this is the most realistic movie ever made about combat. It puts you there in the decision process without any apologies or period-details. Jazz music and unfiltered cigarettes don't get discussed. the most experienced guy gets moved up the line and into a leadership position whether he wants it or not. If he survived so far, he moves forward again towards the enemy, with others, until he's killed and replaced by the next guy in line. The Big Red One has a similar moment when the Bangalor Pipe is pushed into the barbed wire on D-day. Guys pick numbers and move the explosive device into place exposing themselves to enemy fire until it's put under the wire. Like it or not they do this until it's there or until they all die in the attempt.
He plays a horrible officer in this movie but he did a good job acting in the role. He would definitely not be the kind of person I would ever want to serve under. He had no knowledge or concept of tactics or strategy.

In the US Army it was the other way around. MGs were issued at company level (two per company in a weapons platoon). They could be attached to rifle platoons to support them but weren't an integral part. A German squad outgunned an American squad.

WWII Lt. Colonels average age at promotion were between 24-26. Full bird Colonels averaged in their late 20s to early 30s. Civil War General Custer was 23 when promoted to Brevette General. Today's army officers vary considerably.
Well the balance would shift toward the German side if we are talking about a platoon action. Three MG42s provide a lot of firepower that is spread out. I also guess the Germans moved a bit toward that redundancy (if not toward shifting the priority from MGs to riflemen) by introducing semiautomatic and assault rifles in 1944.
This movie is my favourite WW2 movie. Literally sends shivers down my spine. Best to get your hands on an M1 and a .45 if you were there. Thank god I'll never have to live this in my time being a mechanized infantry soldier. RIP!
Enjoyed that movie, surprised to. Compared to the optimism of June 1944, by this stage parts of the allied advance had bogged down, hurtgen forest a terrible case in point. And replacements being rushed to the front, confused and bewildered and lacking the comprehensive preparation of their earlier 1944 colleagues. Added to that some very ambitious careerist officers looking to their postwar careers, and high attrition among the forward infantry units. All in all a bad bad period in US army history, all the more reason to wonder how the average GI got through despite those conditions
There are actually a lot of good books about this battle and they all mention that due to steady attrition the quality of replacements was pretty poor and included a lot of rear area types who had been hastily made into riflemen and men who were really too old for front line combat. The effects of attritions are one of the main themes of this movie.

A german squad could outgun an American squad but that was heavily dependent upon the German squad being in a good position with their Machine gun in operation. While the American squad's firepower....was far more flexible and not dependent on one man, his weapon and its set up. So, I am willing to bet that more often then not, American squads outgunned German squads.
Yeah 11 Semi automatic weapons with an automatic weapon against 9 or so soldiers with bolt action rifles with one automatic weapon. The BAR is far easier to carry around than a MG-42, so the BAR squad is more flexible.

One must remember an mg34/42 could be configured as a lmg with drum mags and bipod similar to the bar and also as a hmg on a pod. They could tune the fire rate depening on what role it was supposed to fill, not to mention there are records that the mg34 was extremely accurate when used semi-auto. I'd also like to note that the mp40 was more accurate and reliable than most smgs at the time and unless i remember wrong the german platoon had more smgs than the american counterpart. But mabye i got the wrong indo
German might not have seen him hiding...on Normandy Beach a Heer sentry overlooked a US GI only 10 feet from his position...fear and anxiety will change your perception...even after the traumatic event.

At this point in the war what Germany lacked in resources they made up for in experience, tenacity and willingness to fight for their "fatherland". They were also fighting, for the most part, a defensive war by now. The German soldier was the best soldier on the battlefield during WWII.
Once the war reached The Fatherland, the mob that had been driven across France had a reason to fight again. They were protecting their own soil, and fought like it.

