@Emeriican I am a FF/EMT, I am also a paramedic graduate and a nurse. My dad is a firefighter also. At 18 I started as a volunteer, went to college and got my EMT license as most departments require it. I started working as a nurse mostly cause of the pay, got tired of nursing and applied for a career FF job, I love it dont regret the drop in pay at all...its very rewarding. Love the trucks and the excitement too.

let me say this , as a volunteer fireman here in west Virginia , several months ago returning from a doctors appointment my daughter and myself came upon a bad rollover car wreck with driver being entrapped on I77. on initial contact with the vehicle and bystanders were attempting to open doors and gain access to the driver. with the car laying on its roof , I then noticed a male subject with a Columbus fire tee shirt on , as we teamed up , and gained access to the driver who was in serious shape , we managed to get her free while awaiting the ambulance. never had the chance to ask his name or thank him , as we went different directions to our vehicles. so its a day late and a dollar short but, thank you for you for your assistance that day.

@Emeriican I am a Firefighter/Paramedic I've been in the Fire service for 20 yrs. U can make a decent living as a firefighter but the important thing is not the money, its doing a job that you love. Being a firefighter is not a job, it's who you are. Not everyone can, or will do it. No matter how much you pay them. It starts with a willingness to act, to help people, even when it's dangerous. Sounds a little like you. U just need the training. PS i still love playing with the firetrucks!

I am a Jr. Firefighter with my local VFD and as soon as I joined, I imediatelly fell in love with it. I have always planned to be a Deputy with the local sheriff's office, but up until I joined, I never thought twice about being a volunteer firefighter as well. It is an amazing experience and I hope to continue it for the rest of my life. God Bless the men and women of the fire service.

All i can say is that i am thankful for fire fighters.
I lost a friend in the Victorian Bushfires early 2009....but those men, saved many of my other friends that would have died if it wasnt for them.....they cant always save everyone...and sumtimes they have to end up saving themselves.. but they have the courage to save sumone in this world...and that make all the difference!

I'm nineteen and I can't imagine doing anything else. I started as a fire explorer at fourteen and grew up in the station. As a junior and a senior in hight school, I was in a fire science program that pushed my training to the next level. Once I graduated, I moved to a bigger city for a college education in fire science. While I do that, I applied to become a resident at a local fire district where I now live and work in the station. Now I'm being hired at the department that I was an explorer.

@Emeriican I've been a firefighter going on a year and a half, i would highly recomend joining a volunteer firecompany when you can. The work isn't easy, or fun. The hours are almost always annoying, and the things you see will both terrifying and humble you, but at the end of the day it is worth it, but not everyone can do it, just know there is no shame in not being able to do it. Stay safe.

I'm married to a volunteer fireman and I honestly have to say that i appreciate everything he does. When i rolled my car in may of last year, he was the first one there. Not only did he help me, but there's been many of times hes put his life on the line for other people. He's willing to risk his life to save someone else's. I love you more than anything baby and thanks for everything you do

There is a steering wheel for the "Tillerman" who steers the rear axle on the trailer. That gives the truck more maneuverability in tight spaces. Ironically places like German Village in Columbus have very small brick streets like in Germany, so it is hard to get fire trucks down some alleys and streets there.

firefighters man aren't they the greatest. I remember my twelve birthday my bro burned something in the kitchen caught the house on fire. the way those firemen busted through the door was just amazing.we were left home alone man I know firefighters gotta hate when parents leave their kids alone.but every since that day I been fascinated with firetrucks and firefighters.respect the heroes.

I served 50 years in the fire service and was a former fire captain and now serving as an incident safety officer on the fie dept I currantly belong to.I was in suburban New York when 911 happened and I personally knew 4 firefighters who died at the World Trade Center.I have seen a lot of horrible stuff, removing burned bodies and victims in vehicle crashes. Our fire department also responds to suicides. One of the most unpleasent suicide we responded to was for a teenage girl that hanged herself

I'm 21, and am just beginning my journey as a firefighter. You have great ambition and I believe if you never lose sight of your goal, you will achieve it! Take as many classes and meet as many people as you can... and always strive to be the best person you can be. Also, get your EMT and volunteer at a department whenever you can, and that'll be a great start.

