters struggle w multiple injuries due to the quads. We shouldn't forget the artistic side of figure skating and definitely all 3 guys here have that in spades but I would prefer to see more difficult transitions and step sequences leading into triple combos than quads.
angeliqueinhollywood Yuzuru is the only one with difficult transition into his quads.. As much as i admire Nathan, i wish there is more transitions in between his jumps because this is the first time i feel bored watching the elements in between his jumps. There are so few steps and duration for choreo seem to last a few seconds only, to me, compared to the amount of time he position himself for the quads.
Yes, the answer is to PUNISH the more technically adept skaters and limit the number of jumps they can do so we can limit the number of points they can get. Nonsense. What this sport does NOT need is to be made more subjective than it already is. All this talk about limiting the number of jumps is coming from behind the scenes from those who are still fuming that the more technically gifted Zagitova won gold over the more artistic Medvedeva. It's wrong. Alina won fairly based on the existing rules. They shouldn't be changed to give the artistic skaters who are less adept technically a more unfair advantage than they already have. The only way for athletic skaters to combat subjective judging bias in PCS and the artistic mark is to add more elements on the technical side. WHY hold gifted skaters back because others can't catch up? Ridiculous. The absurd proposed changes are directly aimed at Zagitova and Chen by those who resent their victories. What DOES need to happen is to STOP giving points for rotation. Why should a skater get any points for a missed jump? When the guys know they're going to get ZERO points for any jump that doesn't have a proper take off edge, number of rotations and landing position (no two-foot, hand down or swing-around), then they'll be more judicious about the number of jumps they put into their program from the start. They'll only do the jumps they're absolutely confident of landing and thus, there will be fewer falls and risk of injury. As it is now, someone like Kolyada, who only lands his quad lutz 1 out of 10 times, continues to fling himself into the air and fall because he knows he'll still get partial points for rotation. That's got to stop. No one gets partial points because the ball almost went into the net. If a jump isn't text book, it should get ZERO points. Naturally, if there were real consequences like this for missed jumps, skaters would police themselves properly. The answer, however, is NOT to penalize all skaters and over-regulate the sport by punishing those who actually CAN land the jumps. They're just dumbing this sport down by the day.
RJ: I've said for years they need to stop giving points just for rotation, and they need to totally eliminate +GOEs. When they first instituted +GOEs, I knew skating was in trouble In no other judged sport is there any mechanism to ADD to an athlete's score. Only mandatory deductions allow for points to be SUBTRACTED due to errors. What's left of the total base value after all deductions is the score. Why should one skater get 1-3 extra points just because he jumped higher or she looked "prettier" in the position, if the same element was performed perfectly by another? The score should be the same. +GOEs really bring the subjectivity of the artistic mark over into the technical side, and that gives judges even more power to falsely boost the scores of their preferred skaters. +GOEs have to go.
why ISU is blocking perfromance of any skater on youtube that;s kinsa dump Figure Skating is the most populor why block them this not good to do how can anyway watch their favoirte anytime they want if you are blocking vidoes please unblock i'm really upset as well sad about it
Koliyada is so natural and so open. He made a joke about nathans 6 quads and nathan didnt even react. Both nathan and shuma are so robotic. But all 3 of them are such great skaters
Nathan didn't react because the translator didn't mention his name in the English version. How can he react based on hearing his name in English but everything else in Russian??
I mean, you could see it during the exhibition gala - he was standing alone, nobody approached him or talked to him, and he's to shy to just go up to someone, so it looked a bit like he was having a hard time trying to fit in, before relaxing and just focusing on himself. Usually Yuzuru would come up to him and help him socialize somehow.
I think Yuzu fans make too much out of the little brother story line. Yes they’re close and Yuzu is always joking and interacting with Shoma but Shoma is a grown, independent man. He has his own unique personality that is not like Yuzu’s and that’s totally fine, it doesn’t mean he’s sad, or missing out, or can’t socialize without Yuzu. Shoma probably just is more reserved in general and can be playful if others are playful with him but not one to initiate like Yuzu is constantly doing. I think Shoma gets kind or robbed by the cute little brother sweet little thing that needs taking care of story that’s put on him. Yes he’s super cute and smaller and shy but he’s also a talented, strong, powerful skater. I don’t think he’s lonely or in need of Yuzu at every moment, let him be his own person.

