- It's greasy out in the field but we're gonna get it done today and wrap up Harvest 2021. Onyx receives his first combine lesson. The throttle is a bit touchy but he will have it figured out in no time! There was no shortage of cab corn and no bunnies were harmed in the making of this video. We even got to pull out the Moline after Dad got the header trailer stuck in the mud.

Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

The look on Onyx's face, he's determined to line up the header just right, once he finally got it right, he looks up at Dad for approval. Reminds me of working with my Dad, :) but he's passed away, almost (1) year. Onyx it's these days that are the BEST :)
Could not be more true
Congratulations Onyx on first time driving your header the first time. This is great stuff for any farmers son.
They really are making memories for a lifetime here. It's a beautiful thing to see.
That's how I learned how to do it. But you had to throw your whole body into the lever to get it to engage. Kids have it SO easy now. 😃
Keep it up Zach! It looked like he did a great job. I treasure those memories with my dad some 50+ years ago.

Onyx is a hit. The expression on his face, his good questions, his desire to learn, awesome kid.
well they make good money and hes probably set for life. Who wouldnt.

@@josef5319 Nobody is, "Set For Life". Business climates change for what ever reason and many farms can and do go under. I've seen it happen in my own area of north central Illinois. Many kids raised on farms don't wish to stay and run a family farm. It's sad but it's their choice. After seeing grandfathers and fathers struggle with weather and mechanical problems and thing beyond their control, they walk away from it.
Love to see Onyx is all about the speed, can't hide the race car driver in that young farmer.
Definitely was FULL GO GO GO
Yes, he definitely was driving to*WIN!*
That is what happens when you you put the grain cart operator in the combine
I feel the need for speed! As Onyx pushes stick All the way forward! The look on Zach’s face is priceless.
Def like his Dad!! Love that Speed!! Full Send!!!!
That boy will have those memories forever. I’m 27 and would kill to be where he is in life.
Love how there was no hesitation with Onyx. Just get in the combine and poor the Coal to it. Full throttle or nothing for that young man.
Haha. Like farther like son. Must be the race car driver in him.
If you're not first you're last.
Onyx reminds me of when my son started helping me out with farming everything at first was wide open but they do learn eventually.
Hes probably used to the RT's where you gotta give them the juice
Idk why Zach was surprised that Onyx went full throttle, he’s a budding race car driver like his dad.
This is my most favourite vid because onyx looks so happy with you.
Onyx is such a bad ass. You tell him to go, he puts the corn to it and sends it!
He's following in your footsteps Zach, a hunter, racer, farmer and does it all at a high level.
No doubt you're really proud!
WTG Onyx!
I’m 65 and driven all kinds of machinery, and I don’t think I could run a combine with your confidence. YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!
I love seeing you and your son living and learning and having fun at the same time. Memories being made and a wonderful future in farming.
This footage 10 to 20 years down the road will bring endless laughs and smiles to your faces…brings back many memories from when I used to farm with my dad.
It sure will! When I started learning to drive combine we took videos and I still look back occasionally
The look on Zachs face when he floored the gas in the combine 😂 what a great moment
@@상희-r6x q
Onyx just wanted to prove it was possible to combine at 10mph...leaves more time for Nintendo lol.
@@jeffburnham6611 😂
I like your. son telling Dad slow down “. I don’t want to go so fast “. Relax Dad. Let him . feel comfortable
My 9 year old daughter ran the combine for the first time last weekend in Ohio. The smile on their face and the pride we feel as farmer parents is not something that can be matched!
that smile on the proud dad's face :-)
I love how patient you are when teaching Onyx the ropes of combining. It really put a smile on my face. Also love how serious he is while doing it. Well, until he hit something, then the grin came out :D
It is sure a nicer combine than the one I learned on ! claas dominator 98 baby ! Go Onyx
16:20 …… that is a proud moment right there !! Even for me …… a TH-cam friend
Had to keep rewinding to 18.32 minutes onyx’s face had me in stitches what a lad 😂😂😂😂😂 great video 👍
Same!
16:23...Nothing like the look on the face of a dad who just watched his son succeed. In anything really, but something about when it's something you also love.
I've been watching your channel for quite some time now, and i could honestly feel the same sense of pride you Zach felt when Onyx combined. Best regards from Sweden 👍
Watching this really got to me. I remembered my grandpa teaching me how to drive his Oliver Super 66 when I was 13ish..and HOLY COW, I was hooked. I work in finance, but went back up to Iowa for a vacation to help bring in the corn. Drove chaser cart and combine and I'll most likely have that vacation on the books till I die. It was heaven, and it was Iowa.