I live in Ohio and I went to station one last year and sat in the tiller cab of tiller ladder 1 or top gun a d I have to admit, station one is sweet and their equipment, engine 1, engine 9, and ladder 1 are pretty sweet. God bless the firemen everywhere, one and all for your service. I pray that you ALL come home every night. Thank you for your service

@Emeriican Coming from a family of firemen, 1. Volunteer, see if you can do it, and if you do, gives you valuable experience. 2. GET A COLLEGE DEGREE!!!! some depts are now requiring degrees in anything, and also just in case (God-forbid) you get hurt, you have a back up plan. 3. Playing with firetrucks will be a side affect with loving the calling

@chasefire riding in the engine is the best, also its not as much about money as it is about how rewarding it is. Im not sure how it works in other states but in Florida you must be a EMT-B as well as having your Fire fighter 1 and 2 certificates to get hired.

Columbus only had 4 of that type of engine. They we replaced this summer with Ferrara's I believe. Those have 750 gal. tanks as opposed to 500 gal. tanks which were not well liked by most of the Columbus FF's.

@bled12345 Hey Bled, This video features Columbus Ohio firefighters. Our fire and EMS are combined. In other words most of us are Medics and rotate between fire apparatus and EMS vehicles. And you have a point , on a day a ride the medic truck and take 20 to 30 runs in a 24 hr shift and watch my pals on the engine or ladder take 10 or less i feel your pain. But lucky me I get to ride the Engine every other duty day and get to be slug lol. So hang in there and BSI scene safe.

@EddieDean11 I agree with you. You have to be at the top of your game at 300am when the page goes out for a structure fire or a vehicle accident or to a little old lady's house that is having a medical emergency. But in the end knowing that you have saved someones life is a big reward.

@Emeriican i agree with everything chasefire said. Im a firefighter myself third generation. I suggest starting out as a volunteer take advantage of the training and also you can get a feel for the job and see if it is something your cut out for and passionate about. Im not downing you in any way but it very hard physically and mentally especially seeing the things we do. i wish you the best of luck buddy and let me know if you need anymore advice.

@bled12345 I volunteer at a small fire department, we usually have right around 310 calls annually. Over 50% of these calls are EMS, Im working on my EMT and of the 30 firefighters we have at my station, we have 5 Medics, 10 EMTs, 3 First Responders. Hardly a day goes by that we do not have something EMS related. Yes we do get to have a little bit of fun every-now-and-then ,but between training, running calls all hours of the day and night, and risking our lives, I believe we deserve a break.

  • @fire7655

Dude, you will never understand the job we perform until you try it yourself. Even though it may look like we perform simple tasks, it is the complete opposite. This job is very strenuous and requires a great deal of knowledge. If you don't have anything good to say, don't say it because we know what it takes to do this job.

@Emeriican hey kid, if you are wanting to be a firefighter and go to college, too, then check out eastern kentucky university. it's a great school that has one of the best fire programs in the nation. that's where i'm at right now and i am learning so much to hopefully make me a better and safer firefighter when i get out there in addition to the training we all have to go through. (which will hopefully be CFD here soon... fingers crossed!) good luck!

It's not about just death it's the risk. Loggers, farmers, roofers, etc don't deal with individuals who have hep C, Aids, or any other contagious desease. I will say that any firefighter who goes around toting that "MY job is dangerous woe is me" is in it for the wrong reasons.

@Emeriican As a probie first starting out, the pay isn't the greatest at all. When you start off on a truck company the pay gets better but not great it just depends on the department you get on at. Then if you move up to be like a baillan cheif or a second chief your up in the 90-110k a year range. Idk where ya live but you should look into career center that has a firefighting class an became a cadet why your still in highschool, thats what I did an it worked out for me

Of course anyone could learn how to be a firefighter, just as everyone can learn how to be a roofer.
