a question about something that no one seems to cover...as a live musician, how do the footswitches compare? A mate has the QC & the footswitches are just to damm close, trying to switch things off & on in the heat of battle is a nightmare. I've lost count of the number of times he's hit the wrong switch onstage. I've played it, & damm it's not good. You just wanna hit the switch on auto pilot, not have to tap around like a ballerina, esp while wearing boots. That & the propriety power cable make the QC an automatic no go for me...but dam, it does sound incredible, just not the most practical for gigging. So, how does the TMP compare to the QC in this regard?
It seems like each new gen of modelers sets the basic EQ to a more sensible default. The older the modeler the more tweaking and EQing you need to get what you want and a more real amp sound. My helix can get any sound I want but sometimes I have to really tweak it and do a little reading on frequencies and EQ. Same as my headrush mx5.
Great video but what’s going on with the cab sims in this demo? The real cab sounds great but the IRs sound like hot garbage on both units. Almost like there’s heavy comb filtering happening. I’ve listened to other demos of both of these that sound a lot more natural with the built-in cab sims.
Quad Cortex for me. Just smaller, easier to use, and in my opinion sounds better. And I can also capture amps and the Quad Cortex comes with more stock amps. But the release of the tone master is pushing Neural DSP to compete, lower their prices and fulfill their unfulfilled promises. Great comparison video!!!

enjoyed this video, refreshing to watch a video that presents information for the viewer and let the viewer decide for themselves on which unit would suit their personal tastes/preference, am using the TMP 6 days in a week for gigs with both acoustic guitar and electric guitar, much easier to make adjustments on the fly compared to the helix stomp i used to own. as for tones, well, to me, its splitting hairs nowadays with modelers...am very satisfied and content (for the time being 😂) with the TMP. Subscribed to your channel! 👍👍👍👍
Great job thanks for your work. Fender Tone Master sounds best to my ears. Question: Have you ever tried the ISP Technologies - Theta Pro DSP guitar effects processor? I have been using guitar effects processors for 17 years. Owned many but my go to for Pure Tone for me since 2018 is the Theta Pro DSP. This unit has a Pre & Post EQ which allows fine tuning to acheive desired tone. My setup is stereo XLR out to FOH, 2 mission engineering pedals (Volume & Wah), Parker Fly Deluxe guitar (rewired front pickup to single coil). I have received many compliments during live gigs being I don't use an amp on stage. Theta Pro has their signature decimator circuit in this unit as well to transparently eliminate any 60hz hum from a single coil. I play Rock, Pop, Funk, Disco, Ballads, etc in a weekend working band and the Theta Pro covers it all. Very interested in your thoughts on the Theta Pro DSP.
I probably won’t buy any of these but they both sound great. I do love my Nueral plugins though, so I imagine Ide buy the cortex for the sake of familiarity. If EVH were smart they’d release official EVH plugins of all their amps.
Would have been great up hear you try to match the built in cab sim to the real cab…. The cab sim sounded more like just the sm57 mic on the real cab, but the blended mics sounded 100% better
I think you may have gotten a dud with that one with the neck and the headstock moving like that because I have that same guitar in the same color and mine doesn’t move like that thankfully because that would definitely be a deal breaker for me too. I swapped out the pick ups for set of Ibanez V8, and V7. This thing just sings for me now and if you want to check it out, I have a couple videos in my channel where I play this guitar. Love your channel Taylor please keep it up always good information and awesome riffs.
Gonna buy Victory v4 sherrif guitar amp pedal...valve tubes are there so organic and for fx any stomp will work...thats it no more digital rigs ...they distract us from playing and focus more on tone making.
One area that I really found to be lacking for this unit are the built in cabinets while playing very high gain. After investing some time in effort into importing 256 impulse responses I am quite happy. I have imported roughly fifty different bass amplifier cabinets into the mix which has allowed me to use my bass a lot more, Typically using either the studio or tube preamp. I would love to see fender add some pedals thare are geared towards metal, like the horizon precision drive etc. I find myself using the real version of this pedal front of my signal as i'm not a huge fan of the built in options. If fender continues to support this product, i'm going to be in it for the long haul. If we hear crickets and nothing else gets released I will be big sad.