I don’t know if it was the intent of the Director or not, but this film captures what was known as the Rupple Dupple. Ike’s biggest blunder of WW2. Basically take replacements away from their friends, split them up, and assign them to unfamiliar units. Resulted in thousands of needless deaths.
My arguments are useless? The U.S. had a semi-auto rifle as standard issue okay? the German Gewehr 43 was a piece of shit and never saw wide use. The MP44 came out at the very end and in limited numbers. The germans never had a long range bomber...the list goes on. Look, there is no way on this green earth...that you are going to convince anybody with any historical aptitude that the U.S. was technologically inferior to the Germans. Period
You chaps do realize, that on the European Front the Americans were getting the shit kicked out of them, in the same extent in which they dished it out. The Pacific fighting was also incredibly tough, but the Americans were a lot more effective on that front. In both war theatres they had air superiority and superiority in numbers, but the Germans put up one hell of a fight (especially because they actually had effective tanks).
I would agree, however, they never fully made the transition as those new weapons never came out late or were never standardized...but I agree they were thinking in that direction towards the end
You're joking, right? You realize that the Germans invented the first Assault Rifle during WW2, right (The STG)? They also had a semi-auto rifle at the time, the Gewehr 43, which held 10 bullets per mag. They also had incredible tanks trains, cars, and other manufactured tech. Just because they used bolt action rifles doesn't put them behind the US by any means. The US still used the Springfield at the time, and the Brits still used the Lee Enfield Rifle. Your argument is worthless.
I think he was saying “our bailey bridge”. I have been through that area several times. The battle of Schmidt and Komerschied are documented in the official Army history called Three Battles and the battle across the Kall River is described in detail. The original Kall River bridge crossed the Kall next to an old mill called Mestrenger Muele. It is still there today and houses a German restaurant that is quite good. The bridge has been replaced with a stone bridge and is at the bottom of the Kall River valley. The Kall at this point is more of a stream that a river being not very wide and certainly not deep at all. The mistake the Americans made was in totally underestimating the narrowness and steep nature of the Kall Trail which leads from Vossenach down the valley, across the Kall in then back up a steep narrow trail to Komerscheid and Schmidt. Attempting to use this trail as the 28th US Infantry Division main supply route was fool-hearty and a clear indicator that the senior Army leadership had little to no understanding of the terrain and the situation our soldiers faced on the battlefield. In the end it was a fools errand to go through there and many of the senior leadership at that time would rather have forgotten the battle rather than memorializing it. It was not our Army leadeship’s proudest moments although the junior leaders, non coms and enlisted fought and died there bravely. The battle was a failure of the senior Army leadership who steered well clear of the battle area and thus made decisions that bore little resemblance to the reality on the ground. I think the movie present this clearly!
These comments are what I hate about TH-cam. Too much smack talk, and not enough sticking to the issue, which is the movie. I come here looking for a good discussion about the Hurtgen Forest, and everybody is more interested in trading childish insults. So what do people think about the Hurtgen battles? I think the Hurtgen is a case study in how not to fight a battle. The American generals fell into at least two traps. The first was fighting the battle on the map without regard for the actual conditions. The second was responding to the failure of the initial attacks by committing more and more divisions into the quagmire instead of looking at the situation and coming up with alternatives.
We tend to forget that pinning a star on a person's shoulder doesn't make them any less susceptible to human flaws. It's actually pretty common, psychologically, for one to try to recover a bad investment by investing more. "Just a little farther and we will win, we cant loose after all this effort". Casinos know this phenomenon very well, and use it to good effect(I dont know if it has a name...).it is indescribably tragic, but I think that's what happened here, and I think any person can dupe themselves into this mindset if they are not careful...
@@leewilkinson6372 it didn't help that very few of those generals ever went close to the Hurtgen Forest. I first learned about this battle in college from General Gavin's memoirs from the war. The 82nd Airborne was sent into the Hurtgen after the Ardennes Offensive to do the same thing the 28th was ordered to do in this clip. Gavin went with the leading elements down the Kall River Trail to see the conditions for himself since he had already heard so much about it. The trail was impassable, disabled vehicles littered the roads or had slid into deep ravines, and many of the dead were still where they had fallen months earlier. Gavin had been in the Hurtgen for a day and already knew more about the battlefield than any of the generals ordering attacks based on what they saw on the map.

Gavin is a fascinating character from start to finish. I'll have to see if I can find a good biography on him. I still stand by the point I was trying to make(Gavin being an exception), but now I wonder how much politics at the higher levels of command played into other leaders' perception of stakes vs potential reward balanced against blood already spilled...were they worried that backing out of the fight would get them relieved(a de facto admission of failure to plan properly)...and thanks for making me dig even deeper. The Germans were in the Hurtgen, and that is where the battle would be fought. Alternatives were taboo subjects.