Its the determination and willingness of Onyx that makes me believe once again the future of our country is in good hands. Great Work. Thank God For Farmers
So God made a farmer. Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving from Texas!
The look on Onyx face was priceless when you told not to run whatever it was over, That really makes a sad happy when his kid is learning
I noticed the subtle smile on Zach's face as Onyx took to the task and did it well. At 16:20 he's trying to hide it, but it keeps on coming out, because he is so pleased. You two will never forget that time together. Good job.
16:29 when Onyx looks to dad see how he did and Dad is just holding back a big ol’ smile.
I remember learning to drive a stick shift on a 1958 Ford f600 grain truck with a two speed rear end and my grandpa just laughing at me when I got it because I was so happy. My grandpa gifted the truck to me and now it sits in our barn as a remembrance of growing up on the farm
Pretty cool dad moment there. The boy did good for the first time. Loved his eyes once that combine took off.
Well done, Onyx. I appreciate his hesitancy to go too fast when turning around until he gets a feel for what he's doing. Much better than being overconfident. I like the way you are willing to give him the experience at his age, yet don't overdo making him work. He's learning a work ethic, yet still gets to be a kid. Well done, Dad.
We didn't get to see Jim get stuck this year. Oh well, there's still tillage. LOL
I want to congratulate, Onyx on his beautiful Buck! There are many hunters out there, Onyx that will never see a deer like that one!
Thank you for raising your kids right!!!! My son got his first deer at 10 yrs old, and has been operating equipment since then, he is now 49 yrs old , has his own logging and tree service, and makes well over 6 figures a year , take home !!!! I don't think that he has ever played video games, except Atari, when he was young, and I am pretty sure that I buried that with my excavator years ago, when I thought he was spending too much time playing it.!! Love your channel, and God bless you and your family 💘
Magic to watch Onyx driving you must be so proud of him his smile is infectious and I’m dying to see more and more of him as time goes by - he’s a gem
Great video. Onyx look of concentration while operating around the 16:30 mark is priceless. And that look and laugh of his is great. Always enjoy the videos.
Watching you with your son in the combine was awesome. Brought back a lot of memories of my dad and I. Thank you and may God bless you and your family.
My dad taught me how to run an old 60’s case combine when I was a kid. Incredible memories.
Classic truck bid line: "I knew exactly what I wanted to pay and knew I wasn't going a dime over what I had in my head.....and I only went $200 over that."
Agreed. The best line
Yes sirs! Only $200 over for a square bodied Chevy that I got to drive/inspect? That’s a lottery win to me! Congrats! Let’s see……..haven’t finished entire video yet, but I will put $1,000 on who that square body is for!!!
I'm usually the other guy.
I was hoping it wasn't #4 bidding against him 👍
I went to go look at a old truck one sunday with a friend I thought he would buy it cause he flipped vehicales i was wrong i had to go home and tell my Wife i bought a 53 chevy pickup best money ive spent
The best job a father can do is to let your child learn by experience and be there when needed great job 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I like how Onyx 's instinct is to floor it. It reminds me of the end scene of Animal House right before they hit the bleachers. Ramming speed!
Well dad you said full throttle, and he did.😄
I love that you are teaching the next generation to run the combine. Brings back memories of when I learned to run the combine on a 6620 many years ago.
Dad; Don’t run it over…Son: “I think I missed him”. Best shared father son laugh ever.
18:35
What were they talking about? Some kind of little animal?
12:18 the glow on a dads face when he sees his boy getting it done... Priceless!
This brought back a lot of big memories from my dad 1st taught me how to drive the 7700 and even all the way up to our 9660. I can only imagine how proud you feel as a dad as I know mine is.
Reminded me of when my dad taught me to drive our combine. No side seat he stood on the side of the cab. I got one hour of instruction and I was on my on. I'll never forget it. Thanks for the memory
All I could hear in my head when Onyx was driving was "I wanna go fast!"
It's great seeing you teach him all the things you do. Making memories that neither of you will forget.
Brings back memories, Uncle John started showing me how to drive the machines at 11, I started off in an old Fiatagri 180-90 before moving up to bigger tractors and eventually a combine.
That look from Onyx getting Dad’s approval. Nailed it kid.
Yeah you could tell he wants it with that look
Wish there was a LOVE button! Enjoy every minute teaching him.
"If in dout, go flat out" comes to mind watching Onyx. He will soon be a better farmer than the actor who plays millennial farmer
could get the part of the son of the stunt double
I remember my first combining lessons with my dad for corn. I was 6 or 7 years old. The good old days I miss them
OMG! it just keeps getting better with onyx on the farm! You and him together are priceless!!
