Great overview, Gordon. The 40mp sensor has another advantage -- similar to the Leica Q2 -- which is the ability to crop in-camera to stretch out the potential focal lengths albeit sacrificing megapixels in the resulting images. Combining this with the TC add-on lens extends the capability of the camera so that it can give you up to 100mm shots (of 10mp size). I've heard that Fujifilm includes some menu options to facilitate the cropping like the Q2. It would be great if you can explore the potential of this cropping feature in a future video.
Yep, it will be interesting to see how well the crop mode works. I think 50mm equiv crop will be useful since you get about 19 - 20 mp. Sure we can just crop in post, but composing in crop is nice.
In theory, but the pixel density is significantly more on the 40mp APSC v.s. Full frame on the Leica. This means that you only have so much latitude for cropping before noise becomes obvious and problematic. IMHO 40mp on APSC is pushing the scope of what is desirable for the form factor. Seeing how poorly indoor photos turn out from the X100v is what made me go for a Canon g1X instead.
That was a very impressive "first look" video which was very informative indeed. Gave me all the salient info especially regarding the new image stabilisation which you will definitely need with a move to a 40Mp sensor.
The only thing worth the upgrade is the ibis. I don’t think you need the 40mp over 26mp on a camera like this. The Ibis though - that’s a worth some thinking.

4:30 I never used the OVF on any X100 I owned either. I didn't see the point, since I can see the live exposure when using the EVF. Yes, I understand some people just like to be able to see the 'real world' and want to use the OVF, but to me it's a bit pointless. Getting the exposure the closest to what I want in-camera is the most important thing to me (and the framing I see in the EVF is what I get on the final image also, so no looking for framing lines). To me the OVF is more of a gimmick than something that's really needed. It's only needed as a personal preference, nothing more. A good EVF is much more useful/practical overall. And yes, as you mentioned the camera would be made less complex without adding the OVF option (and probably less expensive as you mentioned). To me the OVF is all cons and no pros. I doubt they'll want to bother with an EVF only version if they do keep an OVF available. I'd say keep the OVF as an option on the X-Pro line and forget it/remove it on the X100 line.
I am glad that Fujifilm kept the hybird viewfinder. I like the hybrid viewfinder. Like a LEICA, it does not put a layer of abstraction between you and the subject. It doesn't go blank during the decisive moment, as Cartier-Bresson would say.
Thanks for the preview Gordon! Lots of other reviewers have mentioned as well that IBIS is not as effective with the OVF in use vs the EVF. Can you share any specifics?
IBIS only shows the steadier view when composing electronically, so on the screen and EVF. It's still working with OVF, but you won't see it when composing. This in turn may make you hold the camera differently, but the end result should be the same.
@@thejerrycliff Thanks, I guess I've waited this long so I can keep waiting. As good as the VI is, I won't spend that much on both an X100 and an X-Pro.
WOW! The most impressive thing is how did they manage to make it record and hour of 4K footage without overheating? Because mine X100V can handle about 5-7 mins before turning off:))
Excellent overview review. Thank you. I already pre-ordered one - the first time I've been tempted by the X100 series. I've had 3 in the XT series, currently use the X-T5 for "serious" work, but use and enjoy a Sony X100 VII for walking-around shooting of both photos and video. I recently tried a Panasonic LX10 and liked the photo qualities, but the lack of a viewfinder, and dust on the sensor were a turnoff (despite being able to take it apart and clean it). We shall see what I end up keeping!
@@cameralabs Will do. By the way, I just got an email from B & H Photo in New York that the X100 VI that I pre-ordered won't be available until after March: "The response to this new camera launch has been tremendous and well in excess of Fujifilm’s projections. We shipped out the first delivery of the X100VI on February 28th and have been working closely with Fujifilm to secure additional inventory to fill your order as quickly as possible. While we expect to receive additional inventory in March, based on Fujifilm’s projections, we will not have sufficient inventory to fill your order in March. We will update you as soon as we receive additional information from Fujifilm, which we hope to have within the next two weeks. Please note that both the Silver and Black versions of the X100VI are similarly affected. Also please note that this information is subject to change if Fujifilm’s shipping calendar changes."
@@cameralabs Thanks - not that I want to discourage anyone from ordering - I think they should, and put the screws to Fujifilm to deliver! B & H DOES NOT CHARGE UNTIL IT SHIPS.
