@buddhasadvocate7238You don’t want to sleep with a James Tullos plushie?
Man, you got it easy, I was in line at the DMV when I was subjected to my first sjm sex scene in audio book form. I don’t think I ever recovered from that embarrassment
I was physically reading empire of storms in a coffee shop and had to put it down and finish laughing before I could continue
I had on ACOMAF in audiobook form right next to me with my mom in the room, and I think I moved at the speed of light to turn it off.
throne of glass is a guilty pleasure of mine that i will vehemently defend in its base form while also wholeheartedly agreeing with all the criticism and rewrites it receives
Basically, it's _glorious trash_ .
Same lol. It got me into YA
This is almost how I feel with Maze Runner, except I love picking it apart and critiquing it. It’s at least half the fun for me
14 years old me was convinced that it was peak fiction
100%
Never let anyone tell you not to enjoy or love something you love.
I recommended my middle aged teacher this book series as a high school freshman. She loved it. Looking back it’s pretty disappointing
Looking back are you embarrassed that you liked it, or your teacher liked it, but maybe your teacher was just being nice and just lied lol.
@@xygeusmorrowind2336 both. She would talk to me about it sometimes and would pass around theories
As a freshman, my teacher (she’s in my generation) recommended me to read this, not knowing I’ve already read HOEAB and despised the author. I was less worried that my Literacy teacher (she’s actually really good, just younger) recommended me read SJM and more worried that she was going to get fired for telling me to read a book with sex in it. 😢
I had to make this video private and then immediately make it public again, apologies if this caused any confusion or removed any comments.
"alledgedly" what did you mean by that 😊😊

I keep hearing the name of the kingdom as Otterland
A fantasy series about Otter-People would be pretty incredible.
I remember how dissapointed I was when my aunt got me this book on christmass and I though it was going to be cool story about badass assassin but it ended up being terrible romance I didnt gave 2 shits about 😭. Thank you for this, I will re write my memmories of the book with this video now.
Same here.
I was so excited to read this book when I read the summary, only to be disappointed when I opened the book. Its probably why I hate the series so much.
I wanted him to specifically mention NO WALKING DEAD.
1:05 What you’re forgetting is marketability.
A lot of the time, people simply want McDonald’s, nothing fancy, nothing they’ll remember.
A trashburger of a book
That's also the thing with porn. However distasteful or abusive they might be, sex scenes have a tendency to sell. _Especially_ if they are something most books for the target autience don't include to that extent.
Something I would really want to change is the way Dorian is treaten. He is supposed to be equal or even more powerful than Aelin, but this was all forgotten just to make her more powerful. Same happened to Rowan & Manon.
Plus, I think there should be more death in the end.
I'm absolutely going to try to find any excuse to do that magical bastard/non-magical true-blood thing now
See the thing about her being the long lost princess was super obvious to be from the first book. I have always been so confused when people consider it a spoiler. Though to be fair I never made it to the end of the series, these books really took a hard turn to weird and horny.
I think the part where she basically changes her kingdom into a constitutional monarchy could start earlier; She can admit she has no experience in state craft or runnning a government and also knows how bad life was and is under monarchy and also wants better for the people, so she basically gets a lot of advisors from all the different spheres shes interacted with and slowly morphs it into a proto-council thing and eventually when the country is more stable and the population is more educated and free and used to expressing themselves she moves to get democracy implemented. Also, since she knows monarchy and noble bloodlines suck and good heirs and the like aren't guaranteed, she spends the rest of her life as Queen using her limited powers to end the nobility nationally and have it in writing the monarchy ends with her.
She's full fae now, so the monarchy would end in a thousand years.
Heck, the way you described the improved version, I actually think I'd like to read it.
Petition for James Tullos to get the rights to rewrite Throne of Glass as a revised edition!
i was 12 when i read it for the first time, reading together with my friend at school, we read in the same book at school, i was enjoying our time untill the first sex scene, we close the book and never talked about it again, but man why this books where at my middle school library?
