The sound issue is due to needing a resistor between the audio out and the audio signal on the NES-ON-A-CHIP. The weight difference is largely due to the lack of RF shielding.

Have you seen the Classic Game Room review of the Retron 3? It sounds like the Retron 3 might be the ultimate multi-console you're looking for -- supports NES, SNES and Genesis, allows for you to use the original controllers from any of them (including zappers), and according to CGR, it plays all three systems near-flawlessly (with only minor audio quality issues on the Genesis). Definitely seems like a superior alternative to the Retro Duo.
I tried my Starfox 2 reproduction cart on a game store's Retro Duo, and I was surprised to see that it worked. I also owned a Retro Duo for a time before I bought an SNES and NES (Mine was the blue and white version).
Thanks for this amazing review, Rinry! You're very informative about the Retro Duo, and your originality with the little comments for the goomba, for example, is just awesome! I'm from the Netherlands, so I live in a PAL region. But since this game plays most games from any region, I might be purchasing one of these consoles very soon! Thanks again for the review, and please make many more!
+Thegamerontop (Matthew Ragosta) Don't forget the Retron series either (the Retron- whatever number they're on now if you were to buy a new copy of that system; I know Retrons 1 through 5 were a while ago now).
Kurisuchan Taylor Family BASIC is a dialect of BASIC - which is a programming language, NOT an operative system - which allows users to create some basic games (not pun intended) using the included development resources (such as sprites and backgrounds), with the possibility to save them using the Famicom Data Recorder.
The age does matter, because it affects how many working consoles are still available to buy. The price of anything generally is influenced by a balance of both supply and demand. How iconic a product is only really has an influence on the demand.
Great review Rinry, I've always been looking into these. There is a system out there that plays Genesis, Snes, and Nes... would love to hear your take on that one as well.
Every time I go to the used game shop near my house I see all the NES cartridges sitting there and thing to myself "Man, it would be a trip to play NES games again, its been so long since I've held an actual NES controller..." Then I remember that I have like a bajillion roms at home on my computer and all the emulators work with my Xbox 360 controller. Nothing against collectors, but anyone watching this video can find anything they want online pretty easily :)
In case anyone is checking this video out in consideration of purchasing a Retro Duo, I will point out that it DOES work with the Super Scope. However, your TV might not as the Super Scope only works on CRT televisions. I've used mine to play Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge without issue.
I had one of those things. The NES cart connector lasted about 4 days before it broke several pins and stopped playing NES games. The place I bought it from said that their was no warranty for the connectors. I own original consoles that are region modded so I do not need it anyway and have desolder many parts from it to use in other electrical projects of mine.
The weight difference is not because of the plastic. At first i thought it was a joke but sadly not. Clone consoles condense the whole system on to one chip. Inside there is usually next to nothing just a small main board, a smaller control port board and at the rear a power board. They emulate the original hardware that's why there is compatibility issues
Here in Europe its harder to get NES in Europe (unless your in Britain) We don´t have "retro shops", we don´t have yard sales and in Flea markets you can find only clothes and if you are lucky cheap Tiger electronics clones
Emulators are nice, but can't compare to the full experience of buying the cartridges from your local game store, going home, popping them in, and playing them.
After 20 plus years my NES died and it was time to get a replacement as my first was placed to rest in a box. I saw the retro duo in a shop for 30 and the top loader for 60. I bought the retro duo and I like it a lot, even with the the audio issues. I feel I should have gotten the Top loading NES 2 instead, but it's not a major regret.
So, from what i can see: -Compatibility with both NES and SNES games, which saves a bit of money. -Compatibility with all versions of games. (PAL,NTSC,JPN.) -Those coolio buttons. -Smaller then the original NES and SNES, allowing more space, and stuff. Problems: -Incompatibility with most NES accessories, meaning games like Duck Hunt won't work. -Incompatibility with a few games. (Mostly obscure ones, however.) -The need of a converter for NES JPN games. I think it's worth it!
I just bought a Retro Nes (Couldn't afford a twin/duo) BUT comes to find out with the shipping and handling there wasn't enough on my card for games either. I'll be happy to receive any games anyone no longer wants and or has doubles of.
I once bought my dad an FC Twin for his birthday since he wanted to play some of his old games on it. We both tried it out and were quite unimpressed, so now I have it sitting in storage.
I think this system is targeted towards people like me who don't have an original NES and SNES, and don't have the money to buy one of both the original consoles, as well as the necessary equipment required to stop the consoles from blowing up the second I plug them into a 240v power outlet. As for NTSC games, that's actually ideal for me in sucky ol' Australia, because PAL region games are usually sold for more and harder to find. So buying a Retro Duo when I can.
5:22 U-four-ia!! Holy shit I loved that game when I was a kid, had no idea it was PAL only, but I guess I didn't even know what region codes were then, haha. Awesome video, ahh nostalgia :)
Yes, indeed it does, I live in the UK and brought one back from when I was in America, as long as your TV can run a 60Hz signal (I only have LCD and plasma TV's in my house these days, which can display 50Hz and 60Hz pictures).
