      I can understand people may have preferences on manufacture locations, but I still don’t think people would hang onto something mass produced like the x100v as collectibles for the long run (except with probably Leica) when they are upgrading to the x100vi.
      If I were you, I would start to keep an eye out from now until the summer this year for a nice preowned copy of the x100v. Best of luck! An used x100v will probably still run you $1k though, considering the new x100vi will be $1600 before tax in the US.

    $1600 is not super close but beginning to encroach on the ZF with 40/2 at $2200. Some people may value the 40mp more, some people may value interchangeable lenses and a full frame sensor more. It’ll be interesting to see how it does in sales. Bummed about production moving to China though.

    • @Tharrel
      @Tharrel 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your comment is quite telling in what you prefer 😉. People who will prefer x100 will do so more for the form factor, feel, look, and of course the film simulations, which are way better than any color profile available on the market (highly subjective ofc). Either way, the 40MP is just a cherry on top

    Another honest and thorough review that touched on some things others haven't. What you didn't cover and what I am curious about is the high ISO performance of the new sensor. Theoretically, the smaller pixel pitch should create more noise, however, I don't know whether other sensor tech mitigates this.
    As an aside regarding price, you could get an ILC Nikon Z5 with the Nikkor Z 40mm f2 pancake for about $1,300 on sale (keeping in mind the various tradeoffs, of course.)

    • @USGrant21st
      @USGrant21st 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Z5 with 40/2 is a totally different beast. But Zfc, or Z50, or Z30 with 24/1.7 is. It's a bit bigger, weight is pretty much the same, but it feels better in hand. Going with Nikon you would save money, and in my view image quality is also better.

    • @yanniobkirk5744
      @yanniobkirk5744 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Image sensor size largely determines overall image noise.
      26mp vs 40mp is irrelevant here. Size the images the same and the noise will be about the same.
      Higher mp images will fare better with AI noise reduction algorithms. The 40mp sensor has better color reproduction due to more pixels going through the demosaicing process.
      It's really hard to find the downside of Fuji's 40mp sensor. The lenses may not be good enough to resolve all 40mp but you are never worse off than if they used the old 26mp sensor.

    Great review! The improved AF and IBIS is a nice addition. I agree that the lens does need to be upgraded to resolve better with the 40mp sensor and possibly have a better physical focusing motor, which I feel could bottleneck the AF improvements in software. Does the X100VI still have the digital teleconverter feature? I use it a lot on the X100V. Interestingly, it doesn't crop the image resolution, but applies digital upscaling I believe so the image resolution remains the same but reduced sharpness. I wonder if it's any different with the new model's sensor being 40mp.

    5:37 "Increasing resolution of the sensor doesn't always lead to more fine detail"
    Yes and no.
    As a matter of the fundamental physics of light, "image sharpness" is always the combined average of both the sensor and the lens, therefore, more resolution does in fact always lead to higher image sharpness.
    However, even if it is "theoretically" possible to double the LP/mm resolved in a final image by increasing sensor resolution, you can't fix the "character" of a lens by changing the sensor.
    Contrast, distortion, chromatic aberration, a low quality lens will always look low quality even if you use a "Gigapixel" resolution sensor.

Admittedly, like any lens out there it could be in that one case that it’s a mfg flaw but I’ve seen other comments that some returned or sold there V over a lack of clarity. There is still a lot of appeal in the X100 but to your point, a massive jump in pixels should be accompanied by an equal jump in lens clarity. My Ricoh absolutely blew me away with the sharpness and that’s the standard I hold the Fuji to. Regardless, I appreciate the honesty in your reviews. Some are clearly towing the manufacturers line to maintain self interest.

    If resolution wasn't important we would be stuck with 8MP sensors to this day!
    Cropping power without losing quality is essential, even for personal and social media photography.
    It's really strange that so many people are against this just because of the stupid MegaPixel race of the past.
    As long as performance is great, more megapixels is ALWAYS better.
    It would be nice if all cameras came with pixel binning technology so that files could be smaller and processing faster for those who need it, or to reduce noise in low light situations like some smartphones do and like Leica does on the M11 if I'm not mistaken.

If this camera is not perfect then what about a film camera from 50 years ago which is vastly inferior? And yet there are masterpieces being taken still with those cameras. It's important not to fuel this global consumer racket and focus on the art.

    Matt,
    Thanks for the first rate review but I have mixed feelings about this camera. I bought into Fujifilm for the first time last year with the XS20. I wanted a light, travel friendly and versatile camera and the one I bought does the job brilliantly. Mine came with a standard 18-55mm f2.8 lens and as a kit it was £1500, less than the X100vi. The XS20 looks good. It is easy to use and to carry. It produces first rate images and I am delighted with it. So, why would I buy the X100vi with its fixed 35mm lens and non flip out screen - no flash - sub par video and limited battery? Answer - I won’t. I get the aesthetics. It looks great and maybe that’s it appeal. Gen Z like it’s ‘retro’ styling. If that encourages them to pick up a camera instead of a smart phone - terrific. But honestly, there are better performing cameras for the same price out there and I am very happy with mine.

    Great as always, i sold my 100V because of the lens, i do not know what others photographers think, but when i compared it with Nikon fc with the kit lens i was surprised by the resulite, i did not find the 100V lens that sharp, and now with your comparison the different i very clear the 100V lens need to be upgraded other wise this camera will be worthless, that my personal opinion.

They should have kept the old sensor with 26MP and just attach a better lens to it. The new XF 23/1.4 LM WR blows the lens in the X100V and VI out of the water. Even my Ricoh GR3 and 3X are better.

    I don't know exactly what it is, but to me the first X100 with its mere 12mp sensor, has something that sadly was gone or not replicated in all it's successors. Even the pro versions do not have that Oempf. It simply translates light regardless of all tech specs to a more photographic image. Not fully sure I tested it with my students who choose the picture of exact same subjects, the picture of the first X100 as somewhat more pleasant and satisfying to the eye. The reason i sold all others but still kept the first one. I doubt the VI will have it but i try it for sure. Sadly big stock shortage and prices rise well above advised price into a ridiculous 1800+ euro's will take some time.

    I think $1,599 USD is a fair price, considering the substantial upgrades, particularly the new IBIS system. I also think the fact Fujifilm built a new factory in China bodes well for meeting demand this time around. Sure, there could have been other changes, such a fattening the grip to make room for a larger battery, but it seems wiser to retain the winning design aesthetic. Regarding the lens, I suspect the update for the Mark V was forward-looking, just as Fujifilm has updated many of its XF lenses to keep up with increases in sensor resolution.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts. There are plenty of x lenses that do not resolve 40mp, (also true of every brand). I’m sure it was planned to cover 2 generations, I’m not sure it’s up to the task. 🤷‍♂️ in any case, Fuji always update sensor, then a generation the lens gets an update. To me if the lens can support the resolution as ‘planned’, they wouldn’t update the lens as the key selling point in the next generation.

It's a shame as the new company doesn't seem that interested or even capable of much R&D that comes anywhere near the kind of advances and forward thinking of Olympus. Incremental updates buffer size, RAM or even sensor aren't going to cut it so if this keeps up and there's no actual innovation then the whole system is going to wither and die. My first camera was the 10-year-old OM-D E1 and it was so ahead of its time it's remarkable.
