Right? This channel is really filling (and/or satisfying) a niche; "itch" I've had for years, yet didn't know how to express. The book recommendations, the specific nuances of fighter's tactics and fundamentals. It's like the MMA equivalent of Levy doing a chess lesson video.
I'll like to recommend My Life with Wing Chun by Grandmaster William Cheung. He compares Wing Chun to Mike Tyson's style. Rafael Ramos recommends this book also
1. 33 strategies of war - robert greene 2. Dune 3. Mastery - robert greene 4. Taming your Gremlins - Rick Carson 5. The inner game of tennis - timothy gallway I recommend you watch the video though, Cory has a lot of good things to say.
For some videos, you can read a list and move on because the list covers the video. This is not that video. You should watch the entire video because that's the only value. And this video has more value per second than most all MMA-ish videos on YT. I'm super guilty of this. In fact, you should watch this video several times until the lessons get ingrained into your skull. Big thanks to Cory for putting in the time to create this. More important, big thanks to creating content that bucks the TT/IG trend of garbage on the intertubes.
Sandman that statement "I'm not smart I just read books that smart people write." is powerful. Your genius is that you have humility and thats a trait that isn't talked about much. I look for wisdom outside of myself also and you said a few things that I'll be trippin on this week.....Really digging this "station" keep it up and thanx
Yeah lol, reading books and taking away actionable steps kind of inherently sets you far above the average. It's like a programmer saying "I'm not smart, I'm just good at googling things and applying it."
The smartest people surround themselves with smarter people and learn from them. Except @jodawgsup. He could be surrounded by the world's top minds and he would still have an IQ of 72.
Thank you for bringing the "philosopher" as well as the "warrior" to the fighting space. A lot of MMA fans might forget, but many of history's greatest warriors were also deep thinkers when they weren't, you know...waging war.
Watching your stuff and hearing you on podcasts over the years, you give amazing advice on a growth mindset and how to really improve as a person. As someone who sometimes struggles with discipline and setting goals watching your stuff has really helped me understand the process of not just martial arts but life and the mindset that you need to get better at things. Thanks for being such a positive influence not only in mine but I'm sure other people's lives. Keep doing what you're doing brotha and can't wait to see you get that title shot and win!
What about Blood Meridian? Has helped me immensely and on a scale I can't even begin to consider, for the teachings I've gained from it are near unlimited. It teaches one a lot about how to actually inherit, teaches you a lot about the violence that men & nations replicate amongst themselves. And how to control it
Cory, I highly recommend Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. You have to be super patient with it and some pages and lines you have to re-read like 10 times before it makes sense, but if you persist with it, it delves into the nature of war like no other book I've ever read. Genuinely frightening, but absolutely beautiful at the same time. Here's a quote: "War was always here. Even before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner .”
I second this. All of McCarthy is excellent. Blood Meridian is easily his magnum opus though and stands as the greatest book I've read to date, and I've read hundreds across a large number of genres.
McCarthy is a good writer, but everyone be forewarned: his shit is dark and grisly, and not to speak ill of him since he’s passed on, but sometimes he just comes off as a miserable and wretched person through his writing (a la Stephen King). For example, “Child of God” by him is one of the most revolting things I’ve ever read, and because I read it for a class we discussed how he was poor and living in Tennessee at the time he wrote the book and may have been projecting onto those around him. Anyways, someone here lmk if you’ve read it and agree.
@thomaslawson7469 Suttree is the most realistic personification of McCarthy and his upbringing in the south. The book itself is semi autobiographical and all of his books take place in the south. He is considered a southern Gothic writer. Why do you ascribe the wretchedness in Child Of God to McCarthy himself?
hey, i know you guys have fought before so idk if it would be weird. but can we get a tj dillashaw technique breakdown? i’d love to hear your insight into his style and what you think about it, especially since you guys have shared the cage together
Juri got me on the book of five rings and now corey is making me want to buy that strategies of war book. I already have some dune books. I notice he has watchmen behind him too 👍
reading is actually the best base for not getting knocked out, keeping an active brain means a punch will just make you a normie instead of putting you to sleep, cory has never been chinned, on the opposite a guy like pereira whose brain simmers in a 30% ethyl solution (addictions damage people, there are so many of them, like junk food, children must get taught) is always getting chinned easily
I'd be interested in hearing about some of your more unorthodox training methods if there are any to note. Also, how being out in nature may help you as a martial artist.
Hey Cory just wanted to let you know the video is great but the audio quality is pretty bad. You could probably just buy like a $100-300 USB Microphone and that would probably fix 90% of issues (although it could be a problem on the software side if you think you're already using a good mic)
You forgot to mention kjv bible times are really getting rough right now that book is unfolding as we speak 🙏 pray people get saved before its to late,Jesus died for the sin of the world book of matthew hell was made for the devil and his angles he provided a way out for us out by dying on that cross not one that's rightious not one 😢prohecys are just unfolding hamas ,gaza turkey, that guy died on live TV for saying israel will get the wrath of allah, that's what happens when you mock CHRIST 😢, I'm a big fan brother but my job is to spread the gospel, book of romans is all about salvation through Jesus christ .Godbless you and your family take care idc if I get backlash from this comment this world hates christ just like he told us the world hated me the world will hate you ,take care sir
Bro Cory, I think your audio is peaking. Might be a microphone issue or a post production issue. Keep on posting tho dog! Love your unique approach to MMA!
Robert Greene's writing makes him sound like a nihilist, satanist, or machiavellian relativist. Furthermore, his books only worsen the mass distrust already within society, while simultaniously encouraging, and instructing, people of many diverse backgrounds, *how best to selfishly achieve their motives through dishonorable means.* The results of this will only hasten the destruction of a harmonious society. Thanks for the recommendations😑
Cory, please fix your audio. It sounds like I’m listening to you inside a pringles can Edit: glad I stayed and listened to the video, you have some great picks
Hey Corey, there is a podcast you would likely love. Its called "founders". The host just recaps biographies of great people, but its super detailed and he weaves in other biographies as well in each episode. Start with the Jay-Z episode and I think you would be hooked.
Man Cory this is some great content. Well I read dune 1 and at the start it was difficult to keep up but after 100 pages or so it was nice the world building was amazing Do you have any recommendation of something similar to Dune
You forgot to mention "How to be a Wag" by Ian Garry's wife

Ahh yes, good to see a fellow book connoisseur 🧐. A true must-read book for any distinguished gentleman’s collection
Greetings, fellow man of culture.

Corry, this channel is gold. You’re definitely tapping into a niche that the mma community wants/needs. Thanks for uploading these. Cheers!
Agreed 💯

I like the idea that Cory just recommended Dune because he just really liked Dune, and it had nothing to do with MMA.
