- The follow up to our first video comparing the BMW e46 M3 against the e46 330ci. We had a lot of comments asking to hear what the cars sound like without music in the background. Also a lot of comments asking about Ash's hat... Hope you enjoy!

Hearing that M3 Scream down the straight gives me the goosebumps
Love the sound of the e46 m3! So unique. Can’t believe people like to eliminate the raspy/tinny sound! You can tell it’s an e46 m3 coming down the road before you see it from that glorious note!

I've owned both, 330ci for 5 years and an M3 for the last year. Whatever people say about the M3 sound, it's highly additive when you're driving. It's almost like a switch that starts blasting noise at 4k rpm

I have to say, I like the rumbling sound of the 330i stock exhaust more than the rather rattly, high-pitched sound of the M3. I'm about to put a Supersprint exhaust on my 2004 330i ZHP and I have a feeling that will be right in the middle.
For a stock exhaust the 330 does sound pretty decent. Ash likes the rasp of his m3 exhaust note, if I got an m3 one day I think I'd look at getting an exhaust that removes the rasp and make it a bit more bassy. Think you can get something called a rasp pipe that you fit up near the cats that removes the rasp
Guys That Drive That would do it... is rasp stadard on the M3 or were these removed on Ash's car?
I love that raspy high pitched raw from the M3, it's a raw primal sound it's fantastic!!

E46 M3 sounds like an angry rally car, when giving it the full beans. Induction sound is awesome, the exhaust is awesome. No stupid surging og stutter sounds, just pure combustion noise
Good to hear you've cut out the music. And that only 10 minutes after I complained about it in the first part. What an effort. Keep it up!

That 330 sounds different from other 330 because that's the performance packages (ZHP). Bigger cams do make a differences.

The 330 does sound surprisingly fruity from the outside!
We weren't actually measuring 0-60 times, more using it as a way of getting the full vocal range of the engines. Ash's first M3 attempt was hilarious, unintentional wheel spin all the way through 1st and 2nd gear until he had to stop and regain control!
0-60 times certainly something we will try and do in the future though if we do another vid with these two later down the line.

The only modification I've done to this exhaust is the golf tee trick. If you haven't done it yourself I'd recommend it. Basically it keeps the 2nd exhaust flap open at all revs, as opposed to only open above 3k revs.

never been a fan of the m3 sound. imagine paying 50 to 60k gbp for one of these back in these day and that's the sound you get. it's like someone has shoved a few 2 pence pieces up the tailpipe and that's what it sounds like rattling away. face-lift 330 all the way for an all rounder bmw.
At least back then they had 6 cylinders... nowadays a 330i is a 4cyl..

I had a manual 330ci E46 imola red convertible, it's much more of a nice manly throaty sound than the tin can sounding m3.
Great video! I'm an exhaust NVH engineer for a large OEM. The M3 sounds like the baffles may be gone, I agree the 330 here does sound better. I'm considering a 330 ci manual as a daily driver, interesting that other than outright performance and grip you both liked both cars, yes an M3 is manic but as a daily driver to rack miles on the 330 ci seems to make a lot of sense...
John Shore I love my 330, as a car that can do it all and not cost the earth to run/ keep in good condition it makes a lot of sense. Not many naturally aspirated manuals about in the same price range that are viable alternatives, especially other rwd options. I'd also agree that it's probably does make a better daily than the m3, Ash regularly mentions his m3 encourages a very different style of driving!
Guys That Drive One of my cars I have an Integra Type R DC2 (not my daily)... and it does NOT encourage a relaxed driving style with a 9000 rpm red line and LSD... I guess an M3 may be similar :) fun yes. The 330 ci would be to replace an Audi A2 too sensible and boring the
my freind lives in spain owns a 330ci.. had a new exhaust fitted sounds just like an m3 to me awsome...sound ....300 euros aparantly.....
To anyone saying the e46 sounds bad...yes the exhaus note stock sounds crappy but induction noise is fantastic. To anyone that owns the car if you want a cheaper route get some decent headers(you get what u pay for if u buy cheap u might need to bend stuff around). And something like megan supremo muffler. I had the set up and it made the car sound amazing. I have a few videos with it if any owners out there care to make their m3s sound better its a cheap way to get a great sound.

i found a 2002 e46 330ci cabrio for €6000, its from switzerland and they say its in really good condition with ~200k km on it, is it a good deal?

I had very good set up on mine sounded like exotic. The stock exhaust youre right sounds bad.
ballsworker97 in person its much more deep and better but it does get real raspy if the stock exhaust sits up for a long time.

It’s because that one has the performance package which is rare and yours might not have....performance package. (ZHP) gave it a different exhaust system than the standard car or even the sport package (ZSP). I’m personally in the market for a 330ci currently

Yep stock exhaust! Just done the golf tee modification which makes the exhaust flap stay open the whole time instead of only opening above 3k revs.

I like the 330 more. It has a more raw sound. The E46 M3 has a weird I6 sound. Nothing like it. It sounds like a cup of rice. The racecar sounds great and when u tune the S54 engine it sounds really good to but stock its just to metallic and weird.

My 2003 320i (2.2l) sounded exactly as that 330i, and it also had same looking exhaust... It sounded so beautiful, I wasn´t even thinking about aftermarket exhaust.

BMW cap, that looks ok...
330 better imo , the bills that come with the m3 are a disgrace and for what you pay there really not that fast, the 330 is a much smoother to drive more reliable motor, i have friends that have had m3,s and the trouble they had with the smg gearbox cost them amazing amounts of money compared to years of trouble free motoring of the 330ci
