Congratulations Nikon. The company that is always innovating for Z9 owners.
Unlike Sony and Canon which abandoned A1 and R3 owners the moment they cashed in their payment.
Thank you Nikon, owning both Z8 and Z9, all these firmware updates are making the shooting experience better each time, and it shoes your commitment towards us the buyers!!
Always a pleasure to hear what you have to say, Ricci. Thank you! I hadn't bought a Nikon "flagship camera" since the D3X, but the Z9 was too amazing to pass up. Now, two years later, it just keeps getting better! Thank you, Nikon!
Most photographers that own a Z9 have standardized their workflows using RAW. So improvements in JPEG pre-capture functionality provides limited value. Even 10 fps with pre-capture RAW for just one second would be very helpful, if only to simply counter the average human reaction time to visual stimulus of around 300 milliseconds. Thank you for all the updates, Nikon!
Have you ever worked for a news agency or wire service that is uploading moments after capture? That's a JPG workflow 100%.
@@industryrule-4080 for sure, hence my comment was qualified with "most photographers". The workflow can be specific to the job. While I have never worked for a news agency, I do cover events, specifically sports tournaments where the client wants pictures to publish asap on social media and website. I shoot RAW+JPEGs and hand off the JPEGs memory card as soon as I get to the media room for the editors to make selects and pursue the required approvals for publishing. The editors don't want to have to deal with RAW formats coming in from a variety of cameras. JPEG is a fantastic standard. I worked on the development of the format sponsored by ISO & CCITT (ITU-T) in 1988!
Pixel shift and RAW pre-capture ! Please, Nikon!😢
Thanks Nikon for a truly awesome camera that is highly reliable, has phenomenal image quality and excellent ergonomics and menu options. Supplying all these useful, thoughtful updates after the purchase is greatly appreciated.
what the Z9 needs is pre capture in RAW ..... Olympus has it
Realy miss the 20FPS RAW with pre capture, If this is a thing i will but it directly.
All major camera company's have such flaws, there is no perfect camera.
- Canon R3, Low resolution
- Sony A1, Perfect resolution, Old focus system, expencive cards
- Sony A9iii, Low resolution, Awesome pre capture in RAW
- Nikon Z9, Perfect resolution but no RAW pre capture.
Z9 is the best system so far in my opinion but i will not yet pull the trigger to buy one.
Nikon needs to provide documentation on how separate settings in the Shooting menu banks for video and photos has been implemented. You still can't change the name of one without affecting the other. And why do we have separate banks for Shooting and Custom settings? It's pretty hard to track which combo has what. A much simpler implementation combining both Shooting and Custom settings makes a lot more sense. It is still way too cumbersome to use this feature.
Nikon is going strong and showing Sony how to make meaningful updates for cameras
Making my Z9 even better! Thanks, Nikon! 👍
Way to keep bringing it Nikon!
Please consider adding to Z8 and Z9 the bracketing options found on Z6 and Z7 - specifically two-frames bracketing, to have one -3stops exposure to protect highlights!
Thanks Ricci for your usual well explained information and explanations. Excellent stuff. Nikon are really becoming a heavily customer aware company and I feel we've had almost two cameras out of the Z8 and Z9. Amazing. Feels comfortable to be invested in their hardware going forward.
Beautiful Presentation!!!
Zf + 45mpx + 1tb internal storage = Dream of every Nikonian 😍🙌🏼
AND savings settings to the body, NOT a card. If a card, at the very least allow saving to card 2 !!!
Nikon makes me happy, as a long term customer this makes me feel you guys are setting the bar so high for the brand post purchase, its value for money. Having updates makes it feel current and values, its not a purchase and forget, no more Version II with small changes like D5 to D6, these are the same body with additional functions, thats massive in my mind. Not a fanboy, just a happy customer seeing these updates, having the Z8 i am more than happy with anything i get extra to my original purchase. I can't wait to see the impact of RED patents and tech moving both ways on future, the futures bright for sure. Also Look at Ricci, glad your presenting, best feature for me, Custom offsetting for flicker reduction, i shoot arena's and return to the same places each year, this will make it a lot easier to save it and add it as defaults in my bank for events, and awards. GJ Ricci and GJ Nikon, just having a realisation why i like this Brands support.
