Armed with a massive knife, some Island 'know how' and his Grandmothers recipe, Proud Niuean Shimpal Lelisi attempts to recreate his favourite Island dish Takihi, from scratch.
But there ain‘t no Pak ‘n’ Cave on the Rock - so using a dash of Bear Grylls' survival skills and a pinch of Jamie Oliver’s flare - Shimpal scours the Island, digs in the Taro Fields, ignites the Umu and cracks the Niu, all in a back breaking effort to recreate the taste of his childhood.
So what is Takihi? Well it’s not quite a savoury dish or a desert either- it floats in the space reserved for food that can’t be defined- it just is. Join Shim on his journey and then have your own- download the recipe PDF and sample this coconutty, fruity, starchy goodness for yourself. Sweat band optional!

Totally agree. Niue has the best taro in the world and it is dangerous eating takihi with a knife! lol Thank you Shimpal for sharing this treasure with us. Fakaue lahi!

Went to Niue for a one week meeting (because there was only one flight a week back in those days). Ate takihi at that meeting for morning tea, lunch, dinner along with the roasted pig, coconut crab, lobsters, fish and chicken. I gained 10kg in weight when I went back home. I think it was the takihi. In Samoa, we had a similar dish but along with most traditional Samoan foods, it has been lost to time unfortunately, although the name that my grandfather told me for the same dish, it sounded very much like takihi, although in Samoan there is no 'H' sounding word. So I think it was, in approximation, in Samoan language, takihi was kakisi, which makes sense, when you was think about it, like its sweet so when you go for it it's like saying to your girlfriends, aumai se kakisi, auoi!

Fascinating! And that’s the guy who eats with a knife! 😆😁 Niuean Shimpal Lelisi’s trademark. I didn’t realize he was the same one I saw earlier on how to cook taro until he started tasting the food! Funny!

Going to give this a try today! Substituting an electric oven for an umu, and canned coconut cream instead of fresh, due to geographic limitations :D

PS, in the Cooks we have all sorts of taro. Pink, yellow, grey and dark grey which is the nicest as well as the yellow ones.
And the pink Taro comes from Niue.