@@ericplatt6884 I heard this morning that their global production capacity is 15000 a month and they're already sold several month's worth. So some later orders could be delayed until Summer, but hopefully capacity will meet demand by then and they'll become easier to buy in the second half of 24.
Is it just me or did Fuji just passed up multiple opportunities to call this something clever like the "X100 VID", "X100 ViDEO" or "X100 VIS" as this sounds like a refresh of the X100 V.... well on paper so far.
Thank you for the preview as good as a review. My main buying point would be hobby architecture photography, ease of carry and use, but I would also use this for TH-cam live videos. Does it overheat in long video shoots? I mean connected to a Type-C USB and HDMI, if the livestream goes too long, does it shut down?
I tried a quick livestream over USB C for you. The camera is also powered by the computer and outputs 1080 60p over USB c in webcam mode. When recording video, I got 1.25hrs of 1080 without overheating, and it was the battery that ended it. So I would hope for at least this in webcam mode

@@cameralabs thank you, I really appreciate your effort.
What a fun camera, thank you for the thorough review. Would love to see a comparison between X100VI and a Sony crop sensor with a Sony 6700 with a 24mm f2.8 G lens. Yes, I know they are different, but I think this is a decision many Sony shooters would make.
If I were in the market for an X-100, this would be it. That said, I am an X-Pro fanboy and least until the end of the year, I am going to hold out for an X-Pro 4, if by then nothing is announced on a ‘4’, I might pick up a 100VI.
I have an x100s that I still use with off camera flash because of its awesome leaf shutter. Does this new one still have a leaf shutter? I’m kind of out of the loop but if it doesn’t then is high speed flash sync achievable with whatever new technology is available now?
Hey @cameralabs Does the IBIS and internal ND work simultaneously in video? If so, that is an extremely rare combination. I have watched 5 reviews now have haven't heard anyone talk about it. Thanks for another great review.
@@cameralabs I dont think theres necessarily a technical reason they wouldnt work except for it's just that rare of a combination for video lol it's like a dream combination, but typically it's been you get one, or the other (IBIS vs Internal NDs). I think the Sony Burano has both maybe and it's like a $25k cinema camera lol
@@cameralabs Thanks for the reply. Cine D and BHPhoto responded to my question saying that they will work at the same time for video. Will look forward to your full review to see it demonstrated. I also hope Lumix will add this combo to future cameras.
Cheers Gordon, I pulled the trigger on what has historically been the camera I’ve enjoyed more than any other. It just makes you want to shoot it more often regardless of focal length restrictions. Looking back through my X100V shots I can see that high iso was the biggest compromise to image quality and can agree that thanks to IBIS being able to shoot static objects at lower ISO’s will really elevate output dramatically in some circumstances. Now I wonder if the faster processor will improve the pano mode? Any thoughts?
Great video as always! I have one question for the next video: does it have the same old school, noisy focusing motor as the X100V? I'm interested in seeing if the in-camera audio is still unuseable due to the focusing noise, or if they've made any improvements. Also a head to head single point AF speed comparison would be nice.
13:55 IBIS is everything. Those X100V owners will need to swallow their pride now - telling everyone you do not need IBIS with X100V or even the VI. Fanboyism at its finest. Now, will try to save money for this great camera 😉
I'm usually the one to be the negative Nancy poking holes in new releases and I'm not a Fuji fan by any means - but this actually seems like a very appealing little camera.
Oh wow, THANK YOU so much for showing the actual difference between 26mp and 40mp. Good to know there is an actual difference. I've seen some claims there wasn't much difference really, but the 40mp image looks very noticeably clearer and more detailed in your comparison at 8:29.
Looks like a great camera, the only thing I don't like is that it's 40MP because it doesn't really resolve much more than the previous model. Larger files but not more true resolution.
always amazed at prices these days . $1600 or £1600 ! at the exchange rate today it should equate to about £1260. still out of my price range but being ripped of for the extra would really sting.
If you want to fund the the VI with the V sale, I’d suggest doing it quickly. My guess is the X100v premium is going to disappear quickly. You can’t steal in slow motion. Good luck with your decision. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Thanks Gordon, Great review as always. As I am, like you a long term X100V owner, do you think it would be worth upgrading? The IBIS does sort of sway me. Any thoughts ? cheers mate.
If you intend to shoot video, then yes, definitely, but if not, then less reason to upgrade I'd say. Unless you find the 26mp images too low res. I find them fine.