I agree. Am American and my dad served in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He served two years in the Atlantic and two years in the Pacific on a PT Boat. But I know Churchill was a murdering bastard. He set the Lusitania up to be sunk. He said a few months before that he wished the Germans would sink a American Ship to get us in WWII. If I remember correctly it was U 21. The German Captain gave the torpedo man the choice to sink it or not. The German crew knew the ship was only 11 miles from Ireland and no way would the ship sink in less than 20 minutes from one torpedo. The ship had millions of rounds of rifle ammo and Copper and aluminum power for bombs and Artillery shells. That's all they could find because in the fifties the British Depth Charged the ship for two weeks because technology was catching up to them. When the first divers arrived at the ship it was to dangerous to explore the hulk because of the Depth Charging. I believe America may have fought on the wrong side in WWl. We should have never got in that war. Churchill is also responsible for Germany building up before WWII. Churchill went on a ship building spree and it causes Hitler to over act. World war two had a bunch of evil men running their Nations. And they send the youth to die for their insanity.

It took multiple superpowers and nations to take down Germany at the time. They fought a war on multiple fronts, and held their own for 6 years with far less Allies, resources, and men. Yes, the Germans were intelligent in mobilizing their army while fighting on multiple fronts. The Americans only rem'bered for the atom bombs but it was the Stalin who held the ground and made war bloody hell. At the end U.S General Eisenhower says " We fought the wrong enemy". um.. lets see here. Hitler's armed forces, aprox. 18 Million TOTAL, while the US and Britain (including Canada) together had over 30 Million, and Russia had about 34 Million. The French were taken over and Poland was also taken over, but they had a decent army too. Nazi Germany WITHOUT A DOUBT, and if you knew any history, had the best: training, weaponry, and technology. The best of the Nazis (over 80% of German soldiers was against Russia) and they were outnumbered 12 to ONE. They lasted 6yrs!

Manning is very smart and showed his guys he knew what he was doing. But the Japenese soldiers in my opinion were much more difficult than the Germans. The germans had much better weapons. But the thing about the Germans guns, such as the MG42, it shoots so fast you can't keep it steady. But the Americans were much better trained and the Krauts were just wussies.

I have not seen the movie but, how does a guy that out of shape get through boot camp. Let alone, out in the field.

I think he was saying “our bailey bridge”. I have been through that area several times. The battle of Schmidt and Komerschied are documented in the official Army history called Three Battles and the battle across the Kall River is described in detail. The original Kall River bridge crossed the Kall next to an old mill called Mestrenger Muele. It is still there today and houses a German restaurant that is quite good. The bridge has been replaced with a stone bridge and is at the bottom of the Kall River valley. The Kall at this point is more of a stream that a river being not very wide and certainly not deep at all. The mistake the Americans made was in totally underestimating the narrowness and steep nature of the Kall Trail which leads from Vossenach down the valley, across the Kall in then back up a steep narrow trail to Komerscheid and Schmidt. Attempting to use this trail as the 28th US Infantry Division main supply route was fool-hearty and a clear indicator that the senior Army leadership had little to no understanding of the terrain and the situation our soldiers faced on the battlefield. In the end it was a fools errand to go through there and many of the senior leadership at that time would rather have forgotten the battle rather than memorializing it. It was not our Army leadeship’s proudest moments although the junior leaders, non coms and enlisted fought and died there bravely. The battle was a failure of the senior Army leadership who steered well clear of the battle area and thus made decisions that bore little resemblance to the reality on the ground. I think the movie present this clearly!

These comments are what I hate about TH-cam. Too much smack talk, and not enough sticking to the issue, which is the movie. I come here looking for a good discussion about the Hurtgen Forest, and everybody is more interested in trading childish insults. So what do people think about the Hurtgen battles? I think the Hurtgen is a case study in how not to fight a battle. The American generals fell into at least two traps. The first was fighting the battle on the map without regard for the actual conditions. The second was responding to the failure of the initial attacks by committing more and more divisions into the quagmire instead of looking at the situation and coming up with alternatives.
We tend to forget that pinning a star on a person's shoulder doesn't make them any less susceptible to human flaws. It's actually pretty common, psychologically, for one to try to recover a bad investment by investing more. "Just a little farther and we will win, we cant loose after all this effort". Casinos know this phenomenon very well, and use it to good effect(I dont know if it has a name...).it is indescribably tragic, but I think that's what happened here, and I think any person can dupe themselves into this mindset if they are not careful...
@@leewilkinson6372 it didn't help that very few of those generals ever went close to the Hurtgen Forest. I first learned about this battle in college from General Gavin's memoirs from the war. The 82nd Airborne was sent into the Hurtgen after the Ardennes Offensive to do the same thing the 28th was ordered to do in this clip. Gavin went with the leading elements down the Kall River Trail to see the conditions for himself since he had already heard so much about it. The trail was impassable, disabled vehicles littered the roads or had slid into deep ravines, and many of the dead were still where they had fallen months earlier. Gavin had been in the Hurtgen for a day and already knew more about the battlefield than any of the generals ordering attacks based on what they saw on the map.

