Jazzgipfel, Liederhalle, Stuttgart, Germany 13th July 1988. Chick Corea: piano John Patitucci: bass Tom Brechtlein: drums Bobby McFerrin: vocals Amazing performance !
how can you have such clean bending on a bass (double bass? sorry english is not my first language) ? everythings incredible but that just gave me chills.
God......this makes me happy to be alive....listening, smiling, delighting, wowing, envying, crying, wishing I had a third of this talent. Chick and Bobby are amazing.
I saw Bobby in concert in Tampa maybe five or so years ago. Chick was in the audience sitting in the seat in front of me. I didn't realize until Bobby introduced him and welcomed him to the stage. What an awesome concert. Living legends!
That build-up at 12:20 is one of the greatest moments in the history of Jazz. The interaction, the creativity, the tension- damn, I am an adult man and I wet my pants everytime I get to hear this passage!
I was there in 1988 and it was incredible! If I remember correctly, the concert started with a delay because Chick was not satisfied with the piano tuner. RIP and thanks for the music.
Watching these musicians interact is like watching two professors talk about the height of their works with gusto. I do not understand everything they say to each other but I can understand the energy and power of the exchange not to mention the passion that comes with what they do.
I heard Bobby say, once, that he visualized himself performing in front of huge appreciative audiences, without really knowing what instrument he was to be playing...
Bobby leader!Quel pied!
yup. how many more hours of "sing like the stars" exercises do i have to do before i get that , PLEEEESE!???? answer: many, many ,many more, :( but it's fun to practice! ;)
Their interaction reminds me of how I interact with my friend. He's a guitarist and I play sax, so we would trade 4's with each other and just delve into chords not even in the chart. It was great.
Collab made in heaven, to my ears...two of my favorites from different times in my life (obviously Chick MUCH earlier than Bobby). Has there ever been a voice more agile than Bobby's?
I was lucky to attend a 5-day workshop with Bobby McFerrin and his then-vocal group, Voicestra, at the Omega Institute about a dozen years ago. It was like being in the presence of a not-yet-ascended master whose prayers were all musical vocalizations, which we were led to participate in. There were professional musicians from all over the world who'd flown in for it; some couldn't even speak English, but they understood the music. I'm a total amateur with no professional aspirations, but I've always wanted to be freer about singing than I had been, so I participated with gusto and mostly on-pitch. Five of the best days of my life. And twice a day, we sang w/Bobby - and yes, one of the songs we worked on was Autumn Leaves. But it never, ever sounded like this!
Amongst the very finest renditions of Autumn Leaves I've ever heard - this is SPIRITUAL FLIGHT right there and then. I'd have flown home if I'd have been at this awesome concert on hearing this tune. THANK YOU!
he's gotten so much better. true master of the craft. he now has his own languages where instead of only oo's and ee's he sounds like he's speaking a different tongue. think simlish lol. and some sound african, european, indian, asian. dude is a genius. and his intonation is so much better now, he truly sounds like an instrument, all notes are locked in pitch-wise.
It's not often as you grow up that you continue to get your mind blown by new performances, few and far between nowadays; I lived through this and it passed me by completely until now. Colour me blown away - thanks so much for posting. Really appreciate it. Superlative performance.
Here are three plus one gentlemen taking this golden oldie to town. I'd suggest that the critics get themselves an education. This is pretty sparkling sort of stuff. Good old Bobby is a mad driving force. A very enjoyable moment. Thank you for sharing Vladan.
Bobby is a mad genius of a musician, Chick Corea is a legend. Put them together & you get a wonderful alchemy. The critics don't know " bee from bulls - foot ", as my dad use to say.
John Patitucci literally translates into Truly Inspired. It's a wonder the stage itself didn't combust into flames with the band and audience running for their very lives and loving every minute of it.
MI EMOZIONO COME UN BAMBINO AD ASCOLTARE QUESTA PERFORMANCE! IL JAZZ E' QUESTO VERSATILITA', INNOVAZIONE, INTUIZIONE,GENIALITA', NON E' MAI LA SOLITA MINESTRA RISCALDATA.. ODDIO, E' ANCHE VERO CHE QUESTO E' POSSIBILE ANCHE E SOLO GRAZIE ALL'ENORME BRAVURA DEI MUSICISTI CHE IN QUESTA BAND E' DI UN LIVELLO ALTISSIMO!!!
