My younger daughter had very troubled teenage years, full of anxiety, depression and self harm. I sent her this song and said it made me think of her and when she listened to it, she just cried. She is now a wonderful, confident, clever and beautiful young woman in her mid 20s but every time I hear this song, it brings the tears. Great cover, many thanks.
I'm not a young man. And last year, I was listening to this song a whole bunch for some reason (I wouldn't have thought of it as my favorite Joel song)-- but I thought a kind of bookend would be to alter the lyrics to fit the same narrator, talking to the same person, but toward the end of the second person's life, and making that second person more reflective of what's happened since that song came out. (I also had the anxiety, depression, and self harm). Perhaps extra poetic that he wrote this about his father. Here. You can be the only person that will ever see this (if that). The phrasing is a bit off, but works if you find it: Hurry up, you lazy child You were kinda ambitious for a little while And we know you're so smart But also know you're really afraid You put out the fire, gained worry and doubt There's a lot less to you since it burned you out So much you won't do and Oh too many hours in the day-ay-ay And now that the truth is told You didn't get what you want But you sure got old You never really kicked off and now your time is almost due I think you realize.. Vienna wasn't for you Hurry up; you've still got time You could be much more than jokes After a bot'le of wine. It's just not that romantic to be borderline for life "A shame", describes the life you lead There's panic and sadness and unmet need You always thought you were wrong And wouldn't stand up for what's right You had no passion, you had no pride There was never any hope of being satisfied Live on, and those debts will all come due Why don't you realize.. Vienna's not for you Hurry up, you lazy child Your phone hasn't rung in a very long while So what? It's not like it bothers you I think you realize... Vienna don't want you And now that the truth is told You didn't get what you want And you got so old You never really kicked off and now your time is almost through-ooh-ooh Now that you realize... Vienna's not for you When did you realize.. Vienna ain't for you?
@@Kauffy901 Hi Kauffy901. I'm so sorry to hear that you suffered similar mental health problems to my daughter and I hope this song, in all its forms, brings you some solace. You obviously have a way with words/lyrics and I feel humbled that you felt you could share this work with me. Take care and all the best.
i’m nearly eighteen and i cry every time i listen to this song because i remember when i was 14 and depressed, anxious and with very bad self harming. now it brings me peace knowing i’m okay and happy❤️
Hi eysebeia, I'm so sorry to hear of the difficulties you had but happy that this song brought you solace and that you are working through the bad times. I was with my daughter a few days ago and she still loves this song. Music can be such a healing factor in all our lives. All the best and take care.
Well, ladies this is one of your absolute best ever. To take a piano song play it on acoustic guitars and also add harmonies, breathes new life into one of my all time favorites. You did Billy Joel proud.
As a massive Billy Joel fan, I am normally really picky about people covering his songs, but that was absolutely beautiful. From the quality of the guitar playing to the vocals and harmonies, I can't fault a single thing. Absolutely stunning! Well done x
I was enveloped in the wonderful sound of the guitar, and as I listened to the harmony between the two, for some reason tears fell down my face. (I didn't understand the meaning of the English lyrics though) I was really moved by the wonderful acoustic music.
GREAT choice!! Billy himself says it’s in his top 5 favourite Billy Joel songs. Your beautiful singing and playing is only overshadowed by your exquisite musical taste…LOVED IT!❤
Call me Vienna because I wait for you every Sunday.😊 When you bestow your lovely singing and playing upon us, you always bring many smiles and lots of inspiration. Thank you, Elle and Toni. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.
Ah man - this is such a great cover of a brilliant song. I used to list to the BJ album a lot when I was a kid and this brought back lots of pleasant memories. Thanks
Sometimes I worry the music I grew up with (like Billy Joel’s) will be ignored by future generations. Thanks for calming my fears with this lovely cover.
You two are just so good at this. Toni is a better guitarist than I ever will be. Elle, your voice is literally a hard counter to the very concept of reverb.
wow! this is one of my favorite songs of all time and one I often share at karaoke. this is my first time stumbling upon y’all, and I am enchanted. thanks for your offering!!
I’ve worked very hard to quit worrying about my grandchildren’s future as I know there is little I can do to change the world that’s coming. At least the future will have Elle and Toni making music in it.
One of my favorite songs and Billy Joël is not easy to cover well! Just perfect! Greetings from Vienna/Austria ;) (saw his Joëls father sometimes, who used to live here... )
7 months ago? HOW did I miss this one? One of my fave Joel songs and a fine job you did with it as usual. Not sure if it's called "Bottle of red, bottle of white"? but that is another fave. Hard to beat the stranger of course.
Fist heard you both half a decade ago, covering HAVEST MOON with your buddies Josh and Carson. Hope Sunday mornings with you both is back! Your fans have become air-conditions with time. for your talented performances.
This one put a big smile on my face! Vienna is my all time favorite Billy Joel song and I'm proud to say I've seen him perform it numerus times (most recently here at Madison Square Garden). Great job! Thanks!
Beautiful Elle and Toni! Billy Joel is from Long Island New York and loves and has performed in Montauk New York where our family has a home. 🌊 🏄♂ 🏖 🎹 👍
Such a wonderful laid-back song by a couple of wonderful laid-back ladies. Could the melody and harmony have been any better? Nope…can’t imagine how! Easy listening at its best. So calming. Thanks you, ma’ams. More, please…much more.
Wow! There you are again presenting this fine art piece of music and craftsmanship 😊. Missed your weekly "Happy Sundays" - coffee-greetings-sessions so much! Welcome back on YOUR STAGE 🎉❤ (early morning in Germany)
What a fantastic arrangement! I was singing this song to myself just a couple of weeks ago in - of course - Vienna. It was only a few days after coming home that I discovered these two brilliant individuals, who've fast become my favorite people on the whole damn internet. Brilliant performance. Can't wait for what's next!
Holy smokes... ladies this was just beautiful. When The Stranger came out, I never cared for Vienna all that much. Always thought it was over produced. Buy your version is simply hard to stop listening to. The simplicity of the acoustics and vocals (which are superb) is just outstanding and brings to the forefront the lyrics. It's actually a well written song. Thank you for posting this.
Love my Billy Joel, this song is a fav. Very cool that you play it on guitar. I play it piano from sheet. It's not a simple song. Good job Toni! You two rock!
It was fun listening to you and to watch those likes climb (and climb again) as you sang "Slow down you crazy child". I'll now turn my attention to the song and your interpretation of it. Thank you very much.
One of my old favourites - and done without piano? Astounding! And the duo-voice moments were perfect, too. This was truly great stuff ... though if I'm honest, I'd rather enjoy you even "weakly" weekly Sundays over these smash treats sometimes. All good, always, Cheers
one of those ones you know is gonna b e perfect before the first note even rings...beautifully done 😊(also always love seeing the outtakes...makes us all feel in good company 😅)
That was great and I’m definitely going to try and steal your version. This song was really on my mind as our daughter is studying in Rome for her freshman year in college, took a weekend trip by herself to Vienna a few weeks back. Thanks it was lovely
My first thought--even before you reached that first electric summerwarm mmm--was that soon as this song reaches its end I'm going to listen to it again. And that says so much about how all the elements working together come rolling off the screen in this super, mightily sensitive reading. The attention to how the chords should be timed; the tricky picked transitions made good; the words expressed in nonfussy natural diction, and most of all, the story told like you both see it--in that unfeigned kind of singing that most artists just strive towards--make for a directline video. Your harmony is the best I've heard it--simply f&@*ing fantistic. Eleven stars...moh

