this song is actually not written or sung by louis, the original singer was a German playwright called Bertolt Brecht it was for his play 'the three penny opera'
When I was a kid the 1920s weren't all that long ago. Now the roaring twenties are a century past and the hey day of Louie Armstrong is long gone but his music lives on!! RIP Louie!
You can find great young musicians in New Orleans who keep his music alive by playing it well. I am a 50 year old washboard player from Chicago who loves playing his music. I will do my best at doing my part with keeping the wonderful music alive.
This man louis is a one in a million he's style was amusing...as he was amusing and his voice was unique... there will never another Louis Armstrong....R.I.P brother.

But none of them were the original from Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera). By Berthed Brecht, try his version or perhaps Lotte Lenya's version (wife of Kurt Weill). These give the best feeling of 1920/30's Germany. An accurate modern version comes from Ute Lempe.
This is a genuine gem. I was searching for Mack the Knife, hadn't known Louis sang it, but this song is perfect. Disappointed a lot of it was filmed at Louis' back ☹️Things weren't great for even the best black musicians back in the day. Glad we've evolved.

My father was born in 33 and grew up to this music, as did I in the 80s. This was our bond. He's been gone for 23 years but not too far as we still jam to this.
Just to point out to those calling this a cover Louis Armstrong was the first to release this as a song in it's own right (having been in the Three Penny Opera before) and he certainly sang it long before Bobby Darin or Sinatra who then covered it so due respect to the origin of the song and remember it was released in '56 so tastes and arrangements were not quite what your current taste may be.
Wow, thanks so much for that info...I never looked into the earlier versions of the song believing Bobby Darin, who basically is synonymous with the song, was the author...You learn something new every day! P.S from wiki..."Mack the Knife" or "The Ballad of Mack the Knife", originally "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer", is a song composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht it premiered in 1928!
Louis Armstrong was the best! My late mother told me about how she and some of her friends once got to meet him at a club where he was playing at back in her days of youth. She talked about how he came and sat down at the table with her group when he took a well deserved break from performing. She thought that he was so kind, funny, and polite.
The pleasure I get from listening to him is so hard to describe. Only a stage -god like this can fill your soul with his magic. Now he is singing Mack the knife in front of God and even though the lyrics was not taken from the Bible I'm sure He can still give him a loving smile. Louis you will be in our hearts for ever. Thanks God for his talent we have enjoyed it so much. A hug from my beautiful Chile.

I find it amazing the nasty, evil, mean-spirited comments that ppl will post on social media....just awful....singing is all relative and left open to the listener's interpretation.....there are those that will love some singers voices while not liking others (MJ sold millions of records, but not everyone on the planet was a fan. Just because someone can hold a note does not mean that they can sing. a true singer is one who is blessed with charisma in their voice that will appeal to listeners n hold their attention....Louie Armstrong had a very unique singing voice and was an accomplished trumpet player...he is not talking the song he is singing the song....And he had far more than 2 hits...the man had a 40yr successful career and was one of the highest-paid entertainers of his time. not to mention that he did this as a black person during a time when segregation n racism was rampant.....Yes, ppl are entitled to express their opinion but to do it in such a nasty mean spirited disrespectful way is just uncalled for!!!

Louis had a big hit with this in Australia in 1956. I believe it was banned in the UK.
