6:17 called it. Tock's semblance is 60 seconds of invincibility at the cost of completely depleting her aura afterwards. She's also inspired by the clock-swallowing, Captain Hook-stalking croc from Peter Pan!
certainly caught on faster than I did, I had to look it up to finally work it out
And her semblance allowed her to have an extremely aggressive fighting style because she didn't have to worry about leaving herself open to counterattack, just about finishing the fight quickly
You know,the more I think about it,Peter Pan was really dark like that. The slow tick tock tick tock just counting down to his inevitable death.
Awesome draw on the old mobile game. They nerfed it to 6 seconds, but those 6 seconds buy you an invincible aggro stealer while you spam DPS behind her. (She pretty much gets pummeled to death after those 6 seconds because you used her as bait, but she talks too much anyway).
I read that clock swallowing as something crazy
Interesting fact: I believe Melissa Sternenberg was pregnant when she recorded that scream of agony for Maria
She might have been joking but I think she said those are her actual labour screams.
The first time that scream reached my ears, my adrenaline spiked like I was going into a fight or flight state.
I will also say because no one mentioned it Tock was an assassin sent by Salem, now Tyrian fills that roll.
One detail I always loved most about this episode was a small thing. If you look closely at Qrow and Ruby as they’re both on the couch eating, they both shake or wiggle their head side to side.
Not as pronounced on Qrow, but Ruby definitely takes after him. Or maybe mimics him? She was definitely inspired by Qrow the same way that Qrow was inspired by the stories of Maria.
Weapon designs too.

I loved the Maria v Tock fight. Very well choreo'd and executed.
The coolest thing about it, it was Exactly 60 seconds long, from button push to bell ring. So it played out in real time (for the most part.)
It was a complete fight, unbroken, no cut aways, no pauses for dialog. From beginning to end.
Reminded me of some early RWBY fights.
I am sure Maria could have bested Tock if she could have endured those 60 seconds. Like Tock said, "it was a close one".
But Maria had just battled a Nevermore, and was now fighting 4 on one, with one being invulnerable for a time. Likely taking even more damage to her aura.
All in all, it was a great fight.
I always like the little detail that when Maria says that some of them are already stronger than her, we see Yang in the foreground, insinuating that she was talking about her primarily, overcoming trauma and returning to combat, which Yang did but Maria was unable to do.
Also, I'm almost sure that you are already ahead of this episode, so let me allow myself, the character who will be introduced in the next episode, is voiced by Mela Lee, who you have already had the pleasure of hearing as as Jade in Mortal Kombat ^^.
I love this episode so much. Not only do we get to learn about Maria’s awesome backstory (and get to hear incredible voice acting with that shriek of agony), we get some super cute moments at the end.
About Neo heigh, she was always small, but since she had a lot of scenes with Ruby (who is also small) it's normal to remember her as taller. Also, Cinder is on her 20's allready, she just pretended to be a student hunter to infiltrate Beacon.
Yeah honestly the easiest way to remind folks is to bring them back to Neos first dedicated fight scene with Yang and how they showed her being head and shoulders shorter than Yang. Yangs not exactly small but she is still a kid. Neo is a short queen and knows how to use it against people though.
Ah yes my favorite episode If you're wondering the crock lady is based off the crocodile from Peter pans crocodile that chomps on captain hook
Impressive detective skills, figuring out what Tock's(crocodile faunus) semblance was.
That might be the quickest I've seen somebody clock on to Tocks semblance. Good call!
Marias weapon inspired Qrow and his weapon, and Ruby clearly takes after Qrow, inspiring the creation of Crescent Rose. We now have an entire evolution line of scythe wielders.
We finally meet another Arc, and get to see a glimpse of the rest of Jaunes siblings. The general thought on that is they're all based on rainbow colors.

Not only that, Maria is likely why Gun-Scythes are considered so deadly, if you remember way back at the start, Ozpin said ruby's weapon was "One of the most dangerous weapons ever designed".
I love Ruby and Jaune's moment reuniting. Also the music as they approach the city was a slower version of the intro.
I look back on this over the years---is this where the Lancaster ship really gets going? (I'm something of a White Rose man myself... [LOL] but the Jaune/Ruby interaction here is very wholesome.)

Me looking back at this vol., and knowing that’s to come: yea this was nice seeing them breath for 2 minutes huh
in a relatively recent Twitter post, Miles Luna talked about how they had a production limitation making the Grimm Reaper fight, giving them only about 60 seconds screen time for the fight scene, so they took that limitation and made it part of the plot, with Tock's semblance.
I always wonder about the disappearance of the vault portal when Cinder and Neo are in the vault 🤔
My headcannon is that the doors only stay open a set amount of time by Oz's design to avoid any unfortunate maiden situations making it uncloseable.
Fun fact about Maria's weapons: They're both scythes infused with gravity dust, which explains how she's able to manipulate them.

Granny grimm reaper and the reunion 🥰 i always love their reunions especially jaune and rubys in this vol was definitely a favorite "hey,i promised didn't i?"
Maria’s backstory is some of my favorite 4minutes of the whole show; wish we got more of her 😬 (also love Tock; GatorGirl 😎)
As people have already said in the comments, Tock's semblance is invulnerability for 60 seconds and that fight lasted about that time. A bonus fun fact is that Miles Luna (one of the producers of the show and the VA for Jaune) said that the higher ups told them they only could monetarily budget out a 60 second fight for this episode. Thus he and Kerry Shawcross (another producers and the VA of Neptune) had the genius inspiration of Tock. And the rest is history...(Source being one or both of their Twitter accounts. Was months ago tho, so don't have the tweet on hand)

What's funny you should know, neo is actually in her 20s 😅
And now you know who was the inspiration to Qrows weapon which led to Ruby making her weapon.....too bad none of them had gravity dust ideas nor dual wielding concept....oh well..... still an interesting roll model there
I always thought the attraction was her semblance, only on this viewing I realized it came from the weapon.