Hello Ricci, You must thank the team at Nikon for some supper update, let alone the great Z cameras and not sure what the team. developing the Z glass were doing but the Z glass is just so much nicer better than the very good F glass. So thank you Nikon.
I expected Pixel Shift with this new firmware version. But unfortunately. Hopefully an upcoming new version will have this for the Z9.
Loving many things:
- cycling thru AF areas is totally awesome 🤩
- high speed JPEG FINE 👌
- High ISO type B 👏
Now what i really miss, which seems super easy to implement, is for Recall Shooting Functions, being able to set High speed modes ! Why stopping at 20fps ??
What do you think Ricci ?
Great analysis! My wish list to Nikon: 1. see "blinkies" the same way (or similar) as we have in video mode. 2. Pre- capture RAW
Please describe what you mean?
@@AeternusPhotography What did you don't understand from what he said? Blinkies in still photos (show over/under-exposure) and Pre-capture in RAW and not only JPG?
@@TerryKontopoulos Blinkies are used by photographers to see blown out areas, show as flashing areas. This is a colloquial word... needs to be translated to native word.
@@chrisbaudeg3233 I didn't invented it (!) I merely referred to a common used term...
Tx ricci for the short & crisp update - Two comments - PIXEL shift & faster Raw shooting would have been welcome - Also why cant we add a firmware update & have zebras showing overblown highlights in the view finder itself ( in still mode - its there in Video mode !!!!) - have taken up many times with Nikon to no Avail - can you help
I'm still shooting the D810 so excuse me for not knowing & asking. But doesn't the EVF show real time exposure ( sorry to say I heard someone say only down to 5.6) ? Never used a mirrorless or EVF as of yet. Thank you for any replies.
@@thomastuorto9929 the issue is even with real time exposure portions of the image you really do not know if you are clipping in the highlights - - its a real help - i am a die hard nikonian - but this is one feature which sont has which is a killer - BTW nikon has this is in Video mode
@@venkatalgramam4461 yup about the zebras in vid,= read your comment. You would think it would be easy to add. Maybe Sony owns the vid/zebra rights?
Maybe built in ND / Gradient filters? 'a la' OM-1
@@thomastuorto9929zebras for close-to-be-overexposed areas are available in the viewfinder in both photo and video mode on the sony a7iv. Areas are shown with zebras when we are close to lose information in the highlights and disappear when they are too much overexposed
Thanks Ricci. Some good stuff there - but no pixel shift shooting. 😔
Yes, I miss the pixel shift aswell 😢
@@AndreasPott-Photography What are you shooting that 45mpx is not enough for you? xD
@@unique93obrI‘m looking for the higher color deep. And the function is available at the Z8 and why not for the Z9?
@@AndreasPott-Photography yeah, but if 45mpx 14bit uncompressed raw is not enough, i don’t know what are you photographing? 😅
Disappointment about C15, we were hoping the change would include RAW quality
Your Nikon special Arc'teryx jacket is very nice. Where can I get it?
Yesss!! 'Cycle AF Area' modes is something I was hoping we'd get in the Z 9 :)
Its dispointing that Nikon seems to just have abandoned a large base of their customers with mid tier Z's.
I dont expect my Z6ii to perform like a Z8 or 9, but a few simple extras like Bird AF would be nice.
There is no way the dual processors cant handle a few more tweaks.
Come on Nikon , show the rest of your customer base some love.
Your content is very well done, clear and precise, let me ask you something, the Z9 has or hasn't a global shutter? thanks in advance.
The Zf has 77 customizable AF configurations under AF-area mode C1 + C2. The Z9 has just 20. When will we see an increase?
Love my Z9 and Z8 !
Glad to see Nikon taking care of their customers. Good deal!
Thank you! Great!
Amazing
The gift that keeps on giving.
Thanks for a concise summary of the new features.
What happened to pixel-shift??? The Z8 has had it for a while now and the flagship Z9 still doesn’t have it?
What is about Pixel-Shift?
What is about storing images in the HEIF Format?