there have been rumours of rule change for a while already, way before Alina won over Evgenia and before Nathan managed to land 6 quads in FS, so no, the rules won't be changed against them (maybe some rules will be against Eteri's girls in general, if the backloading bonus will be removed). The most technical adept skaters will still have the edge on TES, only there will be one jumping pass less. It's not a tragedy. The main reason to cut 1 jumping pass for men is that they want to cut the duration of competitions for broadcasting reasons (-30s for Men and Paris FS). They HAD to cut one jumping pass as a consequence, and it will be very hard for men (and even more for pairs) to do any actual skating between elements because usually the preparation for a jump takes way less than 30 s, so they are going to have less room to breath and actually less time to do a little of interpretation of their music. It's likely choreo sequence and choreo between jumps are going to suffer the most (not that some skaters were doing much between jumps to begin with). There is also the hope to re-balance TES with PCS. PCS include things like skating skills and transitions which are the real core of FIGURE skating and should NOT be subjective and are VERY technical, so it is only fair if they can weight more than they do right now, tho I would have liked the change in factorization instead (the PCS factoring is artificial anyway, exactly to have equal weight for PCS and TES). I think 0 points for not textbook jump is quite harsh. And wrong edge or hand down aren't as serious mistakes as a fall, why punish them the same way? And shouldn't a wrong edge with serious UR resulting in a fall be punished more than a mere fall on otherwise good element? And then I guess jumps with UR and PR, or use of full blade for toe pick jumps, should get a 0 too? Because they are certainly not textbook. Vincent's jumps are not textbook most of the time, even when he stays on his feet, so I guess he should get 0 out of all his quads, even if he is indeed rotating some average triples and should get credit for at least those rotations... Thing is, figure skating isn't like soccer, so imo it shouldn't be measured in a way that is black or white. landed or not landed. If the rumours about the change in goe range is true, it's supposed to push skaters to do jumps they can land with QUALITY, penalizing mistakes more. It's true that there will be more room for subjective judging. But it's honestly puzzling to think that any of that could work against people like Nathan. It's not like judges have been harsh with him (nor tech panels, for what matters). Actually, current rules even require NEGATIVE goe on jumps with long preparation (*cough*Nathan*cough* among others, of course) and for example mandatory -3 goe on SP solo jumps not preceded by steps (*cough*Nathan*cough*) but I've hardly seen those rules applied, TO SOME SKATERS. So, IMO the first and most urgent problem of current scoring system is actually that it is NOT applied. You can change the system all you want but, unless judges stop giving quad-bonus on PCS and +2GOE for jumps with no flow out and long preparation, or not meeting the mandatory requirements, and tech panels will make selective calls according to which fed skaters belong to, nothing is really going to change.
Elle: I don't doubt that the powers that be are saying they want to shorten the duration of individual programs to decrease the length of broadcast time, but I feel that's just a smokescreen. I still feel there is resentment against the more technically gifted skaters, and a shorter program means fewer technical elements can be included. Thus, just by nature of the time limitations, the scoring capacity of technical skaters is being reduced. If they want to emphasize skating skills even more than they are now, I'd be much more in favor or bringing back school figures as the third phase of competition, rather than giving judges more leeway in boosting their preferred skaters' PCS with greater weight. Let the lines on the ice determine skating skills, not some judge's personal opinion. Making school figures mandatory again would improve everyone's skating skills, while keeping things more objective, or at least somewhat more objective. Giving zero points for jumps is also a way to ensure skaters workout their technical problems, instead of someone like Ashley Wagner who went nearly her entire career with rotation problems but never fixed them because she knew she could still get most of the points for her jumps, and make up for the loss of those technical points with PCS. It just encourages lazy skating. I don't see how giving skaters higher +GOEs on jumps is going to encourage them to improve technique. Only real negative consequences will do that, in my opinion, such as a zero for a missed jump. Increasing +GOEs not only will help judges pad their preferred skaters' scores even more, but is likely to encourage skaters to try to jump higher or beyond their means in order to achieve those extra points and contribute to injury, in the same way people have accused quads of causing injury. It's not just about +GOEs on quads. It's about +GOEs altogether. I've seen skaters who popped jumps or had a fallout, get +GOEs on those elements, and I'm not even kidding. +GOEs should be eliminated across the board. Nothing like it exists in any other sport, and it shouldn't in figure skating. No matter what other changes are made, eliminating +GOEs is the best thing they could do for the integrity of the sport, but that's NEVER going to happen because the powers within figure skating actually don't want a truly objective sport, and that's a shame. That's why, for 40+ years, people have said, "That's figure skating", as the only way to explain the indescribable systemic corruption and resistance to positive change within this sport.
