Hell let loose review will be delayed until after E3 as I will be doing full coverage of the "festival of lies" this weekend with live streams of the big presentations as well as summing up videos, it's going to be a very long weekend here in Worthabuytowers :)
My favourite random trait a character got was "overly familiar - calls everyone by their first name"; it turned all the enemy names into actual English names so instead of "tourist" being displayed over each tourist enemy, it was "Belinda", "Barbara", "Susan", etc
Personally I find it's a kind of useless weapon. It's a cluster grenade and it takes fucking forever to detonate, about a full 5 seconds and it can't be cooked. Every single other explosive feels like it has more utility TBH as the cluster nades are actually smaller then the regular nades and very unpredictable in their spread.
@@CamoflaugeDinosaue no I prefer a good art style. I still think Metal Slug X is the most beautiful game art ever made. This is why 16bit sprites, and thing like Nintendo 3D Cell shading hold up so well. We were saying "this looks so real!" When the Voodoo 3 was the best consumer card on the market. Everything that goes for realistic ages poorly though we might be past that. I do read comics especially Dark Horse comics like Hellboy/BPRD, and this game has a similar style. Thick black lines & one solid color for each part
Security bots and turrets are easy to take on with zapper and later with bouncer(just have to time it, as they fire in bursts of 3). Rifter is also one fucked up gun, lol. My personal favorites are germspiker and later glow spiker. First poisons living things(and can kill most mobs if given a bit of time, especially upgraded) and second does similar, but it uses radiation, so everything is affected(including inanimate objects), particularly good at those ducking Patients, since radiation spreads to nearby mobs. And it also can be used to create "barriers" as radiation cloud, if shot not at mobs, stays where it hits(good way to block spawn portals for a while, as cloud dissipates after it infects several mobs). As far as route goes, i always go for the helm first(seeing all fixed loot on the map is really useful). Combined with perks like Eagle Eye(can see loose items on the layout map) or Gourmand(food is shown on the map), makes life easier. Killing Screws is pointless. They are friggin tanks, that take quite a lot of resources to kill, yet rarely drop anything. And even if they drop, its mostly trash. However...once player gets to Scrambler, they become your best friends - hypnotize a couple and then just send them in to clear rooms. Deeper layers are friggin brutal. I can easily farm layer 3, with 4 being a bit of a challenge, but layer 5 is clusterfrack, every wreck requires extensive planning what to take with me. Because being overrun by a huge herd of mobs and lose stuff that i was hoarding for last 10-20 wrecks is not fun. This game is really good in short burst, few wrecks at the time. Otherwise it will get stale real fast, as there is not really that much variation to this game. Also, its not really FTL, as there is no time limit(aside of oxygen supply when inside wrecks) and nobody is chasing you. Player can fly around nebula indefinitely, as long as there is enough fuel(and unless stated otherwise in wreck description, all wrecks have at least one fuel on board).
It's great fun for maybe a few days. But it doesn't have that replay value that is common to the indie "classics" like Darkest Dungeon and FTL. So I'm hoping the dev wants to add to it. Like not just a little more content, but expand the mechanics. Allow some in depth immersion, put in more things to do by way of hacking, salvaging, stealth. A larger selection of survival options, such as degrading equipment, mods to spec your gear, more injury statuses and their interactions with medical equipment. They can do a huge amount and I'd love to see it happen. Mac, the Sec bot dies to a Zapper and a few Stapler shots :D
Hope they make a sequel and greatly expand on that specific aspect of replay value AND expanding on the art style in some way. All the guns were so unconventionally unique in what they were made of and how they function in the world is hilarious like the stapler shotgun
I saw this on Steam earlier this week and it piqued my interest. I also just so happen to be playing through FTL this week (and finally managed to beat it) so this is right up my alley. Thanks for the review Mac (thanks for all the reviews), I'll be pulling the trigger on this one.
Reminds me of an old game XIII, same kind of art style. I appreciate games that break out of the soul crushing, mind numbing, cookie cutter, generic rip offs. It's appreciated and refreshing.
Great game! I've played 59 hours and still not beaten it so it's well worth the money and it being inspired by System Shock 2 was a must buy for me. It does get repetitive eventually but even when it's repetitive, it's still addictive
"Festival of lies" reminds me of REM's It's The End Of The World and 'tournament of lies', which is pretty appropriate. I'm really liking VB, it's my first Rogue-like and I still don't really know what that means but VB is good fun. Some nice, fairly simple gameplay but challenging enough to keep you on your toes.
This game is great and has a ton of potential too. I could see this title going Binding of Isaac route. Keep release new content, weapons, craftables, enemies, ship types and layouts, or bigger DLC. I really hope they do this as the game loop is just stellar.
Best Indie game this year would be Risk of Rain 2 imo. Hell it's in early access and it's still damn good. I do like rogue lite/like stuff though so I'll check this one out!
One of my favorite games of all time, have probably 600 hours combined between pc and xbox (great port btw) there was a pretty large update a few months after release with new challenge modes that add to the replay value as well as twice as many new ship varieties and enemy types. Incredibly addicting and hilarious I cannot say enough good things about this game!!!!
It's one of those games that makes you say "one more ship... ok just one more... ok I'll just do this one before stopping... maybe one more... and so on until... OH SHIT ITS 6AM!?!" All I can say is thank christ it was the weekend!
Hey i was just wondering is you are able to make a list/vid of games to play over summer. me and my friends have been really struggling to find games to play and i think i would be a great help.
This is the first game in probably half a year that truly looks compelling - this looks absolutely fantastic! And, it's actually a single player game that has a decently long game play and looks to be halfway worth a fuck!!! I can't believe that I'm about to say this... I'm actually interested in a video game in 2019!!!!!
ACG mentioned XIII in his void bastard review and said they are making a sequel at the moment... dunno how accurate that is but he's usually pretty reliable
I've been considering this game since its release. The only thing stopping me from buying it, is that I can't figure out whether or not there is a point at which you actually beat the game. For instance, collect all the things needed to repair the ship and escape. If it's a procedurally generated "collection game" that goes on forever, I'd give it a miss. Does anyone know?
This looked awesome and you've just confirmed it - thanks man :D PS - I really miss playing Battle Isle 1-3 and need something up to date but very similar...