30fps and Pre-capture are still in JPEG. Wish Nikon implement this if a function like Metering is assigned to a Function button, user does not have to hold the Function button while rotating the Command Dial. In other words, it would be more convenient if the Function button is pressed, the assigned function/feature will display on either evf or (and) monitor so the user just rotates the Command Dial to select the desired feature and hit OK button to complete the process. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤
Hi Nikon team, would it be possible to get a description of what high iso NR mode means? type A vs B, what scenario would be suggested for shooting modes etc etc. Thank you.
No pixel shift?
bruh, all these things and people complain. I had pixel shift for 1 year now on my canon r5 and never used it. If u want pixel shift, get another camera
@@gzarari The Z8 got it, why not the Z9?
NO precapture RAW and no PIxel Shift. What a disappointment.
Great, thanks for the video. By the way, I found a cool program for Nikon cameras called Tornado NKN, a bunch of functions
Wish pre capture can do 15 fps raw files 🥹
Even 10 would be nice in raw. I don't see a lot of sense of it in jpeg. Yes, you won't miss the moment, but you'll have it in "meh" quality.
Yes, I reckon if they can do it, they would have done it sooner rather later. Probably too hard to for the current generation of processor and getting a 10 fps pre burst probably isn’t going to be too useful. I reckon 15 fps is the least they need to pull off. I hope I am wrong. Only reason still keeping an OM-1 around is using pre capture raw and it is one of the few things Z9 can’t do at the moment. All those jpeg pre capture is nice but sometimes it isn’t as flexible in post production
@@ryantang8146 i'd be happy with 10 in the Z8. My good old D500 could take 10 fps at it's fastest. Having that as pre-capture raw would be nice and better than not having the raw option. We will see. But the fact that Sony can do 120 with the A9 mk3 shows that there is space for improvement. But I'm so happy with the AF system of the Z8/Z9, I can live without this.
Hi! What means "Added [DX (24×16)] to image area options"? DX area was there from the beginning. Has anything changed?
After 55 years as a Nikon shooter I am for the first time somewhat disappointed, as we didn’t get Pixel Shift on the Nikon flagship camera. I’d be prepared to lose all the filming features for this or even pay for this feature. From the first day the Z9’s details were published I thought that it was feasible to increment Pixel Shift because of the actual size of the sensor.
It should be feasible, Z8 Hardware is not better than Z9 by any means. Just be patient and wait for the next update
and the waiting goes on. When you are a Nikon user you must be used to wait and wait and wait and ......
@Hofsaedter you are right , we waited for 5 months for the 30fps RAW and they didn't do it. Also, no HEIF support for writing on memory Card. But hopefully they will add, as technically speaking, they do contain same Hardware so it is feasible
So yall think things must be added anyhow for your sake only? Wherelse things are added for the higher demands or new generation camera thats what you should know. They must keep adding things and nothing to innovate when a new gen cam is on the making then yall will come and complain for the lack of innovation in that new cam
I hope the focus cycle option and focus point border make it to the Zf
Canon user here but that auto capture function is so good. All cameras should incorporate it in the future 😊
Hey Nikon Europe anything coming for the Z6ii/Z7ii owners? Feeling neglected now.
Can anyone tell me that you update the latest firmware and still can use the ETZ21 ADAPTER for Sony lens?
I'm not able to choose separate video and poor shooting banks...is there a setting to enable or is this not available in US?
Dear Ricci, will recording video on dual memory cards simultaneously- is a future option on the next firmware update ?
Thank you for the video.
This update is a little disappointing, I dont think it should be classed as a "major" update. No pixel shift or 30fps in raw. I hope these features get added soon, its supposed to be a flagship camera.
Yes, pixel shift and 30fps are the only things a flagship camera needs to have. This camera is getting better every time (MUCH better), and there you are, claiming that flagship cameras need pixel shift and 30fps raw or they are not flagship cameras. So sad...
@@urosjovanovic3142 Probably @martinshaw2385 value his/hers (and mine) money more than you... He/she (and me) paid more for less of a very serious feature which you don't care about, but not all agree, read the comments...
@@urosjovanovic3142he probably uses a canon rebel ti 😂😂. If you have a z9 and complain about doing photos, its really not the camera
@@gzarariWhere have I heard this before??
