I recently played with this guy who is about 66 and he was using a cheap Kansas City Chiefs paddle from Amazon. I think he was the hardest hitting player I’ve ever played against.
Joola has come upon a great marketing strategy. They know that most players don't play in tournaments so they will buy these ultra-hit paddles for rec play and damn the paddle regs. And now, they've found a way to sell even more by making paddles they know will be banned, and then selling at half price (still way more than they should cost) replacement paddles. It's a thoroughly dishonest business model, but it works. It's essentially the same technique that makers of snake oil cures use to skirt FDA regulations about making health claims. You make the claim, knowing full well that it's illegal, but by the time the FDA gets around to telling you you can't make those claims, all the suckers you are marketing to already believe your product cures cancer, and keep right on buying it. (There are no penalties for this type of mislabeling, so all that happens is they are told to stop. No fines, no legal ramifications.) The big difference is that in that case, it hurts the buyer, but in the case of us rec Pickleball player, it hurts the buyers' opponents, not them. I'm sick and tired of playing people that have no technique but can hit ball at rocket speeds just because of their paddle.
If you are leaving balls high, they are going to get punished at any level. Yes, power paddles help put the ball away easier but if you can work on your thirds, resets and depth you will not have an issue. You are getting better by playing against these players as you can easily recognize your bad shots because they are getting smashed. Play a little of the kitchen line and if it's high...lettem fly!
Another take: "Effective July 1, 2025, the Joola TA-Mod will no longer be certified for production. However, it can still be used in USAP tournaments for an additional 18 months, as delisting cannot occur until then. It appears that USAP may be setting itself up for another class action lawsuit by trying to implement a 6 month delisting under other wording? PICKLEBALLBZ"
what about the players who bought the MOD when it released in July since it was usap approved... do we not get into that program since it isnt November 1st and on? Seems kind of bs... To preface I bought the MOD ta and ended up not liking it and bought the J2K. But still a $300 paddle to be worth nothing to tournament players because of the time they bought it? Seems like the majority of people bought on release day (in July) vs November 1st and on. Seems VERY intentional
This is deeper than you know. Let’s look back a few years ago. Ben looses to JW. JW was playing with a Crbn paddle at the time. Ben was using the Franklin paddle and getting ready to switch to joola. Ben complained about the Crbn. The US Open starts. Joola was a big sponsor of it. Ben switched to joola. Tournament starts and then the Crbn gets banned. At the same time. The joola wasn’t passing the test. But officials looked the other way. That’s on video. Now look at what has transpired since. Joola now has their own organization to play in. The Ppa.
Oh I remember it well… not sure how much of that was JOOLA itself or the obvious influence Johns has over the org but I don’t think your theory is far fetched
I am glad to see some paddle bans of these hotter paddles. I hope more are coming and I hope better tests for power are coming as well. That said, this seems to be a sort of collusion with these manufacturers with USAP to delist some they were going to discontinue anyway which is, I guess, better than nothing. However, I never really thought the Prokennex paddles were hot enough to warrant delisting. In any event, I hope there is some limit placed on the exit velocity of paddles so as to not have them change the game dramatically from what it is.
@@pickleballtechdude I think COR is a simply ratio: exit velocity over entry velocity. So if a paddle is .45+, it rebounds pretty hard. The ProKennex paddles used to be considered pretty hot and probably still are and can be even hotter if they weren't edgeless with enough perimeter weighting.
Thank you for the interesting and informative insight on the current paddle bans & delistings! Could Joola’s discontinuing the Mod perhaps be some posturing for their lawsuit? Looking forward to your paddle awards!
Curious, why would you say that these paddles would still be okay for rec play? If they are too hot for the pros to handle why should we be subjected to them? We can hit just as hard, are you implying we are better at defense?
This should mark the high point and do not cross point for pickle ball paddles. Joola gets props for pushing the limits. Now they have been whacked and will have to compete on other paddle features.
Joola’s pretty much lost me as a customer. I have a Mod TA-15 14mm and the fact that it, a $280 paddle, is being delisted and ceasing production _less than a year_ after it was introduced is a joke. Especially considering they knew PBCoR testing was starting to be enforced last month and they introduced the Mod TA anyway. And then cutting out from recompense us customers that bought a Mod before their arbitrary Nov 1st cutoff? A slap in the face. I’m going to keep playing with my Mod until it breaks (and it will as most do) then move onto something else. Speaking of, I’m curious if/how they’ll honor the Mod’s 1 yr warranty now. Do you know?
