    I really liked this and it’s about time Tuomas had his time in the limelight.

    That is one of the three lyres found in the Royal Cemetery of Ur (excavated between 1922-1934.) It dates to 2550BC. It is in the collection of the British Museum - the other two are in the collections of the University of Pittsburgh and the Bagdad Museum. The music being played is from the “Hurrian Hymn No. 6” - an ode to the goddess Nikkal that was composed in cuneiform by the ancient Hurrians sometime around the 14th century B.C.

      And the lyre has a clay pot right by its side in the vid. The Hurrian Hymn was found inside a clay pot, ”the very first song” written down for the generations to come.

    I love your more technical analysis. I have no background in music myself and I love this kind of extra insight your commentary gives me into the song. I’m also subscribed to another reaction-channel by Chase Cameron. He does similor kind of reactions, he himself played in a band for years. He also listens with a different ear and can distinguish (is that the correct word?) the different layers in the song. You get so much more appreciation for the band and their abilities and ofcourse for Tuomas as a composer. I agree with another Nightwish-fan, he called Tuomas the Metal-Mozart of our time. Looking forward to your next reaction 😊

    Greetings from Finland & thanks for this entertaining and informative analysis of the 1st track on Nightwish's new album. I've been a fan from the beginning with the album "Angels Fall First", and for me this new album is a refreshing & brave leap into something new & probably their best one so far.
    P.S. The string instruments you can see in this music video are called "The Lyres of Ur" or "Harps of Ur". They are considered to be the world's second oldest surviving stringed instruments & are more than 4500 yrs old.

    Great reaction! I have to differ with you on one part, though. In the first part of the song , where the tribal drums are playing, you said there wasn't music yet, and that the harp was the arrival of music descending on man. Part of the point if the intro was that music has *always* been here, that it is a force of nature. Man eventually learned to give it structure, but the pure force of nature that is music was always there, in the animal cries, rain, etc. Music benefitted from man's contributions to it, but didn't start with us. It's something we took and made our own. You did hit on that a little later in the reaction, but I think it is important to appreciate just how musical the natural world is!

    Great reaction. Subbed. Will check out your previous 2 Nightwish reactions anon! At 15.04 mins into your video you mentioned you liked the images of vast nothingness. Well at the forefront of that image is the piece of jar like pottery that contained "Hurrian Hymn No. 6" considered the world's earliest melody! Nightwish don't do anything by chance. Every note, lyric and imagery has it's own purpose. That's the genius of Tuomas!

    I think you will love Ayreon. It’s symphonic/operatic metal. One guy, Arjen Anthony Lucassen, composes everything and then invites, very well known, rock and metal musicians to play a part on the album. Floor Jansen and Marko Hietala also participated.
    I suggest you start with ‘Into the electric castle’ or the live concert of that album ‘The electric castle live and other tales’

  • @shuriken4852
    @shuriken4852 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    In my opinion you should also comment on Floor's vocal, as on this album I feel like Tuomas is really using her as another instrument.

    • @stubbornostinmusic2540
      @stubbornostinmusic2540  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Absolutely I could! Although its not my area of expertise and I won't have much to offer in terms of explaining what she is doing or why. I think there are tons of great vocal coaches with channels who can talk about her better than I can. But that being said I can definitely talk more about how her vocals fit as an instrument rather than techniques she is using since i can't sing but have written vocal melodies for songs :)
      Thank you for the input!

    • @oolillemyoo4099
      @oolillemyoo4099 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just wanted to chime in and say that you have my vote for including Floor’s voice as an instrument :) I think that would be the optimal way of doing it - totally excluding it would be a shame I think, because Tuomas really *does* use her voice like another instrument at his disposal.

  • @SynphamyMusic
    @SynphamyMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Totally subscribing, i'm all for this kind of breakdown of the more production/compositional aspects of Nightwish. From a production standpoint fitting a full orchestra with the distorted guitars, i get that they thin out the guitar to make room for the other string instruments... What are your thoughts on how they handle the bass? Because something i've noticed (and i could very well be wrong) is that sometimes it seems like they merge the bass and the guitar a little bit more than what you'd normally hear. Almost like they use distortion on the bass so it can serve two functions and bring out the guitars lower frequencies slightly? I can imagine it's no easy task for production, to have so many instruments & frequency ranges all dancing around each other like in your typical Nightwish track.

    • @stubbornostinmusic2540
      @stubbornostinmusic2540  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the sub! :) And that's exactly what you're hearing actually its common in metal, especially in symphonic metal, to keep the low end of the bass clean and highly compressed to keep a consistent low end but distortion is added to the high end of the bass to not only help it blend better with the guitars and make it feel like 1 big instrument but also to get more of the beef and distortion you lose from the guitars in heavy orchestral mixes. I do this quite a bit on my personal stuff and this was done quite a bit on the album "Once" :)

    It's not 'tribal drums'. It's a suggestion of drums coming from a tribal 'society'. And music doesn't desend upon man but comes from within us. Except maybe when your hit by a falling speaker, providing there's music coming out of it when it hits you. But you're Canadian, so I'll give you the advantage of the doubt.

      @@JimmyRJump Keep it, Pretty sure I'll live :) You're taking what I said WAY too literally. When I say tribal drums I mean the overall feel, tempo, tone of the piece that was written was very tribal.. Unless it sounded kinda Jazzy to you? ;) Doesn't matter if they used a big expensive studio in London to record the percussion or got Kai out in the woods with animal skin stretched over a hollowed out tree stump. Its about context. So if by suggestion you mean giving that feel and experience regardless of what was used to record it.. Then yes, they have used pots and pans and other random metal objects to create sounds all over Endless Forms, but I can pretty much promise if Tuomas wanted that authentic sound in there, they weren't using expensive trailer style drums to do it. To me its not a suggestion if that's clearly the feel and vibe that was put in front of me. I don't need it recorded out in the wild performed around a large fire for it to be called tribal.