Always wanted to see a collab between these two musical geniuses. I knew it would be NUTS, and it is, in a very good way. I don't think that bass player knows what a bassist is "supposed" to do...and it's awesome.
go pay to see their duo tour, coming to Europe soon. peripherally supporting Scientology well aside, it's quite well even more bloody fucking amazingly beautiful than this trio setting.. if you have the guts, you can go up and sit in and trade riffs with Bobby. i did, i blew chunks, but i did it. i am the idiot at the 2013 Frankfurt show 2who instead of listening and interacting with BOBBY and CHICK O MY GOD! (which is the whole point and goal) on a monk tune, "mysterio" i think, just opened my mouth and did some very not interesting scatting and Bobby goes, "uh,,just go ahead, man" and then cut me off... oh well...:p
Great musical performance as always but kudos to the camera man's last shot where he is tight on Bobby, slowly pulls out and tilts down to Chick's hands racking focus with Bobby still in frame out of focus. A masterful shot.
It's like a kid playing with adults. Bobby's mind is in Looney Tunes Land most of the time, and with his amazing talent, he transcends what is perceived as complicated music to most of the worlds population, and helps create something that anyone, from a toddler to a world war I veteran, can take great joy from.
This is awesome. It capitulates all that is jazz improvisation. Autumn Leaves by Johnny Mercer is a beautiful standard and this quartet dignifies it to the max.
Guys, you are the best I have listened to for a long time. I really love abstract music. I t gives one a break form the drab of usual one. Bobby you are incredible
What a fantastic performance! Corea and Bobby are both geniuses not to mention the rythm section is also great! What a great amout of creative power they all bring to music with that joy and flow and easyness when they play like monsters! Amazing. that's music. But people stop makin' comments on their look... you have to just accept everyone looked bad in the 80's, that's a fact of life... Enjoy the music.
John Patitucci. What a bassist. ❤
Jazz + mullet = The Jullet. You can't stop it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
John Mulletucci
Chick and his ability to listen and respond and learn from, has and always will be his best attribute. Miles knew it.
Po Tato Exactly
This ones always something to return to whenever I feel like I’ve lost some love for music. Always an inspiration. RIP Chick
@Ronin Adrian We don't. Don't ruin a heartfelt comment with the nonsense
how can you have such clean bending on a bass (double bass? sorry english is not my first language) ? everythings incredible but that just gave me chills.
True
I feel the exact same way
Exactly.
God......this makes me happy to be alive....listening, smiling, delighting, wowing, envying, crying, wishing I had a third of this talent. Chick and Bobby are amazing.
RIP Chick Corea, what a listener, what a musician, what a guy!
Amen
Learned So Much About Music In 15 Minutes
More than in many so called lessons, this is the power that ear the top musicians have
I saw Bobby in concert in Tampa maybe five or so years ago. Chick was in the audience sitting in the seat in front of me. I didn't realize until Bobby introduced him and welcomed him to the stage. What an awesome concert. Living legends!

This is the most amazing and weird jazz improvisation I've seen
The MacSo what do you mean by goo goo?
@The MacSo Please answer. What does goo goo mean.
is Bobby McFerrin even real though like I'm crying
He Is Amazing! Cry if you want to. It's ok .. I did. : - )
He's eccentric!!!😁
Eso k jajajajaj
HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Same
Watching these musicians interact is like watching two professors talk about the height of their works with gusto. I do not understand everything they say to each other but I can understand the energy and power of the exchange not to mention the passion that comes with what they do.
Only for that professors are mostly twats and they seems so cool about that.
7:55... John is amazing and his talent is simply incredible.
RIP CHICK👑💔
I heard Bobby say, once, that he visualized himself performing in front of huge appreciative audiences, without really knowing what instrument he was to be playing...
