You critics are being ridiculous. This is obviously a rehearsal. Kiri even has a pen in her hand to mark up the score, and she looks at Previn to question him at one point. In the opening section, she's covering her mouth with her hand, something no singer would do in performance. It's not until it gets to the part in English that they're even trying very hard, and even then they're just testing things out. If you think musicians play "all out," all the time, you're nuts. This is the equivalent of a Tuesday run-through of a game plan by an NFL team getting ready to play on Sunday. They practice, they rehearse, they refine until they have it right for performance time. And it still sounds goo. Kiri Te Kanawa at 40 percent is better than 95 percent of the people who think they can sing.
Caught this rendition a few years ago on a PBS special - have been trying to find it again ever since - I believe there was an album/disk named "Kiri Te Kanawa - Sidetracks" that was released shortly afterwards that featured these wonderful performers - thank you so much for the upload
@windstorm1000 well Autumn Leaves is not associated with Broadway and really, musicians can sing anything they love, nobody is forced to listen to it against their will, and an artist wouldnt really serve themselves or listeners by placing limits on their creativity or how much love they express both of these pieces are quite beautiful to me, and I am very very glad to have them available to listen to -Love
KIRI ES UNA ARTISTA MUY INTELIGENTE Y SUMAMENTE VERSÁTIL,TIENE UNA GRAN INTUICIÓN PARA CANTAR Y UNA GRAN SENSIBILIDAD, EN UNA PALABRA...MUY "COMPLETA".
@theblueangel28 You are right--we go to the concerts of singers we enjoy, or buy CD's of people we like listening to--it IS taste thing. I really liked what you said about artists not putting limits on their creativity--That's one of the most intelligent, perceptive comments I've heard about artists in general here. Thanks for broadening my tastes--I still prefer certain things, but don't we all. Love to you back.
LIsten to the first minute and a half of this vid. I ask you: Who knew that such a beautiful tune was eclipsed under all the vapid, insipid ornamentation w/which Autumn Leaves is usually "adorned"?
Why did he give that look at the beginning? Because she started a bit falls? Since you told me, now i know cause Ella never was. Jazz singers do not sing falls. It's still acceptable to be falls in classical world.
Herr Previn.
windstorm 1000: she started out as a pop singer. If you were able to see and hear this whole DVD you would see the way the music evolves between these four wonderful musicians. This bit we have watched here is an early rehearsal and Kiri is learning to sing jazz, which is another animal entirely. I don't think she sings anything like an opera singer here. Have you heard her sing opera? Breath windstorm, let it wash over you - it will be a much more enjoyable experience. With respect.
Is is possible to get a DVD of this session? When and where was it done? Her version of "It Never Was You" borders on unbelievable. Previn always helps her rise above even herself.
I love all of these musicians, but their styles are incompatible. It doesn't work for me. I LOVE Dame Kiri doing standards in her own beautiful style and of course Andrew Previn can do no wrong in jazz or in classical, whatever he chooses, but not together.
I realise that this was a practice session but it was still a great disappointment. Feuilles Mortes is a french song and various French singers have sung the definitive versions!
Is this really sung by Kiri Te kanawa ? I cannot even recognize Kanawa's voice. If this isreally sung by Kiri Te Kanawa, it is a great disappointment for me.
From head voice to chest voice is harder. Twice as many muscles used and not supposed to be with vibrato, for American jazz songs. She tried to step out of the box, once a while.
Why do opera singers insist on doing pop? Its like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole!! is it conceit that just because you can hit high c's you fell entitled to do Broadway??? These are two voice types folks.
Her singing is angelic. And Previn plays all the right notes in the right order!
Eric had all the right notes too!! Order's just overrated.
What a beautiful woman.😍
What she says at the end is profound. It's what makes all the difference.

Beautifull !
Kiri es única, gracias por el post.
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sung this with such a smooth flavor during this rehearsal, I'm already melting with fluffy clouds and love 💜🌺💮🌸✨ BRAVO 🌹🥀🌷🌺🌸💐
Prévin accompanies so masterfully! Gosh, that's something. Autumn Leaves "chanson" is beautifully intimately sung too.
This is a perfect arrangement and performance! Incredibly beautiful. Breath-taking.
Love her interpretation of the music.
Thank you for this upload - "It Never Was You" just leaves me speechless every time I play it.
DAME KIRI IT WAS AMAZING
Effortless and very graceful in articulating all the notes. Amazing gift...blessings😊❤️
I'm in love of this Dame
Bravo for ever
4 legends!