This is making me want to write some throne of glass inspired but like, better/good. To your point about the assassin thing, i want!!! Assassin stories where theyre weak slimy manipulative motherfuckers lnfao. Theres no reason for an assasin to be good in a fight tbh. They should be good with plants bc they poison ppl, and they should be good at acting and getting ppl to give them information, and they should probably be very organized and politically savvy
that's more of a spy than assassin, no?
@@phangkuanhoong7967 how exactly are you planning on killing someone and getting away with it if ur wandering around telling everyone ur name and showcasing ur fighting skills. Its an assassin. Assassins and spies are basically the same thing except one has the goal of killing people and the other has the goal of selling information.
Also like this cultural thing of assassins being like super cool and strong is a new phenomenon. Throughout history assassins have been considered slimy bastards who can't win in a fair fight and therefore resort to trickery. Often assassins were women because it was easier for a woman to sneak into places, go unnoticed, and not be considered a threat or even a suspect.
Assassins need combat skills to get out of bad situations when things go wrong.
@@Thenoobestgirl not if they're a good assassin lol
Throne of Glass is one of the books ever written
The half sister plot line is interesting but a little needlessly complex with the two sisters swapping identities
I would just have it so this society accepts bastards on the throne as a last resort if no highborn heirs remain
I read this entire series when i was 8-9. Really loved it at that time. When i was 11 i tried rereading the first book for an asignment in school where they let us choose a book, and holy shit did my false image fall apart quickly.
6 years later: i am now 17, immigrated to a whole new country, and the other day i saw a man that looked to be in his 20s reading this book. Insane to me
At a prestigious high school event, I saw the 2nd place winner’s coach reading A Court of Mist and Fury during the literal competition. Seriously, the audiences reading these books just shock me.
I have the first book, started reading it but haven't finished.
From what I've noticed it's strangely similar to the first Mistborn book, except Mistborn does right everything which failed in the Throne of Glass.
I'm probably making a connection which wasn't ever there, but both have: one of the main characters who was once trapped in grimdark mines, evil gothic castle capitols, evil not-orcs, a main protagonist with semi-op powers, shapeshiefting not-people, and in both the evil king dies early.
actually thats a really spot on observation lol
Wait the castle is made of glass?
Yes, and yet somehow some of it is stone, and also the glass doesn't burn down the surrounding area every time the sun rises
@@elaz925 you gotta have stones to throw from your glass castle
Seeing as SJM loves to butcher folklore, the inspiration is probably in nordic and eastern european versions of cinderella (cinder-kid being a guy, first of all, so nothing like the western european) where a princess is trapped on top of a glass mountain.
@@Gwestytearslol
What if the Mary Sue did a face heel turn when she realised she was part demon instead? I haven't read the series but it's almost a cliche now that there's something like that going on and the MC or whoever just remains unphased and doesn't do a whole lot of self reflection. Then again I have no idea how demons were interpreted in this series and how most people view them, maybe it wasn't so bad, rather than MC having a breakdown, ditching her quest and settling down for a lifetime of blackjack and hookers so the author can end the series by writing the porno she's apparently trying to write.
26:27 Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that plot point was inspired by JRPGs. Sailor Moon was a huge inspiration for this series, so I wouldn't be surprised if the anime influence extended beyond that.
I read ACOTAR, and it kinda has a lot of the same problems as TOG... Stretched too long, bunch of subplots that lead to nowhere, and way too focused on the smut. Especially ACOSF, that one's pure porn.
For some reason I didn’t mind Acosf’s repetitive nature, but Rhysand pissed me off so much in that book that it kinda ruined it for me.
@@jacklemm1518 I kinda hated everyone in the inner circle after ACOSF
I read this book as a teen hoping it'd be a cool assassin story. I was sorely disappointed lmao
a friend recommended this to me when I was like 17 and half way through I was forcing myself to keep reading it then I dropped it. I remember it being so bad, I don't even remember why just the feeling of hating it.
