• But as much as I hate her, she did have her moments. And the story was still pretty entertaining! Just very girly, lol.

+Paulina Elizabeth N It doesn't matter what she's done in previous short stories, this is the beginning of a series, and SJM began in the worst way... By TELLING us Celaena was an assassin but NEVER showing us throughout the whole story. That is some weak storytelling. And then she demands to be respected for it? That is the pinnacle of immaturity. "Look how awesome I am, everybody clap for me." She is not a likable character. I don't think you understand that KILLING PPL FOR A LIVING would have some serious psychological effects on you, and make you very humble and reserved, either that or insane. Celaena on the other hand is just a brat with no empathy.
And as far as my critique goes, I don't go looking for mistakes to nitpick. I go into every story with an open mind, I even ignore many minor things, but when they all start to build up, it's un-ignorable and inexcusable. Such is the case here. It's very clear SJM just sat down and started writing what she would think is 'cool' for Celaena to do, and eventually formed some sort of a story out of it. And it's clear not a whole lot of thought went into it and that does not make for a book that I'd enjoy.

+stiqula I understand why you don't like the book so let me start first-off by saying I'm not criticising your opinion or anything like that. But personally I got the sense that telling us Celaena was an assassin without really showing it was a deliberate decision. Celaena thinks pretty damn highly of herself. I definitely got the sense that she thinks she's a better assassin than she is, and that the reputation Arobynn encourages actually exaggerates her abilities somewhat.
I also think that killing people for a living would have different effects on different people. In order to cope with it, and with the guilt, you'd have to develop a lack of empathy, or the ability to bury the guilt by telling yourself they deserve it/it's just how the world works, etc, which is what Celaena does.
I understand why you don't like the character because I didn't like her much either at first (I've been reading the whole series and, minor spoiler, she becomes more likeable). But I'm the sort of person who can cope with disliking the main character to quite a considerable degree. In fact, I tend to dislike books where the main character is likeable because that usually means they don't make mistakes and have no character growth. But of course, if you completely hate a character, that also makes the book unreadable.
Anyway, I'm not trying to pick an argument or anything, I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth.

Heck, this is how my sensitive character got an interest in her assasin boyfriend - she saw the sadness beneath the mask of arrogance

There is no such thing as a mary sue, the term was just made by authors who are saying 'That character does not fit my standers, MARY SUE!'
Granted there are characters who should exist, but the term mary sue is just over used.

• @EveryThingGirl238
@EveryThingGirl238 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Really, she has flaws, she had to background, she had character and nothing comes to her automatically. A mary sue isn't just 'all powerful' That is not what makes a mary sue.
What makes a mary sue is being all powerful AND having all your problems solved rather quickly.
If there is no real struggle to the plot of a character, then they would be considered a mary sue.

The worst thing about the book is declaring she is the best assassin in the world at the beginning, that’s make no god damn sense at all, she is young, good at fighting( just good, not OP), emotional, can’t make decision logically, and she is the best......What the F.....
If she is an in-experienced but talent young assassin, she has some very strong skills but also weakness that she has to working on, the story would be more interesting, and yet the author just make her a boring Mary Sue.

When I read this I felt like the author made Celaena too perfect, like "oooh she's so attractive and all the women wanna be her and all the men want her, she's witty and intelligent and can also use all these weapons, she's so tough but look how sensitive and sweet, and she's an assassin and soooo closed off but she makes a friend with a princess in five seconds, and she speaks multiple languages." I hate characters like that! I enjoyed the premise, and I enjoyed the character of Dorian and especially Nox. If I were to recommend another book with a similar premise with a well thought out love triangle, I would go with 'The Crown's Fate' by Evelyn Skye.