Just luv what she did to the kurt weil song!
Wow
Kiri is beautiful, voice is very pretty
Kiri is adorable and she "Does make a wonderful noise" Andre obviously holds her in high esteem
@windstorm1000 well Autumn Leaves is not associated with Broadway

WOWOWOWOWOWOW che naturalezza. BRAVISSIMA!
lovely! thanks for sharing :)
Perfect.
She really does sing It Never was You better than other versions I've heard. The phrasing comes to life when she sings it
There are only a few version of this song that I really like....Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's rendition here is definitely on my top list.
Agreed, my first choice worked Wynton Marsallis, who has also performed with Kathleen Battle, I love "crossover" performances
I enjoyed it. lovely voice.
Maravilhosos!!!!!
Addictive!...
Thank you for this. I found it very enjoyable. Thank you.
KIRI ES UNA ARTISTA MUY INTELIGENTE Y SUMAMENTE VERSÁTIL,TIENE UNA GRAN INTUICIÓN PARA CANTAR Y UNA GRAN SENSIBILIDAD, EN UNA PALABRA...MUY "COMPLETA".
Scintillating ~ isn't it great when a classical singer sings jazz? Pow!!

LIsten to the first minute and a half of this vid.
I ask you: Who knew that such a beautiful tune was eclipsed under all the vapid, insipid ornamentation w/which Autumn Leaves is usually "adorned"?
The bassist is Ray Brown who was married to Ella Fitzgerald
Why did he give that look at the beginning? Because she started a bit falls?
Since you told me, now i know cause Ella never was. Jazz singers do not sing falls. It's still acceptable to be falls in classical world.
ivh1968 ui
Baez' rendition is awsome also! I must confess I love Dame Kiri te Kanawa.
Julie sings It Never was You with Andrew as well in Japan 1995.
She sings the hell out of this song. Judy Garland acts the hell out of it. TH-cam is wonderful.
Kiri is charmant like always
previn says that she should be given the copy write on this tune..I agree
Herr Previn. Ich habe mit Ihrer Frau Mutter bei Fritzi Massary Tee getrunken. Das ist lange her ... A JEWEL OF A RECORDING. PEOPLE YOU ARE MISSING A TREAT.
When Diva is more "than - just a Diva"...

She was so pretty in these New York sessions, I think Ray Brown had a crush on her!
They may respect each other, but obviously they are not relaxed. After all, the result is perfect and fits to the sophisticated song.
The bassist was Ray Brown…. Ex-husband of Ella Fitzgerald.
A beautiiful traitress.
????
is michelle legrand?
There is only one singer for this - Jo Stafford.
I quite agree ; Jo Stafford’s voice flows like the leaves. Most singers drag this song ,even Doris Day
and I would have to be her no.1 fan.
nie but it is obvious that KTK does not understand much about French laguage. Still, Jacques Prevert might have smiled.
Volume is too low
Respect to KTK but this is not really her thing. After Yves Montand no-one should sing Fueilles Mortes.
I love all of these musicians, but their styles are incompatible. It doesn't work for me. I LOVE Dame Kiri doing standards in her own beautiful style and of course Andrew Previn can do no wrong in jazz or in classical, whatever he chooses, but not together.
Way too much bass
I realise that this was a practice session but it was still a great disappointment. Feuilles Mortes is a french song and various French singers have sung the definitive versions!

She intendedly to sing in a much relaxed and soft voice, which I think is a piece of jewellery.
From head voice to chest voice is harder. Twice as many muscles used and not supposed to be with vibrato, for American jazz songs. She tried to step out of the box, once a while.
Honey give your head a shake
She showcases her extraordinary talent to perfection in this rehearsal.

are you an imbecile, or merely a moron?
Perhaps because in Kiri's case she was singing songs like this before coming to England to study as an opera singer?
