    After more thought the last strat would be good for one game, but you have to consider the long term effects of it. If you play with the same people often they will nevvvvver trust you again. There will be way fewer beneficial trades for you in the future. You win that battle decisvely, but if no one trusts you you'll probably lose the war.

    Last strategy was great, but if the blue player was really tracking well and paying attention, he would have seen the yop for 2 wood. He would know that unless you wanted to trade the wood to green, a better card for you was sheep, which would complete a dev and empty your hand. So he is walking into the trap, and that’s not ruthless, that’s just on him. He should have demanded both wood. Or at a minimum a verbal commitment you won’t trade it to green.
    Note that he never guaranteed himself the spot anyways, as Green could hit 9 or 10 and port 4 ore for the wood.

    • @DyLightedCatan

    By the way some of the audio on this one was a little boomy. Not a big deal at all, but I think you could do a low shelf EQ at 200Hz and cut out probably like -3db and it would sound more balanced. If you weren't the one who added in that boost around 150-200Hz in this vid it could be a bass boost from being close to the microphone (proximity effect), which can be counteracted with the EQ cut I described

    Dear friend,
    I want so say "congratulations" for this great channel. I have never been into the classic Catan board game all that much - I actually prefer the card game version (Rivals for Catan) a lot, since I find that it offers way more tactical and strategic depth.
    However, with this channel and the countless hours of top level professional gameplay it provides, you have actually delivered proof that the common prejudice "no depth involved in the basic Catan board game - 80% luck" couldn't be further from the truth. It is great fun and I really enjoy watching your videos, taking part in your advanced thought processes. Also the post-game editing is very appealing and one can tell that you are putting a lot of effort into it - so keep up the great work!
    Now, I have a few questions and I hope you will find the time to answer them:
    1. Do you also play the Seafarers and/or Cities and Knights expansion from time to time? Are there any plans to upload some gameplay videos including the expansions as well? If not, why? Is the "pro / competitive playing scene" just mainly focused on the base game or is it a matter of your personal taste? Many people argue that it is only with the more complex Cities and Knights expansion that Catan gains some considerable strategic depth and replayability. However, as I have already stated above, your channel serves as perfect proof that this is not the case. This being said, wouldn't an occasional Cities and Knights game from time to time make for even more variety and even greater challenges?
    2. What is your opinion on the current state of Catan Universe? I have watched your video about CU from about a year ago and I basically agree with every point of criticism you have uttered there. Are you even still playing at Catan Universe at all? Do you still have hope that the platform will ever become really playable? Considering the fact that Catan is such a great trademark, that they are making millions all over the world with this game, it is simply flabbergasting to me that they haven't been able to come up with a high quality digital version FOR YEARS now. It is just beyond my scope, I cannot understand how such a thing is even possible in the year 2021.
    3. Have you ever tried the Catan card game "Rivals for Catan"? As it can be told from your videos, you are really into tactical/strategic skirmishes and seeking even the slightest of edges over your opponents. With this attitude, I think "Rivals" is a game you would also enjoy a lot.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you for the kind message!
      1. I play base game because it’s the most popular, shortest, and has the biggest competitive audience. I also haven’t really spent any time trying to get better at Cities and Knights so I don’t feel qualified to make videos on it.
      2. Catan Universe has improved, but still takes some steps backwards in progress by introducing new bugs. It’s very flabbergasting to me too, because if they did a good job, colonist.io wouldn’t exist.
      3. I haven’t tried it, but it sounds interesting!

    Ive got a question about the last one. The moment blue says yes to the deal, you do the YOP for 2 Wood. Can blue now cancel the trait to make you waste your devcard and denie your geniusly evil play (maybe even because of seeing through it)? Or is it a binding trade the moment blue says yes? The deal between you and blue is kind of a future trait because you need to play the dev card be4. And i dont even know if the last point matters at all :D.

    • @DyLightedCatan
      @DyLightedCatan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A verbal agreement is a non binding trade, so when blue sees that they can back out of the trade with the reasoning you might screw them over. Another way to prevent this is to have a verbal clause saying “if I do this trade you can’t trade green the spot to build there”

    I do quite like the extortion in that last play, however realistically that'll make you a huge target for the rest of the game. Blue would absolutely resent the play and avoid trading / target you and depending how badly you extort green the same could be the said for him and the third player if they didn't already would definitely see you as a manipulative threat and not trust any of your deals for the rest of the game. So this move better be good enough for you that you'll have an insurmountable lead.
    If you're playing in the qualifying round of a tournament, you'll also have to consider the possibility that you could end up playing against one of these opponents in a future game in that same tournament. So whatever extra 2-4 cards you're extorting this turn, could cost you a lot of good faith deals down the road.

      It was green fault for falling for it, this is not real life where sich tactics are forbidden by law (or some are) this is a game where everyone wants to win. They will learn and make sure it never happens to them again. They will think ahead better and in this example either not accept the trade for these conditions or make a deal that's shuts this play off. (like 2:5 or whatever)
      This is a very specific scenario where the one with yop had the Value of choosing who wins the race. He wants to get the most out of it, but it's also true that the next player after him is just first to build ud he somehow gets another way of wood.
      If you are mad at the one making the play then you stop your growth as a player.

    • @sdrawkcab190
      @sdrawkcab190 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mauer1 Who said I was mad? I started off my comment by saying how I like the play. I was explaining the drawbacks of making those kinds of plays though. If someone is going to extort players to such a degree, they'll have to consider the potential consiquences for doing so. Other players becoming unhappy with that player and working against them is absolutely something that'll happen (even in tournament play), and when presented with an all else equal decision on who to trade with they certainly wouldn't be accepting an offer from the player who just extorted the table.

    Here is a strat:
    - You have a monopoly in hand only.
    - Threaten to use your "knight" (down dev-card) to pull for eg wheat from an opponent.
    - Instead make them commit a wheat trade for your ore.
    - Then play the monopoly and get your ore back.
    Only do this if you win the game immediately, or are sure you don't need any more trades :p.
