Best shots of a grebe that I've seen. I've made a few over the last two or three years but always at a distance. I watched one diving for crawfish in The Pond where I like to photograph birds. I didn't even know that pond had crawfish in it until the grebe came up with several with huge claws.

Some nice views there. Agree about the skittish nature, but they are often inquisitive too. I've found they will sneak along, suddenly popping up to get a closer look at the strange person lying on the bank, and then disappearing again before you can lay a lens on them! And if you do get a shot its usually that rear end facing you.

Cracking images. Where I live, the Dabchicks on the country park pool are timid, though hundreds of people walk close by every day, but those on the canal/river are quite tame.

Wonderful photos and video and a great laugh at the end. There are sometimes Little Grebes on my local park lake, and I've seen them from as close as 1 to 2 metres! I've been filming them with my camcorder, but need to try some still shots now.

    Enjoyed the video Mike,
Recently the boat trips have restarted organised by friends of the canal however probably paused during the recent lockdown events.

Beautiful stills and video. They look very much like our Australasian Grebe (a little darker) who also tend to always have their backs to you and are also very shy.

Great information as always ty. I'm photographing and filming wildlife with my Nikon Coolpix P 1000, would appreciate if if you have any tips, I'm on a tight budget so don't say buy a better camera. Ty.

Floating hides are an interesting challenge but can be great fun. I find that is's hard to do sessions longer than two hours, even with a full drysuit. It just gets too cold.