It's _Preflexes,_ it allows her to react to things moments before they happen (basically Spidey-sense). It was how she was able to block the incoming bullet when Tock and her goons first jumped her.
@@axxjazz.The purple flare in her scythe is gravity dust in the mechanism. The activation switch has an up or down, attract or repel.
Tock is based on Peter Pans mix up... crocodile mostly as she is a faunus croc, she uses swords based on pirates and she has a clock like the the croc swallowed
Neo has always been the smallest of the characters we’ve seen… Maria is probably ( definitely shorter in that old age trope)

This comment is for Ken, I know it’s pretty much a paragraph but bear with me here: You said Neo doesn’t have a chance against Ruby, but that’s not true, Ruby is just a kid, she’s not the best fighter in the world, and silver eyes is only really useful against Grimm, the only reason it hurt cinder is because her arm was Grimm, and Neo is one of the best combatants in the show, she’s constantly overwhelmed Ruby and her friends and almost killed Ruby back in Vol 3, the only reason she didn’t kill Ruby was because Ruby pressed the switch on her umbrella opening it causing her to fly off the airship they were on, which she survived with NO INJURIES, if it wasn’t for that one quick move, Ruby wouldn’t exist right now, and Neo was a bit cocky back then, so now with Roman being dead she probably isn’t gonna be playing around as much, the only person she’s backed away from is a maiden, because she knows power when she sees it, so I think it would take many people banded together to defeat her, Ruby is a weakling compared to Neo.
small correction, Cinder's arm wasn't Grimm when Ruby hurt her. It seems silver eyes can hurt maidens.
I just realised an idea of why that could be! Grimm were created by the god of darkness, and he also mentioned before blowing up humanity "using my own gift against me" as they cast magic toward him. Maidens are suffused with magic, and silver eyes are linked with the god of light, looks like they might work against everything he made.

Fun Facts
Fact 1: The name of the episode references the Grim Reaper, the personification of Death. The wordplay also references Maria's previous occupation as a Huntress and killing (reaping) Grimm.
Fact 2: The license plate number of the street tram that the characters ride is 12082018, which can be read as 12/08/2018, the date that the episode was released for FIRST members. Since RWBY is an American-made webshow, this date is written in the American format.
Fact 3: Ruby's name for Jaune in her Scroll is "Vomit Boy", his nickname from Volume 1.
Fact 4: One of Jaune's sisters in the family photo is dressed as David, a character also voiced by Miles Luna, from Rooster Teeth's animated series Camp Camp.

Fact 7: Miles Luna created Tock and came up with the idea of the fight between Maria and Tock only being 60 seconds long due to them having a restriction on how long fights could be.

Qrow based his weapon on Maria and Ruby based hers on Qrows. With training from Maria, the reaper can live on through 2 people :D

Soooo, ya wanted to know about the old lady... only thing i want to know now is if she'll warn me if she thinks i'm becoming a threat, because i won't stand a chance, and she seems like a good guy.
On one hand, Maria’s backstory still makes me cringe. That scream was TOO perfect. But on the other, we get to meet some of Jaune’s family, and everyone gets a welcome break after the nightmare of Bartleby Estate. Plus, cute wittle baby~! 🥰
Neo has always been very small. Look back to the time she whooped Yang on the train in Volume 2. Yang is huge compared to her.

Maria Calavera deserves a side-story.. a novel? a manga? I don't care, just assuming she was pretty interesting character when she was young and combat ready, considering how sharp she's now.

Aaaand oh yeah! Everyone notices the similarity of Argus and San-Francisco, even i did=) Though I've seen San-Francisco only in some video games... and it looks pretty much like the city I live in. Long, hilly and got tram lines throughout of it=)

I'm always disappointed by the fact that no one talks about how Maria's semblance is effectively Autonomous Ultra Instinct. Albeit a watered down version.

Ahh, so when they introduced the couple is where i knew how RT was going downhill.
Ooof...things aren't looking great for RWBY now. RoosterTeeth is officially being shut down as of the news from about an hour ago. RWBY may or may not get sold off (Crunchyroll helped fund Vol 9) but it's up to WB and...well no one trusts WB right now.
Yeah sad news. I do wonder how that's going to affect getting reactions unblocked as well.
I’m late to the reaction today so most people have already given you my favourite facts (like the Tok fight lasting 60 seconds).
So instead I’ll recommend enjoying this episode the way I do; look up some queer-identifying reactors and just skip to Terra walking in the door. It means the world to them.
Fandom consensus at the time was that Neo intends to betray Cinder at some point. But we’ve now seen her back down from fighting a Maiden twice (Raven and Cinder), so even if she doesn’t understand what she’s fighting she clearly knows when she can’t win.
I like that the “happy episode” of the season still has a woman behead someone after having her eyes cut out.
When you finish with Volume 6, you need to see "So This is Basically RWBY" by Jelloapocalypse.
The message will be repeated until the current volume is finished.
