    You were right first time, it IS pronounced "doomsday". To paraphrase Terry Pratchett, it was written before they invented spelling! 😁

      Yep - looks Domesday but pronounced Doomsday :D

    • @pompmag
      @pompmag 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      It also actually means Dooms-day. It was first census of England and the English people thought that the King/central government knowing that much about them would be the same as the biblical end of days: the day of doom or 'Doomsday'.
      It also recorded the wealth of every community and noble to prevent tax-dodging which may also have been a factor in how the people named it!

    Public footpaths across private land and open countryside are probably the most underrated, but greatest part, of the British countryside

      I agree with Ann. Massive lack of public land for parks. That's why you have to trapse through private land.

      I kind of assumed most countries have right-of-way rules?

    • @TheEulerID
      @TheEulerID 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No. In the USA there isn't the same historic right of way system once you leave the highways. There are lots of parks, but you won't find public rights of way across private farmland. However, what the USA does have is a huge amount of public land and national and state parks.
      The system of public footpaths in England and Wales (Scotland is different) are just routes which were customarily used by local people to get from place to place and then the morphed into historical rights of way in law. Many, of course, became public highways but other remain footpaths bridlepaths or other rights of way. The system of land ownership in the USA came about much faster and didn't have those centuries, or even millennia of historical usage.

    It's always interesting to see your own country from someone else's perspective. I never really thought, for instance, about how lucky we are to have public footpaths! I use them all the time but definitely take them for granted. Thanks for making me look at my every day life with fresh eyes and a bit more appreciation! Hope you enjoyed your time over here.

      Anne i'm from Australia , now in the Cotswolds and the right of way rights are non existent back home. There was a famous High Court case in the '90's that was Aboriginals asking for right of way rights along ancient paths that are now privately owned farms. Even that concept got rejected by Australian law. You english don't realise just how lucky you are.

    The Slaughters are one of the few places in the UK not to have a War Memorial. They are what's know as a "Doubly Thankful Village" everyone who served in both the First and Second World War came home. We're lucky to live not far from here and the kids love paddling in the River Eye, all that water eventually gets to the Thames and runs through London...

Are you guys gonna hit Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in northern Wales? It’s touristy, but was one of those tourist places that I felt was worth going to. (Get a passport stamp at the place with the longest name in Britain! 😉) And there’s tons to see there and around there that is historic, beautiful, unique and amazing! I know you’re gonna enjoy it whatever you do and I can’t wait to see the videos. Hope you get a chance to check Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch out!

    Not bad.... The UK set up "Right to Roam" in 2000. Under the "Countryside rights of way act". It's a brilliant piece of legislation that only provides a right of access on foot. In the words of the Act itself,
    “any person is entitled…to enter and remain on access land for the purposes of open air recreation”.
    I did a project about the Countryside Rights Of Way Act as part of a Landscape Photography course I was studying at the time.
    I think the Stella was a mistake as it is from belgium and full of chemicals.... Always give me a terrible hangover, so I avoid it. Hobgoblin is a great real ale....

    I know I will get corrected for this, but the general difference between walk and hike is “a walk” is, normally a shortish distance travelled by foot and you finish back at the place you started.
    A hike is travelling by foot from point A to a point B, normally the distance is minimum 3-4 miles.
    There are groups that meet at country pubs and do long walks of 5 to 10miles, they are called Ramblers. A group would meet at the pub near my home, there was normally 30 to 50 people in the group. They’d go for a 12 to 15mile ramble along the public footpaths, and bridleways that criss cross the British Isles. At the end they’d then have lunch and a pint or two back they got back to the pub.

    If you are around long enough you should visit the historic City of Lincoln. It's only a small City by comparison smaller than Bristol but steeped in history. and in my opinion has the most stunning and historic cathedral of anywhere ,dating back nearly a thousand years ( Lincoln Cathedral or the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, and sometimes St. Mary's Cathedral in Lincoln, England is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Lincoln. Building commenced in 1072 and continued in several phases throughout the medieval period. It was the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311-1549), and the first building to hold that title after the Great Pyramid of Giza.[1][2][3] The central spire collapsed in 1549 and was not rebuilt. The cathedral is the third largest in Britain (in floor area) after St Paul's and York Minster, being 484 by 271 feet (148 by 83 m). It is highly regarded by architectural scholars; the eminent Victorian writer John Ruskin declared: "I have always held... that the cathedral of Lincoln is out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have".) also the castle which dates back to the 11th century.( Lincoln Castle is a major Norman castle constructed in Lincoln, England during the late 11th century by William the Conqueror on the site of a pre-existing Roman fortress. The castle is unusual in that it has two mottes.[1] It is only one of two such castles in the country, the other being at Lewes in Sussex. Lincoln Castle remained in use as a prison and law court into modern times, and is one of the better preserved castles in England; the Crown Courts continue to this day. It is open to the public most days of the week, and possible to walk around the walls from which there are views of the castle complex, cathedral, the city, and surrounding countryside). Other then that there is lots of bars restaurants shops and places of interest to make any visit worthwhile ...