Funny enough the Uberschall on the Tonemaster dials in like a real one. The knob labeling is uhhhh unique. So that's actually pretty accurate to the real amp. That kinda impressed me when I had my hands on a tonemaster. Cool attention to detail I guess? They both sound cool though, and I think QC is little less clunky to control.
Hey Taylor, thanks for the great video! You mentioned that on the FTMP, all ten foot switches are assignable. Are you sure about this? In my experience, it seems only the inner 6 foot switches are assignable. (The bank switches are always banks, and the looper/tuner switches are always just that). I even expressed my displeasure with this to Fender when I shared some feedback, and they in fact did not argue my point. (They actually made no comment concerning the issue, so I'm still left wondering). Anyway, I would LOVE to be wrong about this, because I'd really like to make use of all 10 switches as I see fit. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts! Thanks!🎸
Thanks dude! So, you're sort of right. I was actually wrong about being able to assign the mode and tempo switches. In footswitch mode there are no bank up/down, so you can actually assign 8 total.
@@TaylorDanley so with the TMP, by being able to assign 8 in total brings it inline with the QC's A-H buttons. I tend to like to have 4 "channels" at my feet with effect on/off switching ability on the top row. From what you stated above, seems like the TMP can do that....which is a plus in my book.
Something other than death metal playing would be nice, but thanks for putting this comparison together; very insightful. I think the Fender MAY (Fender is not famous for supporting products they tend to abandon) come out with some updates that would make it more comparable to the QC's features. The QC seems a bit small for me, being that I sing in my band and need to look down and see the buttons clearly! It seems that the Fender has the buttons bigger and more spread apart or is that an illusion I see? Thanks!
Great comparison :) For me both sound great but the option to capture a snapshot of your amplifier just does it for me The Uberschall is a little weird to dial in. The treble knob acts like a prescence knob, the mid knob like a treble knob and the presence knob more like a … mid contour knob? I guess It’s „normal“ on the Überschall I guess 😅 But I love mine, and you get used to it really quickly
Thinking of purchasing either of these coming up (and most definitely using your affiliate links to do so :) ); do you or anyone here know if you can use Effects Returns for additional instruments/multiple guitars on the Tone Master Pro like you can with the Quad Cortex?
I don't think you can assign inputs the same way as with the QC.. Like the FX loop is a block, so i don't think it would work quite the same way... but it's worth testing out. I'll have to try that in the future.
Thanks man! Quick question if I may: The gapless switching on the Fender. Perhaps it was just the video/audio sync, but it looked like there was a delay between the press and the actual change. No sound dropout which is awesome, but a time delay. Easy enough to deal with if you just tap ahead slightly, but that's what it looked like. Did it seem that way to you?
Something all of these modellers/profilers are missing (apart from the Kemper powered options) is a power amp, to me that just makes them seem incomplete and less flexible.
@@TaylorDanleyI guess so. Still, in an ideal world it would be so convenient! By the way, after watching a few of your videos I picked up an Ampero recently and am having fun with it, nice little device and obviously the price is pretty unbeatable! Thanks for the tip 👍
I would say most owners of these don’t need or use power amps and run DI. Being able to add whatever power section I want with my FM3 is nice flexibility.
Would you be able to do me a huge huge favor can you make me a short testing the pitch shifter on the tone master pro I’ve seen it on the quad cortex I just haven’t seen or heard it on the tone master pro and currently the tone master pro is winning for me but I’m a Floyd player so I need a good pitch shifter if you can do this it would be greatly appreciated :)
Awesome video man! Question for you. In the story mode of the QC is it possible to assign different amps to different foot switches with different layers of overdrive, gain stages + effects? Is there a noise gate on the QC? So basically if I’m playing live and one part of the song completely changes distortion tone + effects can I get that by hitting one button like on a switcher? And is this switching transparent with no lag in story mode on the QC?
