I lived in a village in Senegal for two years. I referenced the "Where There Is No Doctor" book quite often. Goiter is a huge problem there due to iodine deficiency and I'm pretty sure I saved a few lives with the knowledge in that book. These are great recs! Thanks!
I'm an American living in Thailand. Been here for 16 years and don't think I'll ever go back to America again before I die. All my family is dead so nothing to go back to. I am in the process of building a home in the Northeast part of Thailand on about an acre of land and I think I can grow enough to feed us and some left over to sell to the people in the village.
May I also recommend a book on butchering? There's a lot more skill than simply hacking a critter to pieces. I think some of those general books touch on the subject but a dedicated book will cover a lot more.
I would definitely add The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery to your list, just packed with useful information. Seed to Seed by Suzanne Ashworth would certainly be useful in teaching you how to save seeds from your garden for the next season. The title I find myself recommending the most these days is Home Grown Pantry by Barbara Pleasant. She covers the most common types of garden crops, including info on which varieties tend to be most productive, how much to plant per person, and the best ways of preserving the harvest (including recipes.)
Hello, I would like to write that I came across a book called "Fallout - How to Survive Nuclear War." I know it sounds silly, I thought so too, but I picked it up and it's actually very interesting. There are a lot of things and tricks you can learn from it. I highly recommend it, especially considering the current tensions in the world.
I will give you my first choice and the secondary choices: You want a skill set. Moreover, you want a skill set within your family because you understand that your skills are not transferable by heredity or osmosis. And, during shtf and afterwards, you want to be able have other people work on their skills. 1. get the Boy Scout handbook. Examine the requirements for certain merit badges to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Forget the concept of doing a project. Get those merit badge books . .. first aid, swimming, cooking . . . Then meet the requirements NOW and not wait. Have your significant other, any kids do the same. Yes, I was an Eagle Scout before going into the infantry. To get to that rank required planning, staffing, organizing, control and command. In the infantry an instructor spoke about injuries and survival in Vietnam. Few Eagle scouts got hurt. There were significant decreases in losses among people who had attained Star and Life scout ranks. You will have those simple books for people to read after shtf. 2. The main item is a book about the Bielski brothers. It is so horrible that I kept putting it down when I first read it. It relates how a community is created and maintained so that people survive as long as possible. Over 1000 people lived in a group in the woods in WW2 and largely survived. The people included peasants, academics, mothers, shoemakers and so forth. YOU need to know how to cooperate and organize people. You are not going to survive for a long time without other people in your circle. My background? Includes living in Afghanistan/Iran/Pakistan more than 40 years ago and not speaking the local language, not staying in western hotels, not having a doctor available, having to find the next meal, next place to stay and so forth. Remember this. I have medical skills and have used CPR/Heimlich which you should already know. I have surgical equipment, medicines. But I can not give myself first aid in many scenarios. Some one else will have to do it. If you get people in your family/circle to get those skills by a book, a youtube video, you have accomplished a lot.
I’m going to give you a big thumbs-up on Eagle Scouts. I’ve met a few adult men with those skills and have been impressed -and reassured by their training. 👍🏻
Excellent advice. Not the same, but my son and I just made it through 6 years of homelessness; that cooperation is vital. He's ex-Army, my background is in medical/legal/computers and I was a Girl Scout. We have a home now, but we're watching and preparing because we both see something is coming.
i really found "100-day Pantry: 100 Quick and Easy Gourmet Meals" useful since it helps you make meals out of nothing but canned foods, many other of the storage books assume you'll have milk or butter or eggs etc, this one is better about only using canned or shelf stable items. i went through the book, marked off what recipes i'd like to make then calculated how many of each item i'd need for 2 weeks for my household and that was the easiest way to get started w/ a 2 week supply of food. You can even group the cans together with the recipe taped to the front in bags or boxes so it's super easy on the cook.
