Because unfortunately I think a very significant influence on her attraction to black men is the lifestyle she had growing up in the hood of The Bay, being a teen then young adult in the heart of the 90's. The era was huge for gangsta rap which I think highly fueled her fascination with rappers and I'm sure a fair amount of the guys in her neighborhood were aspiring to that glamorized thug look and attitude like most ppl do with trendy things of the time. I do feel that her attraction may not have been as strong if she grew up in a different atmosphere, especially with a mother like Mama Mai. Mama Mai has MANY wonderful qualities, but she has made some side-eye worthy comments in regard to skin color on a few occasions that are unfortunately typical of many older Asians due to traditional beauty standards (of course I'm generalizing a bit; Asians are of many shades and many cultures.) I don't know her personally to say she isn't naturally attracted to black men, but I do think her attraction is at least a little bit fetishistic. I feel she may be attracted to the way "slightly rough, thuggish ruggish bone, hood with a heart of gold" looks on black men more so than black men period. She usually only seems to be attracted to the black guys who look like they would have been cast as the villain in a hood classic, or the black guys just about everyone find conventionally attractive. I love many things about her, but her view of black men- and black women- concerns me and I can't ignore it now that I really see it. I really hope I'm wrong because I wanna believe that there is at least one knowledgeably diverse Asian public figure who isn't anti-black that can help bridge the gaps in the very tainted relationship global racism bred and festered long ago among our communities.
I mean it is a big accomplishment so I would def do the same.. its both difficult to get in as well as get through so respect to her and to all graduates out there!
