+The Frazzle For me it was Pole Position, then Hang On, then this - but Outrun was so next level it was insane - those graphics man, and the moving cockpit of the sitdown Deluxe... for 1986, everyone was quite rightly blown away :)

it's funny, i didn't even like this game that much (okay i liked it a lot, it just wasn't my favorite), but i literally couldn't drive the first time i played the 2003 remake of this game on the original xbox because the tears wouldn't let me. never felt that way about a game before and since. pretty sure this game is at fault for my love of cars to this day.

I love Outrun. I still have it in many formats including on the PS3... before Sony pulled it due to the expiration of a licensing contract with Ferrari. Anyone remember the ZX Spectrum version? To have the in-game music, you had to play a separate cassette on your hi-fi lol. The arcade version will always be a classic to me.

I am so happy we had an old computer with games like this when I was a kid. Born in 1996 and started playing 1999 and got playstation in as late as 2007. I spent age 3-11 with Windows 3.0 :D Played all these old classics for most of my childhood. Non of my friends have experienced this, I feel I can somehow relate to people born in 80's when it comes to games.

Very keenly, this was the racing game that I loved the best at 15 years old. At that point, I already used to love Pole Position, Odyssey 2's "Speedway!", and Sega's Turbo, but that race arcade game called "Out-Run!" - I loved it. Very dearly so!
The way I had to understand the game was this - you are in a red race car with a male driver with your female companion passenger--likely a modified Corvette. You are going from the East Coast all the way to the West Coast and you have to deal with 5 racing stages that throws almost every obstacle at you. There is a tinge of the "Spy Hunter" game where if you hit any passing trucks, vans, or other vehicles, say goodbye to your perfect lap time in minutes and hundredths of seconds (for example, "59"23"). And the turns will throw you for a curve, even if you are warned with those big red arrows on the types of turns you will be facing. The S-curve and hairpin turns were really tough and if you did not negotiate those turns, you slow down greatly. I did negotiate those turns about 69 percent of the time. Maximum top speed was 293 kilometers per hour, and since the maker, Sega, was Japanese, that is how they do it (no English system), so I had to figure out that this was about 170-180 mph at maximum speed.
I liked the transitions of racing stages--in the pictures of towns, countries, cities. In a few of the stages, they even throw obstacles like dust and sand at the final stage, and even stone monuments. After you complete all 5 stages of racing, the computer determines the passing bonus and you finally get a chance to relax after all of that racing.

The trick to clocking this game was to actually take your foot off the gas once in a while until a way through the traffic would open up. I remember seeing so many people in the arcade just put their foot to the floor the whole way and drift into other cars on the tight corners or smack into rocks

Outrun was an ...outrage! This was the 1st video game I played where it just ended! Every other game, we played until we died 3 times - so we could play as long as we stayed alive. I remember being angry that the computer just decided to end it and take my quarter. The reward for doing well on other video games was that you kept playing; the reward for this one (if you did well) was that you lost your quarter. Wait, I'm still mad!