Good points, but I think the Ibis will do it for me. I have one on pre order as I can get a good price for the V so the upgrade is not too expensive then. Thanks again. 👍
A little on the pricey side for something really only suitable for taking casual snaps. The 40mp resolution is just another marketing gimmick and won’t magically enable the output from this to get anywhere close to the image quality of modern mirrorless F.F gear at a similar price point, especially in more difficult light, using higher ISO’s. If compact size is the priority there’s plenty of much cheaper crop sensor options that will do the job just as well - but hey, if people want to throw their money away 😊
Superb first-looks review. Thank you. In your detailed review, please test the accuracy and sharpness of people eye detect auto focus. There have been some reviews of other cameras with the new sensor that found eye focus is not critically sharp, especially in comparison to Canon and Sony. Thanks.
Very impressive specs and price…seems like a great value. But I prefer the simpler design of Leica Q series. That said, even kitted out, it is only 1/3 to less than 1/2 of a Leica.
From what I've read ... 23 = 35mm equivalent 40 MP, croping to 50mm equivalent goes down to 25 MP, then croping to 70mm equivalent goes way down to 10 MP ... may as well get a smart phone? Am I getting this right? I will not get one if this is the case. Am I seeing this wrong?
Hi, I've recently become reunited with my old Fujifilm X10 but forgot that it doesn't have a double-exposure capability (which my F770EXR does!) - modern in-camera multiple exposure features are a lot more sophisticated nowadays though, with more overlay frames and choices of compositing modes and I think having a well developed multiple exposure compositing feature in-camera is very much the mark of a camera aimed at creativity and artistry (so not Sony then!) - does this new X100IIIIX have a good suite of in-camera multiple exposure offerings?
Really good review, as always. Can I make you aware if you aren’t, or if you have any control, but 2 adverts before you start and then more every 4 minutes! It really breaks the flow ☹️
The ads are placed by TH-cam and vary on region, so I have little control over them. They do however fund my job, so are a necessary part of making videos unless enough people are willing to pay a subs fee or a regular patreon.
I think a comparison between this and plausible alternatives would be intere4sting. I have an OM-D E-M1x. Good camera, but not the lightest.. I have a G 9. Good camera, lighter than the Olympus, but still not small. For me, this would be a contender for use when I walk around, for serious but not serious photography. This could be a contender, compatibility with my other cameras doesn't matter, thouhg I might have some batteries for this, the battery model number looks familiar. For me, if this is a contender, what else is there? How do they stack up against smaller mirrorless ILCs? A separate matter, how does X-Trans stack up against other smaller mirrorless cameras, those that have sensor-shift high resolution. One of the advantages I have seen touted for those is improved colour rendition, as is claimed for X-Trans (and Foveon.) 40 megapixels in a single sensor readout is one advantage here,
thanks for the video Mr Laing, im still trynig to buy a XE4, i want to ask you something, if you could help me i would aprreciate it, im close to buy my first camera, and i can decide betwen the Z50 or the XE4 both are cameras that i like the desing, the Z50 can be buy on my country, the XE4 i have to import it from the US. for a person that is a photography entusiast and a newbie on which of those 2 camera you recomend? for provide more information, i would like to shoot some macro, and some street photogrpahy too also some ocasional portraits. i would like to try some 40mm lens or a 27 mm and been on a tropical country is not a bad aidea to have a telephoto lens.
Have you ever notice the x100v miss focuses ? I wonder if its my copy, I love mine except for that big inconvinience and wonder if i should upgrade if this one is realible . Thanks
My X100v misses focus if I rush it, especially in AF-C. I shoot it in AF-S and set my focus settings right depending on what I'm using it for :) There's definitely some playing around to get it right I think! I highly doubt it's your copy, the AF is kinda slow if you step over from anything quicker. I kinda love that about it.
@@cameralabs It is only a cosmetic preference. I prefer my bodies black. Unfortunately, a black body doesn’t deliver B&W performance. I don’t believe a black body camouflages the body. It’s all about what floats your boat. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Thanks. Only u explained about video features in full compare to others. Can u pls tell us wether x100vi overheats in 4kHQ mode? What is the recording limit? Can we use this for video recording in studio for 1hour continous in highest quality.
Wish they literally fixed most important problem with v. The battery(i would have happily accepted slightly thicker body. 150-200 photos is nothing. Also the uhs1 sd, old ass lcd, no 3.5mm (so carry adapter which vanishes any Benoit of the size.) also to lesser extent but the same buffer & 40mp 88mb raw's & slow ass uhs1 all make the occasional burst shooting almost impossible.