Personally, this series is in a weird spot because when I read it, kinda 15 years old I think, I really liked it. Some plots irritated me like the demon king but generally liked it, specially Manon and Maeve. Still I completely agree with every single point you made and this rewrite would be so much better. I guess if I had to read it today at 25 would not enjoy it as much, or at all.
btw I really love your rewrite videos
the Aelin / Celeana thing is INSANE and I love it
James: let's rewrite throne of glass
Me: Let's do this!
i 've had this impression from the start,i didnt read Throne of Glass but from your description of it in your videos,it sounds the problem was more the execution of the xontent rather than the content itself.
Good Video nonetheless
You know his saying
"It's always about the execution"
Heyyy my rewrite has the main character as a bastard of the royal family too!
not yet having watched this, i put thought of my own into how to fix the character and keep her 19
she's not a World Famous Assassin, but was raised/trained by one and has been working a few years when caught. recognising her talent and the style of her trainer, the king goes in to put her forward as a champion because she's skilled, expendable if she dies, but if she wins young enough to use the fact he saved her from prison as a starting point for developing loyalty
bear in mind i didn't even finish ToG, so I have no idea how the rest of the story goes 😆
Loving this. I have already watched the series where you read throne of glass and tore it to pieces, and this is a great follow up. After having read those books at age 11 (yes. eleven.) I hate them as much as physically possible cause man that messed me up. This is great comedy to me now. Thanks a lot

Hey James nice to see you talking about TOG again
Honestly, the prequel books are kinda needed for this series which does make it even longer. But they are some of the best of the series though.
“Mwaaah my family died”
“What a fucking baby, am I right?”
JAJAJAJJAJJA
I am kindly requesting Iron Widow or Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor.
I went to rewatch your first throne of glass video like 5 minutes ago because my friend has been reading it recently. What a pleasant suprise.
I loved this book when I read this years ago, but hell, this version sounds amazing!
Comparing what eventually became the Throne of Glass pileup to "Kingdom Hearts" got me to applaud. Stating the plot change to the fifth book is basically turning the whole thing into "Dragon Age Origins," 'but f**k you I like that game' earned this video a *F**k Yeah!* What truly puts this up there as commendable is, as always, your dedication. Taking a quick moment to point out how difficult it was thinking up reasonable changes to something that causes you such pain? I could totally feel you there. At the same time, it only earns you genuine respect and admiration putting in the effort to show how that very pain could have been lessened, if not completely avoided. For that, this rewrite earns top marks and praise from me. Lifting a chalice of Bordeaux to you, sir. To your health.
Throne of glass has got flaws and some very average world building with the classic elemental magic system but I feel like that's what kinda makes it so addictive 😅😅
I wanted to start rewriting it the first fifty pages I was into it. I still haven’t decided if I should give it a legit rewrite like you do here.
I actually did a rewrite of the first two chapters. Never posted it anywhere, but it was an interesting exercise.
I'm annoyed, because now I wanna read a book series that doesn't exist
I read the prologue before tapping out, don't normally listen to things like this for series I don't know, this will be an interesting listen
32:11 That was a lot more relatable than I would like.
Have you read Fourth Wing yet? I’m VERY curious as to what your thoughts are on the book!
Stopped video @18:41. OMG! You almost described the book I've been writing about a bastard princess. For that reason, I cannot finish the video (don't want to steal or spoil any ideas) but I enjoyed this video nonetheless. Keep up the good work and hopefully someday my book would be featured as one of the worst books you ever read (lol)
Edit : hint for anyone that's interested : tags, girl power, sailor moon + thunder cats (two of my favourite shows as a child).
Also, having the king be possessed by a demon feeds into his character ark at the end of the series as his name was taken from him by the demon King.
17:37 So, Selina is at least 5 before all magic stops working, so all the people who never knew they were magic, are at least 5 years younger than Selina.
I want that shirt
Funny you say everyone is trying to be throne of glass bc it’s so true. It’s one of the reasons I stopped reading YA fantasy. Hell, even Maas rewrites Celaena/Aelin over and over. All of her books post ToG have just been rewrites of the same book.
i dont know, make the rebel and the prince have teir own tension and after they are over with elena they come closer? No smut but clear.
hey james, not to be a weirdo but you have really nice veins! i'm training to work in the medical field and the ones on your right arm look like they'd be really easy to take blood from lol (not a threat). do you drink a lot of water?
