- A talk about Success from a successful person who had trouble finding it as a student...
Relationships form an essential foundation for a caring, vibrant and innovative school community. In order to best support our students' social, emotional and academic growth, we must challenge ourselves to expand our definition of success to encompass a wider range of skill sets and abilities. Each student has a unique story and it is our responsibility to learn these stories. We must create an environment that supports and celebrates the diversity of all students. As a secondary Vice Principal in the Richmond school district, I am privileged to work alongside colleagues, students and families to do just that.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
She talks about how she was "lucky" to have teachers who tried to interpret who she was as a student, however she never did this for students at the school she taught at. I'm one of those students.
I had to pay attention to the video for second time and voilá... didn't notice the first time Sarah is an educator. I'm an educator, too...or at least I try to be one every day. I studied in an elementary school that I really hated, and as Sarah mentioned, I never felt I fit there. Don't want to blame my family background, however, teachers and parents in my time had a very different view on what a good student was. There was a moment in my life that I thought I was not going to finish my studies. But God is amazingly good, He is always good and He helped me found my path. Now I am a teacher and I did three post grades. How I did all these? When I look back I don't have an answer... but believe me I THANK GOD EVERYDAY, I never felt I belonged to that school.
Ms Garr was such a great English teacher when I had her in Grade 8, and inspired me to break the fourth wall when coming to English projects and gave me 100% on my English Project for making a video. So proud she's on Ted Talks :3
Success is always doing your best.
Ms. Garr was one of my favourite English teachers I've ever had. Thanks for the inspirational message!
This is wonderful well done Sarah, school should not define us.
Thank you for this Ms. Garr. I attended Sullivan heights from 2008-2013. I never had you as a teacher but I had many friends that did. And everyone always had nothing but great things to say about you. And I believe that's because you really connected with your students. Happily surprised to hear you are now a vice principle! Congratulations - I'm sure Sullivan misses you.
Ms. Garr, you were probably one of the best highschool teachers I could have ever asked for :) So awesome to see how you're doing and still being amazing!
This is an honest, powerful message from a caring educator. Keep making a difference, Sarah!