They need to return to that 1934 logo -- it's exquisite! Now where's my X-Pro4?
At least a year away
@@thejerrycliff Thanks, I guess I've waited this long so I can keep waiting. As good as the VI is, I won't spend that much on both an X100 and an X-Pro.
@@fellowcitizen yeah we have a year to save, now Ricoh just need to hold off that GRIV for a bit…
I was told at Wex that the "V" was the 4th edition of this model. So this is the "V" mark 1. I have pre ordered one as I have never loved my XT-4
There was the X100, X100S, X100T, X100F, then X100V and now X100 VI, so the V was the fifth model. Not sure why WEX told you it was the fourth.
If you consider it an X-T5 with built-in lens and optical viewfinder, the price seems ok.
WOW! The most impressive thing is how did they manage to make it record and hour of 4K footage without overheating? Because mine X100V can handle about 5-7 mins before turning off:))
Yeah I know! I filmed most of the b-roll with the X100 V and had to keep stopping to let it cool down!
Thank you for the image comparison! Most early reviews skipped on that
12:18 a bit of Gordon Laing serenity. Float on!
Thanks, please also check out my in-depth photography review published yesterday!
@@cameralabs Will do. By the way, I just got an email from B & H Photo in New York that the X100 VI that I pre-ordered won't be available until after March:
"The response to this new camera launch has been tremendous and well in excess of Fujifilm’s projections.
@@ericplatt6884 I hope you get it soon, thanks for the update.
Best video on the x100vi so far. I am glad I bought one to replace my x100v.
Thanks, hope you got in the queue in time!
Just like that the V became the legendary last made in Japan camera.
Main thing I'm interested in is how well the extra mp resolve. Please update us with more examples 😮
Will do!
Is it just me or did Fuji just passed up multiple opportunities to call this something clever like the "X100 VID", "X100 ViDEO" or "X100 VIS" as this sounds like a refresh of the X100 V.... well on paper so far.
If you look at previous models, the number of updates are similar
Great first impressions! Does the internal camera mic pick up the lens autofocus on video
Great question! The video features with ibis sounds great, but at least in the x100v it has sort of a whirry AF noise
I'll test that in a quieter environment for you in my final review
@@cameralabsIt still has the noise like in the x100v from what reviews says
Oh man, I know I shouldn't but I am tempted by that special edition
All key aspects covered nicely, thanks ❤
An interesting offering from Fuji, and proof that ibis can fit into a camera taking up only 2mm! Amazing
Yes, it's pretty impressive!
There will surely be a new xpro but maybe they will wait for the next sensor refresh
I have an x100s that I still use with off camera flash because of its awesome leaf shutter. Does this new one still have a leaf shutter? I’m kind of out of the loop but if it doesn’t then is high speed flash sync achievable with whatever new technology is available now?
Yep, they all have a leaf shutter!
Hey @cameralabs Does the IBIS and internal ND work simultaneously in video? If so, that is an extremely rare combination. I have watched 5 reviews now have haven't heard anyone talk about it. Thanks for another great review.
I hadn't even thought of that 😮 hoping more cameras can work in that combination that would be awesome
They should do, I'll give it a go, no reason why they wouldn't?
@@cameralabs I dont think theres necessarily a technical reason they wouldnt work except for it's just that rare of a combination for video lol it's like a dream combination, but typically it's been you get one, or the other (IBIS vs Internal NDs). I think the Sony Burano has both maybe and it's like a $25k cinema camera lol
@@cameralabs Thanks for the reply. Cine D and BHPhoto responded to my question saying that they will work at the same time for video. Will look forward to your full review to see it demonstrated. I also hope Lumix will add this combo to future cameras.
A brilliant and detailed review. I feel quite underwhelmed by X100 VI compared to V.
Imagine $1,600 for a point and shoot camera. Maybe $700.
@@bondgabebond4907 Agreed!
My gosh, they finally implemented 4:3 crop, I'm crying with my x-t3 and hoping that they can introduce that with firmware update 😭
Waiting for the x100v prices to come down to earth.
I just got one for $850 before tax
Cheers Gordon, I pulled the trigger on what has historically been the camera I’ve enjoyed more than any other. It just makes you want to shoot it more often regardless of focal length restrictions.
Looking back through my X100V shots I can see that high iso was the biggest compromise to image quality and can agree that thanks to IBIS being able to shoot static objects at lower ISO’s will really elevate output dramatically in some circumstances.