@@kristadaly Perhaps you aren’t familiar with Kindle. You pre-download books to it and even a basic one can store a huge amount of data. The batteries last for weeks of use (without the backlight) and I have tested that it is very easy to get a charge from even a smaller usb solar panel. A usb power bank that can charge my iPhone 14 pro max 1.8 times can give me a full, multi-week’s use Kindle charge at least six times. I quit the test after that. ;) Editing to say that you can also get pdf documents on them if you have other sources of information. I do keep hard copy maps and quick info cheat sheets of conversions, basic knots, etc. This all fits in my backpack and weighs very little. Much less than one book, even with the folding small solar panel.
"stories and recipes from the great depression" vol 1 is a great book. Simple recipes and a lot of stories like my Grandma told me about what they did day to day on the farm.
I would recommend general education books. If your child’s school is suddenly used for migrant housing a copy of The Little Brown Handbook will come in handy for teaching all levels of English grammar. It covers every thing from parts of speech to siting references and organizing papers. A basic history book, dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia set, and books on science and mathematics will make sure that the children in your life are well educated. Also if your children are young, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a treasure.
I have a few cookbooks from the depression era and earlier. They are interesting, especially when they talk about preferring rabbit to groundhog or possum…
If you want to learn anything in terms of DIY learn how to fix your roof. Having ladders and attachments to get up plus some materials and a little knowledge will be invaluable
Great recommendations . I immediately ordered "Survival Medicine and When All Hell Breaks Lose". I try to order a prepping or homesteading book every paycheck.
My favorite books are The Forager's Guide by Nicole Apelian, Botany in a Day by Thomas Elpel, and No Work Gardening by Ruth Stout. I use these all the time. I have a lot of other how to books, but these would bug out with me. I dehydrate most of my garden, and have canned for decades. Canning jars are needed. I have a Blue Book Canning Guide. I have been collecting rainwater for years, a Sawyer mini filter in your backpack is critical, I use mine for my daily drinking water.
Great video, Chris!.. as usual. I need more of these as well. I would also recommend we also practice some rather than just have reference manuals. Practice a day of eating only foraged food. Practice 2 days without electricity. Practice gardening. Practice with your firearm. I am guilty of reading too much and not practicing enough as well. My goal this year is to combine more learning with Practice. It is onethingto have a book describing how to start a fire in the rain from a ferro rod and another entirely to having done it 10 times. I tried to fast for 24 hours after watching Chris Hemsworth’s series. It’s good. But in dealing with a schedule where I’m home for 2 weeks and gone for 2 weeks and a 12 year old that isn’t a morning person, that Gary ended at 10am. Don’t let theory let in the way of practicality.
If I may add and for complete self sufficiency and what has helped me as an urban farmer; "The Encyclopedia of Country Living, 50th Anniversary Edition: The Original Manual for Living off the Land & Doing It Yourself."
One additional recommendation, I got a Medical dictionary and have been collecting other dictionaries so that I could look up subject-specific terms off-grid. All PDF'd, all on flash drives.
We have quite a few of those books, or similar titles. The Ball canning book is the first book for food preservation. I highly recommend this book. I have about 40 books in the categories you touched on. I am currently reading the books on foraging, herbal medicine. I have learned many skill by reading: food preservation, wine making, and gardening. I gave Dave Ramsey’s book to our kids and siblings. Thanks for the list.
Readers Digest guide to sewing! It helped me learn, and gave me the courage to tackle things like quilts, curtains, wedding gowns, baby clothes and underwear! And bathing suits! And upholstery!
One area you have overlooked is mental preparedness and getting your emotional mindset in place before a disaster. Jim Phillips recommends these 3 books: The Raft Hardcover by Robert Trumbull, Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales and Miracle in the Andes by Nando Parrado.
This is the aspect the all overlook and they overlook it because these people are not about survival; they are about preying on Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt to sell Paranoia and Products. By the way, I have read all three and just finished reading Deep Survival for the fourth time. SINGE BEST survival book EVER. Cheers for mentioning this.
Yes I have "Sonoran Desert Food Plants" by Charles Kane, he writes really good guides for the southwestern US. I am sure other regions of the country have authors that specialize in their area.
Some books about your City / village; old mines abandoned houses Factories Bunkers, metro tubes, forts! In the Netherlands acient fortifcations Caves , Castles, underground cemetries, Hunnebedden ( neolithicum stone structures , local flora & fauna. Basic science ( fysicd, chemistry , biology) microclimate, weather dynamics like the dominant winddirection!

