- Ge Wang is an assistant professor at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA).
His research focuses on programming languages and interactive software design for computer music, mobile and social music, laptop orchestras and education at the intersection of computer science and music. Wang is the author of the ChucK audio programming language, as well as the founding director of the Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk) and the Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra (MoPhO). He is also the co-founder of Smule (which makes social music making apps and has over 100 million users) and the designer of the iPhone's Ocarina and Magic Piano.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
"It crashes equally well on all modern operation systems" I already liked this guy at this point xD
Yea, there were some awesome jokes in his speech :)
After 20 years of tech.. finally a guy that understands that tech is a tool and not meant to stand on its own.
as soon as he played them singing together I was hit by a massive wave of joy and chills. so epic, a world to live in
The little minimalist pieces of music played by global users of Ocarina sound so otherworldly and lonely, like little candles flickering in the night far away from another. Such a lovely presentation! Much to think about.
"What DAW do you use?"
"Actually I code it"
You can code all you want, and of course the DAW is just code at the end of the day, but it's always going to be a heck of a lot easier to mix with a DAW than via coding.
Taking a picture of someone with a camera is easier than drawing a portrait of them....
Real musicians program their music in pure binary machine code...
Lol.
oh my god, i love companys that only have a general idea of what there doing
"we create... computer... music... things"
Companies and the're. But yes, got to love the people!!
It's not that they don't know what they are doing. It is that it is a struggle to explain it to people who are not specialists in the field, in a way that they would understand. Also, this field of study is so new, and crosses boundaries between disciplines. So it is difficult to summarize with just two words "computer music", without meaning being lost between communicators. That is why this talk is focused on broadening the definition and explaining just a few of the basics.
Wian Smit they're
@@HighlandViolinist - only been going since 1951 - F-R-E-S-H
Now I finally understand how Smule is a genuinely fun app to play around with, no wonder when it's partially driven by a guy with such passion for the art of music, wonderful stuff
I like this guy. :) Good heart, doing it for the right reasons.
3:50 best soundtrack to have playing when a cop pulls you over :D
What.? He invented smule? Damn. I used to love smule magic piano. I had no idea he invented it. He's a clever dude
Back Country Pastimes woahh I didn’t get into that part yet, that’s insane!! I used to use that app growing up all the time
ahh dude i cried a little bit when i saw everyone singing "Lean On Me." This was an exceptionally well done TEDx Talk from an Exceptionally beautiful soul.
I met him in the past at the ICMC. He is a very kind person and fantastic teacher. He is a great addition to CCRMA research team.
Makes me happy that people like Ge Wang not only exist, but teach and share. There's hope for us still.
FINALLY...a Tedx that doesn't make me want to make me kill myself.
This guy knows his shit.
Computer music, because sometimes my computer gets bored doing it's every day tasks and needs a soundtrack to help it get through an otherwise tedious day.
Ge Wang in Mandarin actually means The King of Songs
A.J.M Compositions 歌王?
JCI1990
Ge=song
Wang=king
Translation quite often ends up with different word counts for different phrases. Even ones of just two words.
one word can easily mean more than one word in another language. souka (japanese) means "I see" or "I understand". Arigatou means "thank you". ore wa kowai desu means "I'm scared".
JCI1990 not really, but shall we be technical The King of Songs is just 2 words in English.
The is just a subject header specifying a word as a certain subject.
of is a preposition. Without The and of, the word order changes into Song King, which literally has the same meaning in English.
and Ge Wang is Song King and therefore the meaning is the same, now you have to acknowledge that Mandarin Chinese doesn't have plurality or prepositions.
So Ge Wang could have more meanings.
Song King
The King of Songs, Kings of Song, King of Song, The Kings of Songs.
Shoutouts to the guy he listened in on with the Ocarina app whose username was Majora
wtf he gets to the part where he says he created Smule, and I'm like holy fuck
Lmao same!!
y
Ikr wtf seriously
Wow, tears at that "Lean on Me" rendition.
Thanks Ge Wang, brillant use of the computer to get people to work and play together. Music certainly brings folks together and the potential for world peace is almost out there.
This guy is just cool, his voice, he is funny and smart.
Smule makes such creative and fun apps for expressing music, which anyone with a little desire can express themselves without having to learn a traditional instrument
Invented Smule... occupies my evening time playing Magic piano. Nice and respect.
I like this guy too, he loves is art and makes it positively contagious
jeez he has had quite some success. I remember playing the Smule Magic Piano app back in the days.
i just downloaded ocarina. it is actually very cool to listen to other people all over the world play
After seeing Chuck I am so happy that Max MSP is a visual based language.
cried at the at... life is amazing..
An improved, computer-enhanced Theremin with many possible voices!! Great!
Omg. Lean on Me at the end game me chills. I want to GET THAT APP!
Excellent talk amazing work done .
Wow, that sample at about 10 minutes is awesome. It could be that artists could do two things at a time: expressing something physically and create their musid through that expression. I would love to see something like that.
Haha, i can't seem to help but be impressed. I would consider that mobile app an instrument ... think of the possibilities. You'd have an ocarina wherever you go. =)
I think it's computer aided music. A mixture of both. The good old symphony made with new possibilities. It's beautiful. =)
Wang: This thing pulls sound out of the ground.
Me: Oh.
Thing: wwWAAAAaaaAAAOOOOOWWWHHHHhh
Me: *o h.*
Genius! And Ge Wang has a GREAT EAR and aesthetic
Wow! that was amazing. I was biased about computers making music, but this is a whole different kettle of fish. Thank you.
Sadly the Ocarina is not on android. But they do have as of this post Sing!, Magic Piano, AutoRap and Songify.
this is absolutely amazing!