Can't wait to hear your opinion on Stadia
elaborate exaggeration expo? :)
"Festival of lies" = perfect description.
Worth A Buy cant freakin wait for your content on E3

Ah, a comic bewk style you say? That's interesting in my bewk
The fact that the one gun is called a "clusterflack" makes me want to buy the game immediately

My arse:
Definitely worth a scratch
Isn't about how it looks? I love how it looks! :D
before watching. ive been playing and its 100% worth a buy! the art direction is amazing!
mushy I’m so glad people can appreciate something that’s not just the best attempt at photorealism.

Look any good on the switch?
@@jasondp3546 I have it on PC. I'll get it on the Switch later
This art direction reminds me of XIII. So hyped for the new one coming
I received a 25% discount coupon from Steam for this game because I already own System Shock 2.
I came here to say this - that equates to getting £6.25 off, making even more worth a buy
10/10 Art style, love rogue-likes and fps. This is just a perfect combination.
Try Kenshi. Really a hidden gem!

The last game that nailed the comic book artstyle for me was Cel Damage on the original Xbox
P.S. And Viewtiful Joe
the best one was XIII from ubisoft
I don’t game, Mack, but I watch all of your reviews. Much love from way down in Texas.
I think the style is more like XIII than Borderlands tbh
Looks and humor combined screams borderlands
"I don't know what compelled me to fly into that thing" yep sounds exactly like what I would do
gotta find out one way or the other :P
You’re one of two game reviewers whose opinion I trust. Not ign, Kotaku, or any of those games urinalists. Keep up the great work!

Wow this game uses sprites pretty damn cool!
From the video I can tell Mack's set the Field-of-View slider to max ...
id love to see a deep sky derelicts review from this channel. the art style in this game is very cool, deep sky style is quite similar.
whispers..."of the developer"
that title was just meant for mac to read out wasn't it. Geordies say 'bastard' so well.

They came from the Void, bastards!: The game
:-)
tHE BLOODY VOID CANT LET US LIVE IN PEACE
So basically a mix of FTL and Hand of Fate packed into an FPS? I need this game!
Free on Epic right now, pretty excited.
Any chance you will take a look at Between the Stars?
I saw it as a recommendation on X box and was not really sure about it, but after your review its in my shopping card now. Thanks Mack :-)