A water book that covers all aspects would be good. Where to locate water in ground, in plants, collection, wells, distills, filters, rain catchment, and just the science of wAter.
One really good book for those with smaller gardens is “Veg in One Bed: How to Grow an Abundance of Food in One Raised Bed, Month by Month” by Huw Richards.

Thanks for sharing your favorite books. I have quite a few of the ones in the gardening category. Back to Basics, put out by Readers Digest, is a good one. (I've had mine since the 1970s) It touches lightly on many facets of homestead life style.

I picked up The Lost Frontier Handbook and really like it. It has sections on companion planting, raising chickens, recipes from the Old West and Great depression and many other things. I also have The Lost Ways, and The Lost Superfoods. All of them are a wealth of information on ways our ancestors used on a daily basis to survive without electricity and all.
I almost got rid of my hard copies of 30 years of the magazine - Mother Earth News - glad to have them now! Also have digital versions now on flash drive. Some of the books you recommend are some I have as well. Will look into some of these others now as well. Thank you so much for all your guidance!
Got the SAS Survival Guide when you mentioned it. I had been saying that the Boy Scouts of America handbook (as much as I hated scouting) could be used to rebuild the country. I reviewed that opinion and now disagree. I think the scouts should use SAS instead. It’s phenomenal.
Great list. I have 7 of them. The one, and possibly the #1 Book is...”The Prepper’s Blueprint” by Tess Pennington. Anytime there’s a Preppers Show or convention if Tess is there then she will always have the longest lines to meet and great. Her recommendations are awesome and often never thought of. Her recommendations on cleaning and bartering will surprise many.
@@occultustactical6138 thanks, I just added it to my order. I tried making pesto with wild greens instead of basil. It was delicious on barley bean soup. I can grow basil, but wild greens don't need care or watering. I knew it would be edible, but it was incredible.
I have a few of the ones you mentioned, and thank you for mentioning the others. A couple suggestions for you and others out there... I took about 20 such books to a print shop recently and had the spines cut off. Then I had them scan the books into PDFs for my bug-out flash drives. Then they shrink wrapped the original books for me for cache storage. If you had to bug-out you couldn't possible carry these books. Hence, PDFs on flash drive. (I've already compiled information for my closest friends on getting an older used cell phone cheap, getting the cables and small solar panels to power it, so they could view these off-grid... all protected by simple Faraday can instructions of course.)
I would recommend a prepper library include entertainment books and traditional reference books. Gonna need a dictionary, thesaurus, and even encyclopedia if you find yourself trying to teach a new generation in a world without internet. I recommend buying textbooks for grades 1-12 standard subjects. Can usually find them pretty cheap these days on the used book market.
I used to be subscribed to Outdoor Life magazine, they have a few amazing books for survival! Hunter/gather books, hunting and fishing books, emergency survival! They were the first books besides my old scouting manuals and they are super easy to read threw with lots of illustrations for ease of use!! Highly recommended!!
I'd like to add "Shelters, Shacks and Shanties - The Classical Guide to Building Wilderness Shelters" by D.C. Beard in case of having to bugout or caught out away from home.
It's not a survival book but I have learned more from them than any other and it's the book series from A. American Going home series. Way better than one second after.
I've spent an hour today opening my 3 first aid kits I carry at all times. I've washed the Stanley hard case I keep in the car. I've checked all of the batteries in the flashlights, checked condition of bandages, and dates on paracetamol and ibroprofen.
Great list for library borrowing as well - don't have to own them to read them and make notes. Especially the financial planning books. When SHTF happens, those won't be the books I'd be pulling off the shelf to help in a given situation. From the Hesperian Foundation, in addition to "Where There Is No Dentist" there is also "Where There Is No Midwife". ( I have both of these as well as the original, "Where There Is No Doctor".)

