Great job. I did this yesterday on a friend's vehicle, and fought that top spring on both sides. Finally had to get help to hold the shoe in place after causing the piston to pop out a few times. 🤣The struggle is REAL.
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I changed my rear drum breaks on my 2003 Accord today using your video and the video from JimTheCarGuy. The breaks have been on there since I bought the car in 2007 and just started grinding. After I opened up the passenger's side break, it turns out that the one of the pins holding the shoes had broken due to rust and the shoe was out of alignment. In either case, the shoes were worn down to the metal and needed replacement, so it was about time. Everything went similarly to your video except getting that main spring was a super difficult, I had to try several times. I missed getting the fork into the slot when putting on the spring. After 5 attempts I finally got it on. It's definitely easier if you have some help, you guys hit it right on the head with your example. In any case, big thanks for this video. It's really not that hard of a job with such good videos.
I’m a young mechanic I’m already an expert at changing drum breaks they call me the drum break guy at my school auto shop and ima be doing my Honda today just wanted to see if there was anything special I did learn a few new things like adding anti seize to the contact points and I usually don’t do that so that good to know now that’s this video was a great help 👍
Pay attention he had another guy holding shoe on right while hooking the spring. I didn't notice someone was holding it for him when I quickly viewed video while outside doing mine. Be careful if you don't have someone to hold the shoe on the right. Using vicegrips so much force is exerted trying to hook large spring onto the right shoe that that force pushed the piston in the wheel cylinder out the the right side of the cylider. That caused fluid to leak and air to get into cylinder before I could push the piston back in. Then when I thought I was done pedal went to floor because of the air, had to bleed the brakes. Instead of vicegrips use a #1 size Phillips head screwdriver or something similar so tip of screwdriver doesn't block the hole you're trying to get spring in. Hook spring on screwdriver shaft and put tip into hole spring needs to go into and pull spring with screwdriver while guiding it down screwdriver shaft into the hole in the right shoe. Also more than likely you'll need to back off on the previous adjustment in order to get new drums to slide onto brakes. It was a nightmare but it was only the second time I did drum brakes so the experience I gained made the passenger side go way faster than drivers side. Either way thanks for putting this video up
Fantastic tutorial! Thank-you so much. I used large C-clamps to hold the shoes in place when pulling the large spring. I also use a separate C-Clamp for holding the pin in place while trying to get the clip on that holds the shoe in place. For the parking brake, I finally skipped the spring washer. Thank-you again. Great job!
Bruh! Y’all saved my @$$….along with Jim the car guys vid. Thank y’all so much. So much. Y’all know which part was the PITA but after everything, I got new brakes. Thank y’all so much man 🤙
I just came home to see my husband and brother-in-law furious because they could not do the Big tight spring part thank you so much for this video thank you thank you thank you.
Do I have to grease the big spring? Also why not just use the synthetic brake grease I already have? I'm about to do this job for the first time and making sure everything is good
What size bolt do I need to remove the drum? My 04 has 272K on it and probably the original brakes. I imagine getting the drums off will be a challenge. The drum has 2 holes where you can use a bolt to assist in getting the drums off. Thanks for the video.
wrong again it's 10mm your video is the hard and long way there's no need for all that extra stuff best way is with a flat head to remove everything all springs and retainers.
Hey bro hope all is well. in reference to 2:22 of your video was there no actual spring behind the little clip with the flat slot for the pin to go through?
hi nice video, question i did my 2007 civic rear drums ,after i place the new brakes , i couldn't get the drums back on ,so i turn the adjuster until the drums went back in , after that i adjust back the adjuster until the drum would make about 1 full turn . but may E brake still goes all the way back , o and also after i drove the car for couple miles , their was a smell from the back of the car . any ideas where i could have gone wrong?
Hey matrix again when I pull up the e brake it goes back real far and when I brake the car regularly it makes a whoop whoop whoop sound is that because of the drums
David Humphrey The rear drums has shoes on them, its basically the pads for the drums, you replace it when it wears down to 1mm or when you see metal on them.
So i have an 06 accord and it started making squeaks on he braks. I took it to the mechanic and he said that it needed replacement of brake shoes. Can wear and tear of break shoes be he reason of the squeaks? Please reply
I would first inspect where the noise is coming from. If its coming from the rear, pull the drums out, inspect if its down to the minimum wear, which is 1mm on the shoes. If it's time to replace it, do a shoe replacement, and make sure to lube all the points mentioned in our video. There is 6 spots you need to lube with anti seize to prevent any noise problems as the brake parts will rub onto them and can cause noise.
Mel Matrix I believe the stock radio to the navi radio is a plug and play type of deal, make sure its an OEM navi system. I'm not too sure if aftermarket system works, you can check out some youtube video's online of people installing them.