• @aelinaag
@aelinaag 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

(I know you may not care, and I know that this is a year late, but I'm putting a SPOILER WARNING here anyways.)
Attractive, yes. Her past explains that in later books, seeing as she's revealed to be Fae, and Fae always tend to be portrayed as beautiful/handsome creatures in most myths, legends and stories. After being in a slave mine for a year kinda changed that for a while, though. She was trained as an assassin from age eight with a master who never gave her a break and forced her to smash her own hand, or he'd do it for her. Of course she'd be good with weapons. Not to mention that rampage she went on with a pickax before finally gaining a sword. She can be sweet and sensitive, true, but her true weak points aren't really shown in this book. She speaks multiple languages because many people in the slave mine with her were from a different country, and one of them taught her while they were suffering together. She's only closed off to certain people. You'd find that if you read the other books in the series. I get that not liking the first book in a series would make you not want to read the rest, but a lot of the things make more sense if you do with this particular series. She and Nehemia essentially bond over the fact that they both know how to speak the foreign language, and their mutual dislike of Kaltain, which turned into a friendship. It's not like the friendship lasts for long, though, seeing as the princess dies halfway through the second book. Sarah slowly weaves different plans in her writing that come into play later on in the series. You say she's too perfect, but she has many flaws that you simply can't see. Flaws that you can't see in this book, and flaws that cone into play later on.
(I'm just gonna add in a little something here and say that the series gets better as it goes along.)

***Spoilers***
Something that realllllyyy got under my skin about Celaena is how she was good at frickin everything, like, sit down at a piano after not playing it for years on end and turn out a perfect tune? NO! I can't even remember a piano piece I learned a few months ago, no amount of princess training can do that.

I only read Throne of glass by Sarah J Maas, and I will continue to wonder for the rest of my life how on earth it's so popular. I don't even care how people keep saying that 'it gets better' because I hate absolutely everything about it and cannot imagine how it can be fixed. It is by far the book I hate most out of everything I have ever read. It is so refreshing to find a level-headed review for once instead of the usual baseless gushing 😣 It's such a shame too, I really don't enjoy being frustrated by books. It would have been so much better for me if I could be pleased easily.

I get the feeling that Celaena's whole character could have worked so much better if she wasn't a great assassin YET, like she was trying to become one and kept tripping over her own pride. Maybe she could have had a much better character arc where she learnt the value of humility and making mistakes and overcoming overconfidence or whatever. but instead she just looked like a massive Mary Sue lmao.

I have read books 0, 1, 2 & 3 and she never acts like an assasin, she is prone to fits of inhumane rage and crazy behaviour such as showing people her chewed food in her mouth, she makes showy entrances (assasins should be unnoticeable/untraceable) and everyone creeps up on her all the time (never hears anyone approaching) and is a bitch in general to people for no reason and hates all Caltain for being into fashion and for liking Dorian, as if she's any better.

this is literally the realest review i've ever seen. these were my exact thoughts while reading it. i was wondering if i might have read the wrong book because i just couldn't see what other people saw?
i just didn’t understand the pacing. by page 200 it just seemed like Dorian and Chaol were just taking turns barging into Celaena’s room and then trying to pretend they weren’t attracted to her. and i was actually excited to read about the challenges but Sarah J. Maas kept either breezing through them or skipping them completely. it would be like “oh and since the last page three challenges passed… but look! Dorian is in Celaena’s room again. He’s teaching her billiards!”

I could just stop at YESYESYESYES but I'll explain because let's face it I love to rant and complain.
See, my problem isn't even that Celaena is unlikeable. I love unlikeable character. It's that she's not entirely supposed to be unlikeable? I feel like I'm supposed to think 'Yeah! Celaena's awesome and sassy and wow so cool!' but she just annoys me. She's so oblivious to everything! also. I'm sorry. I just can't buy the whole she's 18 and some sort of assassin prodigy. Sorry. No. You're not. also, the whole part where Chaol has to explain to her why she needs to stay in the middle just made me smh so bad. I didn't even mind the girly stuff/descriptions of clothes; that would have been an interesting trait if the rest of Celaena wasn't so annoying. also omg that audio clip WHY. WHY.
okay I'll stop now. and this is only after reading about 150pgs :P