Peter Zeihan's work is pretty solid, especially when you go back to his previous work (Accidental Superpower) and see how much of that has come to pass already. Demographics, collapsing birthrates, global food supplies...it makes sense.
I went to a church program with financial peace university by dave Ramsey...i am almost out of debt...about 6 more month...had a set back, but now i am back on track again...
I have many of the books you mention. I would like to submit a suggestion. The Encyclopedia of Country Living. By Carla Emery. This book is chock full of wonderful self sufficient “old ways” It’s been around for a very long time and there are several updates. The 50th anniversary addition is the most recent.
When I became a dad I revisited the Laura Ingalls wilder catalog.the descriptive way she tells about Charles Ingalls homesteading and problem solving are worth the read. The Long Winter is the best in my opinion. Plus it’s good to read to your kids.

I've been reading John Seymour's self sufficiency book that you suggested. Certainly no fluff, it's a lot of info crammed in there. It's a well-worn ex-library book that was checked out a lot judging by the slip in the front cover! Personally I love 2nd hand books in general. It's great (but also a little sad) that you can pick up loads of these huge reference books where the subject matter won't have changed for barely anything. Not strictly "prepping" as such, but still useful grid-down information none-the-less.
I agree with all your choices. I encourage people to get good hard-cover reference books. Even if you don't read them now. If a collapse comes, we might not have the internet or other means of entertainment and you'll have plenty of reading to do. Having knowledge is far better than having stuff.
The Foxfire series books covers how people survived throughout history. They are filled with all the knowledge you need handed down from generations before us.
I have square foot gardening. It's a pretty good book! Some of these though, I'm not sure if you can buy them new. There's a book called "Bountiful Container" that talks about setting up a container garden. Love that book!
For anyone interested in hunting, target shooting or as a part of their preps get some reloading manuals because when shtf happens and the ammo manufacturers are no longer around you have the data in the books to rely on. good advice. but for some of these, especially something like medicine, it isn't enough to just have them on hand, you need to read them - in an emergency, you probably won't have time to crack open a book and start reading how to do an emergency medical treatment from stage 1. for food, I would highly recommend a book on preserving from a tried-and-true reputable source, like a Ball canning book. for Homesteading DIY, "Handy Farm devices and how to make them is really good. dated, but good for learning ideas on how to fix, make or rig up equipment, and even more so if we were in a scenario where fuel and new resale equipment and parts are hard to come by
I had to chuckle at the first book you mentioned, I was selcted to go on a course years ago, we were told we could take a book, I took that one! It got me some raised eyebrows ... When quizzed why that book, my comment was "I'm happy to learn the mindset, learn from the best ..."

If you’re looking to move away from a high-risk area, I highly recommend “Strategic Relocation” by Joel Skousen. It covers everything from topographical concerns to lines of drift and potential targets (military bases, power plants, etc). It can be hard to find but worth it.

In the infantry an instructor spoke about injuries and survival in Vietnam. Few Eagle scouts got hurt. There were significant decreases in losses among people who had attained Star and Life scout ranks.
You will have those simple books for people to read after shtf.
2. The main item is a book about the Bielski brothers. It is so horrible that I kept putting it down when I first read it. It relates how a community is created and maintained so that people survive as long as possible. Over 1000 people lived in a group in the woods in WW2 and largely survived. The people included peasants, academics, mothers, shoemakers and so forth. YOU need to know how to cooperate and organize people. You are not going to survive for a long time without other people in your circle.
My background? Includes living in Afghanistan/Iran/Pakistan more than 40 years ago and not speaking the local language, not staying in western hotels, not having a doctor available, having to find the next meal, next place to stay and so forth.
Remember this. I have medical skills and have used CPR/Heimlich which you should already know. I have surgical equipment, medicines. But I can not give myself first aid in many scenarios. Some one else will have to do it. If you get people in your family/circle to get those skills by a book, a youtube video, you have accomplished a lot.
I’m going to give you a big thumbs-up on Eagle Scouts. I’ve met a few adult men with those skills and have been impressed -and reassured by their training. 👍🏻
Excellent advice. Not the same, but my son and I just made it through 6 years of homelessness; that cooperation is vital. He's ex-Army, my background is in medical/legal/computers and I was a Girl Scout. We have a home now, but we're watching and preparing because we both see something is coming.
I have a personal library of well over 1200 books (in a 500 sq.ft. apartment!) I like to call it the "Printernet".

