Good stuff. Its a good idea once a quarter or twice a year to go over the best of the best in different shapes. This would allow you get enough reviews done and tested enough. So many paddles we forget and then see this and say oh yeah I forgot about that one. this is because we are all chasing new and forget the paddles from 314 months ago.
Great review Braydon ! You should do the same with Hybrids and Elongated ! Wanted to please ask why you did not include the Pickleball Apes Pulse V ? Where would it rank with these standard shapped paddles ? Have a wonderful Thanskgiving and keep up the great work Sir. Saludos from Panama.
Thanks, the video has gotten positive reception so far so I'll probably do it for other shapes too. And I filmed this video a month or so ago when I had just got and started playing with the V so it just missed it but it's a good paddle and slots in well with the ones I included. The V is a little tricky to rank because out of the box it's around the Jelly Bean and Neonic Flare Prime X but once it breaks in it's around the Engage Pursuit EX 6.0.
Good vid, I like the forgiveness of a standard shape but I've wondered at what height/arm-length (lack of) do you need to consider an elongated due to reach. At what point does reach become a more important factor than the forgiveness. Just wondering because I'm not very tall and I don't often generally see an empasis being placed on reach.
I've hit quite a few standard shapes and my overall favorite is the PIKKL Hurricane. The feel is to my liking and one of the spinniest paddle out there,
That's another good one. It played similar enough to the Volair Mach 2 Forza that I had to pick one or the other and I went with the Mach 2 because I thought it was a touch more forgiving than the Hurricane but that's being nit picky. Both are very good pure control paddles with high spin.
I have a number of the paddles on this list, and agree that I enjoy the 14mm Pkkl Hurricane Pro more than a lot of them. It's definitely a paddle that gets slept on a little.
That’s a fair ask. I do like and recommend that paddle and think it slots in well with this list. I had just recorded this a month or so ago and hadn’t played with it much at that point.
@ i own 2 . One i gave to my wife and she loves it. Still breaking mine in. It did play great today. Had so many perfect resets and plenty of angled topspin roll volleys.
I was wondering the same thing. Absolutely love mine! Best paddle I have played with ... very maneuverable at the NVZ, great control and feel on resets, good power for serves and drives, can put away balls etc. Been playing with it for 3 weeks and it just feels like the right paddle for me.
I also do love my pulse v. first standard shape paddle and fell in love with it. The grit on it is awesome. Though mine is starting to wear off a lot Got the jelly bean and all court on sale. Will be trying those two out soon.
Wait, how did the Pickleball Apes Pulse V not make this list? I've mained elongated paddles for 5+ years coming off the Ronbus R1 Pulsar and R1 Ripple beta. Ordered the Pulse S and the V only b/c of the buzz surrounding that standard/wide body paddle. Figured I'd send both back but loved the V and sold my Ripple. Massive sweet spot, you have to work really hard to miss-hit a ball and the balance is perfect, no perimeter weighting is necessary. A buddy tried my S and bought it from me since I was sticking with the V. Got tired of people wanting to try my V so I bought another, lent it to 3 people and all of them ordered one.
Could you at least tell me what you would have rated (like your 1 to 5 star rating system) the pickleball apes pulse v? Im curious where it stacks up on the power and control and forgiveness vs some of these
The V is a little tricky to rank because out of the box it's around the Jelly Bean and Neonic Flare Prime X but once it breaks in it's around the Engage Pursuit EX 6.0.
I enjoyed this comparison vid. Kinda surprised that the CRBN 2x and Engage Pursuit EX were not part of it. They are both included in your Hot List. I play with the CRBN 2x and am interested in a less expensive option that plays similarly.
Interesting that you find the Flare Prime X to be more controlled than the Monarch All Court. To me, switching between the two for a month, here is where I'd rate them: Power: FPX - 8.5/10 MAC - 6/10 Pop: FPX - 8/10 MAC - 6.5/10 Control (ease of resets, dinks, drops): FPX - 5/10 MAC - 7/10 Sweet Spot/Forgiveness: FPX - 7/10 MAC - 9/10
Great video! Love your insight and I know it keeps getting harder with more companies entering the market. Q: I've played Engage for quite awhile, always love the feel of the ball off the face currently playing Pursuit Pro EX 6.0. Any recommendations for something with similar feeling off the face and similar control but a little more power. I wouldn't mid going with a little thinner paddle - I know the difference isn't much but I do think the maneuverability of thinner paddles is a bit better. Favorite shot is the Drip.
I returned Monarch All-Court paddle as its face was too stiff for me. I am coming from MF2 14 and would like a new paddle with a little more power while maintaining the plush factor. Which paddle is this? I was looking at Hurricane 14mm as a potential option, but Flare Ti could be another option? What about Pulse V?
Yeah, the All Court does have a little stiffer feel to it. The Neonic Flare Ti would be a good one for more power but you would lose a little pop compared to the M2F. The Hurricane 14mm won't give much difference in power or pop. If you don't mind the shorter handle of the EX 6.0 it's a good option that will give you more power and pop but is still plusher feeling.
