    Where the video cuts off, it should keep going for atleast another 30 seconds to make this all relevant.: Here's the text as it followed: "
    'I respectfully request sick leave.' - laughs
    "After hearing that, you may wonder how anyone could be so thoughtless and shortsighted. And yet every day we see people whose lives become entangled and who are bumped and bruised because they fail to plan, to think, to consult with others, to follow the teachings of the gospel. I appreciate what has been said tonight to the boys of the Aaronic Priesthood. And since they constitute a very substantial part of this vast congregation, boys whose lives are largely ahead of them, I should like to speak to them, to help save them from some of the bumps and bruises of life.
    I should like to offer what I have chosen to call “Four Bs for Boys.” They are: (1) Be Smart, (2) Be Fair, (3) Be Clean, and (4) Be True."

    I met President Hinckley in Chicago at the rededication of the Temple waiting to enter we talked for ten minutes. Later in St. Louis at Regional Conference I was chosen to be a body guard for President Hinckley during the Conference. He IS a Prophet of Jesus Christ and the most gentile man I have known.

    If I was this person, I will say right now: Please laugh at me/with me. Humor is so essential for life - with all the anxiety, depression, melancholy - in this world, you have to have humor to live. Alcohol, drugs, other dangerous substances will not help because they only dole the pain temporarily and they cause your body to crash or have a hangover, am I right? You got to have humor.

    Truthfully, I wish more leaders would let their senses of humor come out!
    Too many times we feel our leaders should be solemn, quiet men and hide their true personalities.
    I once received an anonymous letter telling me that the members of the bishopric treated our sacrament meetings like open mic night.
    I was deeply discouraged and met with the Stake President. He lovingly said, "you have a personality, never lose it."
    That's when I learned that sometimes we put undeserved expectations on our leaders.
    Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.

    this a story written by gerard hoffnung of golders green uk! it was recorded first in the 50's and goes much slower in gerards version but this one is equally as humerous. Gerard was a british comedic recitationist and as i remember in the 60's they would play it
    " THE BRICKLAYERS SAGA" ON A LOCAL CLEVELAND RADIO STATION ONLY ONCE A YEAR AT MIDNIGHT ON NEW YEARS EVE.
    its said that the poem is emblazened on a plaque at the US naval academy and is als used in an engeneering test at MIT or yale or harvard university requiring the engineering students to take provided values and describe all the weight, forces and actions upon the brcklayer, building , ground below and barrell! well used story it seems
    well done sir!

    Thanks for sharing this. I don't remember this talk as it was so long ago, but I did listen to an old song on one of my pandora stations a few days ago that relates the same story. It was done by the Dubliners, an old Irish band, and was called "The Sick Note". It has a few minor differences from the story Pres Hinckley told in his talk, and of course has rhymes and is funnier. I'm sure they both come from the same original source. One wonders if it's a true story, or at least an embellished version of a true story, enhanced over the years and re-tellings for greater humorous effect :)

    • @1ouncebird
      @1ouncebird 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed. As told here it is a funny story but Mr. Hinckley has none of the comedic timing needed. He is basically telling it as though he is just reading it. The Gerard Hoffnung version is brilliant and has exquisite timing. It is called "The Bricklayer's Lament".

      It's a teleprompter, as has been mentioned. There is a projector sitting on the ground that points upward at the panes of glass, or plastic, or whatever they are made of. The projection bounces off the glass so that the speaker can see the text, but people can still see him through the clear glass. It lets him read the talk while still looking at the audience. It's called a "heads up display."

    I remember when I was a Mormon and it seemed odd even then that stories about people suffering traumatic experiences and severe injuries always made the congregation laugh and feel good. Must be something to do with the preoccupation that Religions give to death.

      Finding humor in this type of scene is hardly unique to the religiously inclined. Lots and lots of people of all walks of life enjoyed the 3 Stooges. Why would you choose to associate this type of humor to religiosity instead of human nature?

      @@SuperLocoloco69 Is that what you really believe? Like everyone who stops going to church is a sinner? It has nothing to do with not being able to accept that Smith married other men's wives, threatened his wife with destruction in D&C 132 if she did not accept Smith polygamy? Or that there is DNA evidence to support any ancient Israelites coming to Ancient America, or the multiple different accounts of the first vision, or all the other issues? Or the issues with absolute obedience over morals, or the racism in the past and homophobia today preached in the church?
      No, for you it's just as simple as people wanting to sin?

    • @eCommKen
      @eCommKen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stelladavis7832 I grew up in the Church too. I don't buy that. The story was intended to be humor and the congregation took it that way. Not having a sense of humor doesn't make someone any more or less righteous than anyone else, and there are lots of people who find humor in the legitimate suffering of others where no humor is intended. That's not what happening here.

    • @GeoCrockerPot

      I don't think you're seeing the full drawing behind this. This is a universal truth and in some cases a doctrinal truth relating to the natural man who make foolish errors in judgement which are meant to teach them a lesson. That all choices are consequential, even if we do or say something subconsciously. As Gordon B. Hinckley said, he was setting the stage in a silly approach for the appropriate talk he's giving members and non-members who listened to it. Think of it as like 2 criminals using bricks to break through a window for whatever the reason and one of them winds up throwing it at his accomplice by mistake. He/she is hurt badly then gets the paramedics and the authorities over for help. With the whole act caught on camera, they still get into trouble with the police. Or think of it as them running away over a fence where the police were on the other side. I'm LDS and I too found it funny!