TERRA КОРЕЯ Boring as in I prefer to see clean programs from the skaters. Only Nathan delivered a relatively clean program. Not much competition when everyone fell.. not exciting to watch. Most of them looked fatigued. Think it would be a better competition if the WC is in late April
moi3chats I can relate you regarding clean programs but I don’t miss them at all, because as skaters they got boring in the way that those two get too hungry for medals and their skates got boring without risks and courage for new things. Especially Yuzuru who used the same programs for 3 years just for medal in olympics used “cheap” elements in short program believing his high components. Hope he stop habit of using the same programs for years because he can produce beautiful things. Regarding Xavi I am just happy that he retired this year because he is not bringing anything new these years not in quads or in beauty of programs or grace in movements. Anyway future in the hands of new generation. So happy for Nathan. He really deserved it. Sad ending of season for Shoma because he couldn’t show all of his capability due to injury, hope for fast recovery. And Michail has grace in his movements hope he will do his best in next season too.
Jan K its all about winning though. If you compete you aim to win. If they are hungry for medals then thats a good thing because its a competition anyway.
congrats Nate but your skating needs to work on component score. You leave me cold, nothing but jumps, no matter how many isn't enough. Your top score still lower than Yuzuru's at the Worlds. You have the package now get a better coach. Also, the costumes from Vera Wang have to go, looked cheap and like Lulu Lemon.
Nathan’s component score was 91.84... if that’s not high I don’t know what is. Fairs, his components aren’t as high as his technical score but it’s pretty damn hard to match his tech. Yes he does a lot of jumps but in interviews he said he really like jumps, so of course he’s going to work on them and include them, if it’s his favourite elements! And please stop comparing Nathan to Yuzuru, they are very different skaters and what’s the point in bringing Yuzuru up just to degrade Nathan? Just allow Nathan to celebrate his win, cause he deserved it. What he skates in shouldn’t even matter if he skates well. Nathan have never really like the jewels and glitter and he should be able to skate in whatever he feels comfortable in without people insulting it.
First off Mandy that is a silly comment. Nathan competed against Yuzuru and they are scored directly against each other. So the comparisons are current and realistic. And as far as costumes go there are so many who didn’t like his mime look it does matter and it is frankly a part of a program. It didn’t match either program. And yes he needs to work on component score. He does 6 quads and was still lower than Hanyu’s worlds score this is very telling And when he falls like at previous worlds or Olympics his programs come tumbling down. He can do better.
I think the new rule change says they have 7 jumping passes, but only repeat 1 quad... so potentially Nathan can do 6 again cause he has 5 different quads + one rep in combination. And then there is still quad axel to land...

Did anyone notice Nathan’s answer to that last question? That is a TRUE competitor. He understands that mistake could only make him a better skater.
Ugh agree, but you definitely knew someone was going to ask it...
I was touched by Shoma who likes Nathan and Mikhail.
yeah I know the same
Congratulations to Nathan Chen. I am glad he is continuing Yzuru's and Javier's habit of showing appreciation for his fellow athletes. Good sportsmanship says it all about a person.

The answer, however, is NOT to penalize all skaters and over-regulate the sport by punishing those who actually CAN land the jumps. They're just dumbing this sport down by the day.
there have been rumours of rule change for a while already, way before Alina won over Evgenia and before Nathan managed to land 6 quads in FS, so no, the rules won't be changed against them (maybe some rules will be against Eteri's girls in general, if the backloading bonus will be removed).
@Icowles: Good points! ISU should listen to your suggestions.
Shoma hates press conferences.
*SHOMA UNO*
Really miss the presence of Yusuru and Javier at this World Championship. This was a boring event in both the men's and women's.
Boring?) Almost everybody from the last warm up fell 2-5 times. It was weird...
TERRA КОРЕЯ Boring as in I prefer to see clean programs from the skaters. Only Nathan delivered a relatively clean program. Not much competition when everyone fell.. not exciting to watch. Most of them looked fatigued. Think it would be a better competition if the WC is in late April
Ice dance was great!
moi3chats I can relate you regarding clean programs but I don’t miss them at all, because as skaters they got boring in the way that those two get too hungry for medals and their skates got boring without risks and courage for new things.
Kreatures100 Oh yes...his costumes...i mean...he isn't going to a funeral.
What a nasty comment.
As long as he skates well his costume doesn’t really matter
He can do better.

so with the rule change, you are telling me i just witnessed the last ever 6 quad program?!
@ Purple Smile: Good for Nathan. That means his 6 quad record will not be broken.
so much for the evolution
I think the new rule change says they have 7 jumping passes, but only repeat 1 quad... so potentially Nathan can do 6 again cause he has 5 different quads + one rep in combination. And then there is still quad axel to land...
