- This documentary is not an official or authorized documentary of Van Halen.
In 1984, Van Halen experienced great success with their album “Diver Down” and a highly successful tour. However, the band members were behind the scenes facing internal tensions and conflicts. The album included cover songs due to time constraints. During this time, Eddie Van Halen connected with Frank Zappa and had a jam session at Zappa’s studio. Eddie also produced a song for Dweezil Zappa. Inspired by their experiences, Eddie and his engineer, Donn Landee, decided to build their own home studio called 5150. The band’s relationships continued to deteriorate, leading to their separation after the Diver Down tour.

Actually Jas Obrecht talking in a recent interview on a podcast mentioned that in 1991 there was a NEW feature installed into 5150 which is missing from these 1980s plan drawings…and can you guess what it was ? …wait for it - a URINAL …lol…Inside the studio. Presumably before that if they had to ‘go’ the band members, producer or engineer had to either run for the house or run for the bushes…..lol
@@walterevans2118 Haha...I think he put a lot of upgrades in since the 80's plans.
Hot damn! Thank you for putting this back out!
I was wonder(still am) what happened?
At least it's back out now though.
The Diamond Dave era will always be my all-time favorite band. That era has the most rabid and loyal following of any band. It's too bad that Ed, and now Alex and Wolf, have been total pricks to their loyal fans. It pisses me off so bad. I know Alex has to be sitting on some never seen before footage of them in their prime. Say what you want about KISS and Gene Simmons, but at least they care about their fans who put them in fat city addresses. KISS has so many pro-shot videos of them in their prime and we have NONE! 😡
Ty. Amazing facts. So sad they broke up, but Van Hagar was great.
In my opinion, Van Halen’s first album and fair ⚠️ warning were there masterpieces. Serious serious rock ‘n’ roll
I agree 100%.
I agree. The first self titled album and 'Fair Warning' were Van Halen at their best. 'Fair Warning' is my favorite one, followed closely by their self titled debut.
Women and Children First is arguably just as strong
So glad this is up even if can’t be in the original form. Thank you for all the hard work and dedication. Really don’t understand WB or Alex on this issue, but so be it. Sounds like you went so out of your way to prevent them taking it down and then tried so hard to get it back up. You are a true VH fan and we are with you even if the powers that be are not. Rock on!! 🎶🎸🤘
Thanks man! Comments like yours really push me forward. I don't get it either, but just trying to make the best of the situation. Thanks for your patience. Can't wait to get the other episodes out. 🍻🤘(Even though some fans will probably hate me after I drop it.)
@@TheTapesArchive I wouldn’t worry about VH fans hating you. Your love of the band shines through and anyway we VH fans have seen the bad side of the band and crazy drama enough over the years that very little is probably going to be shocking or upsetting at this point!
@@edwardskol1812 Thanks for that! When doing the doc I had to wear two hats, fan and documentation, and sometimes they conficlcted. For the most part I went with what I found to be true. And some of that truth rabid fans will not like. But I agree, I just won't read the comments too much. :)
It isn't Warner Brothers, it is Alex. Warner Brother has pleanty of other properties that they make no effort to copywright police. Alex (and during his life, RIP, Eddie) is insane and anal about poeple using van halens music or image. To the point that i'm' sure it hurts the band.
Clearly , record companies and certain band members don’t fucking care about the fans. Especially if they ain’t making money… more than what they already .
Excellent FACTUAL information .
The Zappa connection, is never pointed out, enough.
As important as it was & still is, in Rock & Rolls long, long history .
Zappa has had, IMO, a big influence over other elements in the music biz than just the music.
Ace Frehley built a studio in his Connecticut mansion in the late ‘70s. The cost was outrageous. I can only imagine how much this one had cost!
It was cheaper . Much of the equipment was really old and was replaced with newer equipment elsewhere . It's believed much was from Sunset Studios .
:00 I understand that portions were removed per Alex Van Halen's/Warner's request. Copyright law is there to protect publishing and songwriter royalties, of course. HOWEVER, in a case like this, this wonderful project helps prolong the LEGACY of the band, regardless of the law. The law itself will NOT help bring in new monies ( just ask the Zappa and Nelson families after their famous family members passed away and were almost forgotten about ).
The band will only encounter massive problems without licensing their music for future generations.
This is an outstanding set of videos. Nicely done! But Warners/Alex ( along with more than a few record company executives ) need to rethink their " strategies. "
Thanks! And of course I agree. But as others have said and I agree, it's their right to do with their IP even if we disagree. But in the long run it will be their loss.