That’s a great question. I’m not 100% sure but I would assume so. This date cutoff appears to specifically apply to customers trying to take advantage of trade-in for the Pro 4 series
Just saw in the trash Joola app that my 1 year warranty was just reduced to 6 months. Joola, you owe me a legal paddle or money for my 3 month old paddle.
The Mod is literally just the beta Joola Gen 3 that got banned. I knew the Mod would eventually get banned the moment it was introduced and didn't buy it for that reason.
Fwiw, I bought my MOD in July right when it got released and it finally core crushed on me a week ago. I contacted Joola support with a video proving the core crushing by the crackling sound when I press the center in my fingers and they approved me for a return for replacement. I've heard some was able to replace with a Perseus 3S so I'll probably ask for the same, or a full refund so I can move onto the Pro 4 when that comes out in March.
No way the ProKennex paddles should be on the list I have the Black Ace Pro. I have another very popular paddle ( won't mention name so they don't try delisting) that is not even considered a power paddle and yet it's much more powerful than my Black Ace Pro weighted to (8.95oz).
This is why pickleball will never be taken seriously. The game and the tech is evolving...let it evolve!! I dont play with the MOD but when i play against players using them i know the balls coming hot and high balls will be punished....so I adapt. If you cant handle power paddles you are either not the level you think you are or simply need to adjust your strategy. Does it make playing matched players tougher to beat....id say yes but its not an unfair advantage. If you are willing to pay $300 for a paddle that will not last long and will certainly not stay that hot for long....good for you. Former and current tennis players have taken over this sport....time to adapt people.
I don’t understand your first sentence. Are you suggesting that other sports don’t regulate their equipment standards? I think Tom Brady would differ with that opinion.
Today Gearbox released a statement that in January they're releasing the Pro Power Ultimate to replace the Pro Power Elongated. That's likely what's in the box from Gearbox. They're offering assistance to players who own the Elongated.
This is related to the post stating at certain dates the CoR will drop by a tenth or hundredth isn’t it? Ir remember there were two proposed drops at different dates. Possibly three.
Possibly? There’s 2 drop dates where the value should drop by a hundredth but USAP still operates with one value at initial testing and then an acceptable increase tested at tourneys so these were definitely well over the limit to have been given the axe already imo.
To be clear this does not impact the Gen 3S paddles at all as those are currently UPA approved not USAP approved. The Pro 4s are yet to arrive to me but I’m sure they will be powerful as well!
@@superweeb6969 is it just one paddle? Or is it another set of paddles like the 3s. I’m on the fence on buying a 3s, but if they are upgrading in a few months I should just wait…

From what I understand Gearbox is offering some level of assistance to PPE owners! Imo it’s on the companies to give people they’re money back but to be fair 6-7 months is the average lifespan of a paddle anyways
@ Pickleball is obsessed with rule changes totally unnecessary imo - by the way I enjoy pball a lot and the pro game is way more interesting with speed and better athletes
You joke but you probably don't realize how tennis' decline pretty much matches the racquet and string changes that have occurred in the last 30 yrs. Like pickleball it was a much slower, lower technically skilled and less athletically demanding. An average player didn't need super strokes, spin or power to participate adequately just had to get to the net to volley. Now hardly ever see any net play. The technology fundamentally changed the nature of the game. If you start losing the average Joes because they can't compete adequately you'll be losing future interest in the game. The great appeal of pickleball initially was the shorter learning curve, reasonable pace and variety of skills and tactics. Families and people of varying generations could all play together. When it becomes a one-dimensional power game the appeal to many is lost. Quite honestly think the game might be better off if everyone had to play with the same wooden paddle. It would be more about technic and tactics than who has the best technology
@ I understand your points….but personally I am interested in watching the pros play a fast game - the rec players will always play - likely less than 1 percent of players play tournaments
Trampoline effect has to be the dumbest rule. Golf authorities have instituted similar rules after much controversy. In the end, the effect to a driver is something like a few yards gained. In other words - statistically and practically insignificant. I would posit that if you did robot testing with pickleball paddles that you would find similar outcomes.
I would like to know if all buyers can join together in a class action lawsuit, so that our money is returned and there are regulations for companies like these that do not act in good faith.
Noodle arms swinging a juiced paddle. No thanks. Generating ones own power is what I appreciate the idea of skill development and natural ability rather than a trampoline paddle. This kills the game.