Yes, the QC has a “Scene” mode that allows you to add everything you need in a preset (amps, cabs and effects) and assign different parameter settings for those blocks to the footswitches. So for instance, you could have an amp block with the Gain set at 4 assigned to one switch and have that same amp’s Gain set to 8 on another footswitch and so on. Also, using scene mode gives you seamless switching on the QC. This goes for essentially all the parameters of amps particular amp or effect. You also have multiple amps and effects and assign combinations of them to different switches so that hitting a single footswitch could turn on an overdrive and delay with a specific amp and cab. And yes, there is a noise gate built into the Input block of the QC as well as a separate Gate block that you can place anywhere in the signal chain with different types of gates.
Hx stomp for life. I wouldnt pay those prices for either. Hx stomp is still fully supported, smaller footprint, way cheaper used. You just can't capture, but they have so many amps. Badonk is life!
@mikeham3123 I definitely agree! Even before I got an HX Stomp, I was never super big on the whole "capture" thing, I rather just have everything on a modeler sound good and be functional
But cant dual amp in the HX Stomp and limited fx block. It really depends on what type of playing you're going to use it. Some folks need 8-10 effects activated at once with a dual amp thing. So HX stomp might not work.
@jeremiegalan007 IMHO, that is just excessive. I have never seen a guitarist lug two different amps to a show to blend. Like the audience could even tell the difference lol. If you need more effects, you can certainly put them on your board. I have never used enough dsp with the hx stomp. I mean, overdrive ->gate->amp->ir->reverb->delay. What more do you need?
@@mikeham3123 Seems like you're limiting your scope for just metal. What about bands with just one guitarist who want to run stereo with two amps? What about people who play anything other than metal and want to replace pedalboards? Just get a big boy helix and lift an extra 2kg, having much more at your disposal. Effects are meant to be experimented with
Both are out of my price range. When a laptop studio is cheaper, more functional, upgrades are cheap, and lots of tone infinite actually. This seems like a step between garage/bar band and having a guitar tech live. I could see a tech running one in the sound booth at a live show.
Personally I prefer the high end of the qc that is present on most of the models. I feel like it’s made to play live and most settings are set pretty much where you add it and it is gig ready. When I play the qc live I constantly get compliments about tone vs other units I’ve used and units other guitarist use. Everyone has roughly the same comment, “it’s like you have a tone more tone, in a good way”
There are so many different demands. I m coming from a low gain territory guitar playing, so I cant get much useful information from ur videos usually. Whereever I try to listen to ur playing, 90 percent of a chugging, not too sophisticated sound. Would be nice if u always started with real cleans then just go any high gain territory. Tks
Wait, people really have money to buy these?? I mean i know i'm poor af, but god damn. I buy food rather than almost 2000 dollars effect device. If I buy effect pedal at some point, a 200-300 dollar device will be enough for me. And just at the moment, plugins are more than enough.
Just get a better job or save up. I'm on a monthly payment plan for my Quad Cortex and I love it. Slightly over 200 a month and I get to play with dozens of amps as well as capture any amp. Plug my quad cortex into my Orange 4x12 and it sounds massive.
His name is Tony Mckenzie, but he couldn't confirm what processor was in it as the heatsink was glued on and he wasn't prepared to break it. Looks like a quality built unit though.
I get amazing effects and textures runnig an axe fx ultra and a gsp 1101 at the same time.. Run a hybrid rig, GSP wirh the 5153 and the Axe Fx trhough powered speakers .. I would like to see more guitarist who use multiple rigs at the same time instead of constantly down sizing..
Fender put the cart before the horse, they should have come out first with a Tone Master non pro modeler for a price between $600-$800 and then come out with the Tone Master Pro for between $1000-$1200,yes both units are overpriced! In a few years there will be cheaper modelers that sound as good with touch screens plus capturing for less than half the price of these units!
Stankface... ENGAGE! Interesting how the Fender sounded so much better for the Bogner and kinda stale with the EVH. NDSP seems to have a functional unit but at the same time it's starting to look pretty dated already and your upcoming comparison... whatever that may be will make both of these look silly. I just hope it sounds really good but I feel like it will... Stay tuned everyone!