I understand protecting intellectual property, but so many classic bands overlook how videos like this bring new generations to their music. The labels and artists have this mindset that no one will ever again pay for music and they're hell bent on making that true by keeping the music locked away. It sad and short-sighted. You've done a great job in spite of them.
I'd have to defend them because they were ripped off by their first record contract with Warner Bros . Warner really screwed them like they screwed others like Badfinger , INXS and TLC even .
Imagine living next to Eddie and getting to hear him and Alex play then complaining about it
Complaining that they stopped. I'd call the cops for them stopping.
I just got to say I've watered years for someone to make something like this I'm 31 years old been a guitar player for 20 years and van Halen's been one of my biggest influences I love these videos man everything you've done with it the music in the pictures the videos the facts just when I thought I'd seen everything van Halen someone has a little bit more. Keep it up man
For sure!
A home studio was everybody's unattainable dream in the sky back then. Now everybody down the block has one.
Decades ago, when I heard about how Intruder came to be, my drummer and I freaked. Our first album, we did a video for the "single" we were pushing. We shot the video, very home made looking like the Pretty Woman one, and once it was edited, we found we needed more music so we came up with an instrumental rampage tacked on the end instead of the beginning. I remember thinking: "What are the odds this happened to us and VH?"
I came here from TGP. I really enjoyed this part, and will watch the rest soon. I love that you included Holdsworth and Zappa in this. Terry
Ah thanks for getting this back .....Even if it doesn't have VH on the soundtrack its still got good stuff on VH History. That's the main thing.👍
I figured it was better than just sitting on my hard drive. But it has been a bitter pill editing out all those good jams.
@@TheTapesArchive On the stuff about Ed going round to Frank’s house I heard an interesting story…Someone said Vai mentioned that Ed was playing a guitar round there and the nut was causing sustain problems. So Ed promptly got a screw driver and jammed it under the nut to raise things to improve sustain. Vai says he remembered Eddie playing round there with this screw driver sticking out of the fretboard…lol…However makeshift it was with Ed if it worked it WORKED…lol
@@TheTapesArchive Ah yes. Indeed. Some of them sounded like from Rare VH Demos or out takes & I was straining to listen to them in the background.
Great job. I want to see the rest of the episodes.
Working on them. 🤘
@@TheTapesArchive When the new episodes debut on You Tube will they have a live stream people can comment on ? ...That will be fun...Love folks talking about VH history 😺👍
@@walterevans2118 Maybe, not sure..I did this with Ep1 and 2 the first time through. But I kind of figured most folks have already seen this episode so I bailed from the idea.
This is better than great!!! Keep up the great work!!!
I would love to be the neighbor that can hear van halen playin in 5150, how could someone complain lol
Haha no kidding, I'd grab a recorder.
@@TheTapesArchive yes sir!!!
In a classic rock magazine , it's noted Edward had to buy the neighbors house because he played so loud at night . His former neighbor was Lindsay Wagner . Better known as the Bionic Woman .
@@user-rt9zq8rs9k could be wrong, but I think it’s more that her ears are bionic than his playing was loud.
Awesome documentary so glad i got the notification..Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! Can't wait to get the other episodes out. 🍻🤘
The record labels/older bands NEED to figure out that THEY are hurting themselves and their legacy. They dont get it, eventually they will be forgotten if people cant do things like this or post covers. Absolutely unacceptable. The genie is out of the bottle, and it has been out for 20 years!
I agree, but trust me they don't care or get it. When streaming first came along they tried to fight it instead of embracing it etc. Excecs in almost all big companies are so out of touch. They live in diff worlds than we do. And so do some big "rock stars".
@@TheTapesArchive that’s why I love Rick Beato ranting about it. Don Henley said he employed a team of 30 people that report music on YT that isn’t licensed. Unreal.
The time you’ve put into these vids is unreal, I love this band and because of Ed I play guitar. Seeing this info is fantastic. Illegitimi non carborundum!
People can't even play their own guitar of some songs on youtube because of licensing..It's ridiculous and will hurt those bands in the long run..
@@daveyboy8907 100%, it kills the conversation totally. Kate Bush has had a massive surge recently because of stranger things, I wonder if the label pulled all those covers down, if so they shot themselves in the foot.
My friend George Fludas has the best Bonham tribute page on IG, he was getting absolutely hammered with strikes a while back. George is a walking encyclopedia of Bonham knowledge, if he had given up it wouldve been a huge loss. Bonhamology is his YT page, his knowledge of what Bonham did on songs in 69 compared to 76 is astounding.
Its sad man, Labels have to get it together
@@portal432 I love me a good Beato rant. He's a guy that gets it and loves music for the music. I wish I could have got his attention.