So we're not going to get pre release in RAW ever?
Pre Release in RAW must be brought by Nikon in the next firmware update. It's a highly sought feature by everyone.
Quite possibly the hardware can’t do it. Could well be the same story for pixel shift.
Or 4k240fps in Video
@@1armbiker if Z8 can do pixelshift then Z9 too..... hardware in Z9 is better than z8
Yep I am guessing we are reaching closer to the limit of the hardware. We might see diminishing returns in terms of firmware update.
Great video as always❤ I guess we will see another update soon full with video "nonsense" 😅 I use my Z9 as a raw video beast. My biggest problem...file sizes and usb ssd recording 🫠 Thank you for your content.
Very cool
The initial update from Nikon stated that you may have to download 5.0 twice.. Rici could you address this? I seem to have all or most of the listed updates. Thank you
No pixel shift ? Whyyy?
Too many mp... File too big for memory.
@@chrisbaudeg3233 But Z8 mem is ok?
Please show me on a Nikon Z9 with firmware 5.0 how I can switch the custom menu banks for photo and video independently. This doesn't work on my Z9 with firmware 5.0 and there is absolutely nothing to be found about it in the release note or in the addendum to firmware 5.0... (Google Translate: German English)
I have the same problem, the shooting banks for Photo and Video are still linked 😄
Turn on extended menu banks and its solved
@@marcelborsky8512I always have extended menu bank on, but photo and video are still switched together. In addition, the menu banks cannot be labeled individually. There is absolutely no reference to this change in the update manual!
This is something I really want to have and unfortunately after trying everything it does not work. What Ricci says is not actually shown working in the video. From the manual the only thing that has changed is the shooting MODE (PASM) will be remembered if you turn on extended menu banks - which comes with all kind of other settings that you may no want. I hope there's still a secret setting I have missed but otherwise I am disappointed that Nikon tries to sell you on a feature they don't actually have working.
I have the same issue and, yes, I have extended menu banks turned on as I always do. Anyone come up with a solution to make photo and video shooting banks independent from each other?
Some confusion: The banks are not independent, only the mode. Nikon USA removed a reference a few days after FW5 release. I can only assume some last minute bugs prevented it from being fully implemented, but it was too late for the media reels to be redone?
one camera (z9\z8) company.. unfortunately ... that about z5, z6, z7 ?
When can we get R3D Codec? just sayin ;)
Would love to see Nikon allow for gyroscopic data to be recorded to each video file so we can have the option to stabilize in post.
With Pixel Shift having been in the Z8 for ages, I’m shocked it’s not in this update. The other features look promising, thx!
Pixel Shift was not been in the Z8 until recently but since the last firmware. I was expecting it too, but I was not expecting it for the z8. When the Zf was introduced Nikon said the feature needed a redesign of the VR architecture.. It seems they eight had the changes on the Z8 or find a workaround. It may or may not come to the Z9
what is nikon upcoming crop sensor mirrorless camera
The pixel shift crowd are like the mouse from the book if you give a mouse a cookie.
I haven't see Ricci less enthusiastic for a new "Great" Upgrade than this time... Should have been labeled 4.5 NOT 5.0...
Is pixel shift coming?
Why have they not added pixel shift ?
Please bring firmware update for nikon z50
Great explanation Ricci! Thanks! I just downloaded and updated my Z9.
May nikon z9 👌👌
Bird AF and AF tracking (steady/...) for 2.0 Firmware of ZF please
What cage is that?
We're is the z6iii
Good stuff, thanks! Looking forward to continued support.
man this cameras keep getting more and more complex.
Wait a sec, pre-capture only admits jpegs? i thought it supported raw... i dont think i understand this new 15fps feature
No pixelshift?
Why not allow prerelease capture in raw?
Where is Pixel Shift ? :(
Bravo!!! These new features are super useful.
The Nikon Z 8 and Z 9 are outstanding cameras with great firmware support but you will get more customers with a Z 6 III at a more affordable price range. Bring the great Expeed 7 power down to more midrange models. The Zf camera is already getting very good customer feedback.