That’s gotta be the weirdest compliment I’ve ever come across.
nu huh, the big ones you can see in this video are not good for drawing blood they are so painful
@@marianatheschizoid5912 sorry for any psychic damage caused XD I've been told it before and I thought it was quite nice so just wanted to spread the love around yk
Right. Medical field. Lemme get my garlic
@@kousetsuhanawe've been taught not to use the dorsal veins unless no veins of the anterior (same side as the palms) arm are good but i didn't know that was the reason - thank you for the info! and sorry for the confusion, i wasn't talking about the visible dorsal veins in particular, i just assumed that if the ones on the back of his arm looked healthy, the anterior ones like the median cubital vein would be too! thank you for your wisdom, would you be able to help me learn how to take an arterial sample too please 😅
"mini version of James" are. You and James separate in some way now? Is James Tullos a character you play on this channel and that's not actually your name?? Like you switch your entire personality on camera. Yes. Im convinced of that now.
In reality he is the lost bastard prince of a magical kingdom and his real name is Jaemeles Tullothian.
*warns about spoilers

*after giving away her second name😂
What is your opinion on "The Eminence of Shadow"?
My high school ex liked this series so this is cathartic lmao
mine too man we should start a support group
Oh boy this should be fun
ok but the subplots and the side characters were literally the best part- like the witches were my favorite characters- and the medics- like those were the best characters imo- also- you have some inconsistencies with your like- how stuff goes- i agree- it’s not that good- but like- also- you are adding parts that weren’t there to begin with- also- the smut really wasn’t that bad😭
I remember the first (or maybe second?) Book has already made me quite uncomfortable with the portrait of the romance with the guard captain.
I am so fucking glad I dropped the series before I got to "hardcore porn" section
0:19 “Corn”?
youtube censors certain words so to keep monetisation creators are forced to slightly alter « bad » words
1:08 it’s because throne of glass was a success and they are trying to get on the bandwagon.
😎
Me feels so 😍 from India here.
Blood for the blood god.
A shock to no one: this series only got published bc it was a popular fanfic
This series has a special place in my heart for being the one which got me back into reading, so I'm very scared to watch this but I'm also looking forward to hearing what you have to say. 😅
Edit: OK, first of all, Maeve is Celaena's aunt, not great grandmother, and wtf do you mean her names are hard to keep up with? She's only got 2 (real) ones! 😂 Plus the point of her changing her Aelin name in book 3 is to show she finally accepts her true identity and role as monarch, and Celaena is the persona she had to make up in order to protect herself growing up.
And wtf are you talking about at 30:50? She didn't dance, she fake cried and had her dancing instructor pull her aside to "watch and learn" instead as the other dancers performed, so she can pull off saving Aedion. Did we read the same book? 😂
And when tf did she bring in democracy?! Bruh I really don't think you dug enough into the books to be able to make this video since you got so many details wrong... (and you even admitted to not reading #6...)
And you barely even mentioned the side characters, which is understandable because you didn't like the side plot lines, but you should've at least mentioned the names of the characters and what you were going to change about them. You basically cut off 90% of the series and called it a day and I'm sorry but it did *not* make it better...
ngl this haircut suits you
trying hard to algo booth
Normally I like this guy's content but some of his ideas on how to fix this book or just stupid
oh all the comments are gone lmao
your version of Celaena actually sounds really badass

Harry potter is the worst book i ever read in my life
Would you like to explain? I’m by no means a Harry Potter fan but personally it’s not the worst thing in the world. I’m just curious about your point of view
It's sucks because Harry Potter has the chosen one trope these is no story outside of Hogwarts most characters are one dimensional
@@gokuvegeta1167 yeah that is a major issue with the story, I am also not a fan of the chosen one trope. Thanks for explaining! I know a 1 hour 45 minute video explaining more problems with Harry Potter if you want me to give you the link
Haven't read a lot of books then? Trust me they get much worse (and better...granted)
Harry Potter is the biggest marry sue ever and its sucks
