7:40 Wow he says that he splits his royalties equally , even if two people do most of the songwriting, so that all feel they are part of it equally, because of the future goodwill it ensures.
Instead of everybody being in a band, the younger generations are following the trends and sitting at their computers programming sounds instead. No bad feelings towards them, some of them are very talented programmers, but that is why we don't have garage bands like we used to, because there is less interest in it.
and often these people do their music creation alone, such as the electric heavy synthwave 80s retro music. They do it alone , and it's mediocre as a result. Without the creative inputs from band members, without touring and playing in front of people and critics, without having to hustle for contracts but instead just upload to youtube, it doesn't have the quality of old style music making.
decimated550 Well, I recently read that dance music is dull and boring so as to cater for the dull and boring people who listen to it, or maybe it was the other way around. There's some genuinely good electronic music out there, but it's usually completely irrelevant to what is actually going on in that area. Electronic music has been around since the early 1900s, it's only recently when its become easier to produce that it went on a crooked path. The pioneers were more like classical composers, the limiting factor was the primitive technology they had to work with. A few of them wish they could start over from this era, and actually accomplish what they want to. But the average "DJ Fuck-fuck-fuckfuck--fuck-head" really gets tiring very quickly.
I often wonder what would musicians like Bernard Sumner ( joy division/new order), been doing if synths/keyboards were never invented. I really like bands that can make music and be creative. I know punk bands only played 1 or 2 chords. Simple guitar & fast drumming. I believe that most musicians say that they all couldn't play an instrument when starting up a band. However, It was a learning experience for all bands to practice their own principles to become professional musicians. Some new wave bands : The Chameleons were underrated. Bands who tried to use Drum machines & tapes for feedback and Effects was a real problem if it all went wrong on stage. I really the music from killing joke, because of the way of being able to play dance music with energy that isn't aimed at night clubbing/disco. I dislike all bands that just rely on a press,of a button and play along to songs in 3 minutes. Today's music is awful, because there nothing new about in styles/sounds. Nothing with the same melodies/rhythms that the likes of Killing joke.
Money got in the whole thing and McDonald'slies it I call music today McDonald's music.. it's got no fucken flavour.. no soul no heart no nothing... you listen to a band and you can't even hear the music or instruments it it's just noise.... fast food music... where's the wholesome cook stuff gone
Fucking good stuff Jaz. You're a gent and you always were.
I love you Jaz
Superb interview. Wish Jaz would change his mind about playing here in NZ. But so very cool to hear him talk so fondly of this beautiful country.