Getting pretty discouraged with Nikpn Z9. All our wait and anticipation for the Z9 and Nikon introduce the Z8 which is the same shooting wise as the Z9. I could have waited and paid $3000 less. Firmware 5.0 just brings the Z9 back up to the Z8. I was hoping for pre-capture raw. No wonder people are selling their Z9 and buying a Z8. Does nikon still consider a Z9 as a flagship? Or has the Z8 become the flagship?
High Frequency Flicker Reduction is most important to me. In photo pit with LEDs the Z9 produces heavy banding which renders the images useless. Now Nikon adds the possibility to use frequencies. But how do I know which is the right frequency? With 3 songs in the pit you don't have time to experiment which frequency and shutter speed will prevent banding! The Canon R3 has an automatic to measure for the right fractions of shutter speed. Why doesn't the automatic come with the Z9? Or how does Nikon think to find the right frequency if you just have no time for your shoot?
Still no RAW precapture??? :(
The functions and operation of the Z9 and Z8 must be identical !!!
PLEASE Nikon makes a synchronisation of the firmware to the same level. - The strength of Nikon lies in the standardised operation. The Z8 is also the backup camera for many professional photographers.
Found a bug! The PHOTO and VIDEO menu banks are still mirrored and can not be set to separate values such as PHOTO to A and VIDEO to D. Sent a report to Nikon Canada.
Here we go.... v5.01 in the works.
@@chrisbaudeg3233 Is that a serious information?
We need z6iii !!!
Why no LUT-support? Why no HEIF-support? Why no Pixel-Shift? Why no Pre RAW (with fast cards)… But many Room for future improvements… never regretted to be a Nikon shooter!
Thinks Ricci, all good stuff BUT, please, please, please can Nikon give us Pre-Capture in RAW.. Personally, I am not interested in the ultra high speed Pre-Capture, I am quite happy with 30fps or even 20fps but I do want RAW, not JPEG. Olympus have offered this for some time, why not Nikon? Thanks
Unfortunately photo menu A can’t have a different name from video menu A
Love the new firmware, but did not address a few key issues with Nikon Z8/Z9 cameras that limit their usability in video. I own both Sony and Nikon systems by the way. Here are 4 things Nikon can add via firmware to make their cameras really rival Sony in video. #1-Need ability to load use LUTs as well as ability to display LUTs out HDMI, not possible at the moment, thus requiring monitors with LUT ability. #2-Nikon cameras' HDMI out blacks out for a few seconds after stopping recording, this is an annoyance as wireless transmitters also black out. You have to wait a few seconds for picture to come back up, The creates an annoyance on set, time wasted, and have to make up excuses for the camera to the client. Not professional. #3-Need S&Q slow motion: clients are used to seeing the result of filming slow motion right away during playback. With Z8/Z9, there are only a few HD settings one can playback slightly slower and not exact. It would be great to be able to playback footage shot at 60 fps playback at 24 fps. #4- Add shutter angle**. These 4 things, or at least first 3, are all the Z8/Z9 need to be fantastic cameras and replace my FX6/FX3 cameras on set. At the moment, with using the Z cameras there are a lot of compromises one has to make compared to Sony or other brands. This sucks because I believe Nikon had the most Arri-like image of all the mirrorless cameras.
Hmm, d19 doesn't work for me. Half-pressing the shutter doesn't end zoom in MF for me, regardless of whether this is ON or OFF.
This only works if you have enlarged the viewfinder image before, for example to 200%.
@ Jörg, wtf, bist du das? Wir kennen uns doch aus COI-Zeiten? Gruß Maik :-)
Dear Ricci, I would like to know the mysterious reason why Nikon did not implement Pixel Shift Shooting also in the Z9 with this firmware update... 🤔🤔🤔
3:30. Sorry but no, if you change shooting bank in photo also changes recording bank in video, and obviously same in the opposite way. Besides you can not name the banks differently. So no, they are not independent. Should be fixed.
Keep upgrading the Z9!!! Lovely work!!
No pixel shift? :(
Please Nikon, pre capture RAW even at 10FPS!
No píxel shift???
Open Gate Video / Anamorphic Desqueeze ? 🤔
Where is the Z6iii? ☹️