I've still got my NES from 1987 which still works flawlessly, but i want to keep it that way so only use on special occasions and use my Retro Hamy console most times since last time my NES was out my son tried to put a sandwich in it.
It's funny when I hear people say Sega Genesis because where I'm from we call it the Sega Mega-drive. Greetings from the UK and you earned a subscribe from me :)
So great there's a woman who is as dedicated to games as most guys are lol Keep up the great work ! Your really cute 2 , and your voice is adorable. Your like an anime character brought to life. And I mean that as the highest compliment lol
I can't believe RetroBit still hasn't fixed the audio problems on the RetroDuo. The audio problems you've experienced on the NES aren't just an isolated case; EVERY RetroDuo ever produced sounds this bad, and even after mods are available to fix the distorted audio, RetroBit STILL hasn't gotten their act together and added missing components to the NES side. That's really lame.
How do you compare this system to the Retro NES edition, cause i bought one of those and they are absolutely a piece of junk. The games grip the carts so tight that it ruins your games. Is there a similar issue with this system?
Perhaps not, but I still enjoy my emulators. Being able to play pretty much ANY game. Even better when you buy a USB nes/snes controller. I still gotta get an SNES one, but my usb nes controller makes emulating nes games a LOT more fun.
@Wyrdwad I don't know the specifics for any of these retro consoles, but remember that there are certain games that cause issues for a lot of retro consoles & emulators, and it is quite likely that this one is slightly better at playing those, and by doing so has earned its reputation as a good retro console clone (historically these games have included Castlevania 3, Star ocean, Super Mario RPG and a few others)
Nice, it seems like this is best used for SNES games since they work better and looks like the official SNES controllers fit too. Those third party controllers are usually just an added source of frustration when it comes to precise controlling. I also like the S-video option, although I don't think I've ever had the chance to use that with an NES.
I've also had sound issues with my Retro Duo. It's a common problem. Also, I've heard there is a special Zapper you can get for the Retro Duo for playing NES Zapper games. While that isn't worth while for you, it's something to keep in mind. But my Game Genie seems to work fine with mine. Ah well, it's cheap Chinese technology, what can you do.
Hey Rinry, did u know that the FC twin has a separate accessory which is a zapper gun which can plug into a SNES/FC twin controller port, it might be compatible with ur retro duo, and with that, u can finally play ur zapper games on it
The NES and SNES controllers were pin compatible -- they just had different plastic shells. -- If you have a CRT that the zapper would work with, you can probably just make an adapter from extension cables that will let you plug the zapper in...
0:29 = Lava does not melt the castle because by the time Magma turns into Lava (Upon crystallization when it reaches the surface of the Earth) it isn't hot enough. I presume the castle itself is made of crysallized lava or volcanic rocks...
I got a Yobo for Christmas a few years ago and was extremely disappointed. So I ended up forking over 70 bucks for a NES 2 system. One of the best investments I have ever made!
I've read the problem with the sound is because, probably due to oversight, there are a couple of components missing from the sound section of the NES main board. A capacity and a resister soldered to the correct spots apparantly boosts the signal and solves the sound problem :) It looks like a simple mod so I'll be doing it when I buy one of these.
Good video. You just got yourself a subscriber! I have been considering buying another clone. My FC Twin burnt out not long ago. This video helped put things in perspective for me. I will stick with my NES lol
Yes, you're about the fifth person to tell me about USB SNES controllers. I honestly didn't know they existed. I'd still prefer this over hooking up my PC to a TV. Call me crazy, but I actually like having a cartridge collection.
I know this video is over a year old, but like I said on your other video I'm a new subscriber. It's so weird that Super Mario RPG didn't work on your Retro Duo because it does one mine. I've heard there are certain versions of the game that wont play, but there are some carts that do. Maybe you should try to find a version of the cart that will play on it to see how well it works. Oh well great video again even if i've seen it a year late lol.
You have no idea how broken hearted I was to see Terranigma won't work on that thing. I had no idea there was a PAL lockout on the blasted thing when I bought it and have been looking for a solution ever since.
The reason why Super mario RPG probably doesn't work could be because of the anti-piracy measure. i doubt the original lockout chip is present in the retro duo and SMRPG is actually designed to detect if there is a lockout chip in the console. usually the piracy protection is only used console side (which is why the top loader NES can play all NES games, it doesn't have a lockout chip) but if you want to play SMRPG the piracy protection works both ways .
I have a Retron 3 and it has played every game I own. It's probably on of the better clones as I would recommend it to people if they don't have the originals.
Hey Rinry, since you've used emulators in the past have you ever thought about getting one of those Pandora handhelds? Ashens did a review of it recently, it's looks like a DS, but you can run any game from the 5th generation or before via different emulators.
PAL NES games run faster than normal on the Retro Duo. It isn't really a problem but it can be awkward to hear some games run at a faster tempo, like Super Mario Brothers.