Glad to see this back up Alan. In my comment when you first published it I said I hoped the VH camp would get in touch and commission you to make more. I really don't understand why AVH has not reacted in the same way as DLR; as Dave said in one of his solo songs 'there ain't much difference between a pat on the back, and a kick in the pants'. Especially as you have made it very clear that you don't want to profit from it. And let's not ignore the irony that you have been prevented from using someone else's music in your production by a band that in the early days were effectively a cover band playing other people's songs and making money from it. Anyway, I am a massive VH fan, and I can only say once again that I love it that you are doing this - I hope the hassle you have had to endure doesn't stop you from doing more. We, the fans, are grateful.
Right on man! Well said. Great point with the covers. Or how about how WB totally gave VH a cruddy contract at first. BUT now they are trying to protect them? It's laughable.
Roth totally gets it. Once he found out I was literally just a fan, he loved it.
@@TheTapesArchive Good to know. Chalk one up for Dave. He usually gets the bulk of any criticism when it comes to the band. There's always another side to every story. Great work! 👏👏👏
@@pb12661 Unfortunately Roth does not come out the best in upcoming episodes. But I have to tell it like it is.
@@TheTapesArchiveDave's ego was his undoing .

No powers to be helping. Al and WB still don't want it up. I took out all the VH music so they couldn't say much about it. And when I do use it, it should fall under Fair Use.
Awesome!!!! Thanks again and excited for seeing all the episodes posted soon!
This was excellent. I'm sure it was a PITA, but the clips you added, from the Anchor Guy, and the zoom meeting were hilarious.
Right on! I originally had a very snarky and snide comment for the top brass at WB part with the Anchorman clip but decided to take it out since I know they will watch it. Haha
Watching the new cut…there’s nothing wrong here. I mean I’d love the unedited version, but this works just fine!!! It’s still stellar, Al!
Thank you! You will notice it more in Ep3, but I think it works better than nothing.
@@TheTapesArchive btw I do have one question, was the AI voice of DLR removed? Or am I just crazy?

@@TheTapesArchive Alex Van Halen is a reprobate and POS for doing this. A video like this is going to impact his $75M fortune in exactly what way? Go to hell AVH too bad you are not as good a guy as Edward......RIP
15 seconds in, and Dave's chopping a line. Classic.

Great job and thanks for all the efforts to get out what you could! Love this first episode! Great shot of a TRS-80 Model IV at the 13:38 mark! Makes me wonder what they used the computer for, probably not controlling anything at that point, but maybe database, documenting of systems, or such.
It was said Donn used the TRS-80 for keeping track of the instruments Ed played individually for about 2 albums of songs . There's a bunch of tapes of Ed playing each instrument . Then the computer died . They had some specialist try and fix the hard drive but couldn't .
@@akfreed6949 Very cool, that's what I'd think they'd use it for, thanks much for that! Those early MFM drives can be a pain to pull data off, not unusual for them to have physical platter damage when they died.

Diver Down is an incredible album! Who cares if there are cover tracks on it? Van Halen made those tracks their own in a huge way. And the guitar solo on Dancing In The Streets is one of Eddie's greatest.
Dude, this is amazing. So informative and entertaining. Do 200 hours on the first four albums. Lol.
Well, they’ll rock no matter what! 🎉
Man, you have a really good voice for narrations. That's sort of rare on YT, honestly. Obviously, the content is interesting or I wouldn't be here but the narrations are solid and remind me of VH1 Behind the Music (when it was good).
Any man that has Lord of Doom as his avatar is all right in my books. 🤘TBH I just started to do the VO cuz I had no money to pay a pro. It's the part of the process I struggle with because I'm not the most articulate person. lol..So thanks for the encouragement.
I love this !!!❤❤❤❤
I get it if a band puts a new album out and some jerk sticks it up here immediately. That's tens of thousands (or more) unsold/streamed copies, directly depriving the band of income. But, something like this that is a homage to a band is very different. It increases/maintains awareness of the band, leading to continued sales/streams. Very short-sighted of Alex.
Thanks for your commitment to the cause! So glad this is back up. You're doing a huge service for all us VH fans!
This was interesting and unique.
This is a great video! I wanted to point out that @8 :43 that is footage of pre-Mr. Bungle Mike Patton and Trevor Dunn's band Gemini. 🤘
Thank you! I'm glad someone else caught that. I'm a huge Bungle fan and put that in there as a tip of the hat to my fellow Bungle peeps. Love to do a doc on them some day.
BTW, regarding use of keyboards, there's a non-album remix of "Secrets" off Diver Down that has synth added to it. (Only available on the 45 RPM.) I don't think I can post TH-cam links in comments, but search "Van Halen secrets remix" and it should be at the top.
Now you tell me..Haha..Dang it, I would have added that in the doc. I had no idea about this. Crazy how you never know everything about Van Halen no matter how much you research it. Thanks for the heads up! 🍻

