    Apologies for the wiggy camera focusing... hopefully you still find value in this video! What are your strategies for those first settlements?

    The strategy of doubling on different people’s brick/wood is a good one.

      Thank you for the kind feedback! It really changes the way you look at the game and manage the variability of the dice.

    Common sense, my gf tends to win when she puts a settlement on the 2:1 port (usually brick) and she hoards the brick tiles, lol

      Ports are powerful. But even more so later in the game. From our experience, it works better to build your 3rd settlement on a port so the first 2 can maximize production for the early game.

    I had a bad habit starting my settlements on "good" numbers instead of the resources I needed. It was bad everytime.

      Yessir. All about comparative numbers. You just need better potential for momentum than your opponents, not necessarily good numbers.

    This is basic beginner guide, I have won many games settling on coasts, going for cities and dev cards.

    • @hardyhousegames

      It can work! But consistently... focusing on the spreading momentum triumphs.

    I usually focus on settling on 6 different numbers more than just brick and wood. Of course getting those early game resources are desired for those 6.

    • @jordanottesen1186
      @jordanottesen1186 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to play that way, but I've found good brick and wood is even more important. With good brick and wood, I can get *8* resource tiles with number diversity pretty quickly before my number-diverse opponents gets there. Then it's their 6 tiles vs my 8 tiles. Diversity is important, but that's more mid-late game stuff.

    Playing a game of three or four players is very different. You should say about which case you are giving advices for. It seems to me that your experience is with three players game.

      We play exclusively 13-player games.

    i start on wheat ore and sheep and see there is a good area around that place first

      @hardyhousegames  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try starting on wood and brick and see how it goes.

    My partner won her first game yesterday by settling on the favourable trade port in her initial settlement and had a clear lead early in the game. It's possible!

    • @hardyhousegames
      @hardyhousegames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair point, it certainly can work! We've just often seen that players who have a strong trade like that early on are more likely targeted to be blocked by the robber to prevent that strength. That and the initial lack of diversity in resources can make early momentum harder to reach.

  • @benharris3285
    @benharris3285 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah this is terrible advice for 4 player games. Strong ore/wheat is the number one priority in these games. Wood/brick is more important in three player games since there is more space on the board but getting an early city is still huge

    • @hardyhousegames
      @hardyhousegames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out our part 2 video on mid/late game strategy. Ore and wheat is huge, but if someone expands faster (which often happens in 4 player games) and gains more diversity in numbers, it's hard to keep up with them.