My drum does not want to fit back on, and I adjusted everything closed it all the way and it still does not fit! What can it be?? Should I buy new drums? Please I really need the help, thank you
Lol, it happens. Just gotta keep an eye on the parts. You can also take a picture of the drum hardwares before you start removing it so you know what’s missing.
Maybe YOU can... It took ME all afternoon. I hadn't done drums in forever, and Hondas are weird, relative to most cars. Harder to do than most, imho. Experience makes a world of difference, and the right tools help a lot.
hi, I am following your video and I managed to change the shoes, but there seems to be something wrong with the breaks while driving. as I was trying to put the spring back on, I pulled the rubber top from the piston, and everything came out. I put it back in as they were, but you guys mentioned that if that does happen I should "leak the breaks"? I wanted to know what that means, thanks!
yeah... haven't seen the special tool or used it before. a giant long plier helps a lot with a buddy system :) the return spring on the Honda is a PIA! worst than the Toyota return spring.
Hey abe.. do you have any suggestions? I have done this job a few times on my 2001 Accord and 2010 Civic and I work alone and I can do every part of the job in 20 mins and spend over an hour on the main spring (alone). I can't help but think there HAS TO BE an easier way.
You wanna grip it as much to the left side of the long spring as possible so you can hook it into the hole. It’s tough but with 2 people, you can put it back in. 👍🏼
i was charged 800 dollars by a mechanic to replace both rear drums, shoes and cylinders on this car...was i completely screwed over? I was thinking it was more of a 500 dollar job
Great job. I did this yesterday on a friend's vehicle, and fought that top spring on both sides. Finally had to get help to hold the shoe in place after causing the piston to pop out a few times. 🤣The struggle is REAL.
🤣🤣🤣 yeah, this design, that spring is harder than the older generations. You definitely need 2 people to do this lol

Zermelo Did you replace the drums? A lot of the brake places in my area are charging an arm and a leg bc they all recommend replacing the drums.