_Amazing, I believe I found this at the right time. Thank you Professor Wang+
Could you explain in more detail how it works for the smartphone? Thanks in advance.
7:19 is that you R2?
Thanks for making me blow air out of my nose harder than usual :)
OMFG That was to funny I dropped my fucking cereal Xd
Knew I wasn't the only one to hear it.
I was hoping he would recognize that
Aahhhh! I'm not the only one who noticed that:D
i love his definition of computer music!!!!
How a nice and impressive lecture! I'm a teacher in korea at Seoul electronic high school. I teach social studies and also music for school group sound band.
I will share story with my students^^ I hope someday you and I and my student would talk about computer music and human together!
Anyone know where I could get one of those golf-game-track-string-things/ how I might go about making one? Thanks :)
7:18 sounds like the instrument used for the hook on Jack U's "Where Are U Now" song.
+MothaFxck That's actually not an insturment used in that song, it's Justin's vocals with tons of editing.
Grays0n Y0rk It's still an instrument. Even synths are instruments.
MothaFxck I know, just saying that it was made off of his voice.
Grays0n Y0rk Well, thanks for letting me know that. I didn't know it was made from his voice. That's cool. :)
It sounds like R2D2
Beautiful presentation
Great presentation! Need to find that app now lol
Does anyone know what Bach melody that is around 11:17?
Music & Computer Skills both combined, this is the Ultimate Asian xD
How many people work in the cxustomer service department at Smule? Why no customer service department number at Smule?
Wanting to learn this. Awesome stuff.
Hi do anyone knows the title of the early intro music, thanks !!;)
IS the ocarina app available for driods ?
laptop orchestras ! This is sooo cool !
Is there also an app for the saxophone for Android?
love your work!!
This guy is a genius! Why when I check Smule "about us", only business looking people appear and there is no trace of this brilliant guy?
20 Years ago a "Stanford Laptop orchestra" would have been laughed at 100 times over
Huh? Maybe the Stanford part of it.
I mean, in 1997, it wasn't all THAT glamorous and easy, but it marks the year when Jeskola Buzz was released, and it didn't run too badly on that Pentium MMX laptop you could get back then.
Why aren't people like this seen all over your FB and SM newsfeeds????
I don't know what "SM" is but if FB means facebook, it's because nobody ever reads it anyway, unless it's photos of your food.
very lovely talk
I love this. Technology to become more human. The best things always come in opposites.
¡¡¡Qué pasada!!! Gracias
Asian Keanu Reeves anyone?
Well i'm sorry, but i'm glad you see the similarity XD
Keanu is already part asian :)
nah, I had coffee with Keanu once and this guy rules way harder...
WIthin 30 seconds I made the same comparison and scrolled down and happy to see this is top comment
Low rent Steve Aoki
That would be so perfect as a tool for the creation of ambience or horror themes!
This is not computer music, it is still human expression, just using a different medium. It is a soft synth with a different interface.
What music is on the start?
All instruments = toys :) Music is Play, "Playing Music".
Google Play
where can I find this nice ocarina app?
would help if he had placed the string device closer to the laptop...
AMAZING ! ♡♡♡
this is a great talk
where do i get that golf thing?!
Can you create the "Electronic Tonalities" of Louis and Bebe Barron in the movie FORBIDDEN PLANET? They were true electronic music creators not in any way limited by any human instrument. I would like to hear more of this kind of "music" beyond what was in the movie. There must be millions of possible sounds and even symphonies that would fit in with their style of work. Maybe it could be analyzed and then expanded???
so he made an ocarina for a phone? pretty cool
Could Rhubarb be played with a laptop orchestra?
steve aoki before the fame
Is this the dude from E3 like a few years back?
I loved the drone sound O.O
10.55 is just great
OH MY GOD WHAT THIS IS A GUY WHO HELPED MADE SMULE
wait what he created smule?????? I love this guy
really cool!
When the title says computer music, I was thinking something closer to Vocaloid.
what software is this?
That is so inspirational :)
>GameTrak
I think I still have one of those lying around... never once used it though XD
Anyone know the name of the Bach piece?
ave maria
I'm not sure if i get the 1st word right but does he call it CANONICAL computer music ?
what programming language is he using?
THIS IS SO FREAKING COOL!!!!
7:19 R2D2 here !
This is amazing.
this guy is going to save the world from skynet 11.1.2 using music
Really cool. Wish I knew just how to produce my own music. I always gotta go to the studio. Anyone can recommend the best program/ course for not so tech clever people?
Cole van dais FL STUDIO is very beginner friendly
Thank you, I'll check it out. Is it for MAC?
I'm not sure. I don't see why it wouldn't be. I think Macs come with garageband preinstalled. Have you not tried that?
this dude is a genious!!!
"human music, i like it"
I've been using smile for the longest time now
wow would be great for tai chi masters, sound to there movements
Ge Wang Rig a Dinga Dong, funny sounds I like to make after I wake up!
super awesome
Any Tipper fans here?
He's at the forefront of "computer music" if you haven't heard of him.
Tipper is so crazy. Saw him at Shamb with Android Jones. Loved every second of it.
+schamp6 love tipper all yall check out his mix "Tip Hop" !
+schamp6 Tipper is Life. Tipper is Love.
+schamp6 What's the best album to introduce me to his work?
+Peleg Tsadok his album Broken Soul Jambouree is something anyone can enjoy. He has a wide range of styles, from weird to ambient to heavy bass to even weirder. Keep in mind, he's a true producer, most everything you hear was made from scratch.
Hmm, Computer Music. I like it.