Yeah, lots of sellers on ebay are out to gouge buyers too lazy to wait for a better deal or look elsewhere. This works out pretty well because lots of buyers are loo lazy to wait for a better deal or look elsewhere. Good deals are out there to be had. Flea markets, thrift shops, etc. - even on ebay from time to time. If you find the right seller, a SNES or NES is dirt-cheap.. even free.
I'm glad it can play PAL games (I'm from the UK) so I'll definitely buy one for my old Super Nintendo cartridges. My original SNES that I bought with Birthday money from Toys R Us way back in 1994 (I think) is starting to breakdown. Video flickers after a while and the reset button is broken so this will be a nice replacement. I know all my games work with the system so its a no brainer.
The Retro Duo can play Castlevania 3 and Gauntlet. I know first hand. It still is not compatible with all of the games, but it is more compatible than most of the clone systems out there. And yeah, the sound leaves a lot to be desired...
2 things: first, I think the retro duo is for people who's old console broke, leaving them with a bunch of games they can't play. second, The retroduo portable is MUCH better. It's portable, but has hdmi output and works with NES/SNES games, although it requires an aea
@AFnord - AFAIK, the Retron 3 is newer, so it simply hasn't had an opportunity to GET a reputation yet. But CGR very specifically stated that he felt the Retron 3 was far superior to the Retro Duo, so I'm not really sure what to think. I'll have to get one and test it out for myself, perhaps. (:
I dunno if anyone has told you, but to answer your question at the beginning of the video about why Nintendo hasn't sued any of these knockoff brands is because the patent on the SNES, NES, and Genesis have run out, so it's free game. That's what I've read everywhere at least.
I have to admit, the system looks pretty sleek and fresh for a 3rd party console. I heard it doesn't play all games perfectly, some games are reported to have resolution or color rendering problems but it still looks like something interesting to get if i have spare cash.
I have one close to mine, thank God. Genesis games cost about 25 cents to 10 dollars, NES games, I haven't checked the price, Game Boy (And GBC, and GBA) games are about 5 dollars.
Its really bc people like to play on a TV or like to own physical copies of their games. Emulators are great and all, but I personally rather own a physical copy of a game and system.
You know, my TA at school said to me that back in his day (he used to play NES) that if you played video games, you were considered nerdy, even though video games today are so mainstream that even hot girls play them.
Played my Retro Duo today for the first time. So far it played Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting just fine. I'm not really looking to play imports or NES, just Super Nintendo games. Nice being nostalgic with my friends, playing these low tech games.
You mentioned the buttons being "sticky", and I've had the same problem with 2 other Nintendo rip offs. One was a NES handheld that really just made the system unplayable, and the other a regular NES remake which again just didn't feel right. I might try buying this one since you can use the orginal Super NES controlers...I still have a few I think.
Well, the s-video for NES games was interesting, but I'll just use my Wii and VC with component cable for 480p instead. Great video, and the Mega Man X2 music seals it - 5 stars!!!
I know that this video is ~10 years old now, but what about the FDS ? Can I attach the FDS ROM connector through a 72 pin adapter into the Retro Duo NES part and will it work ?
Based on what I've seen from clone consoles over the past decade, the FDS would probably not work. Even if it did, it probably lacks the hardware for audio expansion, which is an Issue even with the official NA NES model. If you really need an FDS fix and live in say, Eastern Europe, the Dendy/Pegasus consoles of Russia and Poland respectively seem to be able to run the FDS without need for an adapter. Outside of that, if you want your fix of FDS, you'll probably have to import a Famicom or AV Fami from Japan.
The Retro Duo will play SOME copies of Super Mario RPG. My friend's Retro Due was able to play it. probably because he might have an earlier copy of the game.

Yep.
3:40 The TV is only playing the pure sound of Super Mario Bros.' soundtrack without the FX.
I've never found a clone console that doesn't distort the music of Super Mario Bros.

It's probably on of the better clones as I would recommend it to people if they don't have the originals.
i think who ever is speaking for this would do great for a roll voice over for mega man movies.
Thank you very much, you saved my life.
I thought I had bought a bad NES cartridge, but I was just putting it in wrong. Wow
Cat life simulator... with big cigars, purple tuxedos and bossy desks with the picture of cat family XD
Nice being nostalgic with my friends, playing these low tech games.
they offer a light gun for the console now just letting you know you can find it on the innex website, which is the company that makes retro-duo
Great video, and the Mega Man X2 music seals it - 5 stars!!!
its supposed to play castlevania iii so it should work, maybe its your cart
yeah that's whats so great about old games, so many options on how to play them how you like :D
Just out of curiosity, what is the Yahoo touting thing at 3:48?
Outside of that, if you want your fix of FDS, you'll probably have to import a Famicom or AV Fami from Japan.
i had the fc twin. it always glitched when moved and erased my memory. after awhile, the picture wouldn't show up anymore, and we got rid of it.
The Retro Duo will play SOME copies of Super Mario RPG.
My friend's Retro Due was able to play it. probably because he might have an earlier copy of the game.
Yay it's about time I get to see a new vid. Thx!