Here. You can be the only person that will ever see this (if that). The phrasing is a bit off, but works if you find it:
Hurry up, you lazy child
You were kinda ambitious for a little while
And we know you're so smart
But also know you're really afraid
You put out the fire, gained worry and doubt
There's a lot less to you since it burned you out
So much you won't do and
Oh too many hours in the day-ay-ay
And now that the truth is told
You didn't get what you want
But you sure got old
You never really kicked off and now your time is almost due
I think you realize.. Vienna wasn't for you
Hurry up; you've still got time
You could be much more than jokes
After a bot'le of wine.
It's just not that romantic to be borderline for life
"A shame", describes the life you lead
There's panic and sadness and unmet need
You always thought you were wrong
And wouldn't stand up for what's right
You had no passion, you had no pride
There was never any hope of being satisfied
Live on, and those debts will all come due
Why don't you realize.. Vienna's not for you
Hurry up, you lazy child
Your phone hasn't rung in a very long while
So what? It's not like it bothers you
I think you realize... Vienna don't want you
And now that the truth is told
You didn't get what you want
And you got so old
You never really kicked off and now your time is almost through-ooh-ooh
Now that you realize... Vienna's not for you
When did you realize.. Vienna ain't for you?

I think she has music in those finger so fun to the the effortlessness
That first harmonized “hmmmm-mmmm”: mind-blowing.
So well done.
Yes. Stunning!

Thank you for your reaction. It was you who drew my attention to these sublime harmonies.
i subscribed, liked and came straight to the comments, fully based on that harmony.

Do you worry that you're missing out on music from their generation?
Hopefully you don’t ignore the music of the generations previous to yours.
Billy Joel’s music is timeless. Great music endures eg you can find covers of Blind Faith music by 20s/30s.
Stop worrying .. every little thing will be alright
Don't worry, quality will always come through 😊
I have MISSED YOU!!!!! Sundays are perfect with your songs. This one is my generation of nostalgia and I am so glad to see it coming around again!!!
Oneof my favorites Billy Joel tunes... underated in my opinion.
Loved the harmonies in this : )
Even he’s surprised at how popular a deep cut is after all these years. It’s still in his set list and the crowd always pops when he starts it.
How blessed that you would return to our Sundays in the middle of this insomnia-filled night for me. I couldn't wish for better company. Thank you 💛
