Out of all of the bosses in Bloodborne, I found that the Defiled Chalice bosses were the most unfair when it came to difficulty. Keeper of The Old Lords was easy once you know that you can parry. Watchdog of The Old Lords can be beaten with some patience and the Saw Cleaver's vertical slash attack on the head. Amygdala on the other hand, is a relentlessly cheap fight. Most of my attempts will succeed until she has about 20-25% of her health left, then she pulls out her two arms and starts using that smash attack. Dodging them is a real pain in itself, but that attack is a one shot, which basically means that one mistake and you're dead.

My best advice would be to wait for him to slam the ground with those purple balls and run between his legs, go near his tail (stick to his left side, not too close but not too far either, make sure you have enough space to avoid his stomp) , keep your position there until he jumps. Now, once he jumps, don't freak out. move just a bit (at least 3 or 4 steps forward) to the same direction you were facing and charge your r2 and aim to your back. With a good timing, you'll be able to hit his head. When you do get to land a hit, dont get greedy and go back behind his left leg and make him jump again. Everytime he jumps, he will try to position himself in front of you. So if you dont move, he'll hit you with his head. If you roll back, he'll end up in front of you but if you roll forward, you'll end up between his legs. So the trick is to move just a bit forward and wait for his head to touch the ground, once there, you'll be able to land a hit or two. Sorry for my english; I hope this can help you.
the absolute worst about this boss is not the damage or the handicap the player has. It is the HP that the boss herself have. The fact that when you usually face the normal amygdala a visceral will deal around 20% + of the boss hp, but on this one you barely scratch 5%. If the boss was scaled hp wise properly this would have been a decent and fun fight, and not a bullshit run in circles and wait fight.

I honestly believe that this fight is the hardest in all of Bloodborne, even more difficult than Orphan of Kos. Reason why I think this is because while Kos is really fucking hard, he's not completely merciless. If you mess up an attack or dodge against Kos, you *can* still survive and heal up (at least in my case). Defiled Amygdala on the other hand? Absolutely brutal. If you fuck up 1 time, it's game over, you lost. Even with 50 vitality and 2 Clockwise Metamorphosis runes, at most I can survive 1 of Amygdala's swipe attacks, but not the other which I can't dodge because I'm stuck in a stunlock. Fuck this boss fight.

These mother f**ckers have been in the game world the whole time so the first time i fought the one in the nightmare frontier it was a bit of a disapointment. Therefore its apt that the amygdala in the defiled chalice is so brutally hard. They are literal great ones.
This boss is ass. Instead of making a boss that is aggressive and punishing ,with a difficult moveset like father gascoigne, they made a boss with moves you'll Dodge 90 percent of the time, but the one time you do get hit, goodbye, back to to the lamp. This is one of the worst bosses in bloodborne. I don't feel exhilaration and adrenaline, and ultimately fun when fighting this boss, I feel irritated at from software for making this boss, and fearful of getting oneshot by amygdala.

Those dungeons were meant to be fucking brutal, so cutting health in half was bound to be a thing :D Out of all tools they used to crank up difficulty, that HP reduction isnt the one I find the most irritating, since in my main game/regular play-throughs I never level VIT that much, so I'm almost awalys at risk or getting one-two shot. What really got in my nerves was the waves of summons by those chime bitches, insane damage by those ugly dogs and regular mobs and fighting huge bosses in narrow rooms 😠
Your strategy actually helped out A LOT. I kept going clockwise and watching its moves and went in for an attack at every chance. This is definitely a patience versus rushing fight haha. Thank you for your help man. *And might I add this is all after fighting it for what seemed 20 times and dying using so many items, Beckoning Bells, and NPC Old Hunter summon. I beat it all on my own in the end, using your strategy.
I have a solo strategy of sorts (for defiled amygdala), whatever you do DO NOT summon anyone, Old Hunters, other players, NOBODY, they’ll increase Amy’s health by OBSCENE amounts so take her on solo. NEVER try to rush her if she’s doing an attack that doesn’t result in her head being on or near the ground, if she ends up having to cool down with her head on the ground, rush her and try to attack her head, if you get stuck on an arm then swing at the arm, keep doing this until she dies, now, if she jumps, here’s a tip, remember the dialogue when you were grabbed by the lesser amygdala in the chapel to your right when facing the grand cathedral? (the one on top of the door to Yahar’gul) say “oh amygdala” with that exact timing and dodge to the left, her jump will NEVER hit you

It's important to know that while she gains new abilities in phase 3, she also loses some, most notably, her "fuck off I win" ground pound that surrounds herself while standing under her. She backpedals during that as well, making it a bad idea for phase 1 and 2, but it works in phase 3, she will only do a right stomp, left stomp, or jump.
I followed your guide for the Watchdog and Defiled Amygdala both to success! Amy wasn't as bad as I thought (got it first try after watching this). I was terrible the whole fight, but the strategy worked. Thanks!