Gavin is a fascinating character from start to finish. I'll have to see if I can find a good biography on him. I still stand by the point I was trying to make(Gavin being an exception), but now I wonder how much politics at the higher levels of command played into other leaders' perception of stakes vs potential reward balanced against blood already spilled...were they worried that backing out of the fight would get them relieved(a de facto admission of failure to plan properly)...and thanks for making me dig even deeper. @@leewilkinson6372 another thing that I have read about concerning how the generals lost their heads over the Hurtgen is that when someone suggested things that any armchair general can see, such as attacking Schmidt from Lammersdorf across terrain more suitable for American weapons and tactics, they were quickly rebuffed. The Germans were in the Hurtgen, and that is where the battle would be fought. Alternatives were taboo subjects.

But, i don't mean any disrespect (tons of which i have for you) when i say that "Drieonem" is correct. Over 80% of the German forces served against Russia, outnumbered 12-1. The Germans had better weapons and training (dont argue this im begging you, its fact) and thats why they lasted 6 & 1/2 years in a war, outnumbered 18 million total, to about 61 million (the Allies). Wrong again. Read my comment 7 years later. Lol...a country that did what the US did and "only" lost 400,000. Russia attacked a Japanese position and lost 10,000 men. Show me where in the entire Pacific and over 100 D-days the US lost 10,000 in 5 days. Give you a massive clue. ..it didn't. And on Germany being all bad ass, so were the British and American and Canadian troops. They actually beat the Nazis. Maybe Hitler shouldn't have tried taking over the world.

better weapons....the U.S. infantry had a semi-automatic rifle that held 8 rounds...while the Germans were still fucking around with bolt action rifles.....this allowed the Americans to dominate a lot of firefights. so don't give us this shit that the germans were so much more advanced...because anything they had...we had too if not more.

I agree. Am American and my dad served in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He served two years in the Atlantic and two years in the Pacific on a PT Boat. But I know Churchill was a murdering bastard. He set the Lusitania up to be sunk. He said a few months before that he wished the Germans would sink a American Ship to get us in WWII. If I remember correctly it was U 21. The German Captain gave the torpedo man the choice to sink it or not. The German crew knew the ship was only 11 miles from Ireland and no way would the ship sink in less than 20 minutes from one torpedo. The ship had millions of rounds of rifle ammo and Copper and aluminum power for bombs and Artillery shells. That's all they could find because in the fifties the British Depth Charged the ship for two weeks because technology was catching up to them. When the first divers arrived at the ship it was to dangerous to explore the hulk because of the Depth Charging. I believe America may have fought on the wrong side in WWl. We should have never got in that war. Churchill is also responsible for Germany building up before WWII. Churchill went on a ship building spree and it causes Hitler to over act. World war two had a bunch of evil men running their Nations. And they send the youth to die for their insanity.

You're right. Forget about it. The Marines would've been slammed and losses would've been massive. You silly Americans always conveniently forget the Allies. It took multiple superpowers and nations to take down Germany at the time. They fought a war on multiple fronts, and held their own for 6 years with far less Allies, resources, and men.
I am not promoting Nazism/fascism in any manner, I'm simply stating that their military was clearly superior in the time frame and they deserve some credit.
Yes, the Germans were intelligent in mobilizing their army while fighting on multiple fronts. The Americans only rem'bered for the atom bombs but it was the Stalin who held the ground and made war bloody hell.
At the end U.S General Eisenhower says " We fought the wrong enemy".

um.. lets see here. Hitler's armed forces, aprox. 18 Million TOTAL, while the US and Britain (including Canada) together had over 30 Million, and Russia had about 34 Million. The French were taken over and Poland was also taken over, but they had a decent army too. Nazi Germany WITHOUT A DOUBT, and if you knew any history, had the best: training, weaponry, and technology. The best of the Nazis (over 80% of German soldiers was against Russia) and they were outnumbered 12 to ONE. They lasted 6yrs!

Manning is very smart and showed his guys he knew what he was doing. But the Japenese soldiers in my opinion were much more difficult than the Germans. The germans had much better weapons. But the thing about the Germans guns, such as the MG42, it shoots so fast you can't keep it steady. But the Americans were much better trained and the Krauts were just wussies.
