    *A huge thank you to Razor Beast and his wife for their invaluable help on translating this Ration!
    __________________________________________________________
    Translation below:
    (The very top of the pouch says "Internal Security Operations Command" the number 4 is apart of a numbering system used by the Thai government to classify different zones of the country. In this case 4 is the southern region. The first line directly underneath that says "Meal Ready to Eat" the line next to it says "Beef Panang Curry" The rest of the package says "Steamed Jasmine Rice 300 grams, Beef Panang Curry 130 grams, coated wafer (it's referring to the chocolate wafers) 20 grams, fish sauce + chili powder + spoon" The Halal symbol is next. Under that it says "Manufactured by Siam International (1994) inc" Then the telephone number. The rice packet says "ready to eat" the halal symbol, food and drug administration symbol (apparently there is a Thai version with the exact name as the US one). The first picture on the left says "how to eat" with the 1st instruction saying "tear the pouch" and the 2nd saying "eat". The second picture says "how to heat it up" with the 1st instruction saying "boil in water for 3 to 4 minutes" 2nd saying "tear it and eat it". The third picture with the microwave also says "how to heat it up" with the 1st instruction saying "heat it up in the microwave in a container and use high heat for 2 minutes" The text directly underneath says "no preservatives". Underneath and to the left states the weight which is 20 grams. Under that is the date it was made which is the 9th of October 2009. To the right is the expiration which is 9th of October 2010. The curry package says at the top "Beef Panang Curry 130 grams". The halal symbol is again located under it. It also has the same heating and eating instructions as the rice. No preservatives and the dates are the same. On the Rocco package it says "wafer filled with chocolate cream and coated on the outside". The FDA logo is on the back.)

    Hey there, everyone! This time we have a "best by" 2010 Thai Army Ration, and according to various translations it is a Stir Fried Beef Curry with Garlic & Pepper.
    This was an incredibly exotic Ration experience, the entree was fantastic.
    A strong authentic curry overtone with the beef, and garlic and pepper undertones with the savory beef and rice as a nice base to the whole thing.
    The chocolate wafer bar was stale, but I still managed to enjoy it.
    Fish sauce was spoiled, sadly. I was hoping it would be good, but being 6 years past the "best by" date, I was really surprised any of it was.
    Then again, I eat some really old stuff so I shouldn't be too surprised.
    Overall, this was a very enjoyable experience, and I hope you all like the video!

    I had my wife who is from Thailand watch this video and she has some comments. She said you used too much fish sauce! You're supposed to pour just a little bit over the entire dish and then stir it well. The taste is otherwise going to be too strong. The leaf that you found in the curry is called Kaffir Lime Leaf. The symbol that you found on the package and the chocolate wafers is the halal symbol for Muslims signaling that it is safe for them to eat under their religious customs. If you have any more questions please ask and I'll have my wife help you out!

    Hi, a Thai here.
    Here is the translation of the left side of the packet.
    รายการ = Food List
    ข้าวสวย = steamed white rice
    กรัม = grams
    พะแนงเนื้อ = beef Panang curry
    เวเฟอร์เคลือบ = glazed wafer
    น้ำปลา + พริกป่น + ช้อน
    = fish sauce + grounded chili + spoon
    below that is a halal cirtifiacation logo because there are Muslims in the army too. :)
    Fish sauce is very strong, salty, and smells very fishy so you may want to use sparingly.
    That brand of wafer is commonly sold. You could find thise in normal shops. ;)
    The table on right side is a nutrition facts table.
    and below the halal logo is the name of the manufacturer and other stuff.
    I do not know much about military rations though.

      I'm an Australian Army Thai linguist and have used these RTA rations when working in Thailand over the past 15 years. These rations are made in Southern Thailand (Army Area 4) as an employment and manufacturing activity in the three border provinces. So all RTA rations are Halal (Islamic approved).
      When in Southern Thailand, I always try to get Australian diggers to try 'Red ants with cashews and chillies'. The Thais hanging out with them love it!!!

      Every time i feed someone something with fish sauce cooked into it, they love it!
      If they take the bottle of fish sauce and smell it, to go "ew i don't want to eat that"
      I'm like DUH BITCH, would you eat a tablespoon of soy sauce? No, you wouldn't. Fish sauce adds a salt-watery fishlike flavor to the meal. It is DELICIOUS.

    The leaf is either Kiffir leaves (since it's light colored or maybe it's because it's over date) or Thai holy basil! And from the looks of it, you either got the Panang Curry (Keang Pret) or the Sour Curry. But since it doesn't look thick enough to be panang, it's more than likely Thai sour curry (Keang Som). :]

    It is Rice and Panaeng beef curry. The curry itself should be much thicker than this. Since it is beef the logo is Halal logo. Suitable for muslim as well. Same logo in the wafer. This is military ration for part of the army belonging to the internal defense batalion (or something similar). Packed on 22 August 2009. Best before 9 October 2010 as you deduced. No preservative. Box on the right give the nutritional facts and figures. Underneath the Halal logo is the name and address nd phone number of the company producingthis MRE. Wafer is commercially available snack included as sort os dessert. As the package is 6 years over the best before date fish sauce is easily gone off. Looking at the colour it should give a clue. Its colour should be golden brown slightly darker than whiskey. If it is as black as Soy sauce DO NOT eat it. The wafer should also have a best before date on the package but I cannot see it. In any case it should also be over by at least 5 years. Dried chili flakes as it is dry the life should be very long.
    Did you get food poisoning eating that?

