  • This short introduction to the Isle of Man offers ten curious facts about the island and its people.. Set in the Irish Sea, this island of mists, and myths, lore and legends, Ellen Vannin offers history and an overlooked holiday resort. Who would have expected to gind wallabies in the Irish Sea?
This video hardly mentions tailless cats or TT motorbike races but concentrates more on the natural beauty of the island and its customs, some of which have lasted over 1000 years.
How many people have heard of Loughtan sheep or a Trislelion. The whole island is a denoted UNESCO Biosphere reflecting the unique landscape and conservation work that protects so many precious characteristics of the island.
Future videos will explore detailed parts of the island including the capital, Douglas, Casttletown, Port St. Mary, Port Erin, Peel and Niarbyl where continental plates meet in a tiny bay.

I grew up in the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 I had a wonderful childhood there, I’ve lived mainland Uk just over 9 years now. This time of year I especially miss it with Hop Tu Naa still cannot get used to Halloween over here and children not singing at your door 😊

Don't times change! My memories of the island go back to 1947 staying in Lily Duggan's boarding house in Port St Mary while her brother ran Duggan's Coaches around the island and the steam railway went much further than it does now. There were even ferries from Stranraer and Llandudnow

Great video and a good display of the Manx weather. Rain and fog one second, glorious sun the next…. Snow 5 minutes later.

You know the island then! I am still trying to edit as much rain as I can from my Douglas footage. It rained! Castleown was brighter. The two capitals video should go live within the next week. Thanks of the comment

Manannan, with an emphasis on the first n.
Ellan Vannin, with an emphasis on the in, rhymes with cabin.
Other than that a lovely video thanks

Nick, you are a star. Thank you for those corrections. I guessed at Manannan and tried to remeber the cabin crew of Wanx Airlines greeting us at Ronaldsway. So it is vannin, not vaneen.
I hesitate to think of yourreaction to my attempts at Manx when I try to pronounce the Manx names of Port Erin and Port St Mary in the next video but any tuition will be appreciated as I still have Niarbyl, Peel, Castleown and Douglas videos waiting too be edited. My first visit to Mann was in 1946 and had many happy times on the island with family ever since. I wanted to pay tribute to a very special place. Thank you again

One small issue - Tynwald Day is July 5th - not in June

Thank you. Silly me! It is a national Bank Holiday too. I should have got that right.I do enjoy commments from viewers with contructive comments. I will correct it in the next Manx video. Best wishes.

@@theeccentricenglishman Thanks for your appreciation. Eccentricity is normal on the Island.

The Anglicization of Manx names in the 16th and 17th centuries removed the Gaelic Mac and Mc prefixes, resulting in Callister instead of McAllister for example.

It's possible this might have been recommended to me as I've been recently watching a lot of Isle of Man TT videos

I had my first summer holiday in Port St Mary in 1947. My parents met over there, retired there and their ashes are scattered in Colby Glen. There are two more Manx videos to follow when the current backlog syubsides. Birmingham canals next. Best wishes
