what I like about your channel is that you guys, as opposed to others, seem to really delve into dany's story and the actual game going on in mereen, which appears to be lost on others. like the poisoning, the green grace, and now who the F lived in the pyramid before Dany...nobody's talking about this and im here for it
Yes, but what was the existing government prior to Dany's invasion? All we know is that they didn't have a king and they were ruled by The Great Masters. And if they ruled together, they wouldn't have wanted one of them to have this extra giant pyramid and throne, as that would imply that whoever sits in this throne has more power than the others. So this must have been a religious leader's throne, not a political leader's. So excellent analysis from Dave!
Yeah I agree with your theory that either the green grace or anyone who is connected to her like her close family or friends own the pyramid and Dany taking over the place makes sense as an unseen detail for the story. My guess is that the green grace being comfortable eating food with Dany without much complaint after she took over is a show of it like how the golden company took that castle and the family was basically held hostage in thier own home
Now I have to re-read Dany’s Meereen chapters again. They are some really shady fs in that city and the Green Grace is definitely The Harpy so it makes sense that The Great Pyramid would be her HQ, which we know she wants back. Thanks for the Podcast Dave ❤️ it.
Makes a lot of sense to me. Kudos! I can imagine when the Green Grace is revealed to be the Harpy, someone will ask Dany, “did you ever wonder whose house you were in?” Usually the previous inhabitants of a large castle (or in this case, pyramid) are the biggest competitors for the new castle inhabitants.
It never ceases to amaze me how many intricate layers George has laid out, not mention the ability of theorists like yourselves to delve beneath the surface and come up with gems like these...Kudos! This was so well hidden in plain sight. I'm sold and would love to see a fleshed out video on this. Thanks
You guys always think ab stuff I never even think of as significant. Respect for noticing the little thing (: It makes sense for it to be the green grace's pyramid, she is supposedly Dany's ally so it would not cross Dany's mind for the person she kicked out to be mad.
It will be tyrions job to play the game, because no one is really helping Dany with it. Selmy is trying but it's not in his nature... God can't wait for winds
I like it. I think you are right. The question is why would GRRM keep this important fact from the reader? It would make for a nice reveal. In that, there maybe a point where the Green Grace will let Dani know she is the Harpy and part of that scene will be her telling Dani of all the pain she has caused personally. This telling may include the painful exit from her house. The only problem I see, is GRRM never adds any text about the search for the leader of Meereen. It could be writer error but I don't think so. Good catch!
Bc it would all but confirm that GG is the Harpy. We're not supposed to have enough evidence yet to do more than theorize for now. If we're told it's her pyramid the entire mystery around the Harpys Sons is ruined. It also means when it is revealed it could trigger a series of events ending with Dany marching on Westeros and the GG being eaten by Drogon...if we're lucky lol
It makes complete sense that the place was a theocracy and that the Green Grace was in a ruling position. It is a valid point that no one ever so much as brings up who lived there before she showed up, and I think it's obvious that the Green Grace is the Harpy, so this makes the most logical sense. (Edited because I initially used talk-to-text)
@@Richard_Nickerson yes valaria is like the Roman republic. I meant the form of government. Egypt was a monarchy or an imperial possion . The Tyrion varys little man cast a giant shadow or the seed is strong is the best example I can give regardless of show or book in how many meanings it has reading at face value or deeper in one sentence. Ok time to watch.
I like this new podcast format! I think it works better than your livestreams, which, no offense, can tend to be all over the place and off topic (but you do you! no hate!) I've absolutely loved all of your guys' theory videos which have a totally different perspective from the typical ASOIF youtube community and it makes rereading the books so much more interesting. Thank you both for what you do here!!
It's been at least a year and a half since I read Dance but I 100% agree with you Dave. In most indigenous cultures the leader has a dwelling that is larger than everyone else's or the village has gathering/meeting place that is larger than the residential dwellings. I think the great pyramid was the gathering place for the leaders of the great families. They don't have a King in Meereen which is what Hizdahr was after. But the Green Grace is set up like a pope figure. She's seen as holy and speaks for the gods. If she's speaking for the harpy she pretty much is the harpy. She presents herself as someone who speaks to and bargains with the great families. This couldn't be something that just happened. If this was her position before Dany took over then she was def the one sitting on that harpy throne and leading their meetings. I think she backed Hizdahr becoming king because it doesn't threaten her position. Popes are above kings. And with the influence she has over the other families she could always remove him later. Yeah she can get bbqed and eaten.
I really like this theory and it makes sense in terms of the power dynamics in Meereen, but I would assume that the Green Grace lives at the Temple of the Graces together with all the other graces. The Kindly Man lives at the House of Black and White which is probably the closest comparison we have in the story. I think it could be that the Great Pyramid was simply empty before Dany's arrival. It's like if Westeros returned to having independent Kingdoms, the Red Keep would probably be empty, even though there would probably continue to be people living in King's Landing. You‘re definitely right about George hiding things by not mentioning them.
I agree the Green Grace is the Harpy and it is her pyramid Dany is staying in. If the Green Grace were eaten by a dragon it would remove an interesting dilemma for Dany around dispensing justice though...do you both still think Dany is the Mummers Dragon though? I think Tyrion is....not only is he in a Mummers show, he has the odd coloured eyes, a trait that some of the Targs have in Fire and Blood.
A little off topic but did y’all see the Nikolaj Coster-Waldau movie Shot Caller? Dave reminded me when he used the euphemism ‘shot caller’ in the podcast lol
Whilst I think its a likely explanation, couldn't it also just be a public meeting place for whatever nobles or council ruled the city before Dany got there? Hosting big banquets, meetings with envoys, public debates ect might need that sort of space.
I think I assumed it was the harpy’s place at the time. To me it seems overt that it is. But that doesn’t really lessen the mystery! And ya, you’re right, it’s the brilliance of Martin to add these details that require keen readers to puzzle out, without ever even mentioning that it’s something that should be thought about!