    Hi! The "กอ.รมน.ภาค 4 สน." on the top part of the package basically IDs the ration for soldiers operating in (remote) forward bases of the three Southernmost province of Thailand where there's like 50% Muslims, so the Halal seal. It's quite likely that there are other Thai MRE variants for other parts of the country.

    But i never know before that our country is also have this kind of ration too, i'm really amazed here
    Well, great to see you enjoy our authentic curry, and thanks for the vid you uploaded here :D
    Btw, you just put too much of fish sauce there, so it's gonna be more salty and fishy lol
    we do put just a little of it, also with a chilli seed inside, for a more strengthen flavor

    • @razorbeast8709

      +stickyfingaz745 Here's an interesting fact. Traditional Thai eating habits did not involve chopsticks, in fact it is rather similar to the Ethiopian style of eating in which the hands are used. Chopsticks were later introduced from foreign influences, most likely China considering the proximity to the north.

    • @Sticky745
      @Sticky745 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RazorBeast Thanks for the info! It's always a pleasure learning things from different cultures. I'm also aware that most middle eastern countries eat their food in this manner. Other's like, Mexico,and central America use a Tortilla or flat bread to eat their food instead of using utensils.

    • @razorbeast8709
      @razorbeast8709 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      stickyfingaz745 Yes this is true. I'm particularly fond of Ethiopian food. They use a bread called injera in which you tear with your hands and grab the food with.

    Hi Steve! Greetings from Thailand! Very lovely review. I never knew the Thai army had any kind of MRE. The logo's halal logo to signify that its good for Muslims to eat and the leaf is kaffir lime leaf (sorry guys, its not curry leaf). Reading down the comments, some of my countrymen wrote they are proud a foreigner is reviewing the Thai army MRE. So thank you and you gave a lovely review. Anyhow, by comparing all other countries' military MRE, I've got to say that Thailand, my country, has got to improve on its packaging design and provide a little more in the pack for our poor soldiers!! I've been watching vdos on the US, Russian and French militaries' ready to eat meals, they've all got lovely stuff like liver pate, biscuits, hand wipes, dry fuel pallets, water decontamination pills, coffee, tea, juices, jams, fruit 'n nuts, beef stews, tacos, matches, energy bars, chocolates, condoms etc etc ... but all the Thai army gives its brave soldiers is this &^%$*& beef panang on rice???? Come on!! Good thing we're not at war cuz our army's literally gonna die from hunger in the battle field. Soldiers march on their stomachs right? I'll need to get in touch with my army chief immediately! This needs to get fixed asap!! Thanks again Steve, great review. Keep it up!

    • @TheMrVengeance
      @TheMrVengeance 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, sorry. It definitely IS curry leaf. Kaffir lime leaf, as the name suggests tastes like citrus. He ate a leaf and said it tasted like "pure curry". That's a curry leaf.

      @@TheMrVengeance Might be right but Kaffir lime leaf is hands down the most iconic spice for me in Thai food. It always makes the dish. When I cook myself I tend to crumble a few leaves in addition to having a couple whole, just for more taste, but is that a sin?

If training end up in jungle catering corp will distribute some raw food (meat, vegetable etc.) to every training battlelion (They got cycle for training. Each cycle will be arround 21 battlelions of cadet) after we got raw food all of us need to find the way to cook it for ourself. I want to try that MRE once haha. Nice video!

    Spicy food is such a morale booster. Even if you don't like it. I mean really even if you dislike spicy food. You're in a combat zone, you're worn down and beleaguered. The food you try to eat is hot enough to raise your body temperature and even numb your face a little bit. Even if you hate it, it distracts you immensely from the horrors and boredom you have endured. And if you love it? it takes you someplace else entirely.

    Steve, STEVE! You know I know Thailand.. :)
    FANTASTIC review.. I have bad news for you though. There's more than likely, NOTHING wrong with that fish sauce. Fish Sauce is HORRIBLE at the best of times. But it's kind of like "Vegemite". I see American youtube reviewers "taste test" Vegemite, and they go and get a whole TEASPOON full, and they eat it NEAT! NO! We don't eat it that way! In Australia we spread some butter generously over a piece of toast, then we spread Vegemite THINLY (unless you're one of those crazy f-ers who love salt) over the butter, and that's how we eat it. DELICIOUS, compared to eating it right out of the jar.
    Fish sauce, or "Naam Plaa" as it's called in Thai? Seriously two or three DROPS on your food. It works well in cooking, kind of like using MSG or Soy Sauce - but as a condiment? A drop or three at MOST. Anything more? WAAAY too much salt and fishy taste.....
    I'm super happy you reviewed a Thai MRE. Even when behind the scenes I've been trying desperately to get an up to date Thai MRE to send to you lol.. :)
    But yeah, believe it or not, I'm pretty sure that fish sauce is FINE. Because Fish Sauce is one of those condiments that is SO high in salt, that it pretty much never ever goes off. In fact, it just gets better and better, like an bottle of wine as it ages...
    Fantastic review as always bro, and super cool that you reviewed an MRE from my childhood home.
    I WOULD translate the Thai for you, but although I speak fluent Thai, I unfortunately cannot read or write.
    Ciao!

      That logo you called a company logo is actually a "halal" foods logo!
      It is to certify that the contents of this bag does not contains certain ingredients and are prepared in such a way that they adhere to the permissible foods and methods of preparation told to us in the Holly Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
      Simply put, this food can be consumed by Muslims as it is prepared in a certain way and does not contains certain not allowed ingredients e.g pork etc! :)