• @stiqula
@stiqula  9 ปีที่แล้ว +27

Story Nut Exactly. The author wants her to be cool, but fails miserably at it. I totally agree that if she'd written her to BE unlikable, that would have been great, but instead she tried to force Celaena to be something she wasn't... She wanted her character to be EVERYTHING, and it turned out a conflicting mess. YOU JUST CANT BE A DOG-LOVING, HIGH-MAINTINENCE, ENTITLED BRAT WHO SHIES AWAY FROM KILLING PPL AND THINKS SHE'S BETTER THAN EVERYONE AND ALSO BE AN ASSASSIN WHITH A HORRIBLE PAST THAT WATCHED PPL GET RAPED AND BETTEN FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR IN THE SALT MINES. NO. In reality Celaena should have been in her 20s and very fucked up, with a lot of internal issues going on, coming to terms with the idea that soon she would be free (for the first time in her life). She would NOT be stuck up and worried about such superficial bullshit like what she was going to wear next or which princeling she wanted to bang. THAT is what this story should have been. Ok, I'm done. :P

Great video! It was really funny and entertaining! I really liked listening to his point of view. I understand, and even agree with some of his points (although some of those were explained in the follow up books -like for example
the competition for the king's champion was held so the king could experiment with using the wyrdmarks to steal the strength from the other competitors. They were supposed to be training, get stronger so that Cain could use the wyrdmarks, kill them and get all that extra strength. And, in the end he would be the champion, stronger than everybody and still be under the king's control. Although the king is not even the big boss . And she is the princess of Terassen, even if she had spent all her child/teenager years being forced to train and kill.
).
But, I still like this book very much. 😬😁
Also, I think she uses 'rooms' because her room has a semi formal dining room, the bed room, bathroom and a separate room for the walk in closet. (At least, that's what I understood from the audiobook)

• @jespernielsen7646

What took me out the story was that she tells us that she knows how to use every weapon, she plays the paionoforte, she likes to read and she is the worlds best assassin. And she has learned all this in 10 years, and also during those ten years have made a reputation as being the best assassin. That's just too much for 10 yearsto make me believe she did it.
I also think Dorian was boring. He didn't know how to act around women, even though he was getting engaged a few years back. And Chaol, who is the captain of the kings guard, but never killed anybody.
And the killing is bad, but we still have deathcamps... and we don't find that problematic.

Just finished "Throne of Glass" and I'm glad to have found someone who feels the same way about this book as I do! Like you I didn't hate this book but I found it very underwhelming especially when considering all the praise it got.
I too was annoyed with many of the same things you were. Celaena felt like a Mary Sue to me. I mean, she is badass and a warrior and super beautiful and everyone loves her except the bad guys yadda yadda yadda
One thing you didn't mention but that also really bugged me: It is being repeated over and over again that she survived a death camp but I never really bought it. The way she acted it always seemed like she just spend a year at a really shitty school and not A FREAKING DEATH CAMP! Imean, when I hear death camp I think places like Ausschwitz and I'm pretty sure that the people who made it out of there alive were completely traumatized. We are only told how horrible that camp was but we never see any evidence of that in the way Calaena acts ...
Anyways, thank your for this very entertaining and funny review!

by the way, her hidden 'past' is too impossible to imagine. Scratch that. I saw it coming. It was obvious, but it would be impossible in her circumstance. She already has that awesome assassin reputation, but then you add THAT to the mix?! How special is this character? THAT special? she is too special that I can't even relate to her. Rich, athletic, gorgeous, mysterious hidden past that makes her 100x more special to ridiculous levels of Mary-Sueness...

I like the plot but not the way Sarah writes. When we start off in Endovier and Caleana sees the world outside of the labor camp for the first time in a year I would think that more describing would go into the scene. Sarah tries to make Caleana into this complex character but all I see is a happy go girl who suddenly gets angry out of nowhere. She doesn't feel like shes gone through what she has. But when Calaena starts kissing Dorian or Chaol then the author dives into detail about how they smell and the color of their eyes and the heat that shoots through Caleana's body woo hoo. Plus she forgots little things like how she keeps mentioning that no one can sneak up on the QUEEN OF ASSASINS but people somehow manage to do it everytime?! I dont know, i really like this plot and people say it gets better in heir of fire so I'm giving it a shot. Its not necessarily a bad book but it just doesnt have depth. I would only recommend this series to people who dont read in depth into characters

Side note, it's super petty, but I feel like I would have a hard time with this book purely because her name is Celaena. Like I couldn't make myself read Graceling because I couldn't deal with Katsa and Po. Some names just stick in my craw like that and I can't go on.

