Never ever look at a person and think, "this person is unsuccessful", because we never know what success means to that person.

The way I see it, there's two types of succes. Inwards succes and outward succes. Inwards succes means living by your values, which is what really counts. Outwards succes, is measured by how well you do in the outside world, which is obviously also important, and there's nothing wrong with it. The big problem with focusing on outward success is that you simply don't have control over everything.
Example 1. You want to make the track team. You read all about training, ask for advice from the coach, and really push yourself in your workouts. But when you try out, you don't make the team. Did you fail?
Example 2. You value working cooperatively. You did your best to work with a group of classmates on a project, but in the end it fell apart because some of the others didn't do their part. Did you fail?
Example 3. You value working hard. Your goal was to make the best video ever on chord progressions. You worked hard and the video was decent. Did you fail?
In my opinion you didn't fail in any of the examples. You made a sincere effort to do what mattered to you. Sure, the world didn't give you exactly what you wanted. But you still succeeded because you acted in a way that was true to yourself.

I agree completely Mason - a little over a year ago I lay beside the road on a mountain descent in Mallorca. It was early April and I had just hit a brick wall doing about 50km per hour, breaking ten ribs, puncturing a lung, dislocating my right shoulder and cracking several teeth. But I did not despair - not even for a moment. Because throughout my life I have sometimes experienced setbacks and heartache, but I have always been able to get back on my feet. And here I am a year later, having had the most amazing Spring cycling season. With around 20 days of racing under my belt, I have been on the podium six times. Just great! It's all about self belief, beyond reason.

It's cute hearing things like this from someone in their 40s who lived during a time things weren't astronomically priced & there was still hope for the future. The fact he was able to afford to have a child speaks volumes for itself. Im 27. Ive worked a job since I was 16. I've almost finally completed my college degree in finance & have absolutely nothing to show for any of it. I have no money, no home of my own, no children, ive been in a long term relationship with a man who is in the same situation & came from a worse financial family set up than I did. We can't even afford to get married right now.

The only success that matters is the one you think up yourself, If you believe success is being able to have a nice little house making enough money to live comfortably than and your able to reach that, it doesnt matter if others think your lazy for going the easy life if your happy and feel successful then thats all that matters. But if you truly believe making 6 figures a year is success and your able to get there and your happy then thats great too.

Bibek Bhujel Thanks for you comment Bibek. And yes, you are right in that I can live the life I do today because of the hard work and sacrifices that I made. But the point of my talk is that rather than stay on a path of unhappiness, I chose to try to find another path in life. Many "successful" people never have the courage to do so.

@@JamieAnderson1971 If I was to think about that "follow your passion" idea, I'd probably try to make something out of myself as a musician, but one thing is musicians are not particularly known for making lots of money. The other thing I believe is that passions may also come and go... So I think it's certainly a good idea to first build up some financial safety in your life like you did. And then lots of doors are open for real, and then you can actually follow your dream without risking ending up screwed. So cheers, you're certainly someone to look up to!:)

Success is just the accomplishment of a set goal. We may lose ourselves trying to achieve something we don't even believe in. The ultimate success is to overcome ourselves. The main obstacle could be our own persona, specially when that becomes the goal itself. I see truly successful people in those who brought a benefit to society, the ones who gave us vaccines, science and technology among so many things. I also see success in someone who brings hope and peace when we need them the most.

Dear Azya, thanks for your comments. You are absolutely right - the reality is that financial stability and security is a necessity. But I would suggest that it is possible to pursue a career that can also deliver a sense of personal satisfaction - although this might mean sacrificing income maximisation. I also agree with you that success is about helping others - that is one of the reasons I share my story, and regularly speak with individuals who are trying to find their own moon.

What if you think happiness isn’t important and it doesn’t matter and that the whole reason why we’re miserable is because of our obsession over happiness