i really found "100-day Pantry: 100 Quick and Easy Gourmet Meals" useful since it helps you make meals out of nothing but canned foods, many other of the storage books assume you'll have milk or butter or eggs etc, this one is better about only using canned or shelf stable items. i went through the book, marked off what recipes i'd like to make then calculated how many of each item i'd need for 2 weeks for my household and that was the easiest way to get started w/ a 2 week supply of food. You can even group the cans together with the recipe taped to the front in bags or boxes so it's super easy on the cook.

Why physical copies and not Kindle? Maybe both, but you can only carry a couple of books.

@@kristadaly Perhaps you aren’t familiar with Kindle. You pre-download books to it and even a basic one can store a huge amount of data.
The batteries last for weeks of use (without the backlight) and I have tested that it is very easy to get a charge from even a smaller usb solar panel.
A usb power bank that can charge my iPhone 14 pro max 1.8 times can give me a full, multi-week’s use Kindle charge at least six times. I quit the test after that. ;)
Editing to say that you can also get pdf documents on them if you have other sources of information.
I do keep hard copy maps and quick info cheat sheets of conversions, basic knots, etc.
This all fits in my backpack and weighs very little. Much less than one book, even with the folding small solar panel.
"stories and recipes from the great depression" vol 1 is a great book. Simple recipes and a lot of stories like my Grandma told me about what they did day to day on the farm.
I would recommend general education books. If your child’s school is suddenly used for migrant housing a copy of The Little Brown Handbook will come in handy for teaching all levels of English grammar. It covers every thing from parts of speech to siting references and organizing papers. A basic history book, dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia set, and books on science and mathematics will make sure that the children in your life are well educated. Also if your children are young, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a treasure.
I have a few cookbooks from the depression era and earlier. They are interesting, especially when they talk about preferring rabbit to groundhog or possum…

If you want to learn anything in terms of DIY learn how to fix your roof. Having ladders and attachments to get up plus some materials and a little knowledge will be invaluable
Great recommendations . I immediately ordered "Survival Medicine and When All Hell Breaks Lose". I try to order a prepping or homesteading book every paycheck.
My favorite books are The Forager's Guide by Nicole Apelian, Botany in a Day by Thomas Elpel, and No Work Gardening by Ruth Stout. I use these all the time.
I have a lot of other how to books, but these would bug out with me.
I dehydrate most of my garden, and have canned for decades. Canning jars are needed. I have a Blue Book Canning Guide.
I have been collecting rainwater for years, a Sawyer mini filter in your backpack is critical, I use mine for my daily drinking water.

Great video, Chris!.. as usual. I need more of these as well. I would also recommend we also practice some rather than just have reference manuals. Practice a day of eating only foraged food. Practice 2 days without electricity. Practice gardening. Practice with your firearm. I am guilty of reading too much and not practicing enough as well. My goal this year is to combine more learning with Practice. It is onethingto have a book describing how to start a fire in the rain from a ferro rod and another entirely to having done it 10 times. I tried to fast for 24 hours after watching Chris Hemsworth’s series. It’s good. But in dealing with a schedule where I’m home for 2 weeks and gone for 2 weeks and a 12 year old that isn’t a morning person, that Gary ended at 10am. Don’t let theory let in the way of practicality.
If I may add and for complete self sufficiency and what has helped me as an urban farmer; "The Encyclopedia of Country Living, 50th Anniversary Edition: The Original Manual for Living off the Land & Doing It Yourself."
One additional recommendation, I got a Medical dictionary and have been collecting other dictionaries so that I could look up subject-specific terms off-grid. All PDF'd, all on flash drives.
i use sd cards in a pill bottle i can carry the library of congressand and more and i have a boot able usb flash of Linux os
“Five Acres and Independence” is a good book to have as well. I used it a lot when I had a small organic farm.
For Gardening, you may want to add a seed saving book.
We have quite a few of those books, or similar titles. The Ball canning book is the first book for food preservation. I highly recommend this book. I have about 40 books in the categories you touched on. I am currently reading the books on foraging, herbal medicine. I have learned many skill by reading: food preservation, wine making, and gardening.

