THE COLOMBIA YOU DON’T HEAR ABOUT! (GETSEMANI & PALENQUE)

  • In this Colombia Travel Vlog we are taking you to Getsemani, a very colorful and historic neighborhood in Cartagena, Colombia as well as on a day trip to San Basilio de Palenque, the first free town in the Americas for Africans. During the colonial period in Cartagena, Getsemani was where the displaced indigenous and enslaved Africans were placed. San Basilio de Palenque, shortened Palenque, is a town where many Africans fled Cartagena in search of their freedom which was granted to them in 1713. While Cartagena receives many tourists throughout the year not many take the time to learn about the real history here so we hope this travel video teaches you a bit about what really happened so when you travel to Cartagena you can better understand Getsemani and Palenque, Colombia.

    What you were saying about the importance of community is so true! I read a comment under another video on Mexico where this guy said his neighbour's livelihood was selling bread and when she got sick - he and his wife sold the bread for her for a week and wouldn't take any pay for it. Then later, when he was renovating his kitchen she came over with her family and helped him do it. Things like that don't happen in Australia or the US. It seems shallow in other places compared to these Latin American countries.

    • @TheCountryCollectors
      @TheCountryCollectors  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wow that’s so beautiful. I don’t know what changed and why we got so far away from that. I think a push for individualism. It’s sad. Community and close relationships are so important for living a joyous life.

    I lived in Cartagena 2022 to 2023 for six months. This is one of the best videos that I have seen on TH-cam regarding Cartagena! By the way, the streets are closed off when they play baseball in Getsemani. They have other events that required the street to be sectioned off as well. Did you all make it to Bocagrande? Also, it so true! Getsemani is so loud. It is full of music from Thursday to Saturday night. I don't think I slept a wink! LOL!

    GREAT video…3 years ago we stayed in Getsamaní at a beautiful B&B. We loved it! Not as many people out in the square at night but it was definitely a happening place. I LOVED all the murals, art, food, and colorful life that took place there. I bought a lovely painting from a shop with an image of two palenqueros; it hangs on our wall as we speak. Also visited Palenque; was definitely something we will always remember. Thanks for all you are sharing from the country of my heart. I LOVE Colombia. I learned the same about sloths in Costa Rica. I was told they eat coca leaves which you know makes something isn’t allowed in many parts of the world. When I was told that I was like no wonder they move slow lol. And that is very interesting to know that the languages are different from Cartagena to Palenque. And gentrification can really drain the locals.

    What a wonderful, real, neighborhood! Colorful and full of life! Gentrification stinks, in general. I had read about how many kids disappeared from schools in the Cancun area, the parents were priced out of their neighborhoods. Some type of legislation needs to be found so that these neighborhoods and towns can allow the locals to live there. "They paved paradise and put in a parking lot". Sad. Great point, Heidi, about living behind a fence and not mingling with neighbors, not everywhere in the U.S. but in way too much of it.

    It seems like you have really been highlighting gentrification lately. What an important topic to explore. like you said there are 2 sides. I can't believe apartments are up to 5,000,000 USD! Crazy!!!!

    I already wanted to re-visit Cartagena (spend 1/2 day here) but now can’t wait to check out this spot. Did you get to see what you get for $1M - $5M here. The prices are definitely too crazy but can’t blame the family who can sell to these crazy buyers at these loco prices…. happy for them. Also, I enjoy the town square with the family vibe not so much with a party scene…. enjoy the history lesson as well. Great video! Gracias.

      Hey Mark! We didn’t get to go inside but they are large colonial homes. Yes very crazy prices but we understand it too! It’s sad though because he says many get the money and blow it in a few years and end up worse off…

      @@TheCountryCollectors Kinda like most lottery winners here in USA. Sad, really sad…. now they blow the money away; they can’t afford to live in Getsemani anymore.