enjoyed this video, refreshing to watch a video that presents information for the viewer and let the viewer decide for themselves on which unit would suit their personal tastes/preference, am using the TMP 6 days in a week for gigs with both acoustic guitar and electric guitar, much easier to make adjustments on the fly compared to the helix stomp i used to own. as for tones, well, to me, its splitting hairs nowadays with modelers...am very satisfied and content (for the time being 😂) with the TMP. Subscribed to your channel! 👍👍👍👍
A+ for use of Michael Scott! 👍
I liked the TMP better. Nice video man, thanks :)
I probably won’t buy any of these but they both sound great. I do love my Nueral plugins though, so I imagine Ide buy the cortex for the sake of familiarity. If EVH were smart they’d release official EVH plugins of all their amps.
I agree. Fractal.
Love your channel Taylor please keep it up always good information and awesome riffs.
for the price QC is better otpions. You can use SCENES mode ...the sounds is on the similar level.
Disagree, it’s $1000 more in Australia for the QC…and the TmP sounds better.
it is point of view :). I think that the sound quality is very similar... This is shame that in Australia the QC is so expensive...@@algorithm007ify
Thanks for the info! I appreciate that.
Wow the TMP sounded better than the QC
Thanks!
Can you compare one of these (or both) to the Ampero 2 Stage?! That would be so sick! It’s so slept on!
Did Fender fix the 5150 III amp model yet?
Great comparison :)
For me both sound great but the option to capture a snapshot of your amplifier just does it for me
The Uberschall is a little weird to dial in. The treble knob acts like a prescence knob, the mid knob like a treble knob and the presence knob more like a … mid contour knob? I guess
It’s „normal“ on the Überschall I guess 😅
But I love mine, and you get used to it really quickly
Thinking of purchasing either of these coming up (and most definitely using your affiliate links to do so :) ); do you or anyone here know if you can use Effects Returns for additional instruments/multiple guitars on the Tone Master Pro like you can with the Quad Cortex?
I don't think you can assign inputs the same way as with the QC.. Like the FX loop is a block, so i don't think it would work quite the same way... but it's worth testing out. I'll have to try that in the future.
@@TaylorDanley thanks for the reply!
@@TaylorDanley Just clicked on the affiliate link and ordered the Quad Cortex, can't wait for Friday to open it up and see what it can do!
Great job! Keep using those real cabinets.
The one that is best for live performance is the one that does everything you need it to do for the lowest price point.
This is true
Valeton Gp200
hey whats up man like the video iv got a question what kind of rack do you have the quad and tone master standing on is it a lap top stand
I’m torn between quad cortex, the new fm3 and the fender
What cameras are those that do not overheat at 4k ?
Something all of these modellers/profilers are missing (apart from the Kemper powered options) is a power amp, to me that just makes them seem incomplete and less flexible.
I agree, but I’m sure the reason they don’t is the physical size the floor unit would have to be, and it would also increase the price by $5-600z
Hi. Is there some sort of drop, pitch fx in the Tone Master Pro?. If so, is it as good as the QC?
What power amp is that?
Would you be able to do me a huge huge favor can you make me a short testing the pitch shifter on the tone master pro I’ve seen it on the quad cortex I just haven’t seen or heard it on the tone master pro and currently the tone master pro is winning for me but I’m a Floyd player so I need a good pitch shifter if you can do this it would be greatly appreciated :)
Taylor, what are you using to upright these?
No bass presets on Fender Tp?
That's what im wonder. I play both bass and guitar but bass is my main.
Check out Tony Mackenzie’s review , he takes the Tonemaster apart to see what’s inside 😉
My man loves his powerchords aka chug w/some squeal thrown in for good measure. Both of these are over priced and under-perform IMHO. These are worth
It sounds like maybe your mics are phasing when combined… maybe…? It’s super muffled, while the individual mics sound great.
Ah shit, the gapless switching has *fully* put the Fender back in the race now for me. oof.
To be fair if you dude scene mode that gap doesn’t happen!!
@@mccloud273 I get the appeal of it, but the cost to get it is not worth it.
Effects are meant to be experimented with
Axefx is still the way. I’ve owned them all.
