- Legendary jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald appeared at The Embers Nightclub in Toorak Road, South Yarra, Melbourne on 4 December 1960 in a performance that was filmed for Channel 9's "BP Super Show" and broadcast on January 1961. Backed by her regular group at the time, the Lou Levy Quartet (Lou Levy (p); Wilf Middlebrooks (b); Herb Ellis (g); and Gus Johnson (d)), Lady Ella put in a typically masterful performance of jazz, blues & show standards..including this brilliant rendition of her then current hit "Mack The Knife"

What is fun is to listen to this song on her Live in Berlin album. In that version of this, she forgets the words. She actually won a Grammy for that record. This one has some of the same fun stuff at the end. Live in Berlin was recorded on Feb 13, 1960.

Bobby, Ella, and Louis each had their own spin on this classic and each iteration holds its own merits. Bobby's rendition is by far the best, Louis is the most laid back, but Ella sure knows how to make this song her own as well with the energy she poured into it. This woman was one of a kind. RIP.

Fairly sure I read in a Sinatra biography that Ella went straight back to Washington after these shows at the Embers to appear in the star - studded spectacular that Frank produced for JFK's inaugural celebration. Great piece of history that you've posted here. Thanks.

Melissa Burgess, this was recorded at Embers Nightclub in Toorak Rd, Sth Yarra on 4th December, 1960. It was later broadcast on Channel 9's BP Supershow & was issued on DVD through Umbrella Entertainment in 2013 as "BP Super Show : Ella Fitzgerald Live In Australia" Well worth hunting down if you can find a copy