18:30 - 19:00 = priceless, father nd son farming and having a laugh! beautiful
Zach, I want to applaud you, Becky and your grandpa on how you treat your family and friends! You are a charismatic well rounded hard working guy! I found your channel a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoy your family’s journey! If you have time this winter and make it over to central WI, please reach out as I would love to take you and Onyx for a ride in a Snowcat at Granite Peak! Heck drive over for that alone!!!
Way to go Onyx. First time I drove combine I was 12. We were immigrants and I had to learn from a retired farmer in a language I barely understood. My father was in the same boat as he had always hired the combining done in Europe.
That boy of yours sure seems like a cool kid. I'm glad you guys got him on the farm when you did.
Ahhh, like others have said that expression on Onyx's face learning to combine. I remember those exact feelings when I was a kid a dad would teach me how to operatre new equiptment. I also remember always getting carried away with too much throttle /and getting a little gung-ho. Ah man. Great to pass those memories onto our kids.
Zach. You and Becky have a great kid in Onyx..Brings tears to my eyes of thinking back to days of working with my dad. Cherish these moments
What a wonderful day when you see your son take the controls
It always blows my mind how much larger the equipment is these days. Far cry from my Allis 190xt and Farmall Super M s
So happy to have my first combine lesson and share it with Onyx!!!!!!!
18:30 had me crying laughing… it is an absolute joy watching you two making memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you for all you guys do!
Never ran a combine but I would love to, I remember growing up my grandpa telling me to go get a tractor that hasn’t been ran in a while and go drive her around and off I’d be. I love running tractors or equipment really it’s just fun to me and I could do it all day. It’s awesome seeing a younger generation doing this. My daughter who’s fixing to be 1 will definitely learn about tractors and everything. She already loves watching her pawpaw working on his cub 682 or his engine for his truck and she definitely loves to ride on the cub 682. She gets so mad when you have to get off of it.
The smile from Onyx and the pure excitement he was showing was priceless. Glad you got it recorded Zach!
Zach, it's awesome that you were grinning ear to ear the whole time Onyx was driving!
Definitely one of the best episodes I have watched in a long while. How a simple smile can make your day.
Onyx is so composed on camera. Doesn’t even acts like he knows it’s there. Great concentration for running such an expensive machine.
That’s awesome, I remember my first time with a John Deere 95, not as operator friendly! I was about Onyx’s Adelman and had to literally stand on the clutch pedal, dad made a couple of rounds with me and told me he was going for supper 😲😀
I remember my dad saying the same thing to me after starting me on cultivating corn. Found out later he was really at the edge of the field behind some trees watching. Couldn't get in much trouble cultivating two rows at a time at probably a mile an hour. Miss him.
The look on both your faces at 12:40. There you did it. Did that with my kids too. Great times on the farm!!
This is so freakin' adorable. You can literally see the pride in Zach's eyes.
Those were some of the very best moments between a father and son that they will ever have. The smiles on both of your faces was a forever moment.
It's always good to see the next generation being taught. Great Job Onyx.
Thumbs up to your son. I grew up on a fruit farmer no combines there. I',m 70 yrs old and have yet to drive a combine. I think time is running out. It's on my bucket list.
I've never laughed so hard at one of your videos!! Good father son bonding as Onyx starts combining. I got some great laughs out of it!
The smile on your face while Onyx was driving the combine says it all on how proud you are. I also have no shame in admitting how jealous of him I am that he gets to drive all these awesome tractors. I remember when I was a little kid I always loved going to Grandpa's house because I was able to drive his riding lawn mower around his property and I thought I was the coolest kid in the neighborhood. LOL. Two thumbs up to you onyx 1 for the buck and two for all the cool tractors you get to drive and how good of a driver you are.🌱🌾🚜
As a long time owner of the square body pickup, i approve of your recent purchase!!!!!
“Use the stick to go forward.” *jams stick all the way forward * 🤣
Onyx has a great genuine smile. He needs a Necking Knob on the steering wheel of the combine. A10 point deer is an eastern count. In the western US we only count one side and I don’t believe we count the eye guards. Still a huge buck by anyone’s count!
We call them suicide knobs or spinners.
@@stevejoramo8013 we’ve always called them necking knobs because you could have one arm around your girl and steer with the other. They outlawed them years ago. I think you can still buy them for farm equipment.
Smiles all around as Onyx finished up 2021. A great video of family working together.
