      They call them "Udders" to disassociate from the fact that they are mammalian mammary glands.

    • @klaudia711
      @klaudia711 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      But it isn’t breast milk. The breast refers to the part of the body above the sternum (breast bone). Human beings are some of the only mammals to have the mammary glands over the breast, most mammals have them on the lower body near the reproductive organs.

    After years of struggling, being vegan on and off, I came across footage of a veal cow catching snow on their tongue on the mercy for animals page and started bawling my eyes out. Something just made it connect to me so much, I couldn’t separate it anymore. He was doing it the same way that a little kid sticks their tongue out and catches it when fresh snow falls. They are so much like us. How can we continue to treat them like this after seeing this.

      insert namehere so you are suggesting that this is worse than, say, coyotes, who will often keep their prey alive while eating it, starting from the hind legs and working forward, so they can preserve the meat for longer when they don't finish it all?

      hari Gorillas eat meat half wit. They eat insects, and have, on occassion, been known to consume small animals. They are biologically considered "mostly" herbivorous. We share 99% of our genome with Chimps, our closest living relative, who eat insects, small vertibrates, including antelope, and even human children. Ed’s narration is the part that adds drama and gives consideration to the scene.

      I don't want to get in an argument but other animals survive in the wild so I'm sure cows would do just fine. And there would obviously be less of them if humans didn't artificially inseminate them so without us intervening there would be natural amounts of them. Even if they can't survive for any reason I think it would be better for them to not be born than be born in these conditions. Also I do realize that there are people who see this and are not affected in the way I am, I was just giving my personal view as you said.

    i went vegan on boxing day last year for heath reasons but 8 months into it ive started to learn what actually goes on and how much suffering and pain these animals are subjected to because we like a fucking full dairy latte and a steak. After a week of not having any meat or dairy you feel so much better and you dont miss it at all, there is absolutely no need for this type of suffering anymore. I am so angry at myself that it took me early 24 years to realise what affect this has on our health, environment and also to these beautiful animals.

    According to the UK government, this kind of caging is probably technically illegal. I asked my MP. Apparently, the farmer is supposed to ensure the calves have not only visual connection with other calves but also _tactile_ connection as herd animals. Unfortunately farmers are allowed to cage these young animals they just have to line the cages up so that each calf can make nose contact with another calf in an adjoining cage. Obviously, still sick. If you know the name of this farm, Ed, you can report it for contravening a small part of the regulation on caged calves.

    so true , I studied animal care at college and from what I saw there was no care at all ! Animals were seen as food not friends I decided to leave as I felt I was contributing into a industry I disagreed with , the animals were raised for slaughter and the sheep for the wool, I felt like I was one of the only people who actually cared for the animals rights and feeling.
    I was hardly taught how to care for the animals but was only used to feed and clear up after them , nothing like I expected in all the taster days and leaflets I was given. Humans can be cruel and more people need to be educated on this subject. I am vegan and feel so much better for it.

I've just started my journey into veganism and it's extremely hard because my whole family and all my friends are meat and dairy eaters, and the only animals they care about are dogs and horses.
    It is so sad and stupid that children at school are NOT told the truth--would you believe that I, as an adult, had no idea that dairy cows are constantly impregnated and taken they babies away, otherwise they wouldn't produce milk? I can't believe how ignorant I was. I also had no idea about what happened in SeaWorld, zoos, circuses, from early childhood I was lied to and forced to eat meat but my parents were raised in the same lies.

I get defending the consumption of meat, but there are legit NO excuses for consuming dairy. It does not have any good effects on our health, it's not morally justifiable, it makes no evolutionary sense for humans to drink the milk of another species. Cows are very social animals, they have best friends and generally have a great memory that allows them to recognize members of their own kind and others. They are incredibly intelligent and loving animals. They don't just forget about their own child an hour after you take it away from them.
      You grew up on a farm, it's your life, so I understand you'd defend that. But I'd expect you'd know more about cows, given that you work with them, and not tell lies to defend your lifestyle.

  • @JoJoRawr

    I lived on a dairy farm for a while (just renting, not working). The cows all seemed happy and voluntarily entered the milking area because the farmers bribed them in with cattle cake, they seemed very relaxed and happy about it. The calves were all kept indoors in a barn together, not in solitary confinement :) Seeing all of this make me think that (in the UK at least) the dairy industry wasn't so bad. But for some reason it never occurred to me that I didn't ever see a single calf with it's mother on the farm in all my time there. With dogs and cats we even consider it cruel to separate them any less than 8 weeks old, so why are cows different? I never wondered what happened to the male calves that were born there, as they had no purpose on a dairy farm. And I didn't wonder what happened to cows who stopped producing milk and no longer served the farmers. It's not that I didn't care or chose not to think about it, it just never occurred to me. I only saw the happy cows grazing in the sunny fields and happily jogging in for their cattle cake.
    Not every farm and factory is as bad as some of the horror stories we hear, but there are some consistent crimes that even the 'better' places can't avoid. We need to look at this industry as a whole, with real perspective. How would we ourselves feel to have our children pulled from our arms within a day of giving birth to them, for our daughters to be put through the same thing and our sons to be murdered just because of their gender, for us to be killed if our bodies could no longer serve a purpose that they were never even meant to serve? All to provide something that wasn't even necessary, that could have been substituted all along.
    I wish I'd thought to ask myself these questions sooner, but I'm here now and I'm learning. I'd rather know the ugly truth and make informed decisions than bury my head in the sand or remain blissfully ignorant. Thank you for your help, Ed.