The "I am Calaena Sardothien, and I will not be afraid." is a actually one of the most meaningful lines. It's something Sam told her about before he died, and it is something she says throughout the entire series. When she was in the wagon on the way to Endovier, when she was terrified and heartbroken and wondering if dying would be better than a death camp, right after Sam had died brutally, she said "I am Calaena Sardothien, and I will not be afraid." Every time she's scared, that's her security blanket. You can tell I love Throne of Glass, I don't know why I clicked on this XD

DancesWithBeauty It's so poorly written and she is one of the absolutely shallowest person I've ever read about. She's a fucking shitty assassin, she can't even tell the difference between an average sized woman's footprints and a 7 foot tall mans. I could do a better job than her. It reads like poorly written Wattpad fanfiction and the story line is basic at best. She has ONE CHANCE to win her freedom and she spends it admiring herself in the mirror, napping, bitching, being a brat, reading really late at night right before challenges, and trying/failing to be a badass chick when she's just a shallow, waifish bitch. She's just an overall idiotic, generic "I'm a heroine and I'm badass but I also fall for 15 guys at once and can do anything and I can't die" character. It's just so fucking boring and it's like every other trying to be badass character ever (Katniss and Tris). I only made it through this book by running around my house yelling about how fucking imbecilic she is while my family stared. I expected a badass assassin and I got a self obsessed, romanticized, shallow idiot, needless to say I was thoroughly disappointed.

LeaTheHatless the first book was definitely the weakest book of the series. The plot gets way more complicated and unique, which is actually heavily foreshadowed in the first book a couple times.

• @songbird7879

Well I would feel like it would make more sense that if in the future books it would show that she had been forced to be an assassin and that she didn’t like it and that all she really wanted to be was just a normal person, normal girl. But then when you get into her brain and she’s like “oh I’m the best!” it’s like what is going on here? It’s true the way she acts and the way she thinks are completely contradictory.

Still lazy writing. Maybe the prequels are better but this book just betrayed my expectations. I was expecting intrigue, fantasy and murder. But all I got was a love story with some dressing. I should not have to read books that were written later in order to respect her title. Her not murdering anyone is an insult.

• @AceEverett
@AceEverett 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thanks for this video, you definitely made me laugh, and made quite a few valid points.
I was mostly annoyed by how hard the author pushed Celaena into the assassin role, while never proving it in her character or actions. People walked right up to her without her ever noticing them, she never went anywhere silently and stealthily, she was always noticed and even worse wanted to be noticed. She actually got angry that she was supposed to hide her identity and that people didn't know who she was. What assassin WANTS people to recognize them? A few times she gloated about her skill, but then was hurt that people were weary of her, afraid she might kill somebody. She had too many chances to take out people she thought were bad, but only thinks about killing people because they said something that wasn't pleasant about her or looked at her wrong. I could go on, but there's no need to. Queen of assassins, she was not.
The writing was definitely off. I noticed myself skipping a lot of the text because it wasn't useful and interesting, or it was annoying. Endless talk of dresses, getting dressed, I don't like this dress, I don't like that thing or this thing or whatever. Why did an assassin need help getting dressed every damned time? I felt a few parts were contrived to the point I started getting angry and talking at the book. Example: Celaena begins to think Nehemia is the one killing champions. This is absurd because she didn't have any real motive. If she were to kill people, it would have been the king and his noblemen, not some thieves and killers that were there for some random year long tournament in order to be the king's assassin, which never made sense either. I could write an essay and provide quotes and the whole nine, but it's not worth it unless I was to be paid for it. Too bad, I'd be really good at it.
It was an interesting story, and I could definitely see why people like it, but I had to ignore a lot of text in order to be happy with it. My mind easily recognizes most faults, and I can ignore a few small ones here and there, but every other page I was disconnected with a character (usually the main character), the plot, or thrown by the disconcerting writing. The one thing that really crushed me was that I was really hoping to see a badass main character that wasn't overpowered or didn't feel fake. Almost every MC in a book is nice but weak, nice but invincible, or a wannabe badass whose power doesn't matter cause I just want to rewrite their whole character and pay someone to have a new book made with my corrections just for me.

