Some strategies to share, against my better judgment: 1) Always maximize each turn. In other words, never pass up ANY opportunity to build or buy opportunity cards. Always use as many resources as possible each turn unless there's something very strategic you need on next turn. 2) Before using a monopoly, instead of trying to to trade to see what other people have a lot of, look at the stacks of resource cards. Whichever seems lowest, monopolize that. 3) Always keep track of who is ahead and make it very vocal so others know to be careful with trading and always use robber against them. 4) Never underestimate opportunity cards. I cant tell you how many games Ive been extremely disadvantaged with resources or building space but won or almost won by focusing on building cities and gathering opportunity cards.
To add to the first video when you said to watch other people placements in the beginning, you can also use this to your advantage by cutting off the resources of the 1st or even 2nd player. E.g. 1st player gets wood,wheat,sheep, as their first settlement. You now have 6 other settlements being placed before they can attempt to get clay/ore. Use this to your advantage and perhaps ask others at the table to help you cut off their supply