Thanks, this guide was really helpful! The third phase was still kind of a crap shoot for me but I finally got it after a couple tries. God I hate bosses that just one shot you with every attack, its not really the type of difficulty I have come to expect from souls games.

Thanks for this guide, I thought I was at a real breaking point for my first run. Damage to the arms is so much greater than legs, I literally killed it on my first run after grinding against it all day.

Don't try and get behind or underneath it. Keep in front of it. Then when you finally reach the third phase, you will get a visceral attack on its head, somehow end up behind it and get squashed like a pancake when it leaps up into the air and you can't work out how to dodge it.

Shooting a cannon to its head on phase three during the laser attack always get me a free visceral, these two deal a lot of damage and easily finish the fight.

The one thing that I think it's funny when it comes to this boss, the defiled dungeon and Nightmare Frontier versions, is that if you do enough damage to the arms, it will try to use you as a very small drum, and its arms as very huge drumsticks. And I didn't know that it can use that laser that comes from its many eyes as a laser gun...that is more scary than the large beam it typically does.
When I beat her in campaign, I stayed under her and attacked the arms I could reach. In the dungeon, I think I’m going to have to try this technique. Been trying to get through the required dungeons for the trophy so I can go for the 3 endings and DLC, but the half health defiled dungeon has been taking awhile.
I’ve used your strategy and also a little bit of mine. After she rips out her hands the legs are very safe to hit (even tho it will take an eternety). The cheese that you can use is to just stau behind her and wait untill she jump to get 2-3 hits to the head. Thank you!

Once you enter the boss arena, lock on to her head and continuously sidestep to the left, NEVER try to rush her if she’s doing an attack that doesn’t result in her head being on or near the ground, if she ends up having to cool down with her head on the ground, rush her and try to attack her head, if you get stuck on an arm, then swing at the arm, keep doing this until she dies, now, if she jumps, here’s a tip, remember the dialogue when you were grabbed by the lesser amygdala in the chapel to the left of the grand cathedral? (the one on top of the door to Yahar’gul that brings you to the lecture building if you have a tonsil Stone) say “oh amygdala” with that exact timing and dodge to the left, her jump will NEVER hit you, afterwards you can hit her arms and head about once or twice (depending on the speed of your weapon). Pull this off correctly and you can do it without the use of any consumables. If you have high arc (around 40-50), equip the formless oedon rune (look up where to find it if you don’t know), lock on to her head upon entering the arena and spam the Executioner’s Gloves when she’s on cooldown with her head to the ground (as in use ALL of your QS bullets), i did this and took off 4000+ hp before i continued with my above strategy (i did this all on NG+2 btw), if you do this right, then combining this with the above strategy makes it so that you won’t have to waste health and vials on more bullets
today i beat him fairly for the first time 😂 usually i just do the stay behind him and bash his head when he jumps cheese but this one felt more fun and took way longer, thanks for the strategy.

Damn, so many years and it still works. This method is safer than staying behind his tail but takes longer. It took me about 25 minutes to beat him on second try. When i was trying to stay behind his tail i was dying all the time.

I have a 100% consistent strat for the last part of the fight whene she's using her two armes , juste go behind her and keep attacking het tail extremity she will be unable to attack you during her last phase , and if she jump while you're attacking her tail extremity just don't move untill she lands then go behind her again , and that's it . Ps: stay behind her left foot it more safe
Alternative strategy for phase 3: When amygdala rips her arms off, just stay behind her and attack her tail. Every time I do this she can only stomp and jump (and, to avoid those, follow the uploader's advice in this video.) It will take a few minutes, but you're pretty safe as long as you're in no trouble in getting 1 shot (30 vit + the best possible blunt protection armor is pretty much the minimum to not get 1-shot by a stomp or jump, but you'll still die if you get hit while quickstepping due to "critical hit" mechanics). You can't do this relaibly in phase 1 or 2 because she will still use other attacks which might clip you if you're not careful, so it isn't worth it. Hope this helps. This boss is still the bane of my existence, though.
You're a life saver I would do completely fine in phase 1 and 2 but then i could never get a hit in phase 3 but your tip made me finally beat it after months thank you so much 😄
Jordon Williams No problem. Amygdala in chalice dungeons is total bullshit, so don't feel bad for cheesing either btw. Also, if you stand perfectly still under her, you basically can't get hit by anything (even her stomping or jumping, you'd be amazed). If you beat cursed chalice dungeon amygdala you can beat most bosses, I feel. I found depth 5 chalice dungeon bosses to be a lot easier and more fun because you don't have to worry about the bullshit 1-shot mechanics.

