Mark Jackson is easily a favorite basketball head of mine, and I believe he has some great qualities to be a leader and easily an NBA coach. Player's mostly love playing for him. Did he make some mistakes? Yes! But it was his first year and his potential spoke way louder than his mistakes. He deserves another chance. Guarantee he turns a team around. Crazy he wasn't allowed that chance.

AND ACCORDING to Andre Iguodala he also put players in positions to make a great payday when management did not want that for certain players. Mark Jackson is a players coach not a company man

He was fired because of how he related to others. Many people share his faith, yet do not wear it on their sleeve, bully others with it or allow it to dominate their coaching or personal style. If you cannot operate in a secular social collaboration, you will struggle in a melting pot environment. If you have never been secularly focused or on the religious fringe, you may not understand the infringement felt by the victims of aggressive religious imposition or inquisition or crusade or witch hunt, etc...

It's always been the elephant in the room. But, the thing that I've always found funny is that the NBA never had any issues with Phil Jackson instituting Buddhist practices within the team cultures at both Chicago and LA Lakers. He had their entire team participating in such practices and he's referred to as the "Zen Master." He was also strong willed just like Mark and he wasn't particularly liked by the owners of said teams either. So, what's the real issue?? This question is rhetorical by the way. Let the reader understand.

    • @jayws9294
      @jayws9294 ปีที่แล้ว +21

I was thinking the same thing. Jackson is more or less religious and strong-willed. Jackson is confident, high moral guy, loyal, well liked and highly competent. That’s screams threat for some reason. Meanwhile Luke Walton gets coaching jobs handed to him.

It's not a race thing, and its not a Christianity thing. Its a Conservative Christianity in the Bay Area thing. Jackson made several comments against same sex marriage and other equal rights related to orientation and gender identity. That bigoted bullshit doesn't fly in the Bay Area for obvious reasons. That being said, objectively he walked so Steve Kerr could run.

Organization picking the coach's assistants is a new thing relatively, most of the great coaches in nba history didnt let the front office pick their assistants. Phil Jackson, Larry Brown and Pat Riley didnt let the owners pick their staff. Owners and management just picked the head coach. The head coach is the person who is supposed to hire the staff. Do you see Robert Kraft telling Bill Belichick who to hire? I dont think so! People need to stop acting like it was "out of line" for Mark Jackson to wanna pick his own assistants. All the Organization is doing when they wanna pick ur assistant coaches is hiring ur future replacement. Coaches dont all have the same philosophy and when u bring in assistants who have differences in philosophy theyre gonna butt heads.

They won the title and should have won in 2016. Steph turned into an mvp. In Jackson’s offense Steph was not even close to being a top 5 player. Jackson didn’t know how to use draymond as he was on the bench. Draymond along with Steph are the key components that made the warriors unbeatable. So spear me with your Kerr hate.

It boils down to Jackson's personality, combativeness, and power-hungry and divisive nature. I'm honestly not sure if he's a tiger who can change his stripes this late in his life, but the bball IQ and coaching ability is there. It's the soft-power issues that he needs to adjust & adapt to.
I think the main reason he likes "his guys" (his assistant coaches and staff) was that they were loyal and kissed his butt. Whenever another strong personality butted heads with him, Jackson tended to divide the locker room in an attempt to oust that personality. It's not even a revelation that this might occur when he coached Golden State.
In his one and only season with the Utah Jazz (when he was 37), he actively tried to undermine starting PG John Stockton and even got several other players on his side. Jackson wanted to be the starting PG for that team to play his more to fast-break style, and didn't particularly respect Stockton that much. His locker room divisiveness became so bad that coach Jerry Sloan seriously thought about quitting mid-season, and John Stockton decided to retire after the season ended.
This is the personality that you get with Coach Mark Jackson, for better or worse. He presents himself as an affable personality on ESPN, but he is competitive, and his flavor of competitiveness is what you get when he's part of any team trying to win basketball. As a coach, he knows how to get the players as a faction on his side, which is how he gets his "player's coach" reputation. But NBA teams are organizations with lots of other moving parts and personnel besides players, and it requires balance to placate the right personalities to make the partnership a success.
Jackson's personality doesn't seem to work with anyone other than those who respect him and aren't threatening to his position. That is why he doesn't get another serious head coaching chance, in spite of his obvious success.