seems perfectly reasonable. whose else could it be? unless some public building like a city hall or something, i can't think of an alternative off the top of my head.

Maybe the Great Pyramid was the place of residence of whoever was in charge of Meerreen at the time. Sort of how the US president has the White House. I forget if there are details that go against this but maybe the Great families had a designated person(s) elected as the spokesperson or a rotation was set up among the elite families. Also the size of it makes me think that it has to be built as a public works project where all the great families pitched in for the expense. A single family would have to be so wealthy (and therefore influential) that I can’t see a POV never even thinking about that family at least one time. The fact that the people of the city were not confused by court being held in the pyramid also points to that it was the place of governance before Dany. The Green Grace could have been the long-standing “advisor” to those that were publicly in charge of the city or maybe the elite families looked to her to choose their ruler(s). Regardless it’s her in power.
I was thinking the same before you said it. The GG is their religious leder and its her HQ. Who else should sit on the throne as their religious leader. She is over the wise masters. Like a Pyramid. GG is top then comes the wise masters, the other people of the city and the bottom are the slaves. I think Dany didn't know who is the owner.
No judgement dave i have had a few disturbing thoughts read this series. Oh i remember dany used a litter carried by servants to move up and down the green grace must have done the same thing.
I have been going back through you guys videos. I miss you guys content. Not sure if I commented on your Harpy video. But one thing that I have long thought is that the temple of the Grace's. That stand out all night until they are chosen by a man to bed them. I have long thought that these women are there there drawing in the life force of those that bed them like Mel does to stanis to make Shadow babies. This is why the men that get attacked by the Sons of the Harpy seem to be like Shadows in the night! It's because they are, or at least some might have been! Unlikely that Mel only is capable of this. I am pretty sure that Danny even refers to them as being like shadows in the night. It also would make sense that they would be sons, like Mel refers to shadow child as a son. Crasters male children get turned into White Shadows and are referred to as the sons of Craster! Thoughts anyone?
I like that idea, I think if the pyramid belonged to anybody it was most likely the Harpy/Green Grace. Maybe we don't know whose pyramid it is because Dany doesn't know whose pyramid it is. We get most of our info from her perspective. What if it was empty when she got there, and perhaps people in Mereen were told not to tell her who lived there previously. I also thought it was possible that the pyramid has political significance to Mereen, but it doesn't really belong to anybody. Kind of like the President of the United States lives in the White House during their term of office, but the building belongs to the government and the people. This could explain it's obvious significance with the Harpy imagery, but also explain why none of the families appears to be displaced.
Makes sense. The step pyramid sound a little more like a south or central American one than an Egyptian one the step ones are older but Masonic tradition is based on ancient architecture or engineering legend has it it was some sort of union dating back to then .
I am listening to this again and thinking of Dany in Meereeeennneeee reminds me of a kid just standing on an ant hill. And it's a smart kid too, so you might be wondering, 'what the hell is wrong with this kid?' And the kid says, "Oh no worries. Im stronger than them. I have lizards with me. The ants will bow or they will leave or they will die screaming." Or whatever ultra hype thing Dany would say. She does eventually leave by way of lizard and im very interested to see how this all plays out for her when she's taken by Khal Pono. But Dany didn't want to get off the Green Grace's ant bed. She's even shaking the Ant Queen's hand and thanking her for all her help in subduing all the other ants. Smh.
In short, are you saying the Green Grace is not the Green Grace? In that, this person is a made up character. Dani has been tricked into believing that she is some kind of priest but she is really the Queen of Meereen. At some point she plans the reveal this to Dani while plunging a knife into Dani's heart. Oh I like this. Great Job!
what I like about your channel is that you guys, as opposed to others, seem to really delve into dany's story and the actual game going on in mereen, which appears to be lost on others. like the poisoning, the green grace, and now who the F lived in the pyramid before Dany...nobody's talking about this and im here for it
Dany managed to diss the Harpy without even knowing it? That is awesome.
I just assumed it was the existing government seat of power. Excellent thoughts, OotGH.
I thought that as well when I read those chapters.
Yes, but what was the existing government prior to Dany's invasion? All we know is that they didn't have a king and they were ruled by The Great Masters.
The step pyramid sound a little more like a south or central American one than an Egyptian one the step ones are older but Masonic tradition is based on ancient architecture or engineering legend has it it was some sort of union dating back to then .

in Gossip girl voice 😂
You made me laugh so hard with the ..she does a pretty good job considering she’s never been around anyone smart...
Great Job!
We’re almost positive that she’s the harpy