The next generation is getting ready to take over the reins of the farm. Good job Onyx. Good of dad to start training him at a young
age.
Onyx shovin the command pro stick forward with absolute confidence was priceless! Chip off the old block. Greetings from a fellow farmer across the pond!
Zach, you need to get one of those steering wheel knobs in the combine for Onyx! Deere sells them for their lawn tractors but they work awesome in field tractors and combines too! You guys will love it so much more turning at the ends and just for everything really; definitely will let Oynx use only one hand for the steering instead of two and the other hand for the joystick and return to cut numbers. In fact, I guarantee that you'll put one in all your equipment after you do one. You will be addicted for sure! Your welcome in advance.
Those wheels are nice in loaders and forklifts but using the palm of you hand as a wheel is the way I like and how we do on my farm. I didn't know deere did them though thanks for letting me find that out 😀
I love them, but if you get a heavy one, bumps with tractors can make the knob pull the steering wheel down, kicking out the guidance
I was one of those kids who lived in a small town but didn’t farm much. I wish I had these types of experiences. So fun to watch
I thought your fight over that old pickup on the auction was hilarious. It was even funnier when you realized you had bought it. You didn't seem too excited about the purchase right after you had been having a war with the other bidder.
It’s always a let down after you bid. Especially when you went over your max. “Did I bid too much? How am I getting it home?”
Shouldn't be any problem getting it home , question is what is it going to be used for ?
@@craigwadey2122 Its a chevy...its used to keep your tools from rusting lol

Nothing like driving or riding in a modern combine. It is great for son and father.
Another great episode. Love these vids and watching Onyx learn and grow into the farmer his dad is. Really cool he got some seat time in the combine. I have to play Farming Simulator to get a chance behind the wheel. Way to go father and son. Can't wait for the next installment.
Onyx probably don't realize how lucky he is to get to learn how to drive all that big farm equipment. Or maybe he does. I bet your a very proud father watching Onyx learn to drive all of it. I wish I could of offered it to my boys. On top of being a cool thing to get to do. It also helps them learn all kinds of different things and helps them mature a little faster in a positive way. Thank you for the video. It's cool seeing the future of our country learn the stuff that's going to feed our childrens children.
seeing onyx laugh, man that's priceless!
great tutorial, really herlped me learn how to combine harvest
I think we may need an updated equipment video after harvest is over!
Love it. When the older generation group the young together and say they’re not like in our day, they clearly haven’t seen Onyx. Teach 'em young - they don’t forget!
16:13 He has the look like "Oh crap!" Exactly the look I would have for never having touched a rig before. I like the logical questions he's asking for someone his age. Smart Kid you've got there.
Onyx learns fast. It is great to see three generations working side by side.
Just wanna say that I appreciate the relationship you show between you all and Jim.
Not sure if he's part of the family but he seems like it.
He's got a great work ethic and is hilarious on camera!
+1 for Jim!
Ps -still waiting for a Jim cam episode 🤣🤣
A father and son time like that is priceless
"New what i wanted to pay for the truck and wasn't going a dime over" "So i paid $200 more" :)
Love it! Reminds me of when I was learning to drive a manual. I forgot to take my foot off the gas while turning and took out 3 fence post and ended up nosed into the creek. All papaw said was “you got her stopped but, we better tell granny were going to miss dinner because we have to fix these fence post you just destroyed”… Little fella will remember this day for the rest of his life.
Onyx might as well enjoy life now, the weight of getting that big buck has been lifted off his shoulder, so time to farm
Your a great Dad Zach ,I wish I had had been so lucky ,it will make all the difference in the world.
I wouldn't call it putting corn on your roof of the combine I would call it feeding the deer so Onyx could get another deer LOL
Yup, if you're a fisherman it's called chummin'. Onyx knows what it's all about.
Way to go Onyx, you did great! Throttles are a little touchy and it takes a while for everyone to get use to them. The smile on both of your faces says it all, one proud dad and one proud young man... Zach thanks for explaining about the tile draining, I often wondered if putting in tile took all the water out, now I know it only takes out the excess. God Bless and Be Safe!
I listened to the podcast from April with Trevor Bales last night and Becky asked a very good question about biodegradable twine. It is actually a thing. It's made out of sisal, which is a cousin to hemp. I use it to make my 50 acres of hay every year. The problems with it are cost and quality. It has no comparison to plastic twine in consistency, so what you end up with are thicker and thinner spots in the twine which makes it miss knots frequently. It is really nice if you drop some out in the field since it will just rot away. However when you're making 500k Bales a year it just doesn't work.