      Well, to be super-picky, the document was written in Latin, and if its Middle English nickname (first attested nearly 100 years later) was "pronounced as spelled" it would also have had three syllables (the first of which would not have had the diphthong heard in modern "dome" -- that was a later change!).

    • @diamondlil7819
      @diamondlil7819 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ynysmydwr Yes, it was written in Latin and some think that 'Domes' is from the Latin for house/houses because it was a list of people's property. 'Doom' was just a popular interpretation of its meaning by people who didn't know Latin.

    • @Ynysmydwr
      @Ynysmydwr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@diamondlil7819 The work didn't have a Latin title, however (although it tended to be referred in later documenrts in that language as Liber de Wintonia, i.e. The Book of Winchester). Its (unofficial) English name means "The Book of the Day of Judgement" -- "dome" was the Middle English word for "judgement, legal decision". The Treasurer of England explained it thus in around 1179:
      The book is metaphorically called by the native English, Domesday, i.e., the Day of Judgement. For as the sentence of that strict and terrible last account cannot be evaded by any skilful subterfuge, so when this book is appealed to on those matters which it contains, its sentence cannot be quashed or set aside with impunity. That is why we have called the book "the Book of Judgement", ... not because it contains decisions on various difficult points, but because its decisions, like those of the Last Judgement, are unalterable.

    Your vlogs are amazing. It's great to see two really enthusiastic, energetic and open-minded people experiencing, and appreciating, foreign countries, their histories , cultures and cuisine. Based on how much you both eat, your energy expenditure and natural metabolisms must burn off lots, and lots, and lots of calories otherwise you would end up as absolute "porkers" ..... which you obviously aren't :-D
    Keep on doing what you're doing and enjoy life :)

    It was known colloquially by the Anglo Saxons as the Domesday Book (Doomsday in modern English) because we had just been invaded by the Norman French and everything in the country had changed overnight. William the Conqueror ordered this national census to ascertain how much land and property he now controlled. I believe it was the first census of its kind ever. The whole thing was actually written in Latin and still exists in The National Archives - only a copy is on display because it is so fragile, but the original does get displayed for special occasions. From this book, we can find out specific details about individuals 1,000 years ago, such as how much land a particular farmer owned or how many pigs and chickens they had etc.

    In England the word ‘bunch’ is just used with flowers or grapes. You use it all the time for ‘a lot’ - what about thinking of alternatives while in UK? Otherwise good video - glad you enjoyed the Cotswolds. Sadly not typical of how or where most Brits live. Good luck..

    Be mindful traveling trough UK. The country side is beautiful as you said but the cities are very bad. Stabbing these days is worse than New York . I can't believe you got away filming eating while eating. Usually the Brits are going nuts and get very suspicious when they see a camera. Good on ya for having guts.

    I really enjoyed this, thank you. I hope you go to Conwy in North Wales. The view of the castle as you drive across the bridge is spectacular and unforgettable. Also, only a few miles from there is The Great Orme in Llandudno. There are Bronze Age Copper Mines (4,000 years old!) there that you can visit. Google Conwy Castle and Great Orme Mines. Also in Conwy is Plas Mawr a Tudor House well worth going to as it looks just as it did when the family were living there. For a couple who love history so much, you'll be blown away.

    Mate! If you wanted to say "secretary" in an English accent you wouldn't have pronounced the "a"!
    Secret'ry, milit'ry, necess'ry, compliment'ry are all correct English pronunciations - it's only accents from the Americas that include that extra syllable!

    You guys should've visited the ancient Ram Inn in Wotton-Under-Edge. It's in the Cotswolds, about 30 minutes out of Bristol. The Ram Inn is one of the oldest houses in the UK, it was built in 1145 and said to be the most haunted place in the whole of the UK.

    Have a wander round Winchcombe if you get the chance. All the old houses have a ring to tie your horse, and a scraper by the front door to get the mud off your boots. There is a big church there, (St Peter's c1468), well known for the grotesques on the roof. Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway stops there also, with wonderful old Great Western Locomotives.

    Secretary birds are kind of cool. Long legs, strutting around, fussing about stuff with a frill that looks a bit like a pencil behind each ear ... and eating snakes. Those long legs are armoured and allow the bird to take on a snake without having to get any unarmoured body parts within striking distance.
    I was sure I'd tried Hobgoblin, but it's not in the review thread or the list. That's odd.
    List is here: sableagle.livejournal.com/257824.html if you're bothered.

    Your initial pronunciation is correct, the census of 1066 by William the 1st is the Doomsday Book. All British students learn about this book from an early age. At that stage William wanted to know what he had won and then divided up the country and handed over all the villages to his victorious military officers and they thus became the lords of the manor in each place. Their descendants still sit in the House of Lords in Westminster to this day. They introduced lots of French into the Anglo Saxon of the peasantry and thus created the modern English spoken today.

    The Cotswolds are beautiful as long as all is right with the world. If you've got any problems the sickly sweetness of the area becomes apparent and it appears very contrived. Give me the valleys of Esckdale and Wasdale in Cumbria any day of the week. These places are spots one can actually breath and think.