Spin on all of them is very good. Spin has come a long way the last couple of years and I think it's less of a factor when considering which paddle you want since it's not often you run into a bad spin paddle anymore. However, the one that felt unique there is the Ripple. You can hit some very dippy drives with it from time to time though it's the same as others at the net.
Where would the Pulse slot in if you had it on this list? Strange the Ripple is here and will probably never be released. But you probably didn’t know the problems they would have getting it approved since they keep threatening to release it.
Another great content Braydon, both the Flare Prime X and Monarch AC has the same price point, which of the paddles between Flare Prime X or the Monarch AC would you gravitate?
I personally gravitate to the Flare Prime X because I like thinner paddles for myself. If you do go that route it needs a little weight to bring it to life.
@49dubs Jelly Bean is standard leaning to wide-body shape whilst Prism Flash is hybrid and V7 is elongated. Prism feels a bit softer, so a bit more control, but Jelly Bean has a larger sweet spot and more pop/power than the Prism. Both are good depending on the shape you prefer. But price wise, I guess $65 beats $80, though $15 shouldn't stop you from getting your preferred shape which is important. The main question is do you want more reach or larger/wider sweet-spot (forgiving)
Do you have a hybrid video coming? 😢 I feel like companies are forgetting about hybrids and there are only a few hybrid 14s oriented for power/or all court
If I could only play one for the rest of my days I’d want one that I don’t think would hold me back as I continued to improve. So I’d want something on the more powerful side. Probably the ESQ-C 12.7 or the Joola 3S Scorpeus. Plus I think I have a developed enough soft game that I could manage a power paddle well given it’s the only one I play with and adjust to.
The Hyper is more forgiving and has a more comfortable, plush feel to it. It's a power paddle but not a big power paddle. The Ripple R2 is a big power paddle, lighter, and less forgiving.
Yes. Out of the box it’s lower power paddle and it plays well but I’m hesitant to recommend it and other gearbox power paddles because of they tend to break in too much and get too hot.
I’ve tried nearly all these. I’ve played for 8 plus years now exclusively with standard shape and shorter handle paddles. I don’t believe there’s a better paddle in this category than the Gruvn Muvn 16V. So many good choices out there but I think the GRUVN flies under the radar.
Thanks for the comment. I just barely got that one and other gruvns last week. Haven’t tried them out yet but they are on my list and now my interested is even more piqued. What do you like about it over the others you’ve tried?
@ I have tried probably 2 or 3 dozen paddles. I’m a bit of a gear junkie. Same way with golf. I played ping pong rather competitively when younger and lots of doubles in tennis. I gravitated to square shaped paddles early on and my other favorite and current back up is the carbon 2x and I also have a Gruvn 13 mm back up. I love the amazing sweet spot on the 16 Muvn and the spin it creates. The paddle has an excellent blend of power and control.
Thanks for this helpful video B. If you focused on only one version/thickness in a particular model, was this because you wouldn't recommend it? Im currently looking to upgrade from M2F 14, and was left wondering how the Scorpeus 3S Anna Bright and the ESQ-C 14.3 fit into the spectrum. Only the 16mm Joola and 12.7 Paddleteks were covered. Thanks again!
Good question, there are certainly many other good ones out there that I would still recommend but felt the ones I included would fit most people. For you, if you like the extra speed and lower launch angle of your M2F14 then the AB Scorpeus makes sense if you're looking for a jump in offense. It's a good paddle. It'll give you a good jump in power and pop. The ESQ-C 14.3 isn't as unique to me as the 12.7 imo. The 14.3 has a similar power and control output as the Monarch All Court but the All Court is much more forgiving.
The Prism series is less poppy than the Jelly Bean so it depends what you want. If you want the most help as you can on the control side then the Prism series is good but if you want a touch more pop and power then go with the Jelly Bean.
@ yes but only slightly and I honestly still thought that stock. I’ve got 0.05 on either side of the throat and 0.017 on each side of the head so I’ve only added about 0.13 ounces total so really not much.
One more question that just came to mind after watch Olsons Ripple meltdown, he said you didn’t think it was that much hotter. True? I thought the Beta was the best paddle( R2) I’d ever hit. And I never like standard paddles. It was power. Wonderful touch on drops. Dinks were easy once u understand less is more and just the soft muted feel of that thing. Then the edge guard issue happened to me, it got crunchy and hotter and more unpredictable. Even then, as I wait for my new version to come in, I still like the paddle though I preferred it out of the box versus now. Thoughts?
My tests for the Beta were putting it just above the Bantam TKO-C and then the new one bumped it up to the 3S & Gearbox level. So it got a bump but not insane. My opinion is that since it's within the realm of other, existing power paddles that the power level is acceptable and we shouldn't be calling for it be banned or anything. Now do I think that Gearbox, 3S, and Ripple is too much for the sport, yes, but I don't think Ripple is an outlier or anything.
It describes how much energy return you get on mishits or you can think of it as the size of the sweet spot. A paddle with low forgiveness has more dead spots around the edges while a paddle with high forgiveness is more lively around the edges.
I’ve played with the ripple and personally think it’s too powerful for the game. The pace of drives and counters is just ridiculous. I don’t understand how this passed testing