Readers Digest guide to sewing! It helped me learn, and gave me the courage to tackle things like quilts, curtains, wedding gowns, baby clothes and underwear! And bathing suits! And upholstery!
One area you have overlooked is mental preparedness and getting your emotional mindset in place before a disaster. Jim Phillips recommends these 3 books: The Raft Hardcover by Robert Trumbull, Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales and Miracle in the Andes by Nando Parrado.
This is the aspect the all overlook and they overlook it because these people are not about survival; they are about preying on Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt to sell Paranoia and Products. By the way, I have read all three and just finished reading Deep Survival for the fourth time. SINGE BEST survival book EVER. Cheers for mentioning this.

Yes I have "Sonoran Desert Food Plants" by Charles Kane, he writes really good guides for the southwestern US. I am sure other regions of the country have authors that specialize in their area.

I picked up The Lost Frontier Handbook and really like it. It has sections on companion planting, raising chickens, recipes from the Old West and Great depression and many other things. I also have The Lost Ways, and The Lost Superfoods. All of them are a wealth of information on ways our ancestors used on a daily basis to survive without electricity and all.
I almost got rid of my hard copies of 30 years of the magazine - Mother Earth News - glad to have them now! Also have digital versions now on flash drive. Some of the books you recommend are some I have as well. Will look into some of these others now as well.

Got the SAS Survival Guide when you mentioned it. I had been saying that the Boy Scouts of America handbook (as much as I hated scouting) could be used to rebuild the country. I reviewed that opinion and now disagree. I think the scouts should use SAS instead. It’s phenomenal.
Get the older version of the boy scout handbook. Has a lot more real survival skills in it. Sorta like the sas survival guide light edition. 😁

Great list. I have 7 of them. The one, and possibly the #1 Book is...”The Prepper’s Blueprint” by Tess Pennington. Anytime there’s a Preppers Show or convention if Tess is there then she will always have the longest lines to meet and great. Her recommendations are awesome and often never thought of. Her recommendations on cleaning and bartering will surprise many.

I tried making pesto with wild greens instead of basil. It was delicious on barley bean soup. I can grow basil, but wild greens don't need care or watering. I knew it would be edible, but it was incredible.

I have a few of the ones you mentioned, and thank you for mentioning the others. A couple suggestions for you and others out there... I took about 20 such books to a print shop recently and had the spines cut off. Then I had them scan the books into PDFs for my bug-out flash drives. Then they shrink wrapped the original books for me for cache storage. If you had to bug-out you couldn't possible carry these books. Hence, PDFs on flash drive. (I've already compiled information for my closest friends on getting an older used cell phone cheap, getting the cables and small solar panels to power it, so they could view these off-grid... all protected by simple Faraday can instructions of course.)
And a dry area/ box to keep them in.
A zip-lock bag will help. And a Fireproof box for the better books as well.
I would recommend a prepper library include entertainment books and traditional reference books. Gonna need a dictionary, thesaurus, and even encyclopedia if you find yourself trying to teach a new generation in a world without internet. I recommend buying textbooks for grades 1-12 standard subjects. Can usually find them pretty cheap these days on the used book market.
Art Of War is another must have. You will need it.