@@MarkMcArthur-ze3vy Yeah, it's a cool version. It also has some extra background vocals in the first verse.
@@inasimplerhyme Would you be interested in making me a couple of tracks that sound like VH?
Great documentary! I am one of the few that feels musicians did get the proverbial wrench in the gears when file sharing and Napster came about. I believe its the reason there are far fewer albums made today. Artist need to be contantly on tour to make the lions share of their money. It's better to be on tour playing the same stuff for ticket sales, than to be making new music to be practically given away. Artust do need to write and record songs fans will want to hear, but certainly there is a lack of good music presently because I feel bands/artists aren't putting out the amount of albums they did in the 80's and 90's.
6:42 Gene Simmons and Diana Ross were a thing?
Great doc man
Zappa, EVH and Vai hanging out is awesome. Dweezil had an interaeting childhood. He does his dad justice in concert. Cheers.
Simmons would stick his tongue and his worn-out weiner into a farm animal then a knothole in the fence around it. 😂

Good shout on that..I just checked it out. 🍻
What a great time to be alive!
This video was done nice. Reminds me a lot like the "Dog Town and Z boys" doc.
Lol.. Never heard of a UREI console. But I had an original M56 16tk.. The thing was a tank and interestinly it was also a big piece of Pete Townsend's studio on his river barge!
The outboard gear is OK.. Though it's missing a Lexicon 224 or 224X reverb. I assume this was pre AMX so that explains thst. But I'm struck by how similar this was to a 1980 esk 24tk studio I built in our loft in down town Boston. Biggest difference being a Sony console and 24tk. Even had a matched pair of rare U48s that ended up being sold to Beatle Paul.
Great Video, the studio list is awesome..

@@walterevans2118 Even if you read every book etc, there is always seems to be one more piece of info you don't know about. I can almost guarantee I have gotten something wrong no matter how much checking I do. The next episode some fans will probably hate me.
Dude this is AWESOME! I NEED EPISODES 2, 3, 4, 5 NOW!!! 😂
Ep2 is already up
@@TheTapesArchive Did it skip from 1 to 3 man? Looks like Ep3 is out (which is great).
@@TheTapesArchive did episode 2 get taken down? I can't find it.
@@68fmj51 It's on David Lee Roth's channel. th-cam.com/video/13JrKjGBnHA/w-d-xo.html
0:43 this is technically wrong. The first use of keyboards on a Van Halen album was actually Van Halen I, which was a piano key sweep in the beginning of Runnin' with the Devil. While you may be using the term "keyboards" to refer to synthesized music only, its important to point out that a piano keyboard is in fact a keyboard instrument.
I can't find episode 2? Is there an episode two? This is a great documentary
Right on! It's on David Lee Roth's channel. th-cam.com/video/13JrKjGBnHA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_XTktypmlOlcPGv-

C’mon Al and Warner, gimme a break
Hell yeah this is the best
You seem like a cool dude. Do you by chance play guitar?
Ironic side note: So after the go ahead was given in the 70s to strart producing the TV show The Bionic Woman that would make Lindsey Wagner a star, scouts were sent out to look for filming locations in LA. One person found the perfect location for a house that looks like a palace that would be owned by a wealthy sheek. They were allowed in and were talking with the owner over the details of the plans to use it. While that was going on the scout could hear a ruckus going on in the basement. Shortly the noise stops and out from the basement comes a young man who immediately 2 young guys sit down in the living room and eats a big bowls of cereal. The kid was David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen and the band practicing was obviously Van Halen. They were practicing in Davids dads house. It was used in the 1st season. 😂 For the record i heard this story in a 6 million dollar man podcast by the guy who scouted the house.