Both are out of my price range. When a laptop studio is cheaper, more functional, upgrades are cheap, and lots of tone infinite actually.
This seems like a step between garage/bar band and having a guitar tech live. I could see a tech running one in the sound booth at a live show.
Thaks for the video! Thebackground music is so annoying though :D
Personally I prefer the high end of the qc that is present on most of the models. I feel like it’s made to play live and most settings are set pretty much where you add it and it is gig ready. When I play the qc live I constantly get compliments about tone vs other units I’ve used and units other guitarist use. Everyone has roughly the same comment, “it’s like you have a tone more tone, in a good way”
Those EVH captures as Tasty AF
I think tonemaster better cause its react like amp
Both r very good. But no where near a fractal or kemper!!! Sorry but nothing beats those two!!!
Outputting past -12db will lessen the quality. Stop pushing the volumes to max at every stage.
As much as I would like a Quad Cortex, I’m so happy with my HX Stomp XL. Half the price and more stuff than I’ll ever need.
My $500 GX100 has gap less switching 😮
There are so many different demands. I m coming from a low gain territory guitar playing, so I cant get much useful information from ur videos usually. Whereever I try to listen to ur playing, 90 percent of a chugging, not too sophisticated sound.
Would be nice if u always started with real cleans then just go any high gain territory. Tks
If fender add the capture technology with a future update it will be a hige win.
Neural does have some polish they put on top of their models. Dont care for it at all. Tonemaster isnt perfect but sounds better to me
Still prefer the Fractal stuff. I think they still rule the modeling world 🤘🏻
Wait, people really have money to buy these??
I mean i know i'm poor af, but god damn. I buy food rather than almost 2000 dollars effect device. If I buy effect pedal at some point, a 200-300 dollar device will be enough for me. And just at the moment, plugins are more than enough.
Wait you can afford guitars and a computer??
@@QuickSticks8771 Was going to say the same thing. 300 dollars is barely enough to get you a beginner guitar now.
Just get a better job or save up. I'm on a monthly payment plan for my Quad Cortex and I love it. Slightly over 200 a month and I get to play with dozens of amps as well as capture any amp. Plug my quad cortex into my Orange 4x12 and it sounds massive.
Fender is too big... What's the point.
Tony McKenzie did a tear down of tonemaster pro 👍🏼
Thanks I'll check it out!
His name is Tony Mckenzie, but he couldn't confirm what processor was in it as the heatsink was glued on and he wasn't prepared to break it. Looks like a quality built unit though.
@@billybobhouse9559 thanks, I edited the name , I couldn’t remember what was the conclusion on that regard
I LOVE MY TMP. sold my hx and gt1000 because of it
The tone master doesn’t sound that good to me
Just get an FM9 and be done with it!!!!
TMP sounds better to me
I get amazing effects and textures runnig an axe fx ultra and a gsp 1101 at the same time.. Run a hybrid rig, GSP wirh the 5153 and the Axe Fx trhough powered speakers .. I would like to see more guitarist who use multiple rigs at the same time instead of constantly down sizing..
the peice of gear you need is the one you have. No need to fix what isn't broken. Stop the pointless consumerism
Thanks for the demo. Unfortunately those are tones I would never use. So its hard to say this was a useful demo. Thanks anyway.
Which ever one is cheaper
Soooo...
Neither
Bahahaha, made my day!
Headrush Core
Indeed! Both are overprized poopjuice!
Fender put the cart before the horse, they should have come out first with a Tone Master non pro modeler for a price between $600-$800 and then come out with the Tone Master Pro for between $1000-$1200,yes both units are overpriced! In a few years there will be cheaper modelers that sound as good with touch screens plus capturing
for less than half the price of these units!
🤢
Stankface... ENGAGE!
Interesting how the Fender sounded so much better for the Bogner and kinda stale with the EVH. NDSP seems to have a functional unit but at the same time it's starting to look pretty dated already and your upcoming comparison... whatever that may be will make both of these look silly. I just hope it sounds really good but I feel like it will... Stay tuned everyone!
The best modeller for gigs is right next to your left ear.
The Katana?