  • @marksawyer1868
    @marksawyer1868 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This video is wrong for several reasons I know this because I work on a dairy farm in the UK.
    1. The milking machines do not spread infections such as mastitis. The units are cleaned between each cow. The cow's udder is cleaned before and after milking to keep the udder clean. Therefore the milking process reduces the chance of infection as the udders get cleaned. A calf will not clean the udder before and after feeding.
    2. Calves suckling is a natural instinct. However this does not mean that they are wanting anything. They do it because it is an instinct regardless of how hungry they are. A calf will still suckle after being fed.
    3. The calves are not instantly taken from their mother and weaning is a natural process as the calf grows up, which they do a lot quicker than people. There will be more pain if a relationship between the calf and mum is allowed to grow more so taking calves at an early stage removes further pain for both.
    4. All animals will die, this is something no-one can deny. So stating that they will die is not helping your argument as they will die regardless of whether they get milled or not.
    Please listen to reason and logic when listening to vegans as they usually don't know what happens on a dairy farm because they don't work or live on one. Good luck vegans👍

      this may not happen on your farm but on many others it does. The conditions they are kept in can be way worse than this. even if they are kept really well (even tho u take them from their mothers when you shouldnt and it is still cruel) they still end up getting their throats cut and eaten by us, the end result is still death. Humans come on earth and act like we can decide who lives and who doesnt with our superiority complex. Its not our place to kill innocent creatures that dont need to die when we can live off plants. I dont understand how you dont feel like taking a calf off their mother is cruel either way?? like just let the calf have a relationship, the fact that theres less pain doesnt make it any better, your still taking it and setting it up for a life of exploitation and being used for its milk and meat. they have feelings and emotions, im sure if we were treated like these animals and abused and exploited for our meat and milk youd be thinking differently.

      @afwnafona 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marksawyer1868 and cows are sentient beings. ive seen many videos of cows chasing after their calfs and ive seen it irl on farms. Just because they may accidently crush their calfs every so often which happens with humans as well, mothers accidently rolling on their babies, doesnt mean they are not sentient beings. some mothers that are humans also kill their children, doesnt mean that all other mothers dont care for their kids. Its scientific facts that they experience emotions similar to ours, maybe not on the same complexity, but regardless its not fair for us to be the dictators of life

    • @afwnafona
      @afwnafona 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marksawyer1868 just because something has been "normalized" it doesnt make it normal or moral. Killing other creatures and exploiting them for their whole life is not normal is it. We dont know where the meat comes from so we dont want to support cruelty towards an animal, and again even if the animal lives a "happy life" which im sure they dont, they still get killed for no reason. Meat is not healthy, yes it provides some nutrients but the negatives outweigh it, on top of this their is no nutrients from animals that we cant get from plants. Plants give us all the benefits without the toxins. On top of this the animal industry is ruining our planet. There are many many many studies that show all of this information that ive just said. I just went vegan 4 days ago and have found new brands of yogurt and types of milk that taste WAY more appetizing than brands containing dairy. I'm doing a vegan "challenge" in a way. Just eating plant based all of June and seeing how I feel. But this reality isn't going to go away if I go back to eating meat and consuming animal products so I already want to stay vegan.
    I looked at ribs and wanted them for a split second but I said no. I said no to a bacon and egg based meal. (which was one of my favorites) The happiness I felt knowing I wasn't supporting animal cruelty just for my taste buds to enjoy is truly indescribable. I have no vegan friends, no vegan family members, and a lot of people thinking its stupid because I "need" meat. So I'm in this alone and watching a ton of videos on youtube on meal prep, recipes, more on how these horrific industries work... And informing myself in any way that I can.
    If we can't watch how our food is killed because it's so traumatizing and we feel guilty for eating meat afterwards, if we can even get through the video, don't you think we shouldn't be eating it?

    This is horrendous! As a chocolate lover I used to always buy cadburys.. Galaxy etc. So glad I have gone Vegan now and will never go back to being vegetarian or a meat eater. Poor babies :( Let's stop this and end their poor suffering.
    Thanks for educating Ed. We are with you all the way to help shut these places down!

    Mastitis isn't caused by milking there are plenty of women with mastitis. I live on an organic dairy farm which keeps calves with there mother's for up to a month and when theyre not feeding from they're mothers we have teet feeders not just buckets. Plz don't use this as an example of all dairy farms. We have 7 calf igloos the rest are in with other calves and mothers who they suckle off so pipe down and do it research.

