You can see how Snape was truly on their side when he hesitated to fight back when McGonagall casts the first spell. He then deflects the spell toward the Carrows and before he leaves he takes their wands

McGonagall stands in front of Snape and it literally disarms him for a second. The second time a woman throws herself in from of Harry to protect him. He wasn't there when Lily died bit seeing McGonagall do it is too much for him and he doesn't dare hurt her.

This scene was particularly devastating to me, the heartbreak of Dumbledore's death is still quite clear on Minerva's face, and the betrayal she likely felt by Severus killing Dumbledore, that one of her 'friends', collegues..could do that. It showed another side of her character that just left me in shock in the theatres.

With that in mind, he takes out the Carrow siblings, does not harm a single student or member of the Order, removes himself from the situation, and all while maintaining his cover. Bravo, Snape.

Right before the first attack there is a moment were Snape lets his guard down, then immediately puts his Guard back up realizing that he now has to fight a Dear friend in his Defense in order to keep his promise, gut wrenching moment that now in the eyes of everyone he is just another DeathEater and has to keep the Lie Maintained. I like the detail in the crowds of students being on disbelief as indicated by their collective gasps. First when the wands are drawn obviously, which inclines that they can't believe what is happening. Then another collective gasp is made when they see McGonagall actually go on the offensive at Snape after hearing this information from Harry. It went from a theatrical showdown based on a rumor to a death match based on fact in a matter of seconds.

Snape killed Dumbledore because the latter requested he do so. Snape was always on Harry’s side, hence him not even trying to kill McGonagall. Instead he helped her by knocking out Alecto and Amycus Carrow, and then fleeing to let Dumbledore’s Army reclaim what was rightfully theirs.

Snape had to kill Dumbledore out of regret - he is on Harry's side, truly, and all along he was protecting him. Take for example in the Quidditch match - Snape was whispering incantations to try and get Harry's broom under control when it was actually jinxed, and Hermoine thought he was trying to hurt him.

Snape must have been living a nightmare in the Deathly Hallows.
-Every non Death Eater wants his head on a plate.
-He is being face-to-face with Voldemort while somehow shielding his mind from Voldemort.
-He has to keep the Carrows in check and protect the students without someone reading his mind or finding out his loyalty.
Best character just for his cunning which he used in a good way in my opinion.