I'm not crazy about those ones. They are very heavy for standard shaped paddles which defeats part of the purpose of them being faster and forgiving. And then they give you a little extra power than many standard shaped paddles but that's primarily due to the weight where instead you can get a Monarch All Court that is just as offensive but lighter.

Thanks for the suggestion, I haven’t had a chance to try that one out yet, but it’s on my list!
Good morning! Have you played with the Gruvn Lazr 16s? Another interesting new standard shape paddle with a crazy low swing weight.
What are your thoughts about the Apollo?
Love this format! Please do this with hybrids and include the pulse S and new B&B Invader
Glad to hear you like the format! Depending on how the video performs I might do more of these in the future.
The power of the Neonic Flare Prime X and the ESQ-C are pretty close I feel like. Surprised you didn't classify it as a power paddle.
100% agree, its a hot paddle
So you haven’t looked at the Pickleball apes pulse V yet?

@@sethgauthier5963I like the 3S over the Hyper because the bounce is more predictable across the face making it easier to adjust to overtime.

I just got that paddle a week or so ago and haven’t hit with it yet but people have been telling me good things about it.

The Prism series is less poppy than the Jelly Bean so it depends what you want. If you want the most help as you can on the control side then the Prism series is good but if you want a touch more pop and power then go with the Jelly Bean.
Also important that Prism Flash is a hybrid shape and V7 is elongated whereas Jelly Bean is a standard moving to wide-body shape
How does the Esq-c play compared to the Thrive Azul?
Similar power levels but the Esq is poppier and lighter. The Azul is more forgiving though.
I still prefer my CRBN 2x over all of these. Cheers to new Trufoam 2 shape coming soon :)
Personally I definitely feel like the flare prime x has significantly more pop than the monarch all court and I’ve played with both pretty extensively

It would fall into the aggressive control area next to the Monarch Jelly Bean.

Can you explain what "forgiveness" means in pickleball?
It describes how much energy return you get on mishits or you can think of it as the size of the sweet spot. A paddle with low forgiveness has more dead spots around the edges while a paddle with high forgiveness is more lively around the edges.

J3K/J3KPro?
I'm not crazy about those ones. They are very heavy for standard shaped paddles which defeats part of the purpose of them being faster and forgiving.