Simon's bow blade trivializes every boss in the dungeons. Any boss that can one shot you and can't be beat by normal means. The bow blade destroys them.
Personal strategy: Phase 1: Dodge and keep distance until 1 of 3 slam attacks. Bait the head, hit Amygdala 2-3 times, back out, repeat. Used Tonitrus +9 Phase 2: Same strategy, but since there is arcane damage in the slams, i just went for the arms for a while. Switched to Saw Cleaver +10 because of the downward swing Phase 3: When Amygdala rips arms off, I immediately ran for the tail and carefully hit the legs, avoiding stomps. Amygdala will jump alot, but as long as you're under the tail, you're safe. You can even get a charged R2 in, but depending on your weapon, when Amygdala jumped, I actually stepped forward about 2 steps and then charge. Try it standing still first, and see where your weapon hits. But I found moving forward after the jump helps just a bit more. Weapon didn't matter, but I stayed with the saw cleaver because it's fast Took me about 10 minutes on a level 80 character. If you're having trouble, you need to be patient. Like, glacial patient. The attacks aren't that awful to dodge though. The best advice that worked for me: Keep your distance in the first 2 phases at all times. Practice surviving for a few rounds so you're not wasting blood viles. And only in phase three you move under the beast
So I have always struggled with this boss in the base game so the prospect of fighting it in a defiled dungeon was horrible. Watched this video, did it first try. You sir, deserve a medal.

Facttsss it was all about timing with those smash attacks but if you dodge them properly it gives you a window to get 1 or 2 hits off on the arms

Yep, this is the hardest boss I've fought in any From Software game, even Isshin the Sword Saint didn't take me as many tries to beat.

The thing I hate the most is the fact that if you get hit by one of her slams in her last phase, it has a lingering hitbox so you take 2 hits.

Don't try and get behind or underneath it. Keep in front of it. Then when you finally reach the third phase, you will get a visceral attack on its head, somehow end up behind it and get squashed like a pancake when it leaps up into the air and you can't work out how to dodge it.

Shooting a cannon to its head on phase three during the laser attack always get me a free visceral, these two deal a lot of damage and easily finish the fight.

The one thing that I think it's funny when it comes to this boss, the defiled dungeon and Nightmare Frontier versions, is that if you do enough damage to the arms, it will try to use you as a very small drum, and its arms as very huge drumsticks. And I didn't know that it can use that laser that comes from its many eyes as a laser gun...that is more scary than the large beam it typically does.

When I beat her in campaign, I stayed under her and attacked the arms I could reach. In the dungeon, I think I’m going to have to try this technique.
Been trying to get through the required dungeons for the trophy so I can go for the 3 endings and DLC, but the half health defiled dungeon has been taking awhile.
I’ve used your strategy and also a little bit of mine. After she rips out her hands the legs are very safe to hit (even tho it will take an eternety). The cheese that you can use is to just stau behind her and wait untill she jump to get 2-3 hits to the head. Thank you!

playido It's quite common, I do the same to acess some buttons faster and to be able to turn the camera at the same time.