That breakdown from 7:10 - 7:40 going into the bass solo is one of the most special musical moments captured on video
Best vocal control and confidence I've ever seen.
he's pretty amazing.
the way he uses his range is amazing
try to listen Youn Sun Nah, you will allucinate
I was also amazed by Corea's control and confidence as well!
the best singer of the century, of course.
Bobby leader!Quel pied!
R. I.P. Chick corea 😔😪🙏
What a beautiful musical conversation... they shared their joy with us
THIS is perfect intonation, singers. just wow.
yup. how many more hours of "sing like the stars" exercises do i have to do before i get that , PLEEEESE!???? answer: many, many ,many more, :( but it's fun to practice! ;)
That mullet is the only mistake I've ever seen Patitucci make.
and the shirt?
KSTsonic Haahah, I didn't even recognize that! Good catch.
This comment killed me. Too freaking funny.
hahaha
hahahahahaha damn
could anybody watch this without bursting into smiles?
If you ran McFerrin's voice through AutoTune, it would come out sounding the same, he's just that good.
What a magnificent instrument! Bobby McFerrin’s voice.
Bobby McFerrin has perfect pitch. Man can he scat! Chic and his band are sooooo cool.
Their interaction reminds me of how I interact with my friend.
He's a guitarist and I play sax, so we would trade 4's with each other and just delve into chords not even in the chart. It was great.
I love the whole performance, but especially John Patitucci's approach to this tune.
Holy shit at 5:25 the goosebumps came on hard. Amazing vocal control aswel.
Collab made in heaven, to my ears...two of my favorites from different times in my life (obviously Chick MUCH earlier than Bobby). Has there ever been a voice more agile than Bobby's?
I have watched this SO many times.
2018... still old gold time
Bobby‘s vocals are out of this world as usual. And with such musicians around him he can shine even brighter. Insane talent combined 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I was lucky to attend a 5-day workshop with Bobby McFerrin and his then-vocal group, Voicestra, at the Omega Institute about a dozen years ago. Fantastic! This is exactly why Jazz is my favorite genre of music!
completely captures the joy and color of autumn… creativity, virtuosity and pure playful delight!
Amongst the very finest renditions of Autumn Leaves I've ever heard - this is SPIRITUAL FLIGHT right there and then. I'd have flown home if I'd have been at this awesome concert on hearing this tune. THANK YOU!
Amen

Love the spontaneous changes into double time (be it full double time or just the changes in double time), so cool.
QUÉ MARAVILLOSO DÚO!!!! EL GENIO "MULTIINSTRUMENTISTA VOCAL"·, COMO LO LLAMO Y ESE PIANO INIGUALABLE!!!! A DISFRUTAR!!!
Even though my ears are not trained to fully understand this genius performance right now, I still appreciate it =P
I WANNA LAUGH AND CRYYY FUCCCCKKKK
he's gotten so much better. true master of the craft. he now has his own languages where instead of only oo's and ee's he sounds like he's speaking a different tongue. think simlish lol. and some sound african, european, indian, asian. dude is a genius. and his intonation is so much better now, he truly sounds like an instrument, all notes are locked in pitch-wise.

Business in the front; party in the back...
RIP KING
this is the greatest thing i've ever seen
Holy shit. The perfect combination of egregious trims and beyond brilliant music.
Howard Stern sure can play piano
And that bloke in pyjamas who works at Jiffy Lube can play a mean bass solo.
Hoo hoo Robin watch me jam
guy thinks he's playing a clarinet
LOL !! But come on,,,Give Chic props Man !!!!
Dice Man
Te voy a extrañar, Chick.
Voice improvisation, LOVE IT!!!
The Patitucci tone..... Killer man...!!!

Bobby has always been my favorite jazz singer . Ever since "Return to Forever" Uh , oh,,, Just showed my age! LOL !!
Holy shit, why wasn't I born yet!!! :(
Best combo ever!!!
louis-paul Roosen My thoughts exactly.
+louis-paul Roosen the beauty of being born at the exact time you were is that you have even more great art to absorb...
I laughed so much with his interpretation. But I recognize that this is real music, and the best improvisation I have ever seen.