      A month isn’t long enough, they should be able to as long as they want, not as in feed but being with their moms, and he knows more than you, the calves would rather be free

    Ok. Let me clarify this. To introduce myself, I live on a mixed farm, doing arable work and raising livestock. Livestock (cows) that is meant for the beef market. I eat meat.
    First, the calves outside. The huts they were in are designed to keep them warm. Plastic is an insulator. Those calves are plenty warm when you combine the straw in the huts and the insulating capacity of the plastic hut, which is higher than you think.
    Second: the suckling. Calves suckle because it is an instinct, in that you're correct. However, that does certainly not mean they are hungry. When I go to our cows at any point in the day and I stick my hand out, they will see if they can eat it. Cows are always looking for something to eat, even after they've just been given food.
    Besides those two, you mention a machine that spreads a certain bacteria. This is not an argument. I can say vegan food spreads bacteria and it will have the same value when used as an argument. You don't have figures, you're just guessing that it happens, somewhere, despite the fact that all farmers are required to desinfect their milking machine and the udder of the cow that has just been milked before the next one gets milked. You also say that all cows in the dairy industry end up dead. Doesn't almost every organism on this planet eventually end up dead?
    You say they will be forcibly impregnated. I assume you mean IV? Yes, it is by definition done forcibly. After all, cows can't tell us whether they object or not, can they? IV is barely felt by the cow, the only reason it acts strange is because it isn't the penis of a bull, but the arm of the vet that is inserted. I've been with cows my entire life, trust me, when they are in pain, you will feel it.
    One major thing for all of you naïve vegans out there who have no farming experience: STOP THINKING THAT ANIMALS ARE THE SAME AS HUMANS. There is no reason for you to think they have the same needs and desires as us. They are animals: they reproduce yearly, as do most animals, they live in a herd were the strongest is king. Females are only ment for breeding and males for breeding and protecting.

      The whole point us vegans are trying to make is that no matter how well treated the animals are, they are not living the life nature intended for them and they have no say in what happens to them.
      I could kidnap someone's baby from her mother and give her a warm, "insulated" home and feed her a concoction of chemicals that aren't meant for her instead of breast milk so that I could have the pleasure of raising a child. Does that make it morally acceptable?
      Plus, there are many other reasons to not eat/farm dairy, such as the horrific effects on our rapidly dying environment, and the disgusting impacts it has on our health.
      But no, I get it. It just tastes too good for all that shit to matter, right?

      Lee Johnstone www.whitelies.org.uk/animal-welfare/what-happens-calves-when-we-drink-cow’s-milk here is a link explaining it more, but basically they get fed milk replacer which is a man made substance, while we take the actual milk. Actually a thought just occurred to me, why don't we just use milk replacer as our milk? Just a thought

    I just want to say (as a beef farmer) that you people are generalising all farms and don't really know what u are talking about. For example the calves. They are kept separate for the first few weeks to minimise the risk of disease. The majority are given coats and any ill ones will be treated. They will be put in groups in a few weeks. Also, that oat milk you're drinking, well, it's waste will more than likely go to farms for feed. My main message is to not generalise all farms and just keep an open mind.

  • @Ethan-ck6iz

    This is stupid because here in Canada they get locked up in a shed for the winter to stay warm. They get loud when somebody approaches because they think that you will feed them. They eat the fence because they are trying to get through to drink out of the bottle they think that is in your hand.

    This looks like a beautiful farm. Some calves have jackets. They are clean, their hutches are clean, they look healthy! They have nice, warm straw! I would like to visit this farm.
    The chewing on the bars behavior is normal for young calves, that is their strong suckling instinct. Calves will suckle on ANYTHING they find. Which, btw, is another reason why theyre separated because if they suckled on everything they could put their mouth on they'd be subject to SO MANY PATHOGENS and even death if they consume manure. Calves are born without an immune system, separating them allows the farmer to focus on the calf's individual health as they feed the calf plenty of colostrum and milk. This sets the calf up for success before they start to congregate the babes back into the herd. Remember THE CALF IS THE FUTURE OF THE FARM. No bug sharing! No bug eating! Space and time to grow into big healthy babes where they will get their colostrum and vaccinations. Notice one of the calves at the end playfully bounces. These babes are not stressed or sad.
    This process of being in a hutch only lasts a month and it is for their health. Look up videos of calves being turned out together, it is quite adorable.

    My grandfather had a farm and he had 2-3 cows and he have never killed them but we have used to drink their milk. I don’t think that was immoral.
    He also had 1-2 horses, about 10-15 chickens (natural not mutated ones), pigeons, dogs, cats, 3-4 pigs, about 5 ducks.
    Everyone was happy, no torture, animals were eating a lot of grass behind the barn. He used to use horses to plow fields. He had lots of veggies and fruits and grain.
    Occasionally he killed a chicken or a duck for food, or pig. But they were living long time before that, some even years. He never killed a cow though.
    He was living sustained lifestyle all by himself no need to buy anything from shop.