Might be a bit late but here i go:
I have a solo strategy of sorts (for defiled amygdala), whatever you do DO NOT summon anyone, Old Hunters, other players, NOBODY, they’ll increase Amy’s health by OBSCENE amounts so take her on solo. Once you enter the boss arena, lock on to her head and continuously sidestep to the left, NEVER try to rush her if she’s doing an attack that doesn’t result in her head being on or near the ground, if she ends up having to cool down with her head on the ground, rush her and try to attack her head, if you get stuck on an arm, then swing at the arm, keep doing this until she dies, now, if she jumps, here’s a tip, remember the dialogue when you were grabbed by the lesser amygdala in the chapel to the left of the grand cathedral? (the one on top of the door to Yahar’gul that brings you to the lecture building if you have a tonsil Stone) say “oh amygdala” with that exact timing and dodge to the left, her jump will NEVER hit you, afterwards you can hit her arms and head about once or twice (depending on the speed of your weapon). Pull this off correctly and you can do it without the use of any consumables. If you have high arc (around 40-50), equip the formless oedon rune (look up where to find it if you don’t know), lock on to her head upon entering the arena and spam the Executioner’s Gloves when she’s on cooldown with her head to the ground (as in use ALL of your QS bullets), i did this and took off 4000+ hp before i continued with my above strategy (i did this all on NG+2 btw), if you do this right, then combining this with the above strategy makes it so that you won’t have to waste health and vials on more bullets

today i beat him fairly for the first time 😂 usually i just do the stay behind him and bash his head when he jumps cheese but this one felt more fun and took way longer, thanks for the strategy.

Damn, so many years and it still works. This method is safer than staying behind his tail but takes longer. It took me about 25 minutes to beat him on second try. When i was trying to stay behind his tail i was dying all the time.

DUDE not even joking after your video I got it first try! I kept hitting the hands once at a time, and I had no bloodviles left..but I still got it! 😅
I have a 100% consistent strat for the last part of the fight whene she's using her two armes , juste go behind her and keep attacking het tail extremity she will be unable to attack you during her last phase , and if she jump while you're attacking her tail extremity just don't move untill she lands then go behind her again , and that's it .
Ps: stay behind her left foot it more safe

Alternative strategy for phase 3: When amygdala rips her arms off, just stay behind her and attack her tail. Every time I do this she can only stomp and jump (and, to avoid those, follow the uploader's advice in this video.) It will take a few minutes, but you're pretty safe as long as you're in no trouble in getting 1 shot (30 vit + the best possible blunt protection armor is pretty much the minimum to not get 1-shot by a stomp or jump, but you'll still die if you get hit while quickstepping due to "critical hit" mechanics). You can't do this relaibly in phase 1 or 2 because she will still use other attacks which might clip you if you're not careful, so it isn't worth it. Hope this helps. This boss is still the bane of my existence, though.
You're a life saver I would do completely fine in phase 1 and 2 but then i could never get a hit in phase 3 but your tip made me finally beat it after months thank you so much 😄
Jordon Williams No problem. Amygdala in chalice dungeons is total bullshit, so don't feel bad for cheesing either btw. Also, if you stand perfectly still under her, you basically can't get hit by anything (even her stomping or jumping, you'd be amazed).
If you beat cursed chalice dungeon amygdala you can beat most bosses, I feel. I found depth 5 chalice dungeon bosses to be a lot easier and more fun because you don't have to worry about the bullshit 1-shot mechanics.
TheArnoldification Yeah its seems only that boss has given me major trouble all other bosses (even in depth 5) i beat eventually if not first try but this one i was stuck on for months I got so frustrated i gave up on the game for 5 months then came back made a new character beat the game and tried the dungeons again and finally beat the boss

Simon's bow blade trivializes every boss in the dungeons. Any boss that can one shot you and can't be beat by normal means. The bow blade destroys them.

Personal strategy:
Phase 1: Dodge and keep distance until 1 of 3 slam attacks. Bait the head, hit Amygdala 2-3 times, back out, repeat. Used Tonitrus +9
Phase 2: Same strategy, but since there is arcane damage in the slams, i just went for the arms for a while. Switched to Saw Cleaver +10 because of the downward swing
Phase 3: When Amygdala rips arms off, I immediately ran for the tail and carefully hit the legs, avoiding stomps. Amygdala will jump alot, but as long as you're under the tail, you're safe.
You can even get a charged R2 in, but depending on your weapon, when Amygdala jumped, I actually stepped forward about 2 steps and then charge. Try it standing still first, and see where your weapon hits. But I found moving forward after the jump helps just a bit more. Weapon didn't matter, but I stayed with the saw cleaver because it's fast
Took me about 10 minutes on a level 80 character. If you're having trouble, you need to be patient. Like, glacial patient. The attacks aren't that awful to dodge though.
The best advice that worked for me: Keep your distance in the first 2 phases at all times. Practice surviving for a few rounds so you're not wasting blood viles. And only in phase three you move under the beast
So I have always struggled with this boss in the base game so the prospect of fighting it in a defiled dungeon was horrible. Watched this video, did it first try.