"a true lesson in creativity”
Indeed the kaleidoscopic collision/collusion of “yes-and“ practicum.
John Patitucci literally translates into Truly Inspired. It's a wonder the stage itself didn't combust into flames with the band and audience running for their very lives and loving every minute of it.
Bobby is a force of nature.
MI EMOZIONO COME UN BAMBINO AD ASCOLTARE QUESTA PERFORMANCE! IL JAZZ E' QUESTO VERSATILITA', INNOVAZIONE, INTUIZIONE,GENIALITA', NON E' MAI LA SOLITA MINESTRA RISCALDATA.. 5:30 this whole ending to the solo is literally hard to believe
Yes. Left the best for last.
So sexy real-time interaction, this blows my mind (and cardiostimulator too).
go pay to see their duo tour, coming to Europe soon. peripherally supporting Scientology well aside, it's quite well even more bloody fucking amazingly beautiful than this trio setting.. if you have the guts, you can go up and sit in and trade riffs with Bobby.

6:13- 6:17 how do you even think of playing that line. Holy genius
i used your replay button a couple times, now that lick is gonna be stuck in my head
Bobby McFerrin is so phenomenally gifted! He goes way off the gragh and the chart! Thank you so much for posting this video!!!🕊☺💛
Great musical performance as always but kudos to the camera man's last shot where he is tight on Bobby, slowly pulls out and tilts down to Chick's hands racking focus with Bobby still in frame out of focus. A masterful shot.
A brilliant performance. Wow amazing! Wish i could see them live. So uplifting!
It's like a kid playing with adults. Bobby's mind is in Looney Tunes Land most of the time, and with his amazing talent, he transcends what is perceived as complicated music to most of the worlds population, and helps create something that anyone, from a toddler to a world war I veteran, can take great joy from.
This is my favorite arrangement of this song. Only these two sirs could take autumn leaves and come up with this.
such a groove the entire time
This is awesome. It capitulates all that is jazz improvisation. Autumn Leaves by Johnny Mercer is a beautiful standard and this quartet dignifies it to the max.
What Bobby does at 3:30 is the most complex harmonic live I've ever heard from a vocalist.
Guys, you are the best I have listened to for a long time. I really love abstract music. I t gives one a break form the drab of usual one. Bobby you are incredible
What an exquisite way of having fun! 😀 these people are CRAZY!😍👏
Просто невероятный дуэт
The simple openings through which all the water in the world filters to quench the thirst of the dehydrated.
There's nobody in the known or unknown universe, this planet or otherwise like Bobby McFerrin
Amazing video! 3 great instrumentalist plus Bobby: I had the great honor to improvise with him on stage at Ravenna's Alighieri Theatre
Pure musical delight! An exciting and fun experience
These boys swing like mad. Which permits me to forgive Dave Weckl's mullet. And Patitucci's, for that matter.
***** Thanks for the correction. Still... not a good haircut.
Это фантастика!
Perfection !!
Love each note these mad guys do. Keep in mind they swing in double. Mind blowing, jaw dropping, true master class.
Espectacular. Ufffffffffffffffffff.........................
the mother of all mic drops
John Patitucci Bravisimo!
Eb major baby! I love this jazz standard.
John Patitucci... unbelievable.
I love this soo soo soo much!!!!
JUST FANTASTIC (Y)
these guys are amazing!!!!
Wow simply amazing!!!
Suena como el Tumba'o del Merengue Dominicano en el 12:43 / Sound like "Dominican Merengue's Tumba'o" at 12:43
Genios!
Loved every minute of this especially the bass solo!
What a fantastic performance! Corea and Bobby are both geniuses not to mention the rythm section is also great! What a great amout of creative power they all bring to music with that joy and flow and easyness when they play like monsters! Amazing. that's music.

BOTH!? THAT'S TOO POWERFUL
I think I came twice during that bass solo 8:05.
evan williamson
That bass was crying, YES! YES! HELL F**CKING YES! 😆
My reaction exactly. :D
I don't know what I was looking for, but I found it.
Oh my goodness. This is amazing!