Now I wonder if the faster processor will improve the pano mode? Any thoughts?
I'll be testing that
I'm surprised by how unnoticeable the improvement to 40MP is!
It's not a huge step in linear resolution.
Lens does not resolve the additional megapixels. In both cases you are limited to what the lens can give.
@@cameralabs that reveals quite a bit about the other reviews out there suggesting how big that step up is
Great video as always! I have one question for the next video: does it have the same old school, noisy focusing motor as the X100V? I'm interested in seeing if the in-camera audio is still unuseable due to the focusing noise, or if they've made any improvements. Also a head to head single point AF speed comparison would be nice.
Yep, I want to compare the AF speed, although anecdotally it feels - and sounds - very similar.
Yes
In every circumstance I would prefer my little Olympus EM10 with interchangeable lens over this Fuji. But I guess most people would choose otherwise.
13:55 IBIS is everything. Those X100V owners will need to swallow their pride now - telling everyone you do not need IBIS with X100V or even the VI. Fanboyism at its finest.
Now, will try to save money for this great camera 😉
I don't recall you mentioning the built in ND filter? Is it still there or was it removed to make room for the IBIS?
Same nd filter that’s on the v
Yep, same 4 stop ND as X100V
I’m super hyped about the hype for this hyped up hype. So hyped!
Hyyyyyyype!
I'm usually the one to be the negative Nancy poking holes in new releases and I'm not a Fuji fan by any means - but this actually seems like a very appealing little camera.
thanks gordon ,have 100v,thinking ovrt upgrading
Excellent review! Many thanks.
Next time you are in Japan, you should come down to Okinawa and experience some of the island life
Would LOVE to visit Okinawa!
So are you going to upgrade? And do you think the IBIS unit will render this less robust.
I think the V is still fine for my needs, although I would enjoy having the video capabilities of this one.
@@cameralabs I’m coming to the same conclusion and I don’t shoot video.
Oh wow, THANK YOU so much for showing the actual difference between 26mp and 40mp. Good to know there is an actual difference. I've seen some claims there wasn't much difference really, but the 40mp image looks very noticeably clearer and more detailed in your comparison at 8:29.
I know you said it wasn't a big difference, but I'm viewing on a 4K 48 inch OLED and the 40mp images do look noticeably better to me.
@@tappersreviews4677 it's definitely resolving more, but I did have to zoom in a lot to show it! Glad you're watching on a big screen!
Also it depends on the lens, like XF 23mm f/1.4. 40mp is good for crop little more
16 very effectively used minutes 👍
Looks like a great camera, the only thing I don't like is that it's 40MP because it doesn't really resolve much more than the previous model. Larger files but not more true resolution.
Your comment makes no sense whatsoever!
If compare the low light image quality between V & VI, which one is better?
I'll be testing that in my final review.
@@cameralabsgreat thanks 🙏
always amazed at prices these days . $1600 or £1600 ! at the exchange rate today it should equate to about £1260. still out of my price range but being ripped of for the extra would really sting.
The US prices never include tax, whereas ours include 20% VAT. Plus exchange rate differences and volume differences.
How many film recipes are you able to have on the VI?
In the petapixel review he mentioned the number 20
I just got a x100v for 1300€. Should I stick with it or sell it and get the new one? Package is still unopened.
If you want to fund the the VI with the V sale, I’d suggest doing it quickly. My guess is the X100v premium is going to disappear quickly. You can’t steal in slow motion. Good luck with your decision.

For how much are yoy gonna sell it?@@MarkThomas1
Thanks.
Will do
Very impressive specs and price…seems like a great value. But I prefer the simpler design of Leica Q series. That said, even kitted out, it is only 1/3 to less than 1/2 of a Leica.
Gordon, can you tell what bag that is at 00:18? Looks nice for small cameras.
Sure thing, it's an Eastpak The One. See my X100 v long term test
Terrific detail. Thanks so much.
It's a fixed lens, so yes, you'd be cropping the image to simulate a longer lens. Same for any fixed lens camera
Good question, I'll try to include something about this on my next video
What about the "touch to track" function? Did you manage to test it in video? That's a long waited feature and nobody talks about it. Thanks!
I will try that properly in my follow up

There the exact same lol just colour difference
The build and finish feel the same, so it's a colour preference.
@@cameralabs It is only a cosmetic preference. I prefer my bodies black. Unfortunately, a black body doesn’t deliver B&W performance. I don’t believe a black body camouflages the body. It’s all about what floats your boat.