• @michaelamorgandoherty8871
@michaelamorgandoherty8871 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Alright, first of all. Everyone has their right to their own opinions. I will respect that so I don’t want any negative comments.
There are a lot of things I feel a lot of people who don’t like the book are focusing on. Like the towns, the books she reads.
My first point on this, no author is perfect, no amount of editing is going to fix everything to match perfectly.
Second, I feel like people are reading the one of glass as a single book. Throne of glass is NOT meant to be read as a stand alone! There are how many peoples? Six or seven, that’s off the top of my head. Plus another five or six short stories to explain even more!
If anyone who hasn’t read the books is reading this, throne of glass is merely the first chapter of our assassins life that we learn of.
Her love for dresses and being clean, everyone has a right to their own opinion. If you want a book to be realistic then the characters must have their own likes and dislikes. Hers, when you read the rest of the books, are obvious through her origin! And her up bringing! As well as the expectations of the society she lives.
Nearly everything you bring up has a response, she likes to read, that has purposes to have her meet more people and bring another setting into the book, this setting helps with the development of the plot! A plot I feel you are all looking at in small sections and not the big picture.
How many questions are left at the end of this book?
It’s been a while since I’ve read the first book and I’ve read the rest since, so I apologise if I get a little mixed up between them.
As far as I can think off the top of my head. We still haven’t the slightest clue as to why magic disappeared. We know nearly nothing of her family, her up bringing, Who Sam is, why her hatred of the king is so deep, the full details of how she ended up in the salt mines, and so so so much more that was so lightly hinted at that it would be a huge spoiler to even mention.
So for people who haven’t read the books, please give them a shot, I promise you, the blot alone is worth it, never mind how the characters develop and the new characters that come into play.
For people who have read only the first book, and didn’t bother with the rest because you didn’t like it. Give the next book a try, I promise you the plot is amazing and you will love the moments where you realise the small connections found out in the last book and remember the clues dropped in the first!
For people who have read more than the first book and still don’t like the series. Then I applaud you for giving them a good chance. Not everyone will like every book. But I only ask that you don’t tell others he book is bad just because you didn’t like it because there are many who do.
Personally if I was asked about a book I didn’t like, take the hobbit for an example. I’d tell them why, in this case I just didn’t like the writing style, nothing to do with the plot, or characters. But I would remind others that’s my personal opinion and to give it a shot anyway if they were even slightly interested.
For anyone who has read my long winded rant thank you, and I hope you take this into consideration whenever you read any book you first struggle with, I know I give book a fair chance. I not only don’t judge a book by its cover, but by chapters and even several books into the series.

I hate when people rant on the story and they don’t read the entire series. She is 18 years old, she is a teenager. Also when she meet the king she was glad she had not eaten because the king had killed all of her family, her kingdom, her friends, and burned and enslaved them.

Also, she doesn't kill anyone because she doesn't want to go back to prison.

I LOVE the series, but you're HILARIOUS and I've never noticed some of the things you've mentioned and they've never bothered me; but I'm pretty sure I will notice them from now on when I re-read. HAHAHA!!!!

i totally agree that Celaena's personality was incongruous with her circumstances, but I also kind of liked that it denied all the stereotypes - like, she's girly and shallow but also a badass. And she does go through some pretty great character development over the course of the next books (even if it does seem super forced), although it WOULD be nice if she had any redeeming qualities when she's first introduced.

So what if so was arrogant and full of herself, I have read many many of male characters being arrogant,jerk and self absorbed loved n fangirled upon, I like her character tough, she is nosy and immature sometimes, n most of the time I was waiting for her to actually kill someone, but still okay I love her!!