I used to be subscribed to Outdoor Life magazine, they have a few amazing books for survival! Hunter/gather books, hunting and fishing books, emergency survival! They were the first books besides my old scouting manuals and they are super easy to read threw with lots of illustrations for ease of use!! Highly recommended!!

I've spent an hour today opening my 3 first aid kits I carry at all times. I've washed the Stanley hard case I keep in the car. I've checked all of the batteries in the flashlights, checked condition of bandages, and dates on paracetamol and ibroprofen.
Great list for library borrowing as well - don't have to own them to read them and make notes. Especially the financial planning books. When SHTF happens, those won't be the books I'd be pulling off the shelf to help in a given situation.
From the Hesperian Foundation, in addition to "Where There Is No Dentist" there is also "Where There Is No Midwife". ( I have both of these as well as the original, "Where There Is No Doctor".)

Peter Zeihan's work is pretty solid, especially when you go back to his previous work (Accidental Superpower) and see how much of that has come to pass already. Demographics, collapsing birthrates, global food supplies...it makes sense.
peter zeihan also thinks the usa is immune to disasters and thinks china will collapse before we do. full of bs.

The Encyclopedia of Country Living. By Carla Emery. This book is chock full of wonderful self sufficient “old ways” It’s been around for a very long time and there are several updates. The 50th anniversary addition is the most recent.
Years ago I started printing info off and laminating them putting them in binders.
When I became a dad I revisited the Laura Ingalls wilder catalog.the descriptive way she tells about Charles Ingalls homesteading and problem solving are worth the read. The Long Winter is the best in my opinion. Plus it’s good to read to your kids.
Thank you - we do already have some of those books (Survival medicine, carrots love tomatoes, rich dad poor dad, nuclear war survival skills, ball complete book of home preserving & some others - herbal antibiotics, alchemy of herbs, alone and unafraid).

I've been reading John Seymour's self sufficiency book that you suggested. Certainly no fluff, it's a lot of info crammed in there. It's a well-worn ex-library book that was checked out a lot judging by the slip in the front cover! Personally I love 2nd hand books in general. It's great (but also a little sad) that you can pick up loads of these huge reference books where the subject matter won't have changed for barely anything. Not strictly "prepping" as such, but still useful grid-down information none-the-less.
I agree with all your choices. I encourage people to get good hard-cover reference books. Even if you don't read them now. If a collapse comes, we might not have the internet or other means of entertainment and you'll have plenty of reading to do. Having knowledge is far better than having stuff.
The Foxfire series books covers how people survived throughout history. They are filled with all the knowledge you need handed down from generations before us.
I have square foot gardening. It's a pretty good book! Some of these though, I'm not sure if you can buy them new.
There's a book called "Bountiful Container" that talks about setting up a container garden. Love that book!

I ordered a book on prepping. When it came the cover was correct, the inside was about fixing engines. I have heard of this happening to others.
For anyone interested in hunting, target shooting or as a part of their preps get some reloading manuals because when shtf happens and the ammo manufacturers are no longer around you have the data in the books to rely on. So i suggest the following manuals made by hornady, nosler, lyman, sierra, and lee precision
one set of books that I love to review is the "Foxfire " books not only very entertaining but very informative on planting and storing food.
The Lost Ways hard cover is a good resource as is the Lost Book of herbal remedies.

but for some of these, especially something like medicine, it isn't enough to just have them on hand, you need to read them - in an emergency, you probably won't have time to crack open a book and start reading how to do an emergency medical treatment from stage 1.
for food, I would highly recommend a book on preserving from a tried-and-true reputable source, like a Ball canning book.
for Homesteading DIY, "Handy Farm devices and how to make them is really good. dated, but good for learning ideas on how to fix, make or rig up equipment, and even more so if we were in a scenario where fuel and new resale equipment and parts are hard to come by

If you’re looking to move away from a high-risk area, I highly recommend “Strategic Relocation” by Joel Skousen. It covers everything from topographical concerns to lines of drift and potential targets (military bases, power plants, etc). It can be hard to find but worth it.