A much-appreciated presentation! Thanks. Interestingly, Jackson was criticized for not taking on suggestions for assistant coaches. That he wanted "his guys" with him on the bench. Allegedly, Steve Kerr's best friend, Bruce Fraser or "Q" (as he's called, interestingly) is Kerr's best friend. Kerr has been criticized by some of the beat writers and other media types around the Warriors, for not having a dynamic coaching staff. It is damn near a crime that strong-willed "black" coaches have a short leash, regardless of their prowess. I have seen this dynamic my entire life. Mark Jackson is worthy and a legend in New York. He has a right to his thoughts and worldview. Others do and it does not prevent them from prospering in life.

Sorry but there are some things that I don't agree with him not being a coach not only in the NBA but a coach even in the NCAA. He could be a major impact on any level and would definitely become a figure of leading young men especially in college. However, it's his decision IF he wants to be a head coach. We all have to persevere with some challenges that are placed in front of us. He did an OUTSTANDING job with the Warriors and I will say that GSW first championship was HIS doing.
NOW, with all these college jobs being literally handed to some former NBA players that are really not working, M. Jackson would be a great guy that could lead college players and bring in other coaches (both young and old) that are just as hungry as he is. Also, cannot push RELIGION on people. that is your thing so allow players to go but not be forced.
Now i heard you said that the owner said for Mark to not hire friends? SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEET....They ALL HIRE FRIENDS in the NBA, NCAA, NAIA, 9 to 5, and I can keep going. French Politics.
I know for myself that if I want to be back in the coaching field, then I am going to apply on ALL levels. There's more than the NBA that need his service. But I guess that ESPN money at the time was more lucrative plus less stressful and also he has his church in LA so don't know if he even has the time. I know for sure that If applies for a college gig, he will be hired at a D1 program that will respect what he demands from his staff and his players and be back in the mix.

The person that gets along, and has comparable talent will be chosen most times over a “malcontent”. I’ve seen it firsthand, and been part of management that has made these types of decisions.
All the self righteous feelings one may have won’t mean a thing when it comes time for job assessment. Life ain’t fair, people have feelings (men and women) and management and employees have cliques.

Good video! We always see guys who we think should be given a spot in the nba, a “why isn’t this guy here.” Thing. But I am gravitating more towards the owners, I think at least the homophobia thing is…possibly more true than not.
    Here are my thoughts:
1)I noticed that so Many of the commentators think that Jackson’s as fired because of his Christian beliefs and that “the elites” compote against him. That is right wing conspiracy talk. No Christians in this country are Persecuted to the extent that many believe they are. MOST nba and sports athletes are religious. That’s a stupid idea to think otherwise m. The reality is that the NBA ownership is full of the same workplace drama you’d find for any industry that is exclusive. If someone makes a bad impression. Well chances are that is passed down. Whatever he did was apparently so off that no one wants to touch him. Again, that isn’t saying a lot considering wife beaters have been given chances. But not everyone is treated the same.
2)executives control the team, the coach is suppose to abide by the owners. That’s unfair, but that’s what upper management is. In any industry you have to listen to your boss.
3)if the stories are true about Jackson with his religious discussions and actions, then yes that is inappropriate. You cannot force your players to abide by your extreme religious beliefs and actions.
4)the homophobia thing is tricky. It dosnt appear aside from hearsay, but a few things pop out. WHY would that be said about him? Like that specifically? Second, jackson did actually mention Jason Collins s and reportedly said this “ "As a Christian man, I have beliefs of what's right and what's wrong," replied Jackson. "That being said, I know Jason Collins, I know his family and I'm certainly praying for them at this time." yes that is homophobia. Did he actually say it? I wish we had more clarification on that but it seems odd that an entire organization would make that story up. People have been fried for less.
Ps. Man you sent hard on Stephen silos! Give him a chance! Lol