That's a good way to do it, especially if you're doing things by yourself. How long did each side take you?
Guys, you did a terrific job, while having fun. Keep going on. Wishing you great things in your lives.Thank you so much!
Thank you
This video was so helpful when I did my rear brake job (98 accord). Thanks a lot!!!!
Jerzrailfan np! glad it helped!
I hate drum brakes so much even after like 20 years of doing them they are still annoying. Thanks for making this video.
lol only on this accord, the return spring is stiff, the civic drums aren’t bad
I have a 2004 Honda Accord..such a pain in the ass to do alone. xp Instructions were spot on though! Thanks!
Curtis Reip yeah that middle spring is a pain in the ass.
Thank you so much for Taking your time to Made The Video. Very Helpful 👍🏼
Bruh! Y’all saved my @$$….along with Jim the car guys vid. Thank y’all so much. So much. Y’all know which part was the PITA but after everything, I got new brakes. Thank y’all so much man 🤙
Glad it was helpful!
Simple shoes but that big spring sucks always good to have some support the shoe like you guys did
Definitely a 2 man job
Hey what happens if the piston leaks a little oil? Is that something to be worried about?
I just came home to see my husband and brother-in-law furious because they could not do the Big tight spring part thank you so much for this video thank you thank you thank you.
This video also works for '02 Accord. Thank you.
***** np
If I would have seen your video first I would have finished my car right away. Now I can't put it back together faster. Thank you.
Lol
Just dont understand why Honda t didnt use disc brakes and done..
wish I had bloody disk not drum : P
Do I have to grease the big spring? Also why not just use the synthetic brake grease I already have? I'm about to do this job for the first time and making sure everything is good
No grease on the big spring, just the spots we lubed
@@NutzAboutBolts I guess I mean the lube you put on the pin adjuster that goes into the big spring. Also thanks for replying!
@@mist_rainz yes lube that part, it’s so it’ll be easier to move back and forth when adjusting the brake shoes.
Ive been struggling with that top spring for like 3 hours
Doug days yeah, it’s a strong spring, you’ll need another person holding the shoe to prevent it from moving so you can pull it onto the hook
Mission accomplished! Got it ! Nearly needed stitches after... but ... got her!
Is there enough room to remove the Lug nut studs with the drum off? Or do you have to take the hub off in order to remove and replace them?
Is it advisable to replace the springs as well? Or what else should be replaced?
7:08 lol! This will definitely happen to me
lol happens to all of us haha
is this for a V6 3.0 6 speed as well?
What size bolt do I need to remove the drum? My 04 has 272K on it and probably the original brakes. I imagine getting the drums off will be a challenge. The drum has 2 holes where you can use a bolt to assist in getting the drums off. Thanks for the video.
+Omaha419 The size of the bolts is 8mm x 1.25mm pitch
NutzAboutBolts Thanks!
wrong again it's 10mm your video is the hard and long way there's no need for all that extra stuff best way is with a flat head to remove everything all springs and retainers.
and also to calibrate the brake is simple again flat head recommended. did mines in under 10 minutes each side
@@gripnationgaming831 Now way 10 minutes
Yeah thx a lot guys just did brakes on my 99 accord!!!! THX A LOT :)
Lord Znehlrak nice! glad you got it done without a problem :)
Hey bro hope all is well. in reference to 2:22 of your video was there no actual spring behind the little clip with the flat slot for the pin to go through?
The only big spring was that return spring we took out in the beginning
You were very helpful thank you.
+Khadjir Talian np :)
amazing, thanks - this video saved me a lot of time :-)
***** np! :)
Same procedure applies for a Honda 2001 CRV. Thanks.
Very good and helpful video. Eli Bittencourt

looks like you're doing everything right... is there a leak in the wheel cylinder?
Hey matrix again when I pull up the e brake it goes back real far and when I brake the car regularly it makes a whoop whoop whoop sound is that because of the drums
Mel Matrix I would clean and adjust the star adjuster and see if it fixes it.
NutzAboutBolts thanks im going to try that also it seems that the emergency brake doesn't stop the car from moving I hope it fixes that
Yes not to be done alone that's the trick take two guys
What if I'm a hermit and I have no friends? = /
great job
Bro you’re awesome.
How do you know if they need to be replaced or not? They dont have pads like the fronts have
David Humphrey The rear drums has shoes on them, its basically the pads for the drums, you replace it when it wears down to 1mm or when you see metal on them.
Test the emergency brake free tip
Why does Honda put disks on some Accords and drums on others? Because my 03 has disk brakes.
+sweetcheels only V6 engine has disc brakes, its for performance. The inline 4 has drums.
+NutzAboutBolts It must either by trim level or regional maybe. Because my Accord has 4 disc brakes and it's a 4 cylinder.
+sweetcheels possibly, haven't seen a 4 cylinder with rear disc, there's no need lol.
LX trim, 4cyl, is rear drums, the rest are rotors I believe
Could a man swap from drum to disk 06 accord
Good job, thank you.
So i have an 06 accord and it started making squeaks on he braks. I took it to the mechanic and he said that it needed replacement of brake shoes. Can wear and tear of break shoes be he reason of the squeaks? Please reply

When parts start flying around I lose my DIY enthusiasm.
Lol, it happens. Just gotta keep an eye on the parts. You can also take a picture of the drum hardwares before you start removing it so you know what’s missing.
Pictures good, ooga ooga.
Would be best video on web if lighting was better - excellent instruction just wish I could see some of the parts and assembly details better.
The first thing you do is remove the ebrake horse shoe retaining clip...not the other way around. You can change out a set of shoes in 15 minutes.

you want to bleed the brakes since air is introduced into the system. Follow our brake bleeding procedure for the rear shoes and you should be fine.
Thank you! Very helpful. Glad I didn't buy the $50 "special tool".

drums are a bitch , when i did this for the first time the piston came loose and squirted brake fluid , had to bleed , rotor shoes for the win !!!

i guess having an extra set of hands helps putting the big spring back. wish i had seen this sooner
what do you do if you pop the cylinder out a little on one side
